  • Master Shifu. Is he one of the most overrated characters in the Kung Fu Panda franchise? I honestly think so. Look, I love the little guy, but he has no feats and constantly takes L's left and right. This dude just ain't it. And it astounds me that Dreamworks have made such a loser into such a cool character.

I feel like Oogway has a lot to play in Shifu's struggles. He wasn't a good teacher either, but in the polar opposite of the rather blunt and literal Shifu. He speaks in vague terms and riddles, and was very hands off in his training. He also is responsible for a lot more bad apples than Shifu, but that is more due to him being ancient and having interacted with so many. Oogway often didn't tell Shifu anything, and just expected him to figure it out on his own, which could be why he seems underdeveloped in Chi, inner piece, and other techniques he should be a master of but is barely even adept. And with Tai Lung, Oogway knew of Tai Lung's darkness but just never decided to step in or at least warn Shifu, only stepping in after the rampage and Shifu gets his butt handed to him. And then he picks Po as the dragon warrior, doesn't elaborate, and passes away, without ever actually educating Shifu on what he's supposed to do. Like you can say what you want about Shifu, but at least he wasn't neglectful and actually tried to be the best teacher he could despite his lacking knowledge and training.
The big difference is that we see Shifuu's kind heart, he genuinely cares about his students and wants to help them. Willing to give up his life to try and save them. Oogway... seems more like Goku. He's friendly but doesn't seem to really care about anyone besides the overall good and evil. This is most evident with Kai, who despite literally risking everything to save their life, gets banished to the shadow realm and has his entire legacy erased. I'm not justifying Kai's actions, but in his own mind he was doing the right thing. And then his closest ally, who he literally just saved the life of, decides to banish him to the afterlife without any compassion or warning. And Oogway doesn't feel any guilt or remorse over this action. This attitude carries over to many of his other known battles. He doesn't try and negotiate or sympathize, just immediately resort to fighting, and then often unfairly punishing his opponent, while also keeping them alive. Then when he passes away all of those responsibilities and targets fall on Shifu and Po, who have to try and make things right. Again, Oogway never warns them about these things.
He's a hero, but not a particularly good person.

Agree. Oogway and Shifu could've changed the fates of his students and friends. The good ones who had flaws. And the bad apples who were let a stray.
Oogway especially, could've guided them correctly, explained himself with without riddles and take action soon. So others wouldn't suffers. But he didn't. Why? Because nobody is the perfect teacher or student.
There's always going to be failures. Whether it's in reality or fiction. That's what makes the stories interesting, compelling and relatable to the audience. I would much prefer reading about a flawed teacher/student than a perfect teacher/student.

If you've ever seen a Chinese martial arts shows like "The Untamed", "Word of Honor" or "Handsome Siblings" (all currently available on Canada's Netflix), Oogway and Shifu's dynamic is likely based on the disciplined Confucian warrior meets the easygoing Taoist trope.

@@kingnamor7777 I believe in one story a famous scorpion healer ingested a substance that made them go mad and start mind controlling people with their stinger. Their stinger was broken when they tried to stab Oogway and instead hit their shell. Not Oogways fault. But, Oogway's response after defeating them was, instead of trying to help them by, I don't know, using his chi powers to restore their mind, or assist in finding a antidote, instead just banished them from the land and left them to fend for themselves. Not only did this leave them defenseless without any form of help, but also robbed the land of a extremely kind hearted and helpful healer who could save the lives of many.

I think it was a great choice to show Shifu have struggles, weaknesses, and failures. He has poured an incredible amount of effort into discipline, training, and teaching. And yet, he has deep flaws to overcome. He wants control, because he hates being useless and unable to protect what he cares about. I think that's why he didn't teach the 5 everything he taught Tai Lung. He also gets placed against pretty impossible odds, a Kung-Fu prodigy monster he created, and then Oogway's equal in combat. Po was only able to beat Kai because he got juiced up on Chi by his friends and family. I find Shifu rather relatable. It's fascinating to have a character work so hard, but still take so many Ls. Great video! The way you describe stories and characters is so funny end entertaining!

Shifu's dynamic with Oogway is rather interesting because the franchise seems to be a Western spin on the Wuxia genre where the trope of the easy-going, laid back warrior vs the rigid, disciplined one is present such as "Handsome Siblings", "Word of Honour" and "The Untamed", but of the ones I've listed the two sides tend to influence each other as opposed to one philosophy being more dominant than the other.

Alrighty-- I think it's time for us to take two steps back and view the bigger picture.
Master Shifu is not a driving force of Po's story. He is the one that tips the scales and gives Po the support and encouragement he needs to be his best self.
If he mastered all of the teachings Tai Lung performed, wouldn't he be easily corrupted by the influences of the Dragon scroll? No. Because he is a strong believer of Confucianism. The directors based Shifu and Oogway's personality of Confucianism and Taoism. Shifu has strong moral principles and has loyalties to the art of Kung Fu. Tai Lung didn't have that.
Shifu filled his head with dreams. Shifu told Tai Lung that he was destined for greatness. In Tai Lung's mind, the Dragon Scroll was the ultimate happiness. That was the end goal. He believed that he had the power to control his destiny and avoid the one Oogway saw in him.
In Tai Lung's words: "Shifu taught you well, but he didn't teach you everything." Years later, Shifu taught the five principles, loyalty, and possessing good moral compass to the five. He didn't want them to learn all-power because of what it did to Tai Lung.
Believe it or not, Shifu's entire character is not 100% on being a good teacher, but understanding and changing his ways because he's still Oogway's student.
That leads me to the lesson he learned which is to let go of the illusion of control. He accepted his role as, not a master teacher crafting his students, but a subtle force that gives his students the opportunity to accomplish great things.
Then throughout the second film, he isn't fully healed from his inner turmoil, he sits himself in a cave and understands the concept of emotional healing.
Personally, I hate KFP3 with everything inside me so I ignore whatever the flip he was doing. 🤣
There is my take on the character!

One thing I really didn't like that Shifu did when it came to Tai Lung.
Tai Lung was sent to prison for supposedly 20 years. Yet Shifu for all that time only felt sorry for Tai Lung, but NEVER made ANY effort to try to reason with him while he was in prison, WHAT THE CRAP was Shifu doing all of that time? If he cared about Tai Lung enough, he would have done everything in his power to try and reason with him instead of allowing Tai Lung's anger to grow worse than what it already was. Instead Shifu was just like "Nah... it'll be fine..." Sorry Shifu...Thats on you.

I think Shifu was grieving at how Tai Lung could have turned out so wrong when Shifu raised him with genuine love. Shifu regretted his actions and believed his love for Tai Lung was detrimental, because it made him blind to Tai Lung's violence. That's why he didn't visit him - it was a painful reminder of his mistake, and it tortured him. And Tai Lung was by no means innocent. He killed so many innocent people all because he couldn't be a Dragon Warrior. His heart and morals weren't in the right place. Shifu didn't realise that because he only raised Tai Lung with love, but discipline is needed too.
He did the opposite thing with the Furious Five, only focusing on discipline. Then when Po comes along, Shifu learns that both love (nurturing their individual potential) and discipline are needed. Honestly his growth is my favourite part of the film.

I think you’re missing a key point in his character, and it’s that he didn't truly know it was his failure, but he felt it was. That’s what held him back. It was only until Tai Lung instilled it in him that Shifu realized it was his own failure truly.

The problem with the guy is that he just doesn't stop doing bad things when people try to stop him or apologise for wronging him. He was given numerous opportunities to stop but didn't because he thought himself to be able to control destiny. He never st any point in the movie show remorse or regret for any of his actions and gaslights his own father into believimg his prison sentence which wasn't even finished by the way was his fault for not telling him no, not for the fact he was locked up for his violent crimes he committed by his own free will. He was quick to fault his masters for doing nothing yet he doesn't at all self reflect on his actions led him down a dark path. Yeah I am not the slightest bit sad about his execution. He was a fucking escape convict, and tried to get away with it, so in my eyes its his own stupidity for fighting a proclaimed legendary warrior by the creator of Kung fu Oogway, who he heavily underestimated, thinking he would win and get out alive.

I like Master Shifu because he perfectly reflects the weaknesses & flaws of humanity. And, I think he is just B-side of Po’s personality. As he can’t get through his own struggles & pains, he subconsciously projects his self-hatred & disrespect to Po. But this explains why Po could be the student who transforms him, and he could be a great teacher of Po. A true mentorship & apprenticeship should be of bilateral support & guidance. Shifu & Po is doing a great job here 😊😉

I agree about his lack of good teaching skills, but i think that people underestimate how powerful Shifu is,mostly because of plot convenience on the films. Shifu can easily overpower the Furious Five as we see when they try to attack him in training session and he dodges their attacks like its a walk on the park, and his battle against Kai would have lasted a lot longer if he didnt coincidentally noticed the Oogway amulet on Kai's neck. Also, the inner peace technique and Chi mastery dont work the same way as a conventional kung fu move. Inner peace can only be achieved by meditation or trough pain and suffering, while Chi can only be mastered if you master yourself first(also can be achieved with meditaton). Both of these techniques cant really be teached to someone, they need to learn it themselves,so Shifu wouldnt be able to teach Po or The Furious Five these technique even if he wanted to. And like someone already mentioned, the Wuxi Finger Hold wasn't actually a move,it was just a prank that teachers pulled on their students to scare them. Po was actually the one who invented the move. And to finish it,pandas dont really have any kind of supernatural ability to learn Kung Fu,only Po has it. In fact, most of the Kung Fu Po teached to the village isnt really the fighting type of Kung Fu,since the meaning of Kung Fu roughly means the mastery of a skill. Po just took the skills the pandas already had and made them master it.
This was a pretty good video!Sorry if wrote too much.

No this actually fits Shifu as a character. He failed because he thought he controlled things that were outside his grasp. He fails to let the natural talents of his students bloom. Also losing to Tai Lung is no detriment to himself. Tai Lung was more powerful than anyone in terms of hand to hand combat until maybe the third movie. Po defeats him by demoralizing him and using Chi manipulation

    • @atuwenimbewe1311
      @atuwenimbewe1311 4 місяці тому

I don't think Shifu is controlling throughout the entire narrative, he actually starts off pretty good my opinion. He finds and baby snow leopard cub and adopts him instantly like on visual contact, which even Mister Ping was hesistant to do the same with Po, it's not until after he saw the boy crying and nobody was coming for their child he adopts him. Shifu didn't like start training Tai Lung from the offset, it actually shows that he somewhat of a normal childhood. Things only began to change when Tai Lung shows a talent for kung fu. Keep in mind that Tai Lung consciously chose to attack the training dummy and afterwards looked for his father's approval. That's wasn't Shifu's doing, forcing a child to perform inorder to praise them, but Tai Lung willing seeking his father's approval. Shifu then goes on to teach Tai Lung everything he knows about Kung fu, like literally everything, because he has literally nothing to hide from a child he, in fact, raised. People say he neglected the psychological aspect of Kung fu but that's something you either innately have like Po or something you achieve only on self-reflection. Plus Shifu was like not really the spiritual guru we know him as today way back then, so to say he neglected to teach him spirituality is a bit of stretch when you consider the fact he just might not have been taught by Oogway himself.
He presents his student not as a show piece to his master but because he has actually taught him everything that he knows and believes him to be ready. Oogway just says no he got darkness in him and then leaves. No explanation at all. Now don't get twisted I know what Shifu did was wrong in hindsight, but I think the real reason why he didn't speak up to defend him was because Shifu is just used to Oogway's vague teachings not that he didn’t believe Tai Lung was capable. He just didn't know what to say inorder to change Oogway's mind right then and then so he said quiet. It's not even the first time this has happened because when Po confronts him in the movie and asks how he is going to change him into the Dragon warrior he says it straight up he doesn't know how. Tai Lung however doesn't see that way he sees this as an act of betrayal since he didn't defend his student not as Shifu literally being put on the spot in between his master and his student. What happens next his that enraged he destroys the Valley of Peace and tries to take the scroll by force. I am sorry, but how is that anyway Shifu's fault for bad parenting. Like couldn't he have just tried to take the scroll without destroying the valley or just wait for them to leave the room and grab it in secret or just confront his dad afterwards for why he didn't stand up for him. Like how is any of what Tai Lung did Shifu's fault, he didn't deny him the scroll, Oogway did, he should blame Oogway not Shifu. Shifu just becomes the target for his vengeance for doing absolutely nothing. Not something good or bad just nothing. The point I am making is, yes, Shifu didn't do what he was supposed to do in that situation but that doesn't make him responsible for a 20 year old man going on rampage after the fact. Tai Lung was old enough to make his own decisions and his actions after being rejected are on him for not taking it well. How was Shifu supposed to know he would throw tantrum, he was a fucking grown-up for god sake not a freakin child. It's for this reason he doesn't show any affection to Tigress at all because he doesn't want her end up like him. Shifu never had to adopt her too, he could have left her at the orphanage alone with no guidance but no, he instead chooses to help out a young girl control her strength so she can fit better in society. He doesn't even adopt straight away, he waits for everyone to see whether she would get adopted by someone else first before taking her with him. I don't see at any point in the story is he cruel to his children like at all. Sure he doesn't give Tigress any appreciation because look where that got him with Tai Lung. He criticises her because he doesn't want her grow arrogant and ignore her own flaws like Tai Lung. That's what just what teachers do. They don't just give out praise whenever, you actually have to achieve something worthwhile first before you get an 'I am proud of you' from your master. So no I don't think Shifu is a bad dad. He just isn't perfect, and can we blame him? Nobody is perfect especially parents and even children.

There is a Chinese idiom ' 青出於藍而勝於藍'. It can be translated as 'Green is extracted from blue and is superior to blue'. It refers to a pupil who has exceled and become better than the teacher, as Po is in some aspects.
However, this doesn't take away the credibility of the teacher. While Po's mastery of chi was beyond Shifu's, Shifu was the one to introduce him to the concept, and to encourage and challenge him to master it. Shifu knew what Po needed to learn in order to succeed in his battles. That is the role of the Master - not to hand hold all the time, but to direct, encourage and inspire the student to acheive his potential, and to be proud when the student does exactly that.

I think the other problem with Shifu on Tai Lung was that he had Promised/Guarenteed him that he Would be Dragon Warrior no matter what but to Oogway, that's Not what should be said to his students. Maybe it's true that Oogway probably should be less neutral however, I feel like all this builds to future things on bigger scales. I don't really know. As for Why Tai Lung Never withered over 20 years time? I feel as though that straightjacket held him in some suspended animation or that he was So strong and tough that he never withered. Who know really?
But for Shifu....I just feel like his Furious Five mean Nothing to him least of all his closest thing to a daughter Tigress! I even feel if Po wasn't around when the defeated Five returned, that when Tigress says "I thought we could beat him.", Shifu responds with "You were Wrong." and Kicks her in the chest! And as for the 2nd film? I really don't know How much time passed truly after Po's near death experience but I feel like aside from torture that Tigress Might have had even Worse things happen to her by Boss Wolf and Shifu isn't even concerned about Tigress' wellbeing let alone react to Tigress almost getting Killed by Shen cannonball! I wouldn't even be surprised if Shifu would use the defeated Tigress as a shield all in the Dragon Warrior's name even though Po asked for no such thing!
I just wanted to vent about Shifu and him barely caring about Tigress in all this. I myself have decided long ago that I would be Nicer to Tigress and Meaner to Shifu! You know, treat him like garbage and stuff. But you know? I Really Do wish that Shifu and Mr. Ping would have more dynamics in the films. With Ping telling Shifu like it is, they'd make Excellent Those Two Guys! And I Do like Hoffman's performance on Shifu's voice.

People need to stop pushing the narrative that if children go onto to do bad things it's not always because of bad parenting. That's like saying all the bad things people did thoughout history was because of bad parents. I don't know where people get off on making Shifu the villian of the story, where he's done the most good overall. I mean he adopts two orphan children who were abandoned by their parents both at young ages and raises them while providing food and shelter for free, no strings attached. He helps nurture multiple students into the Kung fu masters they currently are now, and is responsible for training the freaking Dragon Warrior. Nobody, not once in all of the movies has shown any genuine appreciation for him as master except for and maybe Oogway. No, they all want to receive his praise and not reciprocate at all. Shifu didn't force any of students to train in Kung fu, they all showed interest in the art first, not because he's forcing kids to train, but because these kids genuinely want to get in his good graces. He doesn't just take on any students though, they actively have show they have the potential to learn the art before he makes any sort of commitment. As for Tigress I get it, it sucks for not getting the love and care she always wanted, but at the end of day he made no promises to her, like at all. He did the bare minimum because the last time he went above and beyond for a student, they turned all the knowledge they gained from him back on him, so I think is judgement to stay impartial and objective was a smart choice from his perspective. Now talking about going above and beyond, Shifu literally raises Tai Lung as loving him completely unconditionally to the point where he actively blames himself for all of Tai Lung's wrong doings. Tai Lung never reciprocated Shifu love at all, just used him as a object to get attention from. So once that object has fulfilled it's purpose he doesn't ask what did I do wrong to not be wortg of the title of Dragon Warrior but instead destroys the valley in a fit of rage and gaslights Shifu into thinking his 20 years in solidarity confinement for his violent tenancies and crimes are Shifu's fault for raising him when nobody else gave a shit about his ass. Like seriously in what world is it okay to straight up try to kill your parent over a fucking scroll, which he says time and time again it is not his decision to give away, but Oogway's, who is in fact the creator of Kung fu in that universe. Shifu never promised Tai Lung the Dragon scroll because in the movie, Tai Lung explicitly states "you knew I was the Dragon Warrior" not You said I was going to become the dragon warrior OR You told me that the Dragon Scroll was mine. He selectively chooses his words in way that Shifu can't downright deny the accusation. That's manipulating a parent to get what you want and the fact that he is 40 year old mature adult not a child doing it is disturbing to say the least. People need to accept the fact that Tai Lung isn't some misguided child seeking his fathers approval (sure he might have started that way) but a grown ass adult who is blaming his father for his mistakes while refusing to acknowledge his own wrong doings. He wants vengeance not justice, and wants to punish his 60-70 old father for shit he himself did 20 years ago. He doesn't even engage Shifu in a civil conversation diplomatically explaining to him what Tai Lung sees in his eyes is a betrayal. He doesn't take time to self-reflect or try to do better. Shifu is the one who tries to reach out and changes his perspective on things and learns from his mistakes correcting his own shortcomings while Tai Lung doesn't at all he consider once he might be in the wrong. He never in the movie shows any kind of remorse or regret for his actions but chooses to blame Shifu for everything wrong in his life without acknowledging any of the good. Shifu is flawed character that grows from his mistakes ans experiences while becoming a better person in the process. He never blames anybody else for his shortcomings and actively chooses takes accountability for when people explain to him why he is wrong. That's called character development and Shifu has it in spades.

Ok but let's be honest, if tai lung wasn't evil he is really good at Kung Fu. And while he did become a bit rougher after him(perhaps too rough) the furious 5 still help Po a lot in the series' and movies in terms of helping training and being good friends and can still hold their own in fights when po needs em and shifu did mellow out through all of it so.

The only good thing about him is he is not evil. I however hate Shifu so much in my next fanfiction I am going to remove even that. Tai lung will be the hero and Tigress is going to be even more traumatised than in the original.
