32:25 Betty white mouths “bless you” to a sneezing audience member and I just think that is the sweetest thing ever…
God, Betty White had the BEST comedic timing, even when she wasn't performing a role.
2 years later, her death still really stings. I miss her. I miss all these ladies.
Betty White is sharp AF. Whenever there was an awkward silence she'd come in with a witty zinger and change the energy of the room. She seems like the alpha of the group
I agree. She's such an astute comedian.
Really? Seems annoying to me, she kept picking on Rue and just seemed like she wanted attention. Just my opinion and everyone can disagree
@@metalmonkey6262 I liked Rue coming out fine despite Betty's cutting in.. She knew her way around these kind of things 👏🏻😍.. 🌿
Rue and Betty really loved each other enough of the using banter as anything else
Betty was bright and extrovert while Bea was reserved, shy and introverted.
These 4 women Bea, Estelle, Betty, and Rue was simply the best actresses of their time. I love the Golden Girls and even the later spinoff featuring everyone except Bea as Dorothy, the Golden Palace. They hold a special place in my heart. RIP Girls you are Legends.❤
So marvelous! To my knowledge the only Q&A where all 4 golden girls are present together I think?! So cool!
This was rare. I miss these gals. We were blessed to watch their storied careers. Can't duplicate this magic in a bottle. R.I.P. Thank you for the laughs.
I've always gravitated towards Bea Arthur (Dorothy), because of her personality, I also have that same relationship with my mom lol. Rest in Heaven Ladies
You really see the genuine affection Bea and Estelle had for each other. Even though they were practically the same age I believe they really had a mother/daughter dynamic to their real life relationship. Remember Bea lost her own mother at the start of the series. Maybe Estelle playing her character's mother on the show filled a void in Bea’s grieving heart and she transferred some feelings to Estelle. Just guessing.
Bea seemed very sad after her husband left her and then her mom died. She looked so sad sometimes even behind her funny exterior and her ability to make people laugh.
@@desertrose1226 she was an introvert and she hated the mean jokes of Dorothy. That got to her, and it was said real reason why she left and cried over those remarks.
Works for me!
Betty White lost her mother right around the same time.
Brilliant. It is sad that three of the four girls have passed on now. RIP.
Betty is so quick! Thanks for sharing this! Rue and Betty really DO seem to be the more extroverted.
I see Barbara Thorndyke and the ghost of Frieda Claxton gave this two thumbs down... Well, I am stunned! Just stunned! Stunned is the only way to describe how... stunned I am!
Did you have a problem with my book, dear?
Yes, as a matter of fact I did, all those waves! Big waves, little waves, dark waves, rollin' in! Page after page! I had to take a Dramamine to get through chapter three!
Wait are you trying to tell us that you’re...stunned?!
Now it has 3 thumbs down...Maybe Mr. Terrific didn't think this was terrific because he wasn't mentioned?
@@DBradshaw25 Maybe it was Rose's coworker who hated her!
Thank you so much for sharing this!!! 30+ yrs later and is still one of the best shows ever!!!
It was absolutely timeless!!!!!!!!!!
Sweet lovely ladies. I ♥️ Estelle! Such a gentle woman and soft spoken. I love Betty & Rue, and I love how tactile and warm Bea was.
Well said!!
It was magic put together. The writing & them. 4 awesome ladies the likes of which we won’t see again. I miss those days. ❤
I love that golden girls all have their purses, made them so human and relatable for some reason…
I love that they asked about Young Dorothy. I always thought that actress was wonderful.
She really looked like younger Dorothy XDDDD!!!!
Q
She should have played Dorothy’s daughter Kate since she resembled Beatrice.
Her mannerisms are the exact same.. she was a wonderful actress.
@@SheniceSays214 yes she did. I also think Carol (Adrienne Barbeau) was a good pick as Maude’s daughter on ‘Maude’.
Around the 28:00 mark, the man asking the question is Marc Cherry, who would soon go on to be a writer on Golden Girls, and would later create Desperate Housewives.
How do u know this?
Marc Cherry was on the Golden Girls panel at Paley in 2006 and actually said that it was him
I literally recognized his voice. And he asked more questions later too.
I recognized him by his voice. Thanks for confirming it
Estelle Getty sounded just like Sophia at 37:00 she was amazing.
The comment at about 53:00 about topicality hurting the show in syndication really struck me. In 1989 syndication was where a show really made it's money, and they had no idea that we would one day have the luxury of streaming the entire series in a sitting if we wanted to (I usually put GG on at bedtime - thanks, HULU!)
Bea Arthur just revealing exactly how and why the show went down the way it did at 1:00:15
When I heard that I was completely stunned. I love Golden Palace however.
This footage is amazing! Thank you so much for sharing. If now only the bloopers and outtakes would surface. That would be awesome.
Here you go 😀 ua-cam.com/video/LQlWvQvijbk/v-deo.html
It’s funny how Bea jokingly said that if Dorothy wasn’t there the whole thing would go to hell.
She wasn’t a part of Golden Palace and it actually did go to hell.
the worst thing about golden palace was the theme song. despite the identical lyrics, the music was fingernails on a blackboard.
Golden Palace wasn't that bad imo
Golden Palace is a fun watch in 2024!
Thanks for posting this 😊.
A strong and standing ovation for everyone on the stage, for the rest of the writers, and for the whole GG crew.. My love and appreciation for them all 💚💙💛.. 💜🌿
The writers, who were not present because they were writing, are the unsung heroes of this show.
I love The Golden Girls,I love Bea Arthur, Betty White,Rue McClanahan and Estelle Getty, such smart, talented and beautiful ladies 🤗❤️🙏✌️😎
Wow, this happened 4 days before I was born. Love them all!!
Brought tears when Estelle mentioned enjoying working on the episode where she befriended a man with Alzheimer's, when eventually she was tortured with that horrible disease.
Bea and Estelle died the worst deaths I think. Poor beautiful Estelle- dementia is absolutely awful 😔 - and Bea died from a horrible cancer…
not quite, lewy bodies is different than Alzheimer's. that's what Estelle & Robin Williams had. I'm not sure which of those 2 illnesses Joe Biden has, we'll find out eventually.
@@desertrose1226 I wonder if the episode where Dorothy started smoking again was an attempt to try to get bea Arthur to stop smoking.
Thanks for uploading. Betty White is really switched on. The show really has a broad and enduring appeal. I liked the question near the end, about the topical references, as I often have to look up the people mentioned in these now.
43 Minutes in a audience member askes if they would in the future ask Lucille Ball to guest star as, she said Golden girls was her favourite show. Unfortunately Lucille Ball would pass away just over a month later age 77.
I absolutely Love The Golden Girls and watch them on UA-cam now all the time. I wish that I could have met these Beautiful and Talented Ladies. My favorite show of all times. Thank You so Much for this video ♥️♥️♥️♥️
Thanks for sharing this precious clip!
I love that they’re all carrying purses.
Me too 😆 oh and you are cuuute
i remember in an interview rue mentioned that estelle started to show difficulty memorizing her lines during the last 4 seasons. i can only imagine how she and they all dealt with it especially the 3 GG helping her.
Wow! What a gem this is. Love seeing the recognition this amazing show so deserved. Are there any more clips like this? Thank you from a very grateful UK fan 😃
I don't know how to put the 'link' here but if you search "The Golden Girls at PaleyFest LA 2006: Full Conversation".. It's another great Q&A session 😍.. 💜🌿
Thank you so much for posting this!
34:18 Best question ever! Layers and layers of clothing, boots and longs skirts in 112 degree weather is not very Floridian!
Dorothy seemed slightly irritated by that question! Lol
Now that’s an event I would have loved to attend! Nice to see it!
Wonderful explanations and insights.
THANK YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What a treat! Thank You! Would love to know what 2 episodes they watched?
I get the faint impression that Rue and Betty form one camp, and Bea and Estelle another. just a hunch.
You’re right. Bea adored Estelle, who was in awe of Bea. While Rue and Bea starred in Maude together for six seasons and Betty and Rue only worked together on Momma’s Family for two years, Betty and Rue were very similar in temperament and played word association games behind the scenes. They were able to memorize the script early and had fun during rehearsals. Bea and Estelle (especially) were more nervous and formal in their approach, coming from the stage whereas Betty and Bea were from television. Also, Betty’s quick wit and positive personality sometimes grated on the eccentric Bea’s nerves, who was rather shy and sensitive, as well as smart as a whip.
@@jimhaggard7436 You have hit the nail on the head 🙂
There is most definitely tension between them. I can feel it as each responds to question. Thats what makes them such great actresses, when the cameras rolling nobody can assume they are nothing less than best friends.
Thank you so much for sharing this, it means a lot! You wouldn't know which two episodes they were talking about, would you? I think one of them must be the one with Dorothy's gay friend, cause that's what they kept mentioning later on as one of their favorites. Lots of love from Germany
@Marc Matta-Awad Thank you so much Marc!
One of the episodes featured Lois Nettleton as Dorothy's Lesbian friend as Betty White throws praise to Lois for being the classy actress in handling a delicate topic such as homosexuality.
Interesting that when Betty answers the question about the amazing chemistry between the four at 52:00, and that it was a surprise that they also became so close personally, Bea nods in agreement and comments how rare it is for a cast where there’s no weak link. So much for the rumour that Bea didn’t care for Betty because unlike Rue and Estelle, Betty wasn’t a theatre trained actress. That certainly does not seem to be the case here. In any event, this was wonderful to see, yet also bittersweet now that all of the women have passed.
Betty White herself said Bea wasn't fond of her.
too bad audience questions were hard to hear
@1:00:15 Ha ha Bea Arthur practically IS Dorothy or the other way around 😂
Foreshadowing golden palace flop lol
Looking around ??
Its too bad you can't hear the audience questions clearly.
I've just come across this on Instagram and IMMEDIATELY came here to find it!
Wow. This is great. Bea never did those kinds of things.
Absolute perfection all on one stage!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!😇😇😇😇😈😈😈😈🤟🤟🤟🤟👵👵👵👵🔥🔥🔥🔥🎊🎊🎊🎊🥀🌷🌻🌸
Does anyone know what two episodes they screened? Rue said they were her favorites and I just wondered what they were.
@Ryan V. Thanks. I heard Betty's comment after I posted (of course!) but wasn't sure about the other one. It makes sense that it was the pilot.
Sad and crazy to think in only 20 years after this was taken only one would be left living!
I had read that Selma Diamond and Doris Roberts did a comedy sketch called "Miami Nice" in 1984 that was the original inspiration for the Golden Girls show. I've been trying to find that clip on the internet with no success. I'm a huge Selma Diamond fan and still watch old reruns of Season 1 and Season 2 of Night Court just to see Selma. I know that she died just four months before Golden Girls went on air in 1985. I have to wonder if she was ever considered to be a part of the show before she passed? I am a huge Golden Girls fan so I was just curious?
You read correctly. The TV Academy has been interviewing actors, directors, writers and producers for about 20 years and has uploaded them to this site:
interviews.televisionacademy.com
Scroll down to Go To All Interviews and you will find hundreds of them. Tony Thomas, a producer was interviewed. Maybe he spoke about it. All of the GG women were interviewed except for Estelle Getty. You can also search by show. Anyone who has mentioned The Golden Girls will be listed here. Enjoy!
They did that ‘bit’ at an awards show, which is here on UA-cam somewhere as I’ve seen it.
@@TheMisterMarilyn Thank you so very much darling Marilyn! I'm still haven't been able to find it. By the way, I am so in love with your song "Just Be". It's such a beautiful song.
@@CandyAppleBlue I just tried looking for it myself... I have a feeling that it was included in a documentary about the golden girls and they showed those two actresses giving an award, but they did the little skit about Miami Vice, and one of them kept saying Miami Nice and “oh don’t do this to me Doris!” every time she got it wrong!! It’s definitely here in UA-cam somewhere!! If I find it I’ll forward you the link!! 🥰🌟🧡
@@TheMisterMarilyn The skit sounds wonderfully delightful. If you do run across it sometime in the future please do forward the link to me. Thank you for taking the time out to talk about this. I can almost visualize it in my head based on your description. ❤️
interview starts around 18:00
This was GOLDEN! Pun intended!
Is that fan asking the question about 30-Something the same guy who ends up being a writer on the show? Voice sounds really similar and his level of fandom checks out...
Marc Cherry. He did actually write for the Golden Girls
i love how witty betty is
Those two men at the beginning really like to hear themselves talk, don’t they?
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I cant believe some bozo actually asked "Why are you showing re-reruns?" Did he think they made 52 episodes a season?
His name is Ronald (Ron) Haver.
What were the episodes they showed at this event?
I wish I knew which 2 episodes it keeps referring to ?
Poor Bea seems nervous at the beginning after her introduction
Which two episodes did they screen for this audience? They keep referring to them as two of their favorites, but don’t mention which ones they are.
I think I gathered from the answers that they watched the pilot, and the one with Jean.
can someone tell me which two episodes were screened? thanks in advance!
It would be nice to know what episode they were talking about.
Which two episodes were screened?
The second episode they saw was episode 5 season 2 isn't it romantic, as Betty mentions it at time index 23 mins
Curious that Ms. Arthur's chair is in profile while the others are all facing the audience directly.
She may have been uncomfortable directly facing the audience, or she simply turned her chair so she was able to join the conversation better.
41:19 -- shame that never happened on the show
why do the presenters always have to be so clinical and ultra-respectul/hesitant/obsequious, etc. when the topic is tv shows like this one....where advertisers paid them a ton to make lewd jokes, behave absurdly, etc, and more etc...: it's not that deep or sacred....get over it
@23:33 The episode.. apparently the second which was screened on that evening and spoken about at the timestamp by Betty White... was 'Isn't it Romantic?'. It was the S02E05 episode (30th episode overall) and was first broadcast on 8 November 1986. It featured actress Lois Nettleton (1927-2008), in her only appearance on 'The Golden Girls' (1985-1992).
The premise of the episode... ugh. A lesbian who could not sense that the character of Rose Nyland was heterosexual. As with any episode, everything hangs off the premise. Ugh... to have it featured more than two years and 60+ episodes later was a mistake.
The episode Estelle Getty mentioned @24:19 was titled 'Old Friends'. It was the S03E01 episode (52nd overall), and was first broadcast on 19 September 1987. Estelle Getty won a Primetime Emmy Award for Outsanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for this episode. This episode also won an Emmy Award: Outstanding Technical Direction/Camera/Video for a Series (source: wikipedia).
Apart from the final episode of the show, this has the top rating on the 'Internet Movie Database (IMDb)' with a rating of 9.0/10. *This* was a fine episode. Kept to the premise of 'The Golden Girls' which was the so-called 'golden years' of one's life.
Thank for the time stamps. It allowed me to stop listening to the sanctimonious Huber.
41:34...I didn't hear what Betty said😓
I think Betty said, “They were trying to get Bo Derick to play the young Rose,” is what I think she said. I hope this helps.
26:00 is that Marc Cherry asking the question?? Or 28:45
Yes
@@vanessapettigrew3416 it’s funny that he went on to write for the show!
@@huntersullivan7861 Yes, I agree!
What two episodes did they watch?
One, for sure, was "Isn't it Romantic", because Betty mentioned Louise (the actress who played Jean)...
The other one, I don't know ..
😊.. 🌿💜
Ale Oli de Mu Thank you so much! 🤗🤩
@@crystalfoster9573 My pleasure 😊.
It would be good to know which was the other episode.. 🤷☺.. 🌿
I think the other episode was the pilot, “The Engagement,” because they made mention of a boyfriend being a bigamist
@@aleolidemu6169 The actress who played Jean was Lois Nettleton, not Louise.
What two episodes did they show?
I think the pilot and the show about Jean the lesbian.
@luuckdroste8745 thank you
51:10
They are being so snobby with some of the questions lol I crack up
At 34:18 it was cringeworthy when some asked about Dorothy wearing layers of clothing in Miami's hot weather. We all know that her clothes were designed to try to cover her spare tire.
All their clothes were way too heavy and thick for even January in Miami.
I think Rue and especially Bea was jealous of Betty. Betty had alot of personality and some people can be jealous of that.
Betty is a master at knowing her audience and having a natural ease at working them - she has been working in tv since the beginning of tv - and a live audience is where she shines !!!
I don't think Bea was jealous. I think she was annoyed at times. She was private and timid and probably just wanted to do her job and go home.
I read that during taping, she didn't like breaking the 4th wall (she came from the stage where you always stayed in character), whereas Betty was the opposite and loved interacting with the audience. Sometimes this made taping last longer, and so I could see why Bea would be irritated.
But I don't fault any lady. They just have/had different personalities and acting philosophies. The audience probably preferred Betty because of her personality, but I think Bea was okay with it because all the attention made her uncomfortable.
She told a story once of how she took her boys to Disneyland in a raincoat, collar up, big sun glasses, and a scarf around her head to avoid being recognized. But later realized that fans see themselves as part of your TV family and just want to say thanks/express their appreciation. But that's a bit different than interacting with an audience during filming or at one of these events.
according to beas son there wasn’t an ounce of jealousy bea knew herself and was confident in herself but was extremely introverted dont know about rue tho
I don’t think Rue was the type to be jealous of anyone she seemed ultra confident in her beauty and acting ability.
