Ha, thanks man. I would say it's a bit of both, but I did spend a bit of time EQing the toms. I like to turn up the Hi (nearly all the way) and take out nearly all the Mid, which gives a nice focused attack. Of course, my Pearl MMX drums also do a lot of the hard work :)
It's awesome to see a drummer on here that can cover a song, keep it sounding good, and can keep from going WAY over the top. A lot of people take it too far and it ends up sounding like crap, but, dude, this cover sounds great!

Well, I have built the kit over nearly 15 years... so it's really the product of lots of hard work over many years (and a love of drums) which has resulted in my set-up.
Oh and one more thing Drummerboy, get you some Aquarian Force Ten coated heads for your toms and floors, get a Triple Threat coated for your snare, and a Superkick 10 coated for your kick and you will never use any other heads after that. You will love the depth of the sound and they last forever without denting.

My Drums are Pearl Masters MMX Series (I've had them about 15 years, so not sure they even make these anymore). My snare is a Pearl Steve Ferrone signature snare. I believe his point is that the drumming in songs like this (and many with it) really doesn't do much more than a metronome, when there's a chance to really lift and really compliment a song with the beats.

Hi. I'm using CAD mics. They are not expensive mics but do a really good job. They came in a set of 5 mics. I have three on the toms, one on the snare and one bass mic. I don't have any overheads as the tom and snare mics pick up the cymbals quite well.

Love this. Something that most covers miss is staying true to the original - everything was nice, loved all of the fills - funky, clean, smooth and went so well with the song. It wasn't flashy, and God damn it didn't have to be, thank you! You're really playing WITH the music, not over it like most other drum covers on youtube - ESPECIALLY of MJ songs. The drumlines are simple because they work - not because his drummers couldn't play! It drives me nuts when people don't get that. All I'd say is you could make a little more of the hi-hat openings all the way through - could do with a bit more of a sizzle in my opinion to give it that little bit extra - BUT that's just my way, your way was still awesome ^_^ (I'm sure a lot has changed in 6 years though!)
The one thing that would complete the kit is something i saw a few weeks ago when watching foo fighters live, Taylor Hawkins now has Golden Cymbal stands. This is all your kit needs :D But the video and drumming and your kit is BEAUTIFUL, well done sir :)
Thanks. I suspect if I had better quality mics like Sure then they wouldn't bleed as much and pick up the cymbals, but it seems to work out ok with my set-up. The mics go into my mixer with a 3 band EQ, so I have taken out nearly all the Mids and turned up the Highs a bit to give some attack. I then take the output into my laptop to record. At that stage I have added some compression (3:1, I think) and a little reverb to give a fatter sound.
@baterode10 Hey,I mixed the toms using my Behringer mixer with 3-Band EQ. I turn High up nearly all the way and take out all the Mid. Gives a nice attack.
