I will always remember this movie for how simply _fun_ it was. Good jokes and acting, not too complicated yet engaging plot and even heartfelt moments. It's so nice to see you touch on yet another of those forgotten classics!

I feel like Stella got her own arc in by his movie, where she goes from being somewhat insecure because she’s a skunk, to owning it later on. It was subtle but there, and I’m glad they included that ❤️

I think this and Megamind are two very good cult classics that got overshadowed by Dreamworks other big name films.

This has always been one of my favourite movies. Its just so enjoyable! The plot is interesting, the characters are great, the jokes are funny and even with the minimal development, it's still some good development. I used to watch it all the time as a kid and never got bored of it. To this day i still have its DVD on my pile of 'frequently watched DVD's', even if I dont watch it as much, because whenever I do watch it, I love it

I shipped the cat and skunk. They are proof that you don’t have to be same species to fall in love. I mean- they can’t have kids but it works! Plus every character brought in a wonderful good time. And the bear represents the villain to teach the raccoon lessons.

This movie even managed to tackle three villains in one movie better than Spider-Man 3 did. Which is ironic, because Thomas Haden Church who plays the Verminator was in the movie.

The way I see it, it's like Shrek, minus the meme-famous and emotional drama.
Just a fun mix of toilet humor and action, with emotion sprinkled in for good measure.

I agree. This is probably one of my favorite animated films. There are just some movies that fit your vibe and you just like, and this is one of them. RJ's arc fascinated me as a kid and I loved the soundtrack from Ben Folds. It feels very sweet and genuine in it's execution when so many DreamWorks films feel more dishonest and snarky. I'm sad it never got anything more but it's one of those movies I can appreciate for what it is. Like A Bug's Life, Barnyard, Megamind and Rango, all of which I liked far more than the general public, they are good little one-offs to me that don't need a huge franchise deal. I'm okay with that and i can still go back (and not worry about them being destroyed by a future sequel).

    1. Story
Part of the reason this movie's so underrated is because it LOOKS so basic on the outside. It's very small scale. It's litcherally just animals stealing food. Yet it's so much MORE than that. It's a political commentary on human society, making fun of and criticizing capitalism and materialism. The hedge is a metaphor that represents the division between the luxurious life of us humans, and the hard life of wild animals. Not a moment of it feels like filler, but it never goes too fast either. The pacing is perfect. There's a couple overused tropes, but they're done well, I'll be getting into those later. While the story's nothing groundbreaking, it manages to deliver some very progressive takes, especially for 2006, in a fun, light-hearted way. It's not some big, grand adventure, but it didn't need to be, and Dreamworks knew that
    2. Animation/Visuals/Music
Animals and nature scenery good, humans BAD. Look at the animal's character models. The fur still holds up. If you take a look at DreamWork's own Madagascar from the year before, you can see a massive improvement in this department. They did a good job blending real animals with cartoon, but some are better than others. Ozzie and Heather, the possums, strike this balance perfectly! Whereas Stella, the skunk, looks a bit strange. Another thing you gotta love about Dreamworks is they're not afraid to give their characters some cake. Also, RJ is HOT. Ben Folds made 5 songs for this movie and they SLAP. the orchestral pieces are great too, and deliver the right emotions at the right times
    3. Humor/Comedy
It does an okay job having comedic MOMENTS, but a great job at carrying a comedic TONE throughout the film. The snarky, bold ways this movie makes fun of things is lovely. The way humans are exaggerated is hilarious. Despite this, there are a couple times that the humor is the movie's biggest flaw. 1. Slapstick. Before I continue, quick reminder: Humor's subjective, but the way certain types of humor are used can be objectively better than others. There's 2 major slapstick scenes - the "Turtle Pinball" scene, and the dog chase. In my opinion, these are THE 2 lowpoints of the whole movie. Sure they might be mildy captivating, but they come off as childish and don't match the rest of the movie's tone. 2. Crude humor - Ah, Dreamworks. Perhaps Shrek's biggest influence on culture was the explosion of crude humor in the 2000's. This was one of the last Dreamworks movies to suffer from this effect. Crude humor needs to be justified to be good. Stella's basically a walking fart joke BUT it's justified because it serves as a crucial aspect of her character arc. That's GOOD crude humor. On the other hand, having Hammy burp his alphabet for literally no reason, um... no. Showing us a naked turtle's butt, even tho turtles don't actually separate from their shells, and don't actually have cheeks... no. This is BAD crude humor. (Sidenote: I theorize that Verne is Shrek's descendent, I made a video on it). OVERALL tho, I give the humor a B
    4. Characters/V.A.
Besides their style of humor, I think making fleshed out, lovable characters is Dreamwork's specialty. This movie's no exception. Almost every character's lovable, and there are MULTIPLE character arcs. Also, their personalities actually fit their species. RJ's a raccoon, so he's naughty and cunning. Hammy's a squirrel, so he's spastic and ADHD. Ozzie's a possum so his life revolves around playing dead. Verne... is not a turtle! The best way to approach this section is to give a mini review for each character, from worst to best. Here we go:
    1. The porcupines: BORING. But they serve a role by just existing. It wouldn't quite feel the same without them
    2. Tiger: He pretty much exists just to fulfill Stella's character arc. But he's a decent character on his own
    3. Verne: He's always getting angry at RJ and the family for doing heists and stuff, portraying him as a no-fun party crasher. B/C of this, It's easy to dislike him at first. But if you realize how patient and caring he really is, you realize he's actually a pretty good character. We only see him during his moments of lashing out, but he's doing it because he genuinely cares about his family's safety. And Despite the movie's events taking place over the course of a week, he only lashes out a few times, which means he's actually pretty slow to anger too. So the fact that he comes off as a grumpy old man is unfair, but I can't say it's the movie's fault either. Also HE'S NOT A TURTLE
    4. Stella: At first, you might look at the inclusion of a skunk and be like "oh great, they just added her for fart jokes" which is... partially true. Those moments are there, but her inclusion's justified in a few ways. First, she has a fun, sassy personality. Second, her gas plays an important role in the plot. Third, being a "gross" animal is crucial to her character arc - learning to love yourself despite your flaws. The delivery's iffy, but it's only at the forefront for a short time, so it works
    5. Ozzie & Heather: Having a couple possums in the cast, we're able to get some dark humor revolving death, a plus IMO. Ozzie is comedy relief done right. They chose William Shatner, commonly picked on for over-acting... to be an over-acting possum. That's GENIUS. He's funny in a dark way, but his personality's very wholesome and sweet. His daughter Heather has the most missed opportunity of any character, all her dialogue could fit within a minute. The best way to describe her is honestly... Avril's fursona. Moderately emo and edgy, while simultaneously shy and giggly. Together these 2 share a character arc about loving your parent even if they constantly annoy you, and that's incredibly wholesome!
    6. Hammy: I said Ozzie's comedy relief done right. Hammy is comedy relief done PERFECTLY. Well... almost. He has a few burp, pee, & butt jokes. Anyway, Hammy's wacky but he never crosses the line of being annoying. He's... not the smartest, but they didn't just make him stupid either. In fact, that's his character arc. Standing up for himself and asserting that he DOES think for himself. They did a perfect job giving him a loveable personality, rather than just being a source of lazy jokes, like OTHER comedy relief characters (show Olaf). Hammy's an S tier!
Now that I covered the core animal family, let's talk about the bad guys.
    1. Vincent - He serves a believable intimidating threat, but lacks any backstory or depth, but it's not needed either
    2. Gladys - The original Karen. Seriously, this movie made in 2006 has an actual Karen, 2 references to a pandemic, AND this (Amogus reference). I'm convinced this movie actually takes place in 2020! This character's perfect. Subjectively she's an F. But you're SUPPOSED to dislike her. She's extremely exaggerated but that's what makes her SO FUN to watch
    3. The Verminator - Do I even need to explain why he's such a great character? S
And that's the review! Oh yeah, I forgot about the best character, and overall best part of the whole movie!
BBQ BARRY Oh sorry, that was a typo in my script...
RJ. He's genuinely the biggest crush I've ever had, and I'm aware that makes me a big weirdo but whatever. Putting my feelings for him aside, and NOT focusing on him physically, RJ's objectively an amazingly well written and likeable character. Get ready for a hot take - He's basically Nick Wilde but better. They both have a sarcastic, satirical, midly deadpan sense of humor. They're both overly confident. But Nick Wilde feels like he's trying to be cool at points, for RJ it just comes naturally. RJ wins in another category too (quickly). And from RJ, we get my absolute favorite aspect of the movie - his character arc. It's the found family trope. But it's done SO WELL. He's a lonely guy who realizes the meaning of life is love, NOT possessions. The absolute peak of the movie is when his character arc's completed in this one line. (but I already had that) This movie won't make you ugly cry like some Disney movies do... but the emotional moments might make your eyes swell a bit. Certainly not what you'd expect from this movie at first glance. There's also Liar Revealed, but even that's executed better than average. You won't gasp in shock, but the line delivery and animated facial expressions feel legit. You can tell Verne's shocked, and RJ looks like he really feel guilty. (Put him into S tier) RJ isn't just the best character of this movie. He's one of Dreamworks best characters of ALL TIME. This is also Bruce Willis' best performance ever.
One more point about the genius of RJ's character. He's a false protagonist - he's portrayed as the good guy we're rooting for, but in reality, he's the one who causes all the problems in the first place. So technically, this movie has FOUR VILLIANS and handles it better than some superhero movies do. Now That's impressive

"Favorite B level animation" ... yeah that pretty much sums up how I feel. It's nothing incredible but I find the whole film really enjoyable. Much moreso than a lot of movies that incorporate toilet humor. I'm no more a fan of those jokes here than in any other movie but there's greater variety than that and a lot of the other jokes land quite well.
