The 8-bit Famicom entry is also worth seeing. The level where you go into a church and find a ritual where a goat demon is the boss is unexpected for such a chibi-style game.
Worth noting: All three games (no Wanpaku Graffiti unfortunately), including an actual port of the arcade game, are included with the 2010 game. It's worth picking up just for that as the game itself is love it or hate it. 1 is a little more classic but 2 is probably my favorite. The closest you could get to playing an 80's horror movie in the 16-bit era.
I will say the 2010 remake is definitely worth checking out. It's a cross between a 3D and 2D brawler, in a similar vein to God of War. The combat's nowhere near as deep as that, but it still has some surprising depth to it, and the story and writing's really good. You can also unlock the original 3 games as bonuses, which has the completely uncensored Arcade original of the first game instead of the Turbo port.
You should play the 2010 remake for PS3 or Xbox 360. Easy way for people to play the original 3 games as follows: Beat the following Phases on any difficulty to unlock the original Splatterhouse trilogy. Beat Phases 1-2 - Unlock Splatterhouse Beat Phases 1-4 - Unlock Splatterhouse 2 Beat Phases 1-8 - Unlock Splatterhouse
I've never owned a Splatterhouse so I appreciate the reviews. How about a Drunk "Games You Should Play on Halloween" list? Seems like a logical next step.
I used to own a Splatterhouse! Nice place but upkeep was a literal nightmare. I ended up spending much less time there compared to what I had envisioned. Sold it back in 2011. Would not recommend.
Cronenberg parallel is spot on, but there is little of Lovecraft in the series. Just shows how popular culture absolutely twists whatever phenomenon that becomes trendy. Lovecraft was never about straight up gore and his wierd in not visceral but fantastical. Splatterhouse is splatterpunk to the bone, relying on sharp gruesome visuals, while Lovecraft is often abstract. The Mask is probably the only relatively lovecraftian thing in those games, being an evil artifact with its own pocket dimension.
Splatterhouse was one of the first Sega games I played, and man did it disturb me in my youth. Not really so much the monsters or gore, but the story and it's presentation... yes, for a simple Sega game. 2 was the main game I remember (I played all 4 later), and in that chapter Jennifer was a trapped soul constantly saying "help me" and screaming in a digitized voice while getting grabbed and dragged through demonic portals... whole thing was fugged. 😁👍
I remember being a kid and falling in love with splatter house first because the name sounded like the coolest name for a game i have ever heard of (even though i didnt understood what it meant back then) and also for being so gory and scary for me as a child
Splatterhouse 3 is the best one hands down I was straight up addicted to that one game when I was a child another good one was Ninja: Shadow of Darkness
This is a great series of games. They are simple but so much fun. The remake is enjoyable. It got a bad wrap for the camera but I still enjoyed it. As well you unlock the original games with it.
The 2010 game is a decent with mid-upper difficulty. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it combines modern 3D beat 'em up with 2D throwback style. Also, it includes all the original games (except wanpaku graffiti, unfortunately)
It's amazing how well the mood and atmosphere of the Splatterhouse games hold up. I'm a big horror fan, but I find most horror impossible to take seriously. It just lacks that kind of impact... the kind that the Splatterhouse games have. There's something about the foggy, decaying, slime and organ drenched environments... the deformed monsters that are all tumors and fangs... and a mask that's simultaneously untrustworthy, evil, and your only guide through this hellscape to save a loved one who is probably going to end up possessed, tortured, and mutilated anyway. It's just such a profoundly nihilistic game. It doesn't let up. That design direction just pervades every aspect of the game in a way that you rarely see anywhere else.
I think just presenting the first two games as "beat em up strictly on a 2d plane" because it plays like something, you gotta take your time with, learn patterns, be cautious, have quick reflexes. I mean its one of those games where touching the enemy hurts you, so fighting the enemies is closer to castlevania than to Final Fight. I'm just saying, there is really more to the gameplay, if you wanna advance, than "beat the crap out of everything". You really gotta pick well when to punch and when not.
The arcade SplatterHouse was also released on the Wii Virtual Console, but only in japan alongside many other arcade games. Also,i'm sure someone else has already clarified this, but SplatterHouse 3 wasn't released for the Megadrive(the european Megadrive)It was released for the japanese Megadrive oviously though.
First heard about this series from Derek Alexander (Happy Video Game Nerd/Stop Skeletons From Fighting) and Ben Hall (Video Game Take-Out) years back. Since then, I've gotten my own physical copy of Splatterhouse 2 and have unlocked the first and third games in the Splatterhouse remake. I haven't had the time to dive into the third game too much and I've never even touched Wanpaku Graffiti or however you spell that but the rest of the series (including the remake) are must own games for definite! My favorite is SH2 and I make sure to make it one of the three games I play through every Halloween. For anyone interested in playing these classics, I strongly suggest buying the Xbox 360 and PS3 remake. You have to unlock the classic games as you go along but the remake is also a blast to play (save for those awful load times) and it's a hell of a lot cheaper than paying $40+ for each individual cartridge.
Man, thank you for this review! Literally THE most underrated series of all time, which is a true crime! We can sure use a sequel for that reboot, someday, too!
I regret that I had to wait until my 20's to play the Splatterhouse games. I still enjoy the heck out of them, but I can only imagine how I would've reacted playing them as a child when they first came out. Nothing quite like the Splatterhouse games. I haven't played the remake, but most people tell me it's good, just not great or similar enough to the originals.
My introduction to the series was actually through the remake. It's a fun game and pretty over the top with the gore and the humor. As others have pointed out it does have it's flaws and could be a little glitchy sometimes but it was great fun. I've played the originals some but need to give them more attention soon! Great video!
2 is my personal favorite, despite the difficulty, but I like all of the games in the series (including the two you didn't mention, Wanpaku Graffiti and the 2010 remake). The time limit in 3 is a bit too frustrating for it to be truly great, though.
The entire series is fantastic from beginning to end. The remake gets shit on a lot but it is a fun game, though it has a lot of flaws for a 2010 game. Sure, for the most part it is style over substance, but the total package, like you said, is what makes them great
I love the 2010 game. Its fun to play and the presentation is mind blowing. Plus you don't have to choose between the remake and the original trilogy because those are included in the Remake.
I had the honor of owning a TB-16 and Splatterhouse back in the day. I never finished it back then. I tried and I tried. Last year I finished it with the help of youtube and I'm a bit pissed because I remember the stuff at the end of the game. Apparently got really close back then. I remember beating Keith Courage so there's that. I am a boss at the stupid basketball game and the wrestling game and the hockey game and the football game. I had R-Type too but I'm never going there again. Rage....nothing but rage.
Huuuuuge Splatterhouse fan here. Great reviews of the games, I appreciate mentioning the soundtrack of the original, which isn't mentioned nearly as often as I'd like it to. Oh, and have you played the arcade version of the original game? Definetily check it out, personally it's much, much better than the TG-16 version.
I played the last 2 from memory on Mega Drive or Genesis as it's called in other places. Very fun game, the visuals and overall style of the game is distracting enough to not worry too much about 'substance', too busy splattering shit to care.
I love the entire series. I own the remake for the Xbox 360 and I enjoyed it. I felt like instead of trying to change the series, they embraced it. I couldn't believe it when they had a finishing move where you pull the spine out of a monster's asshole. It's unfortunate that the remake ended on a cliff hanger and they haven't made another.
You really need to play the remake. I was going to avoid , but then I found out that the original Arcade game and the 2 Genesis followups were unlockable, I was sold. It turns out the renake isn't all that awful either. Not brilliant, but I did enjoy it quite a bit.
Play the 360 version. Crazy as hell, more than just a beat them up, an arena mode, and you can save it. Plus ripping enemies in half and tearing their heads off is great.
You should definitely check out Splatterhouse for ps3/360 I had for 360 it was a lot of fun, challenging but not too difficult, over the top blood and gore. Sometimes it flashes buttons to press and you do something awesome and kill them in some gruesome way, pop there head, rip out there colon. Not too long probably beat it in a day or two. Story is the same save jenn, There's time travel human sacrifices. And bonus you can unlock splatterhouse 1, 2, 3 and play them.
Great video !! I just beat part two & three on the genesis (everdrive with cheats enabled) and had a damn good time doing it. I recommend these games highly. I will definitely be revisiting these games come Halloween time 🎃
I'm not too big a fan of the 3rd game...2nd game is hard but I believe the 3rd one pushes it too far. However the 2010 Splatterhouse game is worth it, it has its problems but the core of the game is fantastic. It also has all 3 original Splatterhouse games as unlockables
RosySquiggle Yeah, you should absolutely not write off the "reboot" despite the negative reception. As mentioned in this video, don't expect anything amazing gameplay-wise, but it is really enjoyable as a god of war like game. However having played through the game I gotta caution that there are some parts that are insanely frustrating. Luckily the presentation and story is super entertaining so it is worth getting through some of the shitty parts. But even if you don't enjoy the main game you still get all of the previous games (the first game is the better arcade version and not the gimped tg16 version).
The remake was Ok. The load time could’ve been better, and the gameplay’s a bit repetitive, but I personally enjoyed it. It also have all three original games as bonus content.
Thanks for this, that difficulty sounds....difficult. I love me some Dark Souls though so who knows. I just picked up a Repro of 3 for $1.75 on ali express shipped lol
The ps3/360 remake is worth it. It's dirt cheap and while the gameplay isn't fantastic and it's riddled with bugs, its atmosphere and story are great. Oh, and it has all 3 of the original games on it, including the superior Arcade version of the first game.
Splatterhouse 2 is ridiculously fucking difficult because everything else moves so much faster than Rick does and it’s impossible to dodge shit sometimes.
uncensored PC Engine for Part 1 uncensored Mega Drive for Part 2 uncensored Mega Drive for Part 3 all the North American versions have censorship.. but there are patches available
The 360 version is amazing I strongly recommend you play it...and would enjoy a review on it because I don't think it got enough credit for what it has to offer
I've never played the originals but I platinumed the PS3 remake years ago, it was loads of fun. SBI would have censored the hell out of it if it was made these days though...
Wow, so i was just watchin this and i cant believe i didnt think of this til now. The game is called Splatterhouse. Guy in a jason mask. Eminem had a pic wearin a jason mask and overalls. Years later calles his team the Slaughterhouse. He couldve gotten the name from somewhere else, but if so that's one big coincidence i didnt even know. Well onto the next snes video
Aside from the Evil Dead movies (especially Evil Dead 2), the original Splatterhouse trilogy also draws inspirado from 'House' from 1986, possibly also 'House' from 1977 (aka 'Hausu'), definitely 'The Deadly Spawn', possibly also 'The Kindred', and lots of others. It wears its inspirado on its sleeve just like the original Flashback. 2:51 Probably inspired by Ash *APPEARING* to return to the cabin in Evil Dead 2. Of course, anyone who's not a complete idiot can see that Evil Dead is *NOT* a remake of 'The Evil Dead'. Ash didn't "return" to the cabin. Sam Raimi and company just had to cobble together a quick prologue because they couldn't get the rights to their own movie. 3:37 Here's something I've never understood about video game logic. If your character is wielding a melee weapon, then why should they bother to kick? Standing or crouching doesn't matter. If you've got a melee weapon, then that's what you use. Maybe if your enemy is close enough to you to grapple your weapon in an attempt to take it from you, then you could kick them or plant your foot in their torso and try to push them away. But that's not applicable to games from this era. Or maybe it is. I don't know. Just because I never played a beat-em-up that was that complex doesn't mean at least one didn't exist. It wouldn't be too farfetched either. After all, plenty of beat-em-ups have enemies that can latch onto you and slow you down until you shake them off. In the NES version of Trojan, your character had a functional shield that you could actively use to block attacks. He could even lose his sword and shield, and scrounge up new ones, resorting to martial arts while disarmed. 4:57 I've always hated time limits! Time limits are for speedrunners. Some of us prefer to take our time to enjoy freeform exploration.
Nothing beats the arcade original (which runs like a dream on Snes Mini via MAME 2003, by the way). I'll always love the PC Engine dearly but nowadays a lot of the outstanding arcade ports it made its name on are kinda redundant with such easy access to high quality arcade emulation.
The ps3/360 game is a 3d action game in the vein as God of War or castlevania lords of shadows, but splatterhouse. I found it fun, but mot as good as the original, which is included with 2 and 3... so overall worth it
I'd agree it plays the best. Rick is so fast in Wanpaku Grafitti. He doesn't even need to stop running to swing his weapon. He's normally such a slow, lumbering character to control that it feels great when he can zip around so quickly.
The first one really embodies the Splatterhouse atmosphere for me. I will never forget some of the crazy bosses they had like fighting a possessed room. I enjoyed the 2nd just wasnt as good as 1 and 3 got really scary with the cutscenes and gory but the gameplay seemed to get too technical
Apart from clunky combat (not too clunky but definitely noticeable) and awkward camera movement, the 2010 remake is definitely worth a try if you are a fan of Splatterhouse.
You mentioned PS3/Xbox 360 so I'm wondering if you ever checked out Hard Corps: Uprising. It's Contra with a different title and it's by far the best Contra of them all. I think it's still available for like less than 5 bux.
Aggggg. This is the only xxxdrunk game I've ever not been able to thumb up. Where is Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti , the best Splatterhouse game, if not the best Famicom-only game.
Anybody getting into game design should look up some of the 8-bit conversions of many heavy metal songs that have been done.pointless rabbitholes and Thor high heels...small UA-camrs you should check out if you are here..
My parents actually let me rent Splatterhouse 3 when I was a little kid--for some ungodly reason--and I just remembering it scaring the ever-loving shit out of me.

Beat Phases 1-2 - Unlock Splatterhouse
Beat Phases 1-4 - Unlock Splatterhouse 2
Beat Phases 1-8 - Unlock Splatterhouse
The arcade version of the original is arguably the best game in the series. There’s way more gore and the soundtrack is awesome.
The soundtrack is awesome. I read that the soundchip in the arcade was used in budget synths, so the game is technically up there with take on me.
I dug in it on a high quality hand held I don't remember the name of now. It was not a game gear.
@@KCUFyoufordoxingme could it be the turbo grafix hand held? Or maybe the nomad?
No. Splatterhouse 3 is the best one period.
The Xbox360/PS3 remake has some flaws, but overall, a pretty decent game. And it has all three old games, as unlockable extra.
I concur 👍
I've never owned a Splatterhouse so I appreciate the reviews. How about a Drunk "Games You Should Play on Halloween" list? Seems like a logical next step.
J3R3MY @snesdrunk this
I'm from the future, he did it lol
He even did a 2nd one lol
I used to own a Splatterhouse! Nice place but upkeep was a literal nightmare. I ended up spending much less time there compared to what I had envisioned. Sold it back in 2011. Would not recommend.

You do? Interesting.
Nintendo Hodge i didnt have any trouble with the camera on the remake
The 2010 game is a decent with mid-upper difficulty. It doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it combines modern 3D beat 'em up with 2D throwback style. Also, it includes all the original games (except wanpaku graffiti, unfortunately)

Let's not forget Splatterhouse 2010 for Xbox 360/PS3. It's no God of War or Devil May Cry, but it's much better than people give it credit for.
i totally adore Splatterhouse X360
Simple gameplay but hard, Creepy, Gore, Lovecraft ... I love these game gotta get Splatter house 3 still tough
The entire series is fantastic from beginning to end. The remake gets shit on a lot but it is a fun game, though it has a lot of flaws for a 2010 game.
Sure, for the most part it is style over substance, but the total package, like you said, is what makes them great

Drink a Beer and Play a Game the remake was a great game
Kos4Evr indeed
DEMONIC DEFENSE I had a ton of fun with it
I had the honor of owning a TB-16 and Splatterhouse back in the day. I played the last 2 from memory on Mega Drive or Genesis as it's called in other places. Very fun game, the visuals and overall style of the game is distracting enough to not worry too much about 'substance', too busy splattering shit to care.
Love these games! Great Work as ALWAYS brotha 👍
I wish you had talked more about the 2010 Splatterhouse game which is not only a blast to play but includes the original trilogy.
Great video, and i love all the Splatter houses and to me personally the 2010 remake is awesome to 😄.
they are all very good, and scared the shit out of me when I was a kid.
Kudos to Slatterhouse for not letting the main character falling face first like a poor demented Taito style
I've only played Splatterhouse 3 but I loved it. I couldn't believe it was on a 16 bit system.
I agree that the grotesque monsters in splatterhouse are inspired and shocking
I love the entire series. I own the remake for the Xbox 360 and I enjoyed it. I felt like instead of trying to change the series, they embraced it. I couldn't believe it when they had a finishing move where you pull the spine out of a monster's asshole. It's unfortunate that the remake ended on a cliff hanger and they haven't made another.

The second game was brutally hard. The boat chase with the Octopus particularly
Dude, fucking Cronenberg is one of my top 5 favorite directors! Videodrome, Scanners, and Dead Ringers are three of my favorites films ✌❤
Play the 360 version. Crazy as hell, more than just a beat them up, an arena mode, and you can save it. Plus ripping enemies in half and tearing their heads off is great.
As a kid, this game scared the fuck outta me on Turbo Grafx...I was a little bitch lol
can confirm splatterhouse 3 made me phyiscally sick as a lil kid playing on the megadrive
You should definitely check out Splatterhouse for ps3/360 I had for 360 it was a lot of fun, challenging but not too difficult, over the top blood and gore. Great video !! I just beat part two & three on the genesis (everdrive with cheats enabled) and had a damn good time doing it. I recommend these games highly. I will definitely be revisiting these games come Halloween time 🎃
Did you really "beat it" if you used cheats? 🤔
That's actually one of the most creative story lines I've heard it's pretty dope
I'm not too big a fan of the 3rd game...2nd game is hard but I believe the 3rd one pushes it too far. However the 2010 Splatterhouse game is worth it, it has its problems but the core of the game is fantastic.

I spent so much money on the splatterhouse arcade machine as a kid. love it. love all of the games including the ps3 reboot. very underrated.
Agreed, he's so stiff and lumbering. That's why I like 3 the best.
Greetings Earthlings! ✌👽✌ This series was pretty Gory and entertaining to game.
Always been a big fan of the first two Splatterhouse games. I first saw it in the arcade as a child. Scared the hell out of me😄
Remember, the original Splatterhouse had an arcade perfect port on the FM Towns/Marty.
3:04 - These ropes say "FU". XD XD XD They should take Rick from Splatterhouse 3 and put him into Streets of Rage also. That would be cool.
Let me guess, Rick ends up brutally murdering the thugs and making their blood and organs spill out instead of beating them till they are unconscious.
The music is so good, too!
All of them, including the 2010 remake (which the originals are included)and Wanpaku Graffiti.
Dr. West, obvious nod to Dr. Herbert West in H.P. Lovecraft's Reanimator series... though I'm sure the game creators were referencing the '85 film.
This series is so awesome that it inspired a Japanese fan game called "Splatter Beach" with rather interesting graphics 🙂
I love all 4 games!!
Great video as always!
With all the Saga collection games that came out for PS2, 3&4 splatter house never was added but it should have been
uncensored PC Engine for Part 1
uncensored Mega Drive for Part 2
uncensored Mega Drive for Part 3
all the North American versions have censorship.. but there are patches available
My local video store had the arcade cabinet right next to the horror section . It was incredible.
The 360 version is amazing I strongly recommend you play it...and would enjoy a review on it because I don't think it got enough credit for what it has to offer
Gonna play the Mame version on my Pie tomorrow thank you
The splatterhouse games are great fun for an October month lineup and zombies are my neighbors and lollipop chainsaw and on and on
I've never played the originals but I platinumed the PS3 remake years ago, it was loads of fun.
This deserves a good remake.
Loved the Arcade and Genesis games.
Dr. West is clearly a reference to "Re-Animator". Awesome. If I ever meet Jeffrey Combs again I'll ask if he got royalties 😂.
The game also took inspiration from Re Animator (Lovecraft tale and 1985 movie).Dr. West was the crazy scientist who bring the dead back to life.
@@carlosaugustodinizgarcia3526 Jeffrey Combs is one of the greats!
Honestly you can't go wronge with any of them there all fun
Nothing beats the arcade original (which runs like a dream on Snes Mini via MAME 2003, by the way). I'll always love the PC Engine dearly but nowadays a lot of the outstanding arcade ports it made its name on are kinda redundant with such easy access to high quality arcade emulation.
You should check Spatterhouse for famicom - japan exclusive. Gorgeous game!
The ps3/360 game is a 3d action game in the vein as God of War or castlevania lords of shadows, but splatterhouse. I found it fun, but mot as good as the original, which is included with 2 and 3... so overall worth it
Love your videos bro
Got the one on PS3 for $10 CIB, good deal!
There's also a really fun Japanese exclusive splatterhouse called Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti which had a chibi style but was still great
Matthew Tyler not to mention hard as nails
Japanese exclusives often tend to be, damn their infernal gaming skill :P
That's actually the best one in my opinion, at least gameplay-wise
Nathan Stent thanks for taking time out your day to disagree captain
J.R. Spliff 212 Best Contra? Uh...no, that goes to Contra 4.
do a review on the battle of olympus!! focus on the music!!! and how its a the love child of only 3 developers!!! please! its my favorite game ever!
Soooo awesome bro 👍🍒👊
The new version includes the first three games on the disc, worth a pick up just for that.
I’d say this series is a little more Cronenberg meets Lovecraft. Also I really liked the remake!
Also some Stuart Gordon and Tobe Hooper for good measure.
The evil Jason mask
the remake is epic
The splatterhouse games kick ass. 😀👍🎮
That weird Chibi nes splatterhouse is a blast
Play the originals on Splatterhouse PS3.
Aggggg. This is the only xxxdrunk game I've ever not been able to thumb up. Where is Splatterhouse: Wanpaku Graffiti
, the best Splatterhouse game, if not the best Famicom-only game.
My fav game series!!!!
I was afraid of this game when I was a kid, but played regardless, but nothing is scarier than NES Robocop 2 game over screen.
I loved this game
I suggest the DOOM mod splatterhouse ..
Its ABSOLUTELY AWESOME
