3 YEARS ON The Mosky Golden Horse! - It's not all good news!

  • I've had the Mosky or Muslady Golden Horse pedal for 3 years and i wanted to see if it still help up as i've progressed as a guitar player and the channel has grown since then.
    It's a budget Klon replica in case you didn't know, it's a mid boost overdrive than can be used as a clean boost and you can get the Mosky Golden Horse for around $30 or £25 online, it's not all good news though as i explain in the video.
    As an amazon affiliate i receive a small commision if you buy the pedal without it costing you any extra, it helps support what i do.
    The golden horse pedal: amzn.to/3lge101
    It's still a great little guitar overdrive pedal for no money and i'd definitely buy another one!
    Thanks for watching - Derek

    Not many talk about build quality with these budget pedals, which is where companies like Wampler and JHS really shine when it comes to classic circuits. Thanks for revisiting this one 👍

    A £20 pedal that lasted 3 years. You got more than your moneys worth regardless.

    Hi Derek, I'm pleased to see a follow up report on the Golden Horse, I bought one off the back of your' first review for the princely sum of £10 used and it's become my favourite overdrive pedal at any price range and I like it so much I actually considered taking it to bed with me!. I bought it originally to use it as a booster which is how it's spent most of it's time but I've found it to be a credible low to medium drive pedal in it's own right and if, come the day, that it falls over on me as these mini pedals are expected to, I'll definitely buy another one. I don't know how it compares to a Klon from a tone point of view having never played one but I can't believe that I'm missing out. I may give the Silver Horse a go however as I quite like what I'm hearing from reviews on YT but I somehow doubt it would be any better at what it does than the Gold variant.
    Yep, all in all, Mosky hit the mark with this little beauty, I know it's a cliché but there genuinely doesn't seem to be a bad sound in it and if there was one, somebody with my lack of talent would have stumbled over it by now😄.
    Cheers Derek.

    You can adjust the EQ to your amp ,pedal,and guitar if you find muddy just tweak the tone knob just simple as that

    Lead-free soldering wire is prone to cracking, breaking soldering joints. Since it is "cheap" production line, they are probably using minimum required. Renewing soldering joints with good quality soldering wire will prevent and solve problems long term.

    My take: This pedal, along with others of its kind, fulfills a straightforward purpose. Firstly, it's an economical way to explore the characteristics of a Klon. Secondly, it has a smaller footprint on the board compared to some alternatives. Thirdly, it's generally easy to replace. If it appeals to you, then you might consider investing in a more costly, reliable option, knowing that there's an abundance of choices across all price ranges. Conversely, if it's not to your taste, you haven't invested heavily, but you've gained insight into what doesn't work for you. Is it this particular pedal, or do "klones" in general not meet your expectations?
    TL;DR: it's an extremely affordable introduction to "Klones," to the extent that if it fails or doesn't match your preferences, you're not at a significant financial loss.

    I use it as a clean boost on my main board, just to add a little top end to a slightly crunch sound. It works great. I ordered two, so I have a back up just in case. 😉 I also had a Mosky Silver Horse but probably due to a bad power supply it overheated and there was a terrible smell. Dead!!! I actually ordered two Silver Horses, but the Aliexpress website was a bit confusing, so they sent me the Golde ones. Well, I don't really mind because I wanted one of them anyway, so maybe later I'll get me another Silver Horse again.

    As much as we give in to GAS, we should also embrace GDS, (gear delete syndrome) as well. Our ear evolves, new products come out and space on the board becomes high rent territory. That pedal still has some good tones to give and since resale is nil, keep it if you can sort out the issues. Cheers!

    Im a gigging musician in the States and this little pedal is fantastic for the price. My advice is, concentrate more on your playing than your tone. 90% of the tone is in your fingers and attitude. Not your gear. I have 4 pedal boards i jam with depending on the situation. All with mixed pedals. JHS, Wampler, Boss, MXR, Behringer, DOD, Vox, DunlopDonner... they all have their place in the chain.

    • @lonpollard902
      @lonpollard902 11 місяців тому

      90%. Hmm. You'd think no amps, pedals, or guitars would ever have tone controls. No need for different tubes, speakers, pickups, or anything else. Maybe not even a guitar. Manufacturers should just have a plug for the guitarist to hold onto, with their fingers. Since scientifically measured, the specific amount of tone in the fingers is 90%.
      Of course how you play the instrument will affect how notes get enunciated. There's different timings. Where emphasis is placed. Factors such as vibrato. The way one picks the notes, and where in regard to distance from bridge. Phrasing will vary from one to the next. While those might affect tone, they aren't tone itself.
      Some have written that Clapton has the same tone with a strat as with a Gibson. No, he doesn't. He has his own way of playing things, and that comes through regardless of guitar. But the tone isn't the same.
      I once read someone claiming that EVH would have the same tone on any guitar or amp. I have a Carvin guitar from around 1980, constructed of maple, with an ebony fretboard, and brass nut. The tone is horrific. The construction of the guitar is very good. But that guitar caused me an allergy to maple. I go to great lengths to avoid maple, associating the shrill of that guitar, in my mind, with maple. When I read that comment, I thought: I'd love to see him play that guitar, through a shrill amp, and then show us how he gets the same *tone* as with his regular setup.
      90% of the time I can't stand Eric Clapton's tone when he's using a strat. But with his Gibsons, back in the days of Bluesbreakers and Cream, often he got awesome tone.
      But independent of guitar, he always plays like Eric Clapton. Not the same tone. Just his particular style of playing comes through.
      With voices, there are different inflections, rhythms, and so much more, that make our voice our own. No matter what microphone, tone control settings, amps, or anything else. The tone with setup might range bordering on angelic, to horrendous. And yet you can tell whose voice it is. Even over telephone lines, which have a frequency range of approximately 300hz to 3500hz. Try pumping music through that and see how the tone is.
      At least the claim is better than the oft seen claim that tone is 100% in the fingers/hands. It's interesting how top players are so often highly concerned with the tone of their equipment. And the frustration of tube amps not having consistent tone. Simple variations in line voltage can throw it off. And with fuzz pedals, something as simple as variation in temperature.

    • @khudson4901
      @khudson4901 8 місяців тому +2

      In simple terms, learn to play your instrument well. The pedals can enhance your facility or hide it. I've seen people on stage struggling to finger a power chord at the gig. I get it.

    • @jchabo82
      @jchabo82 6 місяців тому +1

      Wow, that's quite the comment above. I think the simplest way to convey the point of "it's all in your hands" is:
      A great player will sound great on great gear, a sh!tty player will still sound sh!tty on great gear.
      Gear helps but it won't solve your problems. In some cases it will actually amplify them.

    Ty for sharing. I've been using the pedal for about 3 years now, and I recently had connections issues with my golden horse lady. That happened about 3 times in a month. It would randomly lose connection during a show and practice, of course. Switched that pedal out.

    Bought the Silver Horse a few months back which has both it's own sound AND the Golden horse as well. They've since fixed the weak circuitry and it sounds as good as the pedals 3-4x it's price. For the money to me it's still got the best tone available AND it's consistently good! It's nice and warm exactly when you need it to be. In the rare chance it ever goes bad? I WILL buy another one!
