    Aah so this lens and the entire series was made for you. Excellent. Without these lenses, i wouldn't have even touched the S9. Now I am happy owner of an S9 along with the Sigma 45mm f2.8 and Sigma 17 mm f4, amazing kit, which I have been waiting for 10 years.

    About the aperture ring, I come from the Fuji camp and the 45 2.8 here does it just like Fuji does. That’s actually good news for me.

    Just got mine. Didn't check image quality on PC, but primary feature - in person it looks so cuuuuuuuuute, like 3-4 times smaller than any Panasonic's. Just unbelievable how small it is....Well packaged and fells nice, metal. Rings feels good as well. Focusing blazing.
    Thanks again for review!

    Haha I really don't care the aperture ring direction, since i have zero interest in Panasonic lenses 😂 I used to be a Sony fan but the S9 together this and other lenses of this Sigma series made me buy into L mount. So, your 4 year old video became interesting for S9 fans like me.

    I bought this lens a couple of weeks ago to use with my Leica SL and CL. It works brilliantly with both. I would say that the AF isn’t super quick but adequate enough especially when you consider the price point of this lens. The 45mm FF angle of view is really useful on the SL and the near 68mm reach on the CL is fantastic for portraits and background separation. One big note for me is the form factor and balance on the SL is fantastic. I’m really looking forward to trying out more SigmaL-mount lenses :)

    Matti, I think that Panasonic went their own route when designing aperture rings. As far as I'm concerned, the Sony, Fuji, and Zeiss share the same aperture ring direction, so in this case it's actually Panasonic who implemented the non-conventional aperture ring.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 років тому +1

      Sure, but because Sigma and Panasonic are part of the same alliance, I think Sigma should have followed Panasonic in this one. But, the lens is still very usable and lovely little lens. Thanks for commenting.

    Same aperture ring orientation as on my fuji cameras. I've noticed that the S line has a lot in common with the Fuji XH1 and I suspect that they inspected that camera closely. It's very good... (even if Fuji botched up its deployment).

    Matti, this is exactly the field test video I was looking for. I have two questions for you: (1) what did you think of the close focusing characteristics of this lens and (2) did you do much PP work on the first two photos of the gentlemen in the street? They are both really fine images. I could have sworn they were taken with the Panny S 50/1.4.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 років тому

      Thanks! I think the close focus image quality is fine and the min distance useful 24 cm, but it's not a macro of course. I did not do much post production to any of the photos, just some basic things in LR, like contrast, exposure fine tuning etc.

    How does this compare with the Lumix 42.5...good and bad, please? Addendum: noticed your hand strap in some videos...what is yours and or what would you recommend...Thanks again for the superb video work and information!

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 років тому

      There is not much point to compare the Lumix 42,5mm and this Sigma, because the other one is a full frame lens and the other is a micro 4/3 lens. Two different systems and different lenses.

      @@mattisulanto So this won't or will work on a G9?

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  5 років тому

      @@MrFirstdance2000 It's an L mount lens, and I mention that also in the video, so it won't work on any micro 4/3 camera. If you need something like 45mm for your G9, there are two Lumix and two Olympus options to choose from. There's also the Sigma 56mm f/1.4, which is a bit longer, but also very nice lens.

    Many Thanks for the review. I have just ordered a secondhand one for my second hand Leica SL. which I bought only a few days again. I am planning to use my SL for my manual M mount lenses and my Hasselblad V lenses (via Kipon Baveyes speed booster). L mount cameras are not famous for their autofocus capability especially its poor AF-C tracking performance when comparing with other cameras.That said, this Sigma 45mm f2.8 would be a good walk round lens for the SL. By the way, I found your T shirt slogan quite interesting. It is true in some but not all circumstances. I will only use a mirrorless camera to shot anything fast moving when I have not got my Nikon D500 or D4s with me. With regard to your gripe about the aperture ring, the layout of those figures on Sigma are the same as those on Nikon and Sony. They are the same on Panasonic and Leica. It is akin to whether left hand or right hand drive car is better. I myself can't see any problem with it. Perhaps I don't follow a partiuclar brand or type of camera religiously. Don't get me wrong, I love my Rolleiflex f2.8 even it has inaccurate metering, no autofocus or LCD preview screen but I will not use it for shooting birds in flight.

  • @klarion
    @klarion 4 роки тому +1

    Very nice small lens for a large camera. I found it acceptable with a good rendering. Relatively fast focus fall off at f4 and nothing too harsh in background rendering. Though, I suspect that it's light transmission value is on the low side per aperture setting. When I use it with auto ISO, the camera is setting values 1 to 1.3 stops higher than on my other setups. It's worth investigating... whether that's a camera or a lens issue.

    • @mattisulanto
      @mattisulanto  4 роки тому

      I think it's a small lens for a small camera, the Sigma FP. Also, Panasonic will eventually make smaller L mount cameras as well. Thanks for your thoughts.

    The price of this lens has come down significantly now on the used market. Thank you for tipping sigma to make smaller lenses!! Wish Leica would do it … but they seem to be downsizing and avoiding to upset other manufacturers in the l mount alliance who are going for this “benevolent” oligopoly
