During an exclusive interview with India Today’s Managing Director, Rahul Kanwal, at the India Today Conclave Mumbai 2023, Amitabh Kant, India's G20 Sherpa, offered valuable insights into the rigorous negotiations that paved the way for the historic Delhi Declaration at the recent G20 Summit. Kant provided a fascinating glimpse into the behind-the-scenes deliberations, revealing that the conclusive rounds of discussions transpired on September 8, just one day before the commencement of the two-day G20 Summit. He recounted the unwavering resolve exhibited during these negotiations, stating, "On September 8, we had the final round of meetings, and we made it clear: 'This is the final draft, take it or leave it.' We believed it encapsulated everyone's non-negotiables and unequivocally declared that further deliberations at the sherpa level were off the table. Any leader with concerns could directly engage with our leader. Astonishingly, by 3:30 in the morning, we had secured the support of emerging markets." Kant further underscored the pivotal role played in achieving consensus, explaining, "By morning, we had gained the approval of the majority of G7 nations. However, Russia presented a challenge. Between 2 am and 4 am, we engaged in intensive negotiations with Russia and succeeded in gaining their cooperation." In conclusion, Kant emphasized Prime Minister Modi's steadfast commitment to ensuring India's G20 involvement yielded an action-oriented and resolute G20 outcome. The Delhi Declaration stands as a momentous accomplishment, reflecting India's unwavering dedication to catalyzing impactful change within the global community.
