  • Showing how to get to the controller, configure the RAID, and initialize. I'm sorry about not editing my video down to under 5 mins. This was my very first time inside an R740 and my very first time getting to the H740 controller so you'll see in the video I was confused a bit at times. Since I did not find anyone else showing this info on UA-cam, I thought I'd throw this out to you guys.

    Thanks, this new RAID config scenario was driving me nuts. Wondered where the Ctrl-R went. Thanks again.

    Currently i create a VD with 78TB capacity and select full initialization, is it possible to without 100% initialization done, this host access the vd, because when i click to initialize in disk management its showing me the device is not ready.

    Thank you for video. Very helpful! Did you understand why the strange behavior in the first initialization?

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  4 роки тому

      I never did figure that out. Maybe a Dell bug, where it initializes all uninitialized array containers that are not initialized at least once after creation. It's scary to think that I could have just wiped out a customers data.

    Hi , How can i add a hot spare disk in RAID5 configuration here in R740? , i have 6 4TB SAS disks

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  4 роки тому +1

      I haven't verified this, but you should be able to do the drop-down commands within the View Physical Disks menu and select "designate hot spare" or similar.

    Thank you for the videos. Can you run R740 server without a PERC card? I don't need raid? Can i run it with just a 8 bay sff backplane and no perc card or controller?

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  Рік тому

      Yes! The main board has a sata interface. You'll need the cable set designed to connect from those connectors to the backplane. The perc cable set is different. Then you'll have JBOD control of the drives!

    I've drive Bay for alot of hdds ata
    Now I'm going to install 2 ssd as an Os and remove the old drives
    And also increasing the storage drives ( the old was 1 tb and 1 tb mirror as raid 1)
    What recommendation for 2.4 Tb for 5 HDD ata as storage 2.5 inches as raid?
    Which best practice best raid 5 or 6?
    And is there is a way to install running Windows server 2016 ( clone) from the old ata HDD to the new ssd?
    Thank for the vedio and hope for answering my questions soon
    God bless you

      You can easily migrate your OS to new SSD's live. As long as your old drives and new drives are of the same type (SAS or SATA). Assuming the old drives are RAID1 you can pull out one drive, then insert one new SSD drive and let the array rebuild. Once rebuild is completed, then do the same for the other drive. Of course best practice is to backup prior to doing this. The new drive must be the same size or larger. If you want to upgrade from 1TB 7.2K to 2TB SSD you can do it live, but the final outcome will be limited to 1TB. If you wish to migrate from 1TB 7.2K drives to 2TB drives and at the same time expand the total capacity up to 2TB then (you can't do it live) you must either backup and restore to the new set, or copy the array (Acronis or similar) to the newly created array. If you have enough drive bays available to run both arrays simultaneously. Same concept if you want to go from SATA to SAS or vice versa. If your OS drive is a single drive, you can also migrate it live by first upgrading it from RAID0 to RAID1, then performing the first procedure.
      Best practice is to always use RAID6. This does cost more money, but gives you double drive failure protection. This becomes more crucial with higher capacity drives. Using 4TB, 8TB, 10TB, 16TB drives can take days to rebuild, so having the rebuild start immediately upon failure is key. And during rebuild, this is the most likely time that a second failure would occur since you are hammering the drives for days during the rebuild. Not only does it cost more money, it costs space as well. If you have a limited number of drive bays, then RAID6 means you have one less bay for space. Obviously, a 4 or 8 bay chassis will be very limiting. Mathematical example, a 4 bay chassis will cost you 1/4 of the avail space, but a 24 bay chassis will only cost you 1/24 of max avail space to add that extra parity drive.
      For your storage drives, if you can afford the space loss, RAID6 will give you 7.2TB (5x2.4tb 2parity). If your project needs up to 9.6TB (5x2.4tb 1parity), then your only choice is RAID5. You will need to copy or clone your data over from the 1TB RAID1 array over to the new RAID6 (or RAID5) array. So you can't do it live. If you have enough empty drive bays then this is easy. If you are short on bays, then you can create a RAID0 with your 2.4tb drive, copy the data over, pull out your 1tb RAID1, then promote your RAID0 to RAID1, then promote to RAID 5, then to RAID 6. Or you can start from anywhere in the chain. You could start with a RAID5 (3 drives), then after you pull out the mirror set, and the remaining drives and promote.

    hello sir, how to create multiple virtual disk in RAID10 configuration?

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  3 роки тому

      The interface should allow you to create as many virtual disks arrays as you want. It knows all the rules and will not let you do it wrong. It knows about count requirements for the given array type and it will keep you from mixing incompatible drive types. It will let you mix sizes, which would result in loss of maximum potential array size, but it will show you all the stats prior to commitment.

    How do i install Raid Controller because i don't have it listed under "Device Settings" ?

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  Рік тому

      It's a card. There are two different styles of cards, either the mini-card or a PCI card. 3JH35 or 6P6RN are example part numbers you can find on ebay.

    Question how long did the initialization take for the RAID-6?

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  3 роки тому

      Wow! I can't remember it's been so long! But I can give you some general numbers. It seems that a 300GB 15K or 600GB15K are very quick and take maybe about an hour or less. Whether you have a 4 disk set or a 24 disk set, the speed is not that different. My vague recollection of the 1.2 10K's are about 1.5hrs-2hrs. As you move into the larger SATA drives like 4GB, 8GB, times will increase significantly at about 1hr/GB. Again, very rough recollection.

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  4 роки тому

      No. I'll try and run thru the procedure on another machine and see if I can figure out what really happened there. It's no big deal on a machine that is out of production, but obviously extremely critical in a production environment installing new drives.

    Where is output audio port for this model R740

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  2 роки тому

      I don't think there are any audio ports on rack servers. At best you could enable the virtual audio in a WIndows Server install for use with RDP sessions from a PC and output the audio on the PC. One other way would be to have a graphics card that had HDMI output ports, which would give you the audio via video connector.

    You can configure raid by using lifecycle controller

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  Рік тому

      Yes, I show it here:
      ua-cam.com/video/GKq2UwR-RVQ/v-deo.html
      Also, I think you cannot configure RAID in the lifecycle controller if you only have Basic Management. You must have Express or Enterprise to configure the RAID in the lifecycle controller. Someone correct me on this if I'm wrong.

    Why do none of these videos focus on ADDING a RAID Array. Each one of these videos has you wiping out the old array. That's not the typical scenario. You fill up the space on your existing array and you need to add a new one is the most common scenario I can think of yet no one shows how to do it.

    • @hgodtx
      @hgodtx  6 місяців тому

      You're probably right. I think it's so common that 99% of techs doing work on servers already know this, like you said since it is the most common thing. Personally, I try and make videos of things I could not find an answer to elsewhere. Such as this seemingly loss of the CTRL-R function. That's how I like to contribute. I probably won't do a video on how to add a drive into an array because I did find a few others already well done (although no narrative). Here is one of them...
