Not surprised it passed authentication, as "authentication" is one of the loopholes with the program. I re-tweeted a response from dcsports87 this morning that mentions they received this item on consignment and ended up sending it back, due to concerns with the card.
Someone in the Pokemon hobby bought a BGS 9.5 gold star for $1500. They sent it in to get re-slabbed (not re-graded) since the case had a bunch of scratching on it. BGS emailed them and said the card shouldn't have been graded a 9.5 originally and if they still wanted it re-slabbed they would have to reduce the grade down to a 9. I would never buy anything expensive from BGS.
Grading is a double edged sword. It protects a card and makes it easier to sell but it is also the sole driver and impetus for all fraud in this hobby because of the instant "value" it adds.
I have actually successfully questioned the card in integrated slab with eBay in order to get refunded in full. PSA mislabeled a card that I paid top dollar for because the label was wrong and the card was not what the label said. eBay authenticity made it right and refunded my money. I would suggest that the buyer contacts eBay authenticity to discuss the matter and they should be able to resolve this for them.
Once again just reinforces the take that grading has in large part ruined the hobby. Fakes though have been going on for decades, long before the internet scams. This hobby is full of landmines. I'm glad I dont have the budget for the high end stuff. Thanks for sharing Dan.

The moment grading companies charged different price catagories for cards aka card values over 10k cost more to grade than a 200 dollar. That is the moment unless grading companies take ownership means their grading company is fraud.
With eBay Authentication simply passing this card on the fact of BGS Label details matching the Auction Listing is a green light for scammers to insert fake cards into slabs and get away with it.... eBay needs to fix this ASAP..... They check raw cards and NEED to be checking graded cards as well .... Simples.....
I agree, I’ve always been indifferent on them relying on the grader. Some days I’m supportive because graders need to be relied upon but these days the errors speak for themselves. eBay should go one step further and inspect the cards for authenticity only (I.e. make sure it matches label and is what it is without regrading)
In theory what you’re saying may be simple but it’s far from it. eBay authentication is free, so if a graded card needs to be regraded (for lack of a better term), who’s paying for that? The seller has already paid for grading, or paid a premium to own the card graded. And, pays the eBay fees. You think the buyer is going to pay?? Btw, the green light, unfortunately, has been there since cards exploded during the pandemic. Unfortunately, scammers have been doing this on multiple platforms. eBay authentication is fairly new. To associate eBay authenticity to this particular scamming is far-fetched to say the least.

But, that’s not really true considering sellers pay eBay fees whether cards go through eBay authentication or not. I do agree that it would be nice for an extra layer of protection, but that would probably come at a cost.
you would think it would be that easy. You will have to write an essay with 10 pieces of documentation and if you used pay pal, you would have to go through them
Loop holed the grading terms...Technically it is a authentic card and it is altered. (There have been some versions of the base cards that when you turn them over the back has the Pmg designation that didn't get blacked out(hence no serial # but Pmg designation)...in this case the person then put red ink all over the front of what was a base style front. Just don't know why anyone would buy it, it looks pretty bad.
One bright spot, PSA has in the past covered issues like this. The Jordan 86 Fleer RC I wanna guess and say a local news channel covered it in maybe Wisconsin a year ago and it was high teens or 20k range. I could be off on numbers, but he ended up getting his money. All we want is accountable companies who take people's hard earned money. Beckett is just inching themselves out the door.
@TheCardDeal It was originally graded a bgs 9/9. The underline from the J went off the card. Someone cracked it and eraser the part that went off the card. It was submitted to psa and got a 10. PSA bought it back for 20k when the hobby community showed it was altered.
This is sad!!! I watched the buyers video and he made an honest mistake and got screwed on a shit ton of money. The ebay authentication is a big joke in my opinion. It was originally listed with DCsports, they cancelled it because they didn’t feel comfortable with the card. The seller then listed it under their own account where it sold.

The card looked terrible, it had no serial numbered stamping, lacked the pmg markings on the front and back. Why would one bid on this piece of junk? Simply bidding because it is an oddity and a buyer puts his faith in Beckett is plain naive. Probably thought they were getting some crazy good deal. Ebay should reverse that shitty sale.
Hey everybody let jump on the bandwagon of graded cards since everyone is doing it. I promise you if I cracked a 9 and 10 slab and have you guess which one is a 10 you wouldnt know. Also if you cracked a 10 and resubmit it, promise you it will not be a 10 again. Some people like other to tell them what to do. I don't trust any of those graders or Ebay Authentication. I dont think they have enough what you called "Expert" to authenticate each card. I don't like to pay for gimmick. I collect cards not grade.

Can’t a buyer on eBay just trigger a refund “just don’t like the item” or something of the sort and the buyer can send back for a refund? eBay seems very lenient to buyers and caters to them to sustain their business.

Here in Australia you are eligible for a refund no matter what, even if the seller says no refunds in their description. I don't think it works like that in the US
Not if it goes through authentication (same with shoes, watches, etc). The only way to get your money back is if the item fails authentication, the refund is automatic from ebay.

I mean, I just got scammed also. I bought a 1997 Penny PMG at $12k at Ebay buy it now (which is a bargain consider it is a 20K+ card because it is the highest grading from BGS). Turns out, the card is still bidding in Japan and the seller just feel $12k is good enough. (And there is very little possibility it will go under $12k) The worst thing about this, I have to ask people around to see if the card is real and I have keep my hope high in getting the card. Turns out, the best I can do is a sorry from the seller and a refund. Man, I mean this is very common but the disappointment is real.

ive said this so many times grading is a scam its a SUBJECTIVE THIRD PARTY OPINION thats all it is and ever will be until there is a mechanism in place for a accreditation program or a vetted program ie a degree from a accredited institution grading is a money grab only as it stands right now
Tbh, most of the issue sits with the misalignment in expectation between what customers think they’re getting vs what the companies are actually offering. It’s not a scam but it’s certainly something bad actors lean into

This is in no way in defense of Beckett, ebay etc... but come on the buyer should be doing better due diligence when looking to spend 10s of thousands of dollars on anything. If you go to buy a car even when it's a brand new one from the dealer you test the car, you'll do your research etc.. should be no different here this buyer to a degree needs to be put on blast just like the seller/ebay/Beckett does

This isn't new. It's been happening since the first card PSA graded. We are already in the long term. It's not like grading is new.

The serial number on the card, indicates it was graded 12 years ago. Unlikely the original owner.
It was graded in March this year. A few months ago not 12 years ago.
I covered in an earlier video that he confirmed to the buyer and eBay that he was the submitter to BGS in March this year
