Many common Southerners did not fight for slavery. They either joined the war to protect their homeland from the invading north or refused to fight altogether. The majority of Southerners could not afford to own slaves, and thus they had no interest in fighting to keep them. However, the Confederate government, the 1% who could afford slavery, was funding the war to keep their slaves. Politically, the Civil War was fought over slavery. However, that is not why most Southerners joined the army. Does that excuse the wrong they did? No, but for a flawed group of people, they were more honorable than they are given credit for. That is why common Southerners still hold onto our heritage as there were many great, and even moral, practices we had, such as the classic Southern gentleman for instance. And the negative practices, such as racism, we have left behind for the most part.
Terrible take. Being proud of a slave state that lasted less time than geometry dash does not make you one who respects history. It just makes you a loser. Replace every instance of southerner with Nazi in you comment and tell me if it still makes sense. Sure they did the holocaust but we fly that swastika because of the good parts of our Nazi heritage.

You're wrong. In Mississippi for example, household slave ownership was at 49%. The overwhelming majority of slaves weren't on megaplantations of a few people, most slaves were held by smaller farms and were few in number. And even if they didn't directly own slaves, they had an economy that relied on them. People who oversaw slaves on plantations did not directly own them, but they relied on them for work. People who bought nails made by slaves were reliant on slaves. People who bought cotton were reliant on slaves. The economy of the south was inseparable from slavery, you did not have a job without it in some way being connected to slavery. Also, analysis by Cambridge University found that households without slaves provided Confederate Army soldiers at a lower rate than households with slaves.

They joined the war to protect their homes from the slave uprising that they feared might happen like in Haiti.
