FREEZING Solo Wild Camping on Scafell Pike

- Scafell Pike Summit Wild Camp - I set off from Seathwaite in Borrowdale for a night on Englands highest mountain - Scafell Pike at 3210ft. My route took me up the side of Ruddy Gill in the shadow of Great End, and from the top of Ruddy Gill onwards to Esk Hause at 2500ft. The ascent continued past Great End, Ill Crag and Broad Crag, then the final ascent to Scafell Pike summit. Due to the extremely rocky nature of the summit, pitching opportunities are scarce, however I had spotted this area on a previous trip and was hopeful I could get my tent pitched there. My kit consisted of the Hilleberg Akto tent, Alpkit Pipedream 400 sleeping bag, and the Thermarest NeoAir Xlite sleeping mat. Temperatures dipped just below freezing on a very cold but stunning night, with clear skies overhead. On my return route I retraced my steps to the top of Ruddy Gill before continuing past Sprinkling Tarn and Styhead Tarn under the shadow of Great Gable, before returning to Seathwaite. A 12 mile walk with 3700ft of ascent.
Many thanks for watching - Dave

Thank you so much for these videos. How else could a homesick 82 year old with rheumatoid arthritis living in Australia possibly enjoy these adventures. Find it hard to come back to reality when I finish watching - it’s just like being there. Reminds me of my childhood in Scotland roaming the hills. Please keep them coming.
That’s lovely Eleanor. I’m no spring chicken myself so just doing it while I can. Sending love from the uk 🇬🇧. Take care - Dave
My heart is always in the Highlands and that's from an Englishman.
@@donpardoe8067 know what you mean Don.
You are a fantastic ambassador for the Lake District and beyond.. you seem to evaluate situations and surroundings perfectly. I have been binge watching your videos lately.. I lost my “mojo” as they say with the outdoors 15 years ago for many reasons.. but you alone have inspired me to get out there again.. I thank you for your time and tips.. you really are the most honest and accurate “you tuber” in your chosen field.. 🙏🙏🙏
Wow, such kind words Duncan. Really appreciate that. Means a lot 🙏🏻. Take care - Dave
Just love it Dave. Love the joy in your face and voice. That’s how I feel. Don’t think there’s any other way of getting that joy 🏔🏕
The lake district is he best place in the world and these videos make me really want to get back there again.
I’ll watch later with a cup of tea! I gave your video a shout out earlier today. I’ve a video out at 7pm too.
Looking forward to it!
Look forward to this too 👌
Love it mate, it's a bloody horrible summit Scarfell, nothing but rocks but those views are worth it.
I really love what you do , I did this in the early 80s in the snow and camped right on the top it was a brilliant starry night loved it and you will know the feeling never leaves you. Keep yours coming. Enjoy.
Wow David that’s brilliant. You’re obviously much more experienced than me. Respect 🙏🏻. You might like my video where I did a bivi camp next to the summit of Helvellyn. ATB - Dave
I've been lucky enough to have travelled a reasonable amount and seen some stunning places, but there's just something special about the Lake District. Great video.
This video was stunning and had those moments of tranquility which are priceless.

Fair comment , Dave l realise you can’t please everyone l’d just like to say that l enjoyed your local videos l’m 74 and all my family on both sides were from Darwen lt brought back happy memories of walking those moors , l still walk up to the tower occasionally when l visit my friend in Chorley. My local walks now are on the North Yorks Moors, Bilsdale and Rydale. I will be watching some more of your videos tonight
First time I've watched one of your vids and the sunrise shot from 23.42 has made me subscribe - beautifully done mate.
Brilliant mate and thank you from Australia 😃🙌🇦🇺👏
Big thanks Max🙏🏻. All the best from the uk 🇬🇧 😎👍
The last time we went up there, I kept thinking to myself that the only person that can manage to pitch a tent here would be David. And here you are! Cheers mate, always love your content!

Big thanks Christine. Glad you enjoyed it 🙏🏻
Thursday treat, the splendour and beauty of the Lake District. The dusk and dawn colours are stunning Dave. Your tent must have a cloaking device, it vanishes into the landscape. Looking forward to holiday we’ve booked at Eskdale Green even more after this! 👏👏👍👍☕️🇬🇧
Stunning video really enjoyed it the hard slog up was so worth it for them stunning views and to have it all to yourself even for a short time priceless 👍👍
Big thanks Stuart. It’s a stunning place to have to yourself 😎👍
Absolutely amazing again. I can’t believe I live so close to the Lakes but have never been up a big hill there yet... ashamed! Thank you for taking me up with you. That pan up to the sunrise from the summit shelter was spine tingling. Love the music too. 10/10

Those skies Dave. So worth the effort and the cold. It’s great to see for those of us who can’t do it much anymore. The view of Gable from the Pike always gives me goosebumps

Congratulations on 5k subs! I'm so happy I stumbled across your channel a month or two ago. I must have watched close to all your videos. A no nonsense, down to earth channel. Can't wait to see what the rest of the year brings. Keep doing what you're doing Dave. Your videos offer a glimpse into a world some of us have yet to discover.
Thank you so much!!
What a morning....stunning. just in proscess of editing my Hard Tarn camp after seeing yours and being inspired. Keep it up.....

Now this is a proper wildcamp, amazing sunrise, and it looks like the weather was kind to you.
Really enjoyed that Dave, thanks for sharing
Much appreciated Steve 🙏🏻
Thanks Dave, as usual superb. First did that 'easy' route in 2013 and had to turn back 150 feet from the top .. an absolute white out, lucky to find ANY cairns .... went back a month later and cracked it. It's a bloody LONG drive from Newquay mate. Cheers for a great channel.
Another great video. Those views were stunning and fantastic photography. Thanks for sharing ATB Gary
Classic. One of the best yet.
Brilliant as always Dave, you captured the beauty and peace (when there's no idiots about!) of being in the mountains. I think you should produce your own range of "Brew with a View" merchandise! Top man, take care, Simon in Somerset.
Great vid, scafell is so magical ✨👌 especially when hardly anyone is around.
"Always learning, taking it all in", couldn't agree with you more Dave.
Thought I'd save watching this latest vid, tucked up in bed nursing my injured leg which happened on the Fairfield Horseshoe last Monday with Boyzone from work.
Any way enough of my tales of woe! Scafell Pike is just a fantastic spot and you did well to find a pitch up there on the roof of England. I was up there last year and went onto climb up Lord's Rake and Scafell via Lingmell and Piers Gill. It makes your heart and mind soar. Loved the vid Dave and the music me ol'shiner.
Keep 'em coming M8.
Michael.😤👊🙏
Love your videos! Absolutely fantastic 👏
🙏🏻
Great stuff dave 👍⛺️
Another great video Dave, those shots watching the sunrise where spectacular what a sunrise.... 2 big mountains you've had to yourself back to back you jammy bugger
Great vid Dave. Loved that it was a longer one, so we could savour the dusk and dawn scenery along with you.... I certainly felt the ‘can’t tear myself away’! Keep it up.
Big thanks Ian 🙏🏻
Brings back some great memories, 1973, spent the night at Seathwaite, after a days climbing on Gillercombe Buttress, Charlie Wilson joined us, he had some great stories about post war climbing. Next day we were running the route and it was sweltering, zip over Scafell Pike, flew up Broad Stand and onto Scafell then down to Brackenclose, Wasdale for the night … I’ve been back numerous times, but the first time was so memorable, the view of Scafell crag, picking out CB and Botterills Slab was just the stuff of great memories … Oh to be young and fit again.
Wow Andrew, that’s an awesome story. Big thanks for sharing. Happy days. I know the feeling. Memories are better than dreams 😎👍🙏🏻🏔⛺️
Nice one. Beautiful part of the world there.
Your smile at the top said it all, what a fantastic sunrise and a cracking video, cheers Dave atb 🙂

Like camping on another planet up there. Superb footage.

Superb Solo 😁😁😁😁 great video... 👍👍
Amazing sunrise 🌄
Absolutely fantastic vid Dave (as always) it looks incredible up there....you could've been the last man on Earth or even another planet! so quiet and serene, at least until the groups started turning up chattering and clattering (Hell is other people IMHO) thanks so much for these films, they really do mean so much to me and everyone who watches them and can't wait for every new release take care and stay safe mate😁❤👍👏
🙏🏻
Brilliant video again Dave... stunning scenery and views and camera work fabulous! Hat's off buddy, thoroughly enjoyed!!!
Just watching in Keswick after my hike 🚶♂️ drying off. Thanks for sharing.
Great video👍
An enjoyable watch....i have hobbled down that Ruddy gill path a few times with sore feet.
Magic Dave 👍🏻
Nice one Dave, it looks like you are heading right back to full fitness again, I really admire that you put some blooming good hikes either side of your overnighters. What a pitch and great too that you were rewarded with peace on the hill. Thanks for putting up with cold fingers in order to share your adventures with us.. Mind you I thought you might be going a bit soft as no dunk in the tarn, but when I saw all those people I understand your reluctance... lol. Look forward to the next one. Take care and ATB
For me Dave this is your best film, IT IS EPIC in so many ways. The editing, photos, choice of music and just the whole vibe in it is fantastic. That sunrise was something else! I will be back in the Lakes soon, my spiritual mountain home. Thanks again dude for some awesome work. Simon :)
I’m lost for words Simon. Massive 🙏🏻
Hi Dave, I watch a lot of outdoor and wild camping videos but, sincerely, yours always come out top for me. And you’re always blessed with amazing weather! It’s brilliant to see you out again. Having posted several mountain camps in short succession you must be as fit as a mountain goat now! Fantastic, thanks for sharing the experience.
Awesome, thank you!
Totally stunning pictures it looked like you were camping on another planet
Amazing 👏👏👌

Absolutely amazing video Dave. I'm planning on doing a bivi on Scafell at some point this summer. Really enjoyed your adventure.
That time lapse of the sunrise is just breathtaking 😍 Everytime I pitch on a summit it’s clagged in 😂 Another cracking video though Dave 👍🏻
