5,5K are not "great value", it is more than many could bear. And all the cables through the headset is a real pity - it will be so much more difficult to make the repairs in the future.

I used to have similar thinking with internal headset cable routing, but after building a gravel bike with it and dealing with my wife's e-bike that has it, I found it adds a marginal amount of complexity to the the headache that is internal cable routing. I did not find it too awful to deal with. However, 5500 pounds....yikes. That is a lot of money.

@@growlith6969 Yes same. For the money, might as well go all the way to full power. I bought a 55nm hardtail for my father, but it was only $1K US on closeout and he sticks to canal paths. Given how much smaller full power motors are starting to get, I don't get lightweight E-MTBs at all. They are not even that much lighter!

  • @Salvaregh

I have owned this very light e-bike for a couple of months, primarily using it for all-mountain and enduro riding on Alpine single tracks. It's a highly capable machine, though calling it a "mini enduro" might be a bit of an overstatement :) While it can handle challenging enduro sections with ease, it requires skillful riding. As Rob noted, it tends to generate significant speed and isn't very forgiving. However, I wouldn't describe it as "nervous." Perhaps "razor-sharp, requiring precision" would be more accurate.
The Bosch SX motor provides plenty of power - you can do most of the things you usually do with a full-power bike, but with considerably more effort and by significantly increasing your pedaling cadence. The walk mode is extraordinarily powerful, decidedly more so than the walk mode of the Bosch gen 4 (not Smart System) on the full-power e-bike I own, a 2020 Orbea Wild.
The main issue with this e-bike by Cube lies with the stock braking system, which is woefully inadequate - spongy (despite repeated bleeding) and lacking power. This is due to both the brake model (MT Trail Carbon, featuring 4-piston MT7 calipers on the front and 2-piston MT8 calipers on the rear) and the brake discs (180mm, which Cube, for some inexplicable reason, even installs on their analog enduro models - ONE55 and ONE77!).
Upon receiving the bike, I implemented the following improvements (which Rob also suggested): 1) Increased the fork length to 150mm (by changing the air shaft) to improve downhill capabilities, achieving approximately a 65° head angle; 2) Swapped the rear disc to 203mm while retaining the MT Trail Carbon (which resulted in minimal improvement); 3) Installed 4-piston MT7 calipers on the rear (again, with little improvement).
Finally, I replaced the entire brake system with a classic pair of reliable Shimano XT BR-8120 brakes (which I have on my Orbea Wild). This completely changed the braking performance, eliminating forearm and hand fatigue during rides. It's disappointing that such an expensive bike is sold with such an undersized braking system (MT Trail Carbon).
P.S. I am familiar with Magura brake systems. I have MT5 brakes on my front enduro bike, which I think I'll keep as they work fairly well. I also had MT7 brakes installed on my analog enduro - a 2020 Trek Slash that I've upgraded significantly over the years. Over time, the MT7s have often given me problems, showing poor reliability and being difficult to bleed. So I took the opportunity to replace these as well with Shimano XT brakes.

You could have gone with just installing the Shimano XT levers paired with those calipers. I'm quite heavy and this combination works pretty sweet for me (4p front, 2p rear). I tried them with stock Magura levers and indeed there was plenty or arm-pump.

@@fredEVOIX you raise some great points re size and hear dissipation. We’ve seen these problems with electric motors in other applications such as power tools and it remains to be seen how good the DJI set up is in real life. It’s why I am sitting back and enjoying my Bosch CX gen 4 for a while longer before I invest in the DJI set up. I’ll let others test and prove the gen 1 DJI and I’ll be waiting for when/if we have some results that say it’s as good as the manufacturer says it is. But on paper I think the Bosch SX could be obsolete if gen 1 DJI Avinox hits the spot.

Pretty much the same month these bikes came out was the same time that Fox launched their 2025 fork and dropper models.
