This is one of my favorite scenes in the movie because Bananarama's "Cruel Summer" is playing in the background. Whenever I hear that song, I always think of this scene. It's a real treat to be able to see these rehearsal shots.
On one hand, the final product is really well done, the shots are perfect and the interactions are natural. I liked the football scene in the final movie better with Ali doing the cheerleading routine and Dutch making faces at Daniel, but then you have some nice bits here like how Ali laughs at Daniel saying "Daniel with an L" and this little interaction between Daniel and Lucille that didn't get included in the movie. It's nice to see the two versions and how they add to each other and how they sort of evolved or changed. Like In this one Daniel says his little voice says he must be some kind of coconut and in the final movie he uses the word "yoyo" instead. So happy Mr Avildsen shared this. Rest in peace and thanks for helping create this saga.
Little did they know, at the time, this would become an iconic part of 80s history and still going to this day. I watch this movie every time it comes on tv and can’t count the amount I’ve seen it.
Thanks for sharing, that explains why Daniel's mom was working at a restaurant and not in a computer company. That always confused me when watching the movie.
The scene with Daniel sitting on the pie was actually in the novelization, and a photo of it appears on the back cover. I remember noticing that when I read that book.
Thanks for sharing this. I really identified with the movie. I moved to SoCal from NY shortly after this movie and was that new kid in the area who like the typical SoCal blonde girl and had to deal with feeling out of place. I was also into martial arts and found it as my way to cope with the problems feeling like a runt. Now 49, married with 6 kids, this still has a big impression on me. I also dream of making a yard and house like Miyage's. Awesome...thanks for the memories!
My favourite movie of all time! They did such an awesome job, Ralph Macchio is a really good actor aswell, I love when you get to see the actors ad libbing. And this is just the rehearsels, if not for the backgrounds this could have been the movie!
Elizabeth shue! Be still my heart. Harvard grad, AND absolutely stunning! This was lightning in a bottle. Zabka, macchio, shue.... even mama dukes was such a natural actress! So much thought, and charm in this movie. Oh! And pat Morita, of course!

Mr. Avildsen, you are by far one of the best directors out there. The cafeteria scene between Johnny and Daniel was a great cut bu you. It would have been way too much Johnny and Daniel and it wasnt needed. The Referee for the end fight scenes would have made a great John Crese. Not only Rocky and this movie were my inspirations, Your other movies Power of one, Lean on me and even For Keeps? were terrific. not to mention i was a big fan of Neighbors with Beluchi and Akroid. You are the best!

Damn that "Alli with an I" scene on the soccer field was blocked identical to the final film. That's the mark of a brilliant director. R.I.P Mr. Avildsen
I really enjoyed Martin Kove in the final film; but, man, Pat E. Johnson is INTENSE! With his training, I don't think a gun would've stopped the Cobra Kai. Kove's character, Kreese, was intense, too, but he came off as very insecure, especially in Karate Kid 3. Pat E. Johnson, on the other hand, was all-business and no-nonsense. He was great as the tournament referee.
In a recent interview, Elisabeth Shue talks about how she grew up playing soccer and had to pretend to be a novice at her soccer ball bouncing skills. She said she was much better at it than Ralph 😂
Thank you so much for replying, its such a thrill to get a comment from the legendary director of "Rocky" 1 and 5 and the "Karate Kid" series.... And "8 Seconds" was pretty good too...
Thank you for uploading this. I find it very interesting seeing the other side of how a movie is made. Also, how come Martin Kove is not doing the acting parts of Kreese for the rehearsals? Is it because he was not cast for the part yet?
Correct, Kove was the last one to be hired on. The scary gentleman filling in for him in this scene was the referee you see at the all-state tournament :)
To be accurate he was probably about 21 turning 22 around this rehearsal. The film was released a few months before he was 23. But I understand your point, it's still pretty crazy. He looks barely 16.
8:22 Pat Johnson as John Kreesse is terrifying too (RIP for him 🙌🏻) 10:22 Many years later William Zabka pulling his now iconic "QUIET" in a similar way 😎
Dutch looks like he's trying not to laugh when Bobby is getting scolded. Pat Johnson made a hell of a Kreese. Like Marty Kove but Pat's intensity made him look like a Sunday School teacher.
I was a kid when the movie came out and I saw it in the theaters. The pie scene and a few others were actually in the movie, and I had the book, and a picture of the pie scene was on the back cover. I never saw those scenes again but in the theater. I was always looking for DVD's that may include deleted scenes...no luck
@ShadowMan2192, I agree, it was Thomas Ian Griffith and Sean Kanan's performance that saved the third movie from being complete sewer. Explains why those two were in many movies lol.
Mox j dunno. Johnny at this point would ground & pound Daniel before a teacher could break it up. Woulda been 1 confrontation too many. I admit any scene with Johnny & Daniel are good but might have been overkill. Johnny isn't the typical insecure bully picking on Daniel for sport. He's jealous of his relationship with Ali. The pie bit comes across as even a little too immature for him.
I'd have loved to see Karate Kid as it was originally intended before this even.. The first idea was this to be a serious martial arts movie. Thosiro Mifune was who they wanted for Miyagi's part. Would have 100% been a different movie just from the 'i'm a bad ass' vibe Mifune carried with him.
Hi Mr. Avidlsen, its amazing seeing this old archival footage and thank you so much for sharing it with us...But I was wondering do you have any footage of the Karate Kid parts 2 and 3 or Rocky???... I love all the Karate Kid movies but I would have to say part 2 is my favorite. Thanks again sir!
@avildsen1221 I always thought the scenes were somewhat necessary because one explains the mother's mysterious job switch as it brought more character development between Daniel and his mother. Something the fans wanted to see; but, the movie's pace would've been slowed down. I also thought the pie scene with Daniel and Johnny should have been kept; however, Daniel was being tortured enough and the storytelling would've been redundant. All in all, wonderful job made for a wonderful movie.
Wow, I didn't know Lucille didn't get the computer job and instead worked for a restaurant. I guess the "they're gonna train me to be a manager....the BENEFITS! I could never get them working in computers" makes a lot more sense now.
Yeah, I do believe that that is Pat E. Johnson, who was officially the martial arts choreographer on the movie as well as playing the ref at the end. I'm pretty sure he also trained Ralph and Pat for their parts as well.
