hey ,his first voice actor in Brazil has passed away and he has dubbed other artists from the united states he is Cleomir dos Santos ua-cam.com/video/7hUVNPqC1t4/v-deo.html
When actors do as great a job as this, it's almost a curse, because you love the character so much, it's disappointing when you realise it is just in fact a character they're playing.
I always wondered how Ralph Macchio was as a person. He seems like a really cool guy. This film is such a CLASSIC! It's nice to see films where you, actually, root for the protagonist unlike today's films. This film is one of my all time favorites, and definitely a staple of my childhood.
I can speak personally; he is the real deal. I met him alongside C. Thomas Howell at Chiller Theater in Parsippany Sheraton some years back and he was so down to earth. It was weird because Tom is huge and tall now, but if you remember The Outsiders, they were both short and skinny. It was really cool, and I could've spent hours chatting with those two guys. It was a really fun experience.
However, if u are in your fifties, you should realise real life would not revolve around karate but more so guns and knives. The truth is in Liverpool uk , he would be stabbed by inner city kids
Love the approach they took with this movie - long, uninterrupted takes, minimal cuts, and an emphasis on authenticity. I guess it's not always possible with actors that don't have the Morita-Macchio chemistry, but man I wish more filmmakers today took this approach.
avildsen1221 Hey Mr. Avildsen, this movie rocks and you are a wonderful director. Also, Your son did an amazing job of trying out for Mike Barnes on the third movie. Any specific reason he didn't get the part?
That's a nice point. I heard two filmmakers--brothers who had made a documentary recently--on NPR talking about the second KK movie. They said it basically sucked (I don't agree) but they said there was one scene in it that was a touchstone for them as to how to shoot a scene right. Even before they named the scene, I knew it was the one where Daniel-sun and Miyagi are sitting and looking out at the water and talking about their fathers just after Miyagi's has died. It's a powerful scene, perfectly shot, in long takes that give a sense of deep time. Most of the mainstream flicks today don't even risk a long take since they don't trust their actors, and they don't trust their audience to keep paying attention.
This is so great!. these videos were all shot during the weeks of prep/rehearsals before production began. They had the luxury of having access to the locations and most of the cast was available. I was James Crabe's "A" Camera Operator on the movie and during production, John (Avildson) would take us into the trailer after each scene rehearsal and show us these videos he had shot. It gave us a pretty good idea of how he envisioned it. It saved so much time and we were able to go back to the set and set up the various shots for the scene without having to go through a lot of extra verbal communication. As we worked, John and James would watch the video assist monitor and we were able to work smoothly, make any necessary changes to the shot. I loved working for both of them... and obviously The Karate Kid was one of the memorable projects in my long career. Jonathan West ASC
Mr Miyagi's house from The Karate Kid was a real house in the San Fernado Valley. Not sure exactly where. When we did the sequal, we discovered that house had been torn down. Bill Cassidy, our Production Designer, recreated the house on the back lot at Warner Bros. in Burbank, CA.
@avildsen1221 Good job by rebuilding it. It gives that really authentic feeling. Last day i watched how they did that with many houses at the warner brothers ranch. The home from Lethal Weapon, National Lampoons christmas vacation, Project X, the Gremlins and a lot more are there. Film magic at its best.
I live in the UK and agree the 80s was a brilliant decade. I don't know if it's just my age but majority of today's music seems so dull and most radio channels play stuff from the past.(is that the case in the US?). Karate Kid Great Film!
I truly miss being a kid growing up during the 80s. Best time ever! I was 7 when my schools aftercare counselors took us to the movies! If I could only go back to those days! Everything was great back then! The music, movies, tv shows, cartoons, toys, arcades, the malls, no infomercials and America was so patriotic!
In KKII Mr Miyagi's house was recreated by our great production designer Bill Cassidy on the Warner Bros. lot in Burbank CA. Richard Davis, our location manager, found the original house for KKI in the San Fernando Valley. Richard showed it to me. I loved it. We rented it from the owner. Bill Cassidy designed and built the back yard. When KKII was being prepared, we discovered Mr Miyagi's house had been demolished. Turns out Mr Miyagi had a big party after the movie. You can imagine the rest.
Its absolutely surreal to see these amazing actors rehearsing these iconic scenes before they were iconic. The Karate Kid should have received more more Oscar nominations than it did. I'd love to see some rehearsal footage of The Karate Kid Part 2 because part 2 is my favorite of the series. Thank you for sharing these with us Mr. Avildsen.
Olivia Howard Yeah his performance in The Outsiders was Oscar caliber. He had more emotional scenes in that movie than anyone else in the movie and killed it each time.
Olivia Howard Hes still had an amazing career. Hes done several movies but of course The Outsiders and The Karate Kids will always be his two most memorable roles and thats something to be very proud of. Some actors don't even get that one iconic role, hes had two.
Thank you for posting this video as it's a truly awesome treat. I just want to praise you on such fantastic casting of Ralph as Daniel, Marty Kove as Reese, Pat Morita as Miyagi and best of all, Billy Zabka as Johnny. What an unbelievably fantastic film. Bravo.

Got a quetion for you sir, I have seen cast of the original Karate kid on panels always discussing the first Karate kid which is the best in the series but I have to ask, do you and Ralph Macchio hate the sequels? Particularly the third film?
I think what's most interesting here is seeing the effort Avildsen and his team put into the rehearsal, with the blocking and walkthrough, but still in a rather intimate and relaxed manner for the actors. It must have made the days go fairly smooth when shooting, compared to today's filmmaking with strict prep focusing much more on production than acting, armies of people on multiple sets, and 14-18 hour days the norm.
@@mathieujulia Yes, there are a few exceptions of course but generally movies these days lack originality and seem to be just thrown out there almost lazy if you like. The good thing about the 80s and 90s is when pratical effects were being used it seems more passion/effort was in the project. Dont get me wrong some of the CGI is outstanding these days... like in Game of Thrones but there has to be a balance and to get the best out of the actor, acting to something that is actually there rather than a screen where nothing is present makes it more authentic.
It feels like watching Karate Kid movie made by students in film school/art school. Nevertheless, I'm glad I found this video. This is the movie that made me into karate as a young lad.

So incredible for me to see this. I watched this movie so much when i was a kid. The actors did such an amazing job in this film. No question this is one of the best movies to ever be produced.
It's great when a director like Mr.Avildsen shares his home movies for the fans like this. His Rocky dvd did the same. Rocky 5 is still one if my favorites too. The family issues really worked for me. I watch KK3 often too. Not sure why some can be so critical of a movie when it's presented with great direction. Thanks for the upload.
What's amazingly funny is as much as I LOVE Shue, she talked crap about Ralph years afterward, saying ohh she could have kicked Ralph butt, lol. The script was a pure under dogg going against a savage. Ralph played the role 100% right/ He purely sold it. A young kid just trying to make his way and then had a situation. What a classic movie. This movie goes right along with the Rocky Movies. Great Job Ralph !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
This footage is absolute golddust. Amazing I actually can't stop watching it. It's bought back so many memories of my childhood. Fantastic movie. Please keep posting rehearsals shoots and interviews. The cobra Kai series is great and we can't wait for more.
Mr avildsen- you are a living legend! KK is still one of the most entertaining and fun movies ever. To this day I will flip to that channel whenever I see it on tv. Thank you.

Im now actually currently speaking to Sean Kenan AKA Mike Barnes from The Karate Kid 3 and looking to meet him and the rest if the crew. An absolute blessing and honor. Im very grateful 🙏🏿 🥋
Thank you so much much John. Your movie shaped my life. I started tae kwon doe because of the karate kid. I got my black belt 20 years ago because of you. From there, I did kick boxing and now have been training mma the past few years. I'm 40 years old. I'm going to enter a jiu jitsu tournament this october. I cant believe how much your movie impacted my life. Thank you for inspiring so many people. I wish we could see more films like yours these days.
Yes, I have. I've thought about Daniel and Ali meeting again, after all these years. And love is reborn. And then Mr Miyagi's nephew or niece shows up and we're off to a new adventure. Any takers?
Mr Avildsen, to this day, KK remains my fav movie. Ive never experienced a moment like the final kick in a movie theater ever since. You took a sold out theater and you had every single person at the edge of their seats. It also resonates because I had a similar relationship with my grandpa back then. He just passed away last year and he always, always reminded me of Mr Miyagi. I don't think I'll ever have another cinematic experience like the one that I had when I was 8, watching KK. THANK YOU
Still love coming on here once a year and viewing this rehearsal. It's like watching an extended version. I just saw the one of Rocky 5 which I kind of like better.
They did it for Halloween 2 in 1981 after a 4 year gap with the original. Also Back to the future part 2.. Great that you shared this with us.. All 3 Karate Kid movies will always have a special place in my heart. Rocky and Karate Kid, your a legend Mr Avildsen.
Is this THE John G. Avildsen?? Wow! This is such a treat! I've never seen anything like this before...and for my favorite movie series ever! Thanks so much for uploading this!
Thank you Mr. Avildsen for at least four wonderful flicks: Rocky, KK's 1 and 2, and Save the Tiger with Jack Lemon. Unfortunately, he passed away in July of 2017 so he won't hear this praise, unless they get UA-cam in heaven, but I'm sure they have much better things to do.
avildsen1221 why weren't more karate kid movies made after 3 I'd say two more sequels would have been nice after kk3. Ralph still looked very young and could still pass as a teen even in 1994. It would have been nice to see Ralph as karate kid in his early college years.

Mr. Avildsen, It is quite an honor for you to be here talking to us on UA-cam. I have been a big fan of your work since I was a little boy. This is an excellent resource for any aspiring director, actor, etc. Simply amazing.
This is amazing footage. Thanks for posting!
It’s so awesome to watch something like this and then watch the movie and see how a movie came to fruition. It’s crazy
Thanks for sharing these clips.
So incredible for me to see this. I watched this movie so much when i was a kid. The actors did such an amazing job in this film. No question this is one of the best movies to ever be produced.
Wow! As soon as Mr. Miyagi enters, the weight of the story becomes completely magnificent.
Incredibly interesting...such a great movie, as well. The 80's were a magical time to be alive.
Ralph Macchio is underrated. Great actor.
Got the pool filled up at last, California here we come!!
This is awesome. Thanks for sharing
R.I.P Mr.Avildsen.
As a kid when this movie got released on VHS I watched it about 10 times before mom had to return it Sunday night. Such a great movie and a great era.
Thank you for your kind words. Much appreciated. Always good to hear from a satisfied customer.
Mr avildsen- you are a living legend! KK is still one of the most entertaining and fun movies ever. To this day I will flip to that channel whenever I see it on tv. Thank you.
Elizabeth Shu, loved her then and love her now!
Amazing . The casting was perfect
Loving this footage from the best era ever!! TYSM avildsen1221
83, the year i was born and the franchise that inspired me to become a martial artist over nearly 30 years ago. Im now actually currently speaking to Sean Kenan AKA Mike Barnes from The Karate Kid 3 and looking to meet him and the rest if the crew. An absolute blessing and honor. Im very grateful 🙏🏿 🥋
Cobra Kai doesn't look so menacing on the bikes without their jackets.lol
also that pool at the apt was nice and clean too!
I wish we could see more films like yours these days.
the fact you can hear in his voice him start to laugh when she says “ are you on something?”
This is fantastic to see, was a huge part of my childhood having these guys as heros. Thanks for sharing.
Yes, I have. I've thought about Daniel and Ali meeting again, after all these years. And love is reborn. And then Mr Miyagi's nephew or niece shows up and we're off to a new adventure. Any takers?
Nah i want him to be with the Japanese girl Kumiko
Daniel Moore hey you never know, Season 3 of Cobra Kai he goes back to Okinawa 😉
@@danielmoore8695 KIMIKO!! KUMIKO!! KUMIKO!!
Watch Cobra Kai
@@arissag960 This is the original directors account. He passed away in 2017. You're responding to a dead man.
THANK YOU
Crazy that Ralph Macchio is 22 years old during the filming. Such a baby face. He's 62 now! Cray.
This is such great footage. This was my childhood. I watched it everyday after school on the VHS.
Still love coming on here once a year and viewing this rehearsal. It's like watching an extended version. I just saw the one of Rocky 5 which I kind of like better.
***** Sorry, I meant Rocky 5 had an alternate version. There were scenes that weren't in the movie.
i grew up on this movie..i grew up in LA Calif in the 80's..luv this move to death..thanks for this great movie
they picked such good actors/actresses. now we have “social media” stars who get movies handed to their untalented self
They did it for Halloween 2 in 1981 after a 4 year gap with the original. Also Back to the future part 2.. Great that you shared this with us.. All 3 Karate Kid movies will always have a special place in my heart. Rocky and Karate Kid, your a legend Mr Avildsen.
That's Ali with an "i", remember?
avildsen1221 😊😉
Is this THE John G. Avildsen?? Wow! This is such a treat! I've never seen anything like this before...and for my favorite movie series ever! Thanks so much for uploading this!
6:27 The STARS are beautiful!! Haha
Excellent footage! I love the karate kid, one of my favorite films
3:05 Love at first sight...
This was a gift. I am so glad this hit my feed.
Thank you for your generous comment. May I say you have excellent taste.
If you liked this, you may enjoy The Karate Kid Meets Oscar, recently posted.
For an actor, this is like finding hidden treasure. Thanks so much for sharing this and thanks for directing such a great movie.
KK3 was the toughest and the worst of the 3KKs that I made.
Pat's passing was very sad for all who knew and loved this great guy.
@@jaymatthew738 There was a fourth Karate Kid movie called The Next Karate Kid , with Pat Morita reprising his role as Mr Miyagi for a fourth time
Hikary Swank replaced Ralph Macchio as the Karate Kid
I dont remember anything past kk2
@@allprog How is tht possible, They were very popular wether you had seen them or not
wow Mr. Avildsen its an honor to be talking to u! When this movie came out I watched it EVERY DAY and I still love it to this day! I never knew these tapes existed and I thank you for uploading them! It's great to see this kind of extra footage and learn things that had confused you in the film when you saw it! Thanks again !
I notice that when Cobra Kai was playing on UA-cam they didn’t have these behind the scenes, but when Netflix took over Cobra Kai we are all of a sudden seeing behind the scenes footage of the Karate kid
These are from 1983, rehearsal scenes in essence. Macchio said in interview one can watch nearly the whole movie on Avildsen's YT channel
Mr. Avildsen,
It is quite an honor for you to be here talking to us on UA-cam. I have been a big fan of your work since I was a little boy. This film in specific was so amazing and moving when I was a kid.
I went to this apartment building on my last trip to LA, in 2004. The wooden gate has been replaced by a locked fence which looks alot like the one in this rehearsal video. What can I say, I'm a huge fan of this film still.
6:35 he's just getting riled up whilst staring at a parked truck.
Such cool rehearsal footage. Thanks for sharing this!
O mais engraçado é ver eles atuando, o william e o Ralph são ícones
Mr Avildsen,
Thank you for directing such a timeless film. Even after watching it for the nth time on video...it always makes me feel the same way I did when I watched it in the theater back in 1984.
"Bonsai!"
Almost correct. The call didn't come from my agent, rather from my friend Haim Pekelis. And you're welcome.
This is why this movie is one the best ever.... you at the detail!! Most wouldnt film basically the whole movie in rehearsal! Amazing stuff!
