In loving memory of Estelle Getty.
Estelle Getty (July 25, 1923 - July 22, 2008) was an American actress and comedienne, who appeared in film, television, and theatre. She was best known for her role as Sophia Petrillo on The Golden Girls from 1985 to 1992, which won her an Emmy and a Golden Globe, on The Golden Palace from 1992 to 1993, and on Empty Nest from 1993 to 1995. In her later years, after retiring from acting, she battled Lewy body dementia.
At 23:03, it is mentioned that Estelle lost her nephew to AIDS and his picture is shown but his name is not given. He was Steven Scher, the adopted son of her brother David, who died on January 22, 1992. Steve and I were best friends in high school and spent the next 11 years living together, working jobs, and doing theatre in parts of Upstate NY and finally Greensboro, NC. He was my dearest, closest friend. I married and moved to SC in February 1990 (Steve was a groomsman in my wedding) and he called me a few months later to tell me he had contracted AIDS. I was devastated. I was able to visit him a couple of times in Greensboro, the last time I saw him being in October of 1991. Soon after, he called to tell me that his Aunt Estelle, whom he idolized and adored, was going to fly him out to California and put him in hospice care, which she did. Estelle made sure he had the best of care and comfort until he died. She called me about a week after his death to ask if I had any photos of him looking handsome and healthy before AIDS had ravaged him. She wanted them to blow up for display at a memorial and AIDS fund-raiser she was holding in Steve's honor. I sent her several photos --and I was so glad she called because it gave me the opportunity to personally thank her for the generous kindness she gave to my dearest friend. I will never forget Estelle Getty - the woman and aunt - for doing such a wonderful thing for him.
So awesome. Thanks for sharing. Jacqueline.
Very cool! Thank you for sharing this! Love it!
Omgosh what a cutie!!
I'm sorry you lost him.
how lovely
Beautiful
The Golden Girls is the only show I can watch over and over again and never get tired of reruns!
right !? me too !
Same here I may be 31 but I never get tired of watching the Golden girls use to watch it with my grandmother we use to laugh but she passed away when I was 13
Yes!!!! Lol. The only thing I watch on hulu over and over lol
Its 646 am and I just climbed in bed from being in the living room watching Golden girls. Its on until 6pm today
Thank goodness I’m not alone with this. I’m watching it right now. I love this show.
Golden Girls is the only show where I can never really pin down who my favorite character is. They are all such great characters on their own and they work so well together. That's gotta be unique.
Ascent ikr each character was hilarious in their own way
Yup they all have things so special about them!
Ascent 06$40
I agree
Facts
She left her mark on this earth forever as the sassy elderly Sophia. She is missed, and Golden Girls is still a good show tell this day.
R.I.P., Estelle, Bea, and Rue.

I will be so relieved when I join them. It's sad when dying is so difficult and tedious and some of us have to suffer for so long until we can go home.
Yes
I bet Betty gets lonely thinking about them :(
Them bitches were the coolest
@@Catherine-xf3pc My grandmother used to say "has God forgotten about me" after almost all of her friends had passed on.
Picture it: 2019 we miss the Golden Girls... 😟
Love her sooo much so cute little lady
It's hard to believe that Betty is the only one still alive. Time goes by to fast 🙁
Damn right we miss them😭😭😭
Picture of 2020.... we still missed the golden girls
Lol! Sicily 1922
The golden girls is immortal, a pure legend!
+Fun Size same
Friedri
Well all of them are dead except for Betty sooo
Jordan Hubbard 1.0 the comment said “the Golden Girls IS” referring to the SHOW. Had they said “The Golden Girls ARE” then your comment would be valid and relevant (because then they’d be referring to them as individuals).
TC MUSIC hey bitch let me comment I was just saying asshole
What? She thought that she wasn't pretty so she decided to be funny? Mrs Getty was a beautiful woman even in her golden years she was still a beauty.
She really was!
She was stunning! Beautiful face!
she was both
To this day I watch reruns on any station showing them.. though I know them by heart, still brings me joy! What other sitcom has done that? Bless them all!
Yeah, her son is gorgeous too! Great looking genes
Picture it, Sicily 1932
LOL!!
Funny!
😂😂😂
You just knew..... it was gonna be good.
I love the way she would say that!
Judge Judy always reminds me of Estelle Getty and her character Sofia. They have the same attitude, sassiness, and spunk.
faznout except Judy lacks a heart.
paxsmile That lack of heart earns her $47 million a year to do the show "Judge Judy". I think she's doing fine
faznout---They looked and sounded eerily alike. In her healthier days, Estelle moved and talked much faster, similarly to Judge Judy. If you've ever watched Estelle's cameo role in Mannequin, you'll see this. ...Both very well dressed women too.
paxsmile---Judy's is definitely a RUDE BITCH...albeit a competent and well paid one. Estelle seemed much kinder.
faznout they are both new york Jews
RIP BEA, BETTY, ESTELLE, & RUE 🕊✨
Forever in our hearts. Thank you for the memories. I hope you all feel our love wherever you are ♥️
All will forever put smiles on many others faces and bring so much laughter. 💙
RIP
I liked it when Estelle and Bea played Sonny and Cher on the Golden Girls.
Yes!! 🎤🎶🎵🎼I got you babe🎼🎵🎶🎤
Me too
That was a real hoot!!!
One of my favorite scenes of the show!
So they weren’t supposed to be Cheech and Chong?
Estelle Getty MADE The Golden Girls! Absolutely one of the best sitcoms EVER
All are Incredible. Hard to split favourites. But understandable.
Marriage and the Single Lady! Very true
As Betty said, they were like a table and a table needs four legs to work
So glad Golden Girls is on Hulu now!
Megan Carter me too watching now and paused to watch this on my iPad!
I watch it over and over again, can never get enough 😁 will forever love the golden girls. Hope Hulu never takes it down.
Your Subconscious just got Hulu so watching them all now.
I wish we had hulu in germany 😭 seems so much better than netflix and amazon prime but we just have these two beside of maxdome and sky which is also a video on demand service
Same! I just recently found The Golden Palace here on youtube too!
In 1974, I was 17 years old and an apprentice at a Summer Stock theatre, upstate NY and Estelle was hired to play the mother in Plaza Suite. I was cast as the groom who is gonna marry her daughter. Estelle was hilarious in the role and was a sweetheart backstage and through the entire rehearsal process and run of the show. She got rave reviews for the part. When we both headed back to the city we stayed and touch and became friends. Then she got the part in torch song and when I went to see her I was blown away. Best thing in that show. We went out after the show and I was so happy she made it to broadway. So proud of her. Loved Estelle. An amazing lady. And soooooo funny onstage and offstage. Years later when golden girls happened it was surreal but I was again so proud. RIP, Estelle.
Really? How cool!!!
Mju5uj
That's so awesome! Thanks for sharing your story.
I STARTED WAYCHING THE GOLDEN GIRLS WITH MY GRANDMOTHER THE DAY IT STARTED, AND SHE PASSED IN CHRISTMAS OF 94. TO THIS DAY I STILL WATCH THE RERUNS EVERYDAY... MISS THOSE LADIES SO MUCH 😇😇😇😇
Me tooo watched it with my grandmother as a kid and she passed 9 months ago. I still watch GG every night before going to bed.
I had basically only knew of Estelle as Sophia in Golden Girls. I had no
idea how connected she was to the LGBT community. God bless her for her
love for LGBT people and her fight against HIV/AIDS. May she rest in
peace and always be loved and remembered for the great little lady she
was.
@ Zinnie: I so agree. Wonderful woman.
What's really incredible : Rue McClanahan, Betty White, and Beatrice Arthur were ALL LGBT allies. Just an absolutely lovely group of ladies!
Jenna Leigh's Beauty Slam Yes! They were pro people basically! I heard Bea made a place for gay teenagers who were kicked out by her parents. And I watched Betty reunite with the black man she fought to have on her show. Making him the first black man on tv. 🥰
@@CudiZone34 you said it best! They were, and Betty IS, pro people. They really were miles ahead of their time.
There was actually a golden girls episode that was centered on LGBTQ. I believe if I remember right, Dorothy's friend comes over who is lesbian and she is afraid what the roommates would think.
There will NEVER be another show as good as the golden girls ever!!!
Wanna bet? Grace and Frankie beat them.
@@rhodamackenzie8120Good Show yes but not The Golden Girls.
#ABSOLUTETRUTH!!
What an amazing, beautiful human being she was.
she was funny sassy spunky on golden girls

People could learn from Estelle's story... Never give up on your dreams. Just because it hasn't happened yet doesn't mean it won't ever happen.
I was thinking that too. Such an inspiration for sure!! She did it all!! Such a Powerhouse! Jacqueline.
Actually she has said it's not usually too smart to get into acting in general bc of how hard it is to make it- especially at a later age, but that she somehow made it and was very lucky and grateful.
That's called survivorship bias.
Betty White has now joined the other 3 ladies in Paradise. RIP Golden Ladies.❤❤❤❤
My brother in law Fernando died of Aids. It was a sadness and a heartache I will never forget.
He was a wonderful person. Rest in peace. I miss you so much.
My favorite line from her ; to Blanche was Human Mattress.
Her son Barry very handsome.
2021 and I still watch this show every night before I go to sleep, episode after episode, and never get tired of watching them over and over again. never will ever get tired of watching these 4 women who make me cry with different emotions. Estelle reminds me of my mother in so many ways, especially one who speaks whats on her mind
Same her, October 14, 2021, just wrapped up the 7th season, I’ll take a break and start over soon. So fantastic!
It's a good way to go to sleep ✌️
Wish it didn’t end after 7 seasons, I also liked the spin off but they cancelled that too such a shame
Me tooo I thought I was the only one that watch it everyday night bedtime go to sleep. When I was a kid I used to watch GG every Saturday with my grandmother. I loss my grandmother 9 months ago and it gives me joy and reminds me of the great memes I shared with my grandmother.
@@deepblack2193 yes Golden Palace was only one season, i read that they were strongly in preparation to renew but at the last minute they decided to cancel the show.
I love Estelle Getty! What a legend 💜. May she Rest in Peace 🌷

What beautiful thing to Estelle Getty
Miss Getty kept me laughing when there was very little in my life to be happy about. Thank you special lady,...thank you.
I can relate with you on that Natalia!! Thank you Mrs. Getty!!
When we say "gone too soon", that most definitely is fitting for Estelle Getty. What a lovely, beautiful, incredibly talented lady. Just wow. I could not say enough wonderful things about her. Truly blessed we were to have her.
We do say gone too soon and it’s true. Yet the lady lived from 23-08... so she did live a good life
@@tornadicdoge627 she wasn’t young when she passed but somehow seems too young..
I adored Estelle 's character as a child on golden girls. Still do. The 1st memory of golden girls is "Picture it Sicily....".
Or...(rose) "n st olaf" lolol
Estelle did more in one life than most people could do in ten, she is a true legend. I only thought I loved her before I watched this piece on her amazing life.
There's only one Golden Girl left...Sweet old Betty White..I love them all. They will never be forgotten
Rip ❤️
Thats is no longer the case sadly . May the memory of all the Golden Girls ever be honoured
Sadly Not Anymore
And here it is in 2020 and in 2021 she still bringing people to laughter and joy in the middle of a worldwide pandemic. Who would’ve thought that would be the case. Thank you so much Estelle thank you thank you thank you
Hello beautiful lady how are you doing
@@philipdonald7092 try again!
She likes cheesecake :)
40 years old and I'm binge-watching Golden Girls right now!!!
I'm two years ahead of you at 42 years old and I also still watch The Golden Girls episodes most nights before sleeping! I love em x
Lewy body dementia; is what took this wonderful ladies life way to early. I’m so grateful to have had her on TV and still watch after all these years
It's hard to believe that she's been gone 10 years. What a beautiful lady
As a straight male, gosh I loved this show. It was a show for everyone. Estelle is missed dearly.
Estelle you changed my life. I watched you my whole life as Sophia. We miss you everyday! You will forever be in our hearts. Thank you for the laughs! Much love❤️
Just finished watching, and am in tears. God, I miss her, and Bea, and Rue. And thank you for reaching out to gay people at a time when we were so reviled. Thank you for being a friend.
The theme tune - "Thank you for being a friend" has more meaning to it now.
now, let's include Betty too.
I like golden palace too was good why they cancel everything good?
i loved the golden girls. i still watch the episodes via computer daily. my day doesn't start until i wake up brush my teeth and watch at least one episode.
I fall asleep watching them every night.
Looking around - 😂😂😂
Omg 💯🎉
I can't. I'm crying. I grew up with Golden Girls w my grandma when I came home from school and she'd make me cheese and apples for lunch xD I still rewatch episodes now being 22. I love the Golden girls and my grandma. So many memories. Wish I could have met all of them.
Vanessa Joyner I have the same story. I watched with my grandma too ❤️ so many memories
Same. My gram and I loved the Golden Girls and us watching it together was and still is one of my favorite memories. ❤️
Vanessa Joyner same here
I used to watch it with my grandparents too. I always wanted to meet them as well. They really made you feel like you're part of them and would be welcome in that house. I still watch it all the time now. My all time favorite show.
Me too!!! I was born in 87 but some of my earliest memories are watching it with my Memaw. So comforting 💖💖💖
I feel happy and sad watching this.
I can't stand Rosie O'Donnell either. Has no talent whatsoever.
Me too. This show is just so awesome

Knowing how much she did for hiv/aids and for the LGBT community. Just made me love her even more if that's possible. Not only was she an amazing actress she was an amazing human being. There will never be another amazing soul like her in this world.
R.I.P Beautiful Angel 😊
Currently binge watching Golden Girls
Same here, October 14, 2021, just wrapped up the 7th season, I’ll take a break and start over soon. So fantastic!
I love this show. I am a 34 y/o Native American male lol
Sophia was definitely my favorite and Estelle played it beautifully.
What a pretty lady she was!
Myself and my 10 year old grab snacks and we binge watch The Golden Girls and crack up laughing and I tell her this show has been out for over 30 years
I still watch at least 5-6 reruns each week...I never will get tired of the humor that she brought to the show 😂😂💕
I do have a special place in my heart for Estelle as Sophia. I had a small gray haired supply teacher that looked the double of Sophia, when I was only 4 years old, I was terrified of thunder and one day there was a huge thunderstorm, I screamed in fear and started to cry and this angel who looked like Estelle held me and soothed me for a whole hour. She will be long gone now, but I’ll always remember her when I watch Golden Girls….
Hard to believe she was younger than Bea and played that character so well. I love Sophia so much. Just started watching Golden girls on hulu...at 36. A latecomer but so worth the wait
What an amazing person. She is a legend not only for her acting abilities, but also for her humanitarian side. I find it amazing that a woman who had a whole other "normal" life (marriage, children, a day job as a Secretary!) could strike gold years after most actresses do. It is a tragedy what happened to her, but it was nice to see that in 2000, she still had her wit about her. When I found out she passed away, I was devistated, as I was when Bea Arthur and Rue McClanahan died after her.
What a great show! As I sit here typing my comment, I am also watching on TV "The Golden Girls". My mother used to watch the show, and she'd laugh her ass off. Now I watch them all the time. Now I can see why she'd laughed so much, because I am a Golden Girl. Rest in Peace, Estelle, (Sophia). You brought so much joy in your part as "Sophia Petrilla".
What a wonderful woman , who did so much to help those with AIDS. The Golden Girls is still one of my favorite shows! They don't make comedies like this anymore. God Bless All Of These Wonderful Ladies. ❤🙏
Rest in peace Estelle and all the Golden Girls and Valerie Harper.
I've been binging on Golden Girls during all this COVID quarantining, and enjoying it immensely. I wish they were all still alive for a reunion, but I hope to see them all in Heaven someday.
still watch golden girls today
ME TK SWEETIE ME TO NO REALITY TV FOR ME☺
God bless you, Sophia (Estelle)! You will always be an amazing memory of laughter. I'm so glad you came into our lives. xxx from Auckland, New Zealand xxx
Estelle Getty was one of a kind, and a very special part of my life (as well as the rest of the Golden Girls. Love her and love them!
Hello Pamela how are you doing today?
Estelle is a blessing to this generation she is fun to be with....do you like the show?
What a lovely soul. I can tell you I have come home from work many a nights, got in my jammies, got a glass of Chardonnay and turned on the Golden Girls just to forget about the stress of the day. She may be gone physically, but she is with us every day as the feisty, foul mouthed Sophia. And I love her for it. Picture it 2019, and people are still watching the little old woman from Sicily. We love you, Estelle.
I LOVED The Golden Palace. Well written, witty, hilarious.
Back when Lifetime Channel was good.
Valencia Johnson ---This is true.

Idk that revent Clark sisters movie was the bomb
I no what happened?! So sad!! Remember when they used to have moment of truth movies
Valencia Johnson Facts!! I thought is was just me.
I just bought my 10 year old niece a “Sophia” Funko pop because she loves her. Estelle is still making many generations laugh through the Golden Girls reruns. Estelle passed the year before my niece was even born.
Hello Maybelline how are you doing today?
Estelle is such an amazing and fun person i like her personality....do you like her personality?
I still miss her so much. It's crazy how many years have passed.. we love you!! 💜
Watching Golden Girls is like being part of the family, they make you cry and then laugh just like being home again.
We will always love you Sophia❤❤ I'm 23 and still find time 2 watch the golden girls. That's one show I will always find time 2 watch on whatever channel they show it on.
I loved Estelle she was an amazing actress.
Yeah
She made my night tears of joy... Loved Sophia
I don't know how many times I've come back here to watch this in its entirety. Gosh Estelle was such an amazing woman. We miss you dearly. Thank you for the love and the laughter, Estelle 💙
Estelle Getty was one of the darned funniest actresses ever to grace television. Sophia Petrillo was and always will be one of the funniest character portrayed on television.
I saw her in person on Broadway in Torch Song & she was amazing.
+Curt Bonnell What a treat.
Estelle was amazing and I am glade she never gave up her dream
+sparrow Helm - so seems she got the parkinsons disease the doctors did advise them meds would hurt them memory then that led her to have alstimers..god how devastating for her. she was such a wonderful lady..well now she an angel in heaven may she rest in peace. sad to see her go like that.
It was actually Lewy Body Dementia, it mimics Parkinson's in many ways.
Glad
This was a brilliant show and still is. These actresses acted to absolute perfection. They don't even produce them like this anymore and no matter how often you see it, the episodes never get old. My mother loved this show so much, especially
Estelle Getty's character Sophia.
It’s 2021 and I STILL watch GG
Wonderful Woman Estelle Getty. RIP.
To this day at 43 GOLDEN GIRLS is still a happy place. Thank you, DVR
Hulu 2🤗
HOUSERAM RAM I’m the same age and I adored that show. I bought all of the seasons on iTunes.
Top, bottom or vers?
This is a wonderful tribute to an amazing actress who touched so many. Her work with Aids patients and the much needed education surrounding that disease will never go without credit. This has touched my heart; thanks Maw!
thats exactly it: the golden girls made me forget about about worries and negative things each time i saw them
My absolute favorite Golden Girl - she had the best lines!
Hello mISSJHON how are you doing today?
Thank you, Estelle, Bea and Rue for the laughter we shared with each of you. Your the best. Rest in peace🙏🏻
I still watch the GOLDEN GIRLS I love them & enjoy them so much !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
thank you for being a friend
Estelle seemed like such an angel, I wish I could've met her. When I first saw The Golden Girls and looked up her bio, I was like there's no way that woman looked like that when she was in her 60s. I had no idea she was made up to look like she was in her 80s. lol. I personally think Estelle was the real star of The Golden Girls. I saw Mask once, years ago. Never saw Torch Song Trilogy but I've heard of it.
What about stop or my mom will shoot?
well Betty was the oldest of the 4 in real life.
I watch golden girls all the time
Estelle was a Leo and it showed.
I'm so glad I saw this video. I loved that show so much! I have tears in my eyes now.
Thank you Sophie. Dearest Estelle you are the best.
Loved Estelle, she was so joyful and so talented. Loved knowing she worked hard for people believed in.😊. Her sons show so much love respect for her.
In the golden girls, I adore all four. Each character had a special meaning, and each had a mind of their own. They help me perfection my English dialogue. I will always love and respect the golden girls.
I miss her and rest in peace . Great human as she was .
Her husband was a good man. He should be honored for keeping her family together so she could follow her dream and her passion.
I feel bad for him. I hope in her last years she spent them work him.
Francesca Women go unhonoured for doing that for their husbands all the time. So?
Mary RNBSN Sorry?
@Joshua Swain I don't deny my anger at these millennia of BS
@@mckavitt13 Nah only women like you are unhonoured (go figure why?). Women like Estelle will always be revered till the end of time.
You can see it occasionally in The Golden Girls but my goodness, Estelle's full, open smile was just absolutely radiant. It lit up her entire face.
So glad Lifetime Intimate Portrait series was able to do shows on all four of the ladies of the Golden Girls before they began to pass.
Amazing story. I still watch the Golden Girls. November 2019. Her oldest son looks exactly like his father. She lived a beautiful life. I miss you Estelle Getty, "AKA, Sohia Petrillo. Now I also watch Golden Girls on UA-cam. Thanks for Uploading these episodes. R.I.P Estelle.
I am sorry for your loss. May God bless you and your family with angel wings. Fly high beautiful person with the angels.
Estelle reminds me of Judge Judy in this documentary.
Would have been wonderful to see Estelle and Judge Judy in a skit as twin sister judges. ;-) .
She has always reminded me of Judge Judy, especially in the retrospective episodes of The Golden Girls, when she portrayed Sophia during her younger days. Their movements, gestures, and voice inflections were remarkably similar.
@@philiptonee6334 that would've been cool to see lmaoooo
And Judge Judy is shorter than she appears, as well. They probably wouldn’t be that far off.
She reminds me of Nancy Pelosi.
This was THE Show my mother and I would always watch together back home in Brooklyn, NY even when I visited years later with my children...I was 25 when Golden Girls first aired. My mother and I adored all the ladies and being Sicilian, my mother and I found Estelle's portrait of an older Sicilian woman (Oh my gosh my Italian aunts!) so genuine and convincing...Still today I can never get enough of these grand and lovely women, each wonderful and unique in their own right and together the perfect family. Still to this day I always search for the reruns...A marathon would be heaven to me!
Her bone structure... Looking at her in these, she reminds me a lot of my grandmother. Hurts my heart all over again. 😢
Estelle Getty 4ever!!!!❤❤❤😘
Mrs. Gettleman, “Sophia” was wonderful! I still spend my evenings with the Golden Girls. So many memories and laughs. My young nephew called them “The Mimi’s” and was so excited when they came on the television. He loved the show and I do too. I began calling them “The Mimi’s”. I love them too! 😀😀😀😀😀
So sad that we not only lost Estelle, Bea and Rue, but now Valerie too. Heaven must be full of laughter with the ever growing cast of characters.
She was so damn good as Sophia. Quick witted, caustic, but still somehow warm and maternal. Crazy to think the the woman who played that character suffered from stage fright.
I wish sometimes I could pack my bags and buy a ticket to go back to that time. This not only makes me smile a walk back into the past, but it fills my heart with longing. A time for television with so many iconic shows and theme songs. TV shows that came apart of a nightly ritual. Street lights came on, I'd head home, and settle in to watch Golden Girls or whatever other show was on..TGIF then head off to bed.
What a beautiful time to grow up.
Lovely words… I wish I could head back there too if only just for a day. I’d see all my family who are now long gone and tell them how much I love them. This show gives me so much joy and comfort.
My ringtone is the Golden Girls theme song. Estelle is really beautiful and so admirable.
