If your tractor doesn’t have an expansion tank, then Per the manual, fill the coolant up to a level just below the port. But what is the “port”? The port is the entryway or fillway or opening where you screw in the pressure cap. So basically, fill the radiator up to just below the fill hole. If your tractor has an overflow vent/whistle, that hole will be just below the port cap, and visible. Don’t fill it above that hole. Use clean water or even filtered or purified water. If your tractor overheats, the whistle will blow and/or you will smell the coolant. Turn your tractor into the wind and slow down and Stop the tractor from moving and clear the seeds and grass and debris away from the radiator. DON’T SHUT OFF THE ENGINE! The engine keeps the coolant flowing in many engines via the water pump. If you shut down the engine you can get spot boiling inside the engine block which can lead to the block not getting properly cooled or unevenly cooled and the block can crack- no more engine! After cleaning the radiator and letting the engine cool, THEN you can shut off the tractor’s engine. After any time you overheat the tractor, refill the radiator again, as per above. The whistle-overflow lowers the tank level and if you overheat the tractor often without cleaning the radiator and cooling it down, you will boil off too much water and have no coolant! This is the worst thing you can do to an engine!
Fine video, but please show how much fluid I should see in the radiator itself? The radiator hose came off my new (less than 25 hrs) L2502, and I need to ensure proper coolant levels. Will it simply suck out of the expansion bottle, or do I need to fill radiator also?
Thanks for the vid on this important topic. What should I consider to do, if I found the expansion tank empty, but the radiator is top level? No overheating shown on the gauge, no visible leakages outside. Regards Heinz
My tractor Kubota M6040 .The reservoir tank overflow but not overheating. I changed radiator cap and thermostat already but it just the same. Please tell me
Hi, there is a hose on the right side of my Kubota L2850 DT (1993), which shows some drops spilling ( near on the manifold hydraulicbloc). Does the engine become too hot? I would expect, that all the hot coolant should be stored in the expansion tank. Could you shed some light on the set-up, please. Regards Heinz
Can't even see the tank in my Civic 2012. It took me forever to even find it and to make it worse the tank is quite opaque so no idea how I can check its levels 😢

I needed to read this comment two days ago! My neighbor waved me down and the whistle was a blowin'. I hadn't heard it because my headphones but I immediately freaked and shut it off. Things were smoking and leaking. Now I'm out of coolant and trying to research what I should put in my ZD21 that I can find at the local auto parts store. No one here seems to know and it isn't clear cut from the manual.
Nice explanation. I have a question. After completing around 2500 kms on my new motorcycle, one day I noticed my reservoir coolant level was just below the low mark. But the radiator was full. I’m worried, is it okay? please help. Thanks in advance
I’m assuming your rad has a 50/50 antifreeze mix. I assume you’ve added to the reservoir tank to bring it back up to the low mark? If it was only just a little down, like 1-2 oz, it’s likely just evaporation. In that case, just add distilled water. If it’s down 4-6 oz, you might have a leak. Add 50/50 mix rad fluid and investigate the leak.
Have a Grasshopper 721D with Kubota Diesel. Bought last year used. There was oil in the radiator which I thought he might of added an additive. Mowed with it last year no problems. It wouldn't start this spring so the dealer pick it up put a starter in it and said something about the oil in the radiator. He flushed it out added new fluid and everything looked good. I checked it the other day and oil again. No fluid in my oil. Got me stumped can you enlighten me.
Hare Kṛṣṇa Hare Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Kṛṣṇa Hare Hare Hare Rāma Hare Rāma Rāma Rāma Hare Hare! You are enlightened. Actually, your oil pressure is say 30-45 psi. coolant typically is 5-15 psi. your oil leak is likely pushing into the coolant but your coolant cannot push back into the oil.
Depends where the hole is. If the pick up tube is below the fluid level vacuum will pull it back to the radiator. They were talking about a hole in the line between the reservoir and the raditor.
This is not helpful. I have a 2nd gen (IRS) RTV 900 and have looked from engine compartment and under the seat, but cannot find how to check/fill coolant.
This is a great explanation. Many cooling systems are unique and you may need to check for your specific application. Sometimes the reservoir is only a catch can and not a reservoir that can be evacuated. Some have the plastic container as the actual pressurized tank on your system. follow the radiator hose from engine to radiator. then look at the top of the radiator. It must have a cap or a hose that goes to a reservoir. I have a genset that has a onan cummins that has a separate reservoir bottle that has a hose to the radiator do you have that?
This is by far the best explanation I’ve seen. Was searching for 15 min before finding your video and it’s by far the best!
Thanks for sharing! Right to the point and very well explained.
Checking daily is a bit extreme. I check about once a month, And take notice of the temp gauge between checks. Never had a problem doing this.
Great explanation.
This should have 1M views. Other videos should be deleted. Great job great explanation!
Thank you very informative 👍
When you take the cap off, what are you looking for? Can you see coolant up to the top? It's hard to tell from the video. Thanks.
My question also. Seems like they’d show it or tell if you’d see it full to the top or not.

What if your truck does not have an overflow bottle?

I can't figure out how to get the cap off the coolant reservoir. It doesn't want to twist. The manual is silent on this.

Same with my Forester.
What if bubbles not come, but coolant level raise when starting the engine coolant level raise up slightly.
My L2800 doesn't have an overflow jug. How do I check it without it?
My tractor Kubota M6040 .The reservoir tank overflow but not overheating. I changed radiator cap and thermostat already but it just the same. Please tell me

Ok so I have coolant in the overflow bottle but I don’t see any coolant when I open the radiator cap. Is that normal
did you watch the video. no.

So, what level is it supposed to be inside the cap???? How do you gloss over that?
I have big problem with My car Nissan ad Wangon is over heating just in 40-50 minutes I change the radiator but still.😢😢😢
