There's a sliding kick in this game that's really useful during some situations. It also does double damage. You have to jump forward, hold diagonally down and then attack just as you're hitting the ground.
+MMAGillz Yup. They should blur it out or something. It offended all my Jewish friends. The fact the monsters do it is also offensive. They might as well just be carrying swastikas.
I used to think it was pretty weird seeing all these youtube/internet guys loving SNES and that. In the UK nearly everyone had a Mega Drive. I can't imagine SNES being the boss. It's all about Mega Drive to me. Even though now I have gone back and played and loved a bunch of SNES games. Still seems a bit weird.
Those Genesis buttons are the loudest thing ever. I love the sound of vintage games being played. The creaking controller shell included. It's like a tension indicator; with the creaky crescendo at the boss fights.
Splatterhouse to is an underrated franchise with so much potential. I wish Namco would do more with it. Splatterhouse 2 was my favorite in the original series.
CF-105 Games You're right I did miss out. I did have my SNES back then and I was so immersed with it. If it weren't for compilation discs, I probably would have never played alot of the classic games. Phantasy Star I played but through an emulator. I'm hoping to get a retro Sega console. While the virtual consoles do carry some games, I tend to think they lack from the original so I don't buy them as often. As far as I know, there isn't a Spaltterhouse compilation. I would like to see them all on one disc. Perhaps have the originals along with an HD type version.
javi m your right. da way u play da splatter house games, not counting da 3rd game or remake of-course, is 2 take your time 2 time da hits 2 da monsters. u can beat levels in splatter house 1 and 2 without getting hit even once if u are jus careful, and time when u attack things.
It's great listening to James' and Mike's stories. I don't care for let's plays but still I listening to every story you tell from your childhood. Good job guys!!
I owned this game growing up. My brother & I would play it all the time. This & many other SEGA Genesis exclusives made me proud to be a SEGA Genesis owner back in the day.
"A big, blistering ball sack puking green slime in your face" "Yeah, I mean who wouldn't want that?" - Mike Matei, 10/4/15 (Disclaimer: I know what he means! Its just funny)
The Joker actually appeared in Batman #1 which was published April 25th, 1940. Batman however appeared originally in Detective Comics in May of 1939 but wasn't always the star of the comic.
One of the running jokes about the Joker in the comics is that his backstory changes all the time and he even acknowledges it "If I'm going to have a backstory I'd prefer it to be multiple choice" which is one of the reasons in the Nolan movie he tells a different story every time when he explains how he got the smile.
I noticed that you guys always run into the enemies, you don't read their movements at all. It's so easy for them to land a hit on you when you just mindlessly run at them. Take your time and focus, there's no timer in this game.
The dude wearing the mask actually looks like a normal person from what I understand. According to the little bit of lore there is for Splatterhouse, the main character allows the mask to posses him so he can save somebody.
I've had this old childhood memory, of going to my friends house when I was about nine and playing a genesis game he rented. All I could remember about the game was playing as Jason Voorhees where you could smash opponents into a 🧱 With a stick. I couldn't remember the name of the game nor did my friend who rented it but I was blown away it. I'm 35 now and just now realized it's "Splatter House 2". Thanks James
About that conversation James and Mike were having in the beginning of the video, you see, that's the good thing about the 4th generation, all 3 of the main game systems back then were really good! I'm a bit too young but I managed to grow up with a Super Nintendo, but when I got my Wii, through Virtual Console I discovered the systems that competed with the Super Nintendo, the Genesis and the Turbografx 16, and I've loved all 3 4th gen systems a LOT! Games like Shinobi 3, Ristar, Soldier Blade and Ys book 1 and 2 blew my mind! I didn't have games like that on the Super Nintendo! Each system has its own plethora of amazing games and all 3 are very much worth re-discovering even to this day! I still love the Super Nintendo the best because it was my childhood system, but I have a very soft spot for the Genesis and the Turbografx in my heart (especially the turbo which grew to be my 3rd favourite game system of all time, losing only to the SNES and the GBA)
i never even heard of turbografx 16 until now lol, and i was born in 85. you either had sega or Nintendo when I was a kid (i picked sega, a cousin always got Nintendo) i stuck with sega until they stopped making consoles, he abandoned Nintendo when the ps2 came out. i got GameCube the next year then Xboxs since - he's stuck with PlayStation. we trade when he wants to play xbox exclusives, then I play the PlayStation ones. but the wii to us was the last straw for Nintendo systems - they seem to have turned to gimmicks since power didn't work (n64 was most powerful at the time, ps1 crushed it; GameCube was more powerful than ps2, ps2 crushed it and Xbox combined)
Just to clarify about the Jokers origin... or to unclarify. The Joker has several origins. Each is a story he's told. Only one, or maybe none, are true. It's all a joke told by Joker.
Damn the SplatterHouse games seem like the perfect games for James seeing as he is such a horror fanatic. I can't believe he never got to play them when he was growing up.
to do the slide, jump and perform a ryu's fireball and punch right before you land - its really helpful. I love this game, play it on my genesis all the time, the bosses are worth checking out
I like your attitude's, I'm in my 30's so I'm familiar with the game gem's you guy's are pulling from. See I said the same remark as Splatterhouse 1, the thing is I am amazed with your production. ggrreeaatt ssttuuff !!
Watching James played this game makes me question his complaints in many AVGN episodes. Maybe the games are fine but he's just bad at playing video game? Of course there are some legit hard games like Silver Surfer and Battle Toad but a game like Splatterhouse or Code Name:Viper from last week is not that hard at all. Why the hell didn't you read enemy's movement? Of course you're going to get your ass handed if you run into enemies like an idiot like that.
The squeaking grunt of the d pad brings back memories. I never knew there was Splatterhouse games other than the one on PS3 until watching you guys play them.
gombagod Sega during the Mega Drive era appealed more to Europeans and South Americans it wasn't until the Saturn era where Sega had a more Japanese dominated focus, with the Saturn outselling the N64 in Japan
I hadn't much thought about reasons behind the letter order on NES controls.... but now that I think about it, the general right to left reading order of Japanese might be why we have B and A rather than A and B...
The thought occurred to me, but it should be taken into account that different people at different companies can make different decisions, also that is 16-bit era vs 8-bit era, where another company can try to improve on what they see as mistakes of their rival to look better in comparison, while Nintendo just had to double down and continue with their lettering scheme by getting X and Y backwards, as well, when they got to the 16-bit era. (Sega's 8-bit system, the Sega Master System, didn't have letters, they had button 1(start) and button 2, so obviously they took the lettering idea from _somewhere_...)
Sega's founders are both Hawaiians though, when the Master System and Genesis were released, they still had to be approved by those guys. The real reason though, why all controllers are shaped differently and have odd layouts. Controller patents, especially in Japan where patents don't expire. Which is why no controller anywhere on the market has a D-Pad that is the same, or works the same as a Nintendo D-Pad.
Splatterhouse sounds like it should be a game where you have diarrhea and you run around a huge house in search of a toilet before time runs out. If you fail...SPLATTERHOUSE!
I like these videos because theyre really down to earth. Most other youtubers are really biased about anything other than what theyre nostalgic about and usually just talk shit. and though these two are obviously nes freaks. No matter what they play, they dont really care too much about the platform or if its an obscure nitch, its just them trying the games they want to play.
You have to jump and hit the attack button as soon as you hit the ground. It seems like it helps to do a half jump. In any case, your timing has to be perfect. Watching these 2 try to beat this game without the slide attack is painful to watch. I just keep yelling at my computer.
You seriously quoted GG.i was so into him.Collected every recording and pounded it into my brain. That was exactly what i needed too.It really strengthened me and gave me raw energy and m ade me not afraid of girls or too polite.
Mike and James, Love the way you set up the shot of both of you...up close, personal---like the camera was set waaay back, but then zoomed in---Very nicely "Cinematic" !
+Daoriond This was driving me nuts! Had to stop the video. Again and again, run in a jump kick the guy and take a hit every single time. After 1 or 2 times, you'd think they'd try and use some kind of strategy. Gonna go play this now, and see how far I can get!
I love you guys and I love James & Mike Mondays but watching you having trouble at most games is amazing...when you take turns I laugh so hard "here you try" like that's going to be helpful!!!
The trick with the chainsaw boss in the first game is to avoid pushing him back to the edge of the screeen because he will immediately jump accross the screeen at you. Shoot him two or three times then let him get close and repeat.
Another problem with watch Doctor Who from the beginning is that chunks of it are missing. Footage forever lost. Nearly all of the 2nd Doctor's run is gone. Maybe some of the 3rd's.
+chippz lemonz It wasn't that they fucked up it's that around the time they start taping over them Doctor Who became an embarrassment for BBC. They were constantly trying to kill the show for good. Though I did hear they found a whole 97 of lost Doctor Who tapes in some country in Africa or something.
I've played the game long enough to know that in order to get past the 2nd level boss, you must kick it in the eyes, while fighting off the waves of spooks that it spits out.
I love how James watches Doctor Who, it's one of the greatest things on TV in my opinion. Basically James you just have to start at 2005 when the reboot started with "Rose." They fill people in on the past episodes that haven't seen it (like me.) Great series just fantastic and you guys are too. Keep up the good work!
Joker did show up without origin, back in the 40's. In the 50's, they added the acid bath as the fate of a villain Batman was never able to unmask, being The Red Hood. Joker revealed that he had been the Red Hood, like in Arkham Origins and Killing Joke. Jason Todd adopted the moniker to avenge his 'death' at Joker's hands.
I remember playing that as a kid. There was a water park about an hour and a half away from my house as a kid. It had it in the arcade, it was excellent.
lmao processing was literally all Genesis had compared to snes Genesis is inferior in many ways if you want to get technical look up the specs of both.
The Genesis did have a fast processor, but in terms of graphics and sound, it wasn't as good as the SNES. Companies like Sega and Konami still managed to do some impressive stuff with it though. Just look at the Sonic games and games like Contra Hardcorps, Castlevania Bloodlines, and Rocket Knight Adventures
Mr_Beezlebub the genesis cpu is only fast in math. The average mips output of both cpus is astonishingly close together........with the already mentioned exception in the math handling. That is why there are so many polygon based games on genesis.....and so little on snes (they needed an expansive math chip to do such games, like the one in star fox). The real problems of the snes were a.) to little ram, it really needed a little more and b.) (more Important) the bandwith of many sections of the system was to small for the amount of data. They had been making to many compromises to save money in my opinion.
I'd always heard the "B and A" thing on the NES was because the Japanese often read things right to left. Basically a localization mistake.
That makes sense since Manga is supposed to be read like that, but James’ (b)efore and (a)fter explanation is the one I knew about forever lol
Wouldn't necessarily call that a mistake
Thats what i always assumed
Can't remember the actual reason, but that's not it.
Not a mistake, they avoided a lot of confusion for translations by keeping it the same.
There's a sliding kick in this game that's really useful during some situations. It also does double damage.
You have to jump forward, hold diagonally down and then attack just as you're hitting the ground.
I was always a Genesis guy, people usually overlook the classics on that system.
I was always an Snes guy. Nobody overlooked the so called classics on the overrated genesis
Let’s be honest, the Super Nintendo was much better
Yes that’s is so true
That’s fine I was snes guy as well but it didn’t have splatterhouse 2 and 3. They both have there place in history.
they're both legendary... let's just leave it at that
I love James and Mike cool stories, good video editors, inspiring , hardcore, funny , etc
+C.Funk99 Thanks! And thanks for watching!

+Cinemassacre Damn, James is a psycho :D
+MMAGillz Yup. They should blur it out or something. It offended all my Jewish friends. The fact the monsters do it is also offensive. They might as well just be carrying swastikas.

It's all about Mega Drive to me. Even though now I have gone back and played and loved a bunch of SNES games. Still seems a bit weird.
David Nash in brazil is the same
Same in Argentina. In fact, I NEVER knew anybody with a SNES neither saw a single console IRL (only in magazines), until my early 20s.
Same story in Poland. That's because Gensis did what Nintendidn't.
I live in Denmark. I never even heard of the Mega Drive until coming across AVGN as an adult.
The best SNES games weren't released in UK. No FFVI or Crono Trigger, so the Mega Drive was the best bet.
Splatterhouse 1 is still the best Splatterhouse in every regard in my opinion.
+Game Sack Hey guys :)
Which version?
+TonyLikeGames2 Arcade dummy.
leeboy2k1
I was asking Game Sack, dummy.
+Game Sack Holy shit game sack
You're officially well into the depths of nerd-dom when you refer to a hockey stick as a "hockey club". Love it.
Those Genesis buttons are the loudest thing ever. I love the sound of vintage games being played. The creaking controller shell included. It's like a tension indicator; with the creaky crescendo at the boss fights.
Great pick.
'Zombies Ate My Neighbors' for this month!
Yea please!
+Intimidation Splatterhouse 3 is next week.
+Intimidation ft Jontron.
i've wanted that fovever
+Intimidation One of my fav games ever. Love that hell out of that game.
Splatterhouse to is an underrated franchise with so much potential. I wish Namco would do more with it. Splatterhouse 2 was my favorite in the original series.
This is my favorite classic horror spoof game besides Zombies Ate My Neighbors! Keep on splattering!
My favorite horror game is Super Castlevania 4; I like Zombies ate my Neighbors and splatterhouse 2; but they're hard as shit
"Is that his face!?" Wtf its his mask ahahah
Never had a Genesis nor played the Splatterhouse series. I guess I missed out. But now after watching this, I'm more intrigued to want to try it out.
CF-105 Games

It's great listening to James' and Mike's stories.
I don't care for let's plays but still I listening to every story you tell from your childhood.
Good job guys!!
You guys should play MANHUNT! Anyone else agree?
i totally agree, would love to see their reactions to some of the executions :-)
+TheCore4more hopefully they see this guys! That game was great! and like you guys said, great choice for Halloween.
+Chris Watson nah, better AITD or SH1, and maybe Clock Tower.. manhunt was gruesome but not scary
It'll be so bad just like what they did when they played Indiana Jones 64
Kaz Kobb
yeah they're really bad at 3D games, lol
James and Mike bring a smile to my face no matter what game they're playing together. Great stuff!
Totally wasn't expecting you guys to bust out some GG Allin quotes. James NAILED that impression, lol.
I owned this game growing up. My brother & I would play it all the time. This & many other SEGA Genesis exclusives made me proud to be a SEGA Genesis owner back in the day.

this whole game is about patterns, you can do this whole game without getting hit once :)
it's 12:11 am, welp might as well watch this than go on a cinemassacre marathon. your stuff never gets old James! you rock too Mike!
I love the Splatterhouse series, my childhood fears.
Get your hands on 2 Crude Dudes and play that together. Hilarious and fun as heck.
"How many of these fucking cocks?!"

sega genesis classics , pantera t-shirt , ggalin references and trivia , hardcore gaming , cool guys ... made my monday

Now I want to play the 360 game and unlock the originals again. Good times!
I've had this old childhood memory, of going to my friends house when I was about nine and playing a genesis game he rented. I definitely see the price of Splatterhouse for xbox 360 and ps3 going up after this since you can unlock Splatterhouse 1-3 on it.

and you must try gunstar heroes, maybe the best 16bit era
crazymetallian Oh I've already played Gunstar Heroes, that game is amazing!
i never even heard of turbografx 16 until now lol, and i was born in 85. you either had sega or Nintendo when I was a kid (i picked sega, a cousin always got Nintendo)
i stuck with sega until they stopped making consoles, he abandoned Nintendo when the ps2 came out. i got GameCube the next year then Xboxs since - he's stuck with PlayStation.

I was lucky enough to have the Master System, then the Mega Drive 2. My uncle had the nes, the snes and the mega cd so I had all bases covered.
Just to clarify about the Jokers origin... or to unclarify. The Joker has several origins. Each is a story he's told. Only one, or maybe none, are true. It's all a joke told by Joker.

i loved the final part when james yells "im done with this" after they said splatterhouse it's not a game for pussies hahaha
A Whovian who appreciates the old-school stuff. Respect, brother.
Mike is always tryin to go for the bone.
to do the slide, jump and perform a ryu's fireball and punch right before you land - its really helpful. I love this game, play it on my genesis all the time, the bosses are worth checking out
splatterhouse 3 is pretty badass
"My body is like a machine gun, my mind is a bullet and my audience are my target!" Who the hell said that!? Lol somebody let me know

Great choice of a game to highlight for October. Looking forward to Splatterhouse 3 now.
Come on, guys. Put some effort into it. Get the BONE!!! Kick it... Punch it... Splatter the house! Don't jump so much in the elevator. :D
Even when you don't get very far, your videos are really entertaining! Keep it up guys!

Splatterhouse is NOT an easy game.
The squeaking grunt of the d pad brings back memories. I never knew there was Splatterhouse games other than the one on PS3 until watching you guys play them.
That elevator is Hell. This game would have scared me as a kid, I used to be scared of everything back then XD

This is the episode of James & Mike Mondays that made me laugh the hardest. Well done, guys!
You guys should play the 2010 reboot of this series for an episode of J&M Mondays.
5:31 that is EXACTLY the same reason why I don't watch Dr. Who, despite how many people nag me to do so.
I hadn't much thought about reasons behind the letter order on NES controls.... but now that I think about it, the general right to left reading order of Japanese might be why we have B and A rather than A and B...

James and Mike Mondays Drinking Game: Every time you hear Mike or James say "Yeaaah" in one of these videos, take a drink.
One thing I never understood about these Splatterhouse games is how to do the damn slide.
+trustobey1016 lol it was easy once you get use to it. it was all about timing. once you got it its the most powerful move in the game
yea i know how to do it but i can only do it like half of the time
It comes out when it wants to
You have to jump and hit the attack button as soon as you hit the ground. It seems like it helps to do a half jump. In any case, your timing has to be perfect. Watching these 2 try to beat this game without the slide attack is painful to watch. I just keep yelling at my computer.

I had to shut the damn video off because of how bad they are
Haha, I remember beating this Live, it was brutal!
Thanks for playing this you nerds, I love this series!
Beavis and Butt-Head for sega genesis. Seriously, is a fun co-op game. Give it a try guys!
yes, they are different. And the genesis version is far better imo.
The genesis version is absolute dog shit of a game. You are an insane person.

why do they keep jumping? 90% of the hits they take are while jumping, don't they realize it?

i think most of the john pertwees run survived, a think all of william hartnells run was lost too
+chippz lemonz
the BBC taped over them over the years.
+chippz lemonz It wasn't that they fucked up it's that around the time they start taping over them Doctor Who became an embarrassment for BBC. They were constantly trying to kill the show for good. Though I did hear they found a whole 97 of lost Doctor Who tapes in some country in Africa or something.
with watch doctor POO
chunks of shit
The "Pause Sound" of this game gives me some chills.:/
super nintendo, sega genesis when i was dead broke man i couldnt picture this
r/cringetopia
I've played the game long enough to know that in order to get past the 2nd level boss, you must kick it in the eyes, while fighting off the waves of spooks that it spits out.
Can't wait for Splatterhouse 3 review!
I love the sounds the character and the creachers make. Its more funny than creepy.
james just cant seem to keep his nintendo fanboyism in check, its rampant
I love how James watches Doctor Who, it's one of the greatest things on TV in my opinion. Basically James you just have to start at 2005 when the reboot started with "Rose." They fill people in on the past episodes that haven't seen it (like me.) Great series just fantastic and you guys are too. Keep up the good work!
One of the best games on the Genesis.
+gg gg Sonic need another?
When playing these types of games, you really have to take your time with it because if you don't, you're gonna have a bad time.
Splatterhouse 3 is so good!
"Ḩò͘o!̀͘"
"Ḩò͘o!̀͘ Ḩò͘o!̀͘"
the soundtrack to splatterhouse series in particular this game is beyond classic.
You guys need to play WAR OF THE MONSTERS
+FuckPunkers YESSSSSS!
THIS^
SO MUCH YES
+FuckPunkers That game was a classic that not very many people know about. I wish they would have made a sequel.
I remember playing that as a kid. There was a water park about an hour and a half away from my house as a kid. It had it in the arcade, it was excellent.
The main character name is Rick you found that out in the intro i love these games even the remake
Mega Drive>Super Nintendo. Blast Processing makes a world of difference. :)
lmao processing was literally all Genesis had compared to snes Genesis is inferior in many ways if you want to get technical look up the specs of both.
