Hey Gary thanks for the insightful video! As for dying natural veg tan, I started my leather career dying natural veg before eventually starting to buy pre-dyed from the tannery. My take aways from it are:
1.The labour time you put into dying and finishing the leather including wait time between coats cuts into work time a lot.
    2. Depending on what type of dyes ie. water based, alcohol and oil or finishes like roselene carnauba and tan kote you use it can be very hard to get a consistent finish.
    3. As the leather drys from the dye it can have a tendency to pull and stretch making it hard to cut out your pattern prior to dying.
    4. Getting the dye struck through and colour fast is very hard to replicate to the level of a tannery and often leather bleeds colour much worse than pre dyed leather in my own experience.
With that being said, hand dying and finishing veg tan yourself is one of the beautiful parts of leathercraft. It gives you the opportunity to create something completely unique and experiment with lots of colour variations. Anyways just my thoughts, keep the videos coming and take care!

Nice leather. I have been thinking about buying the dyed leather, but it really limits your options... Lol. It would make life easier but then I'd be stuck making everything in 1 color. I can't get my wife to buy off on 2 or 3 different color hides at any given time. I have a hard enough time coming home with stuff from tandy. I envy/appreciate your shop and am truly happy for you, that you have been able to progress as quickly in this hobby/trade as you have. I love your videos because of your honesty and humbleness even with your own mistakes. Happy Easter.

Mark Cowan you buy your leather all natural? Where and what kind? I’ve been wanting to but I find wickett & Craig natural veg tan is expensive or basically the same cost as the already finished ones. And yes thank you, I’m very blessed to have what I have but I do get a little overwhelmed knowing I have a few good tools but still can’t produce a decent product. My wife even tells me I’m to hard on myself. And yes lol I do have a hard time expressing myself on camera. When I watch it back I’m like what the heck you trying to say lol but as I get older I seem not to care as much of people think. I do delete a lot of comments. People can be mean..
      thanks for watching my friend

Well, I have only been able to buy a few smaller hides of natural veg tanned leather from my local Tandy leather. The hides that I've bought were in 2-3 oz and 4-5 or 5-6 oz. They have not been the easiest to work with but once they have been reconditioned with a little oil, they finish ok. It just takes a lot of work.

I haven't seen White die but I started leather crafting about the same time you did and I haven't advanced Beyond veg tan yet so I've been dying all of my products everything from a light brown to a black I have yet to see white dye there is white acrylic paints but that doesn't mix well with dye. As far as grey leather is concerned you can try some factories out of Italy look at Buterro it's a specific leather that's made from a specific company but if you Google buttero leather they have a wide range of colors I don't remember if gray was one of them

What veg tan you buying and where? I’m thinking about buying some natural for testing a few ideas but wickett & Craig natural is kinda expensive to practice on. Yes thanks for the tips, all definitely check out RML Fiebings offers a white and black dye but it’s acrylic so I’m guessing that wouldn’t work. Thanks again my friend

@@OneLonelyPlumber veg tan leather you can get anywhere Tandy Leather, Weaver just get your economy grade $40 for shoulder anywhere from 5 oz up to 13 then if you want some nice veg tan you get Hermann Oak tooling leather unless you can find harness or skirting from a company willing to shave that down for you to your desired weight

Horween leather you're going to need to get with a couple of fellows and buy bulk straight from a dealer or you can call the factory if you buy in bulk because everyone is out of stock on horween leather specifically Dublin
