But the controller for the 64 is horrible for a mortal Kombat gameplay wise and timing wise. If you had the P.S. controller for the 64, then the 64 would be a lot better somehow
@@blacklegjones2567 Use a HORi 64 pad. Personally, for me the standard N64 controller is fine for this game. It's got a Great Dpad...an L & R (for BLK & RUN) and the yellow C buttons are great for HP, LP, LK, HK.
I remember spending Saturday mornings looking through the psx trilogy instruction manual and looking at all the characters while watching MK Defenders of the Realm cartoon. Sigh, we didn’t know how good we had it back then
What are you saying? PC version was on CD-ROM.There were no digital downloads back then and with shape-shifting characters like chameleon and Shang Tsung required a preselect characters of your choice to deal with the limitations of slow loading CD-ROM.
@@Final_Fantasy_7If I recall the Windows port had all the character data saved to the PC HDD & just used the CD as storage for the install & the audio for the levels was streamed off there as well, but the Windows port didn’t have to load in Shang’s morphs since all character data was on the HDD after install, not the CD. But, I could be wrong on this… it’s been at least twenty years since I tried to play Trilogy on PC natively. I never messed with the DOS port since by 1997 that was becoming increasingly irrelevant & just a nod to the few holdouts with “powerful” gaming systems that didn’t wanna deal with Windows.
Ed Boon and John Tobias had no creative control over Mortal Kombat Trilogy. That's one of the reasons why the game was rushed. Me personally I always loved the PlayStation version over the Nintendo 64 version.
Arcade MK3 and UMK3 were also rushed and broken, just not as bad as Trilogy. But at least Trilogy had more content and casual gamers back then had zero complaints about bugs and unbalanced gameplay
My friends and I all had the N64 version because in our midwest town, EVERYONE chose the N64 console over the PS1. I only met one person in my life with the PS1 in that town. It was all about drinking Surge, playing the N64 with friends, and skateboarding and rollerblading back then. LOL. We enjoyed the N64 version quite a bit but spent most of our time on Goldeneye.
@@DavidSteck-z3s Just because PS1 had more depth doesn't mean N64 was a terrible console. It had the best first person shooter of the time Goldeneye, the best snowboard game of the time 1080 which blows coolboarders out of the water, the best platformers, and it was the best party console. It was at so many parties in the 90s. To say it was terrible is subjective as you'd be disagreeing with a very very large amount of people. Twice as many people had the PS1 when it was out though (it also came out one year before the n64 so that makes sense). Is it better than the N64? You think so. I have both and play both today.
@shaun8062 n64 wasn't the worst. But PC had the lock down on first person shooters. N64 had golden eye Mario kart smash Mario 64 and that's about it. The muddy graphics and low storage kinda killed it for me and the controller. Playstation had so many groundbreaking classic that n64 can't hold a candle to. Twisted metal 2, metal gear, tekken, final fantasy 7, tenchu, residential evil , etc
As a Shang player, the loading times for the morphs on the PS1 killed it. You could select your morphs in advance for a smoother experience so at least that was a work around.
I lost count of the amount of hours I spent playing this on the PS1. I don't think my grandparents understood age ratings at all as they just got me this without any questions xD I was only 7
Many male relatives like to give "bad ass masculine" gifts to the young ones of the family. It's a healthy instinct. So, since you mentioned "grandparents", I'd assume it was probably your grandfather.
I've played both and can't complain on either. The achieved what they were made to do; entertain. While the load times were a bit annoying, I've come to use them as a moment to clear my head, relax and focus.
Back in the late 90s I had the N64 version and one of my friends has the Playstation version. After school when we'd want to have tournaments with our group of friends we'd always default to the Nintendo 64 version just because of the no loading. The only other game I can think of where we played the Nintendo 64 version over the Playstation was San Fransisco Rush.
Yup. RUSH is supreme greatness on N64. The PS1 version doesn't have the arcade physics like N64. Wasn't nearly as fun. But most games on ps1 played just as well, Tony Hawk 1, 2, and 3 made it to both systems and all played great. Tony Hawk 3 for ps1/n64 is even funner than ps2/Gamecube.
Yes. They could have used a cartridge with more memory. It was perfectly possible. Dude says in the video that the game out in "LATE" 1996. We all know, due to Christmas time, the amount of games that were rushed. Doom games for 32x and 3DO are legendary for that.
Originally, yes the N64 version was actually going to use a cartridge with more memory. A beta got leaked which has stuff like Unmasked Sub Zero, not being able to jump cancel crouch kicks, and stages like The Bank and Kahn's Arena. Sometime later in development, they canned the larger cartridge space for some reason.
In all fairness, Sony was into music technology before video games. They knew how to compress and use good sounds for their games. Nintendo shoulda joined with Sony back then, but Nintendo wanted to stick with cartridges.
@@KootenaiKing No, Nintendo didn't join Sony back then because Sony tried to F them by making the contract so that Sony would have rights over much more than Nintendo agreed to. Nintendo wanted to partner, but Sony wanted to play dirty. So Nintendo backed out at the last minute in a rude way because of how rude and cunning Sony was toward the near end of the agreement.
18:07 wow that difficulty sure ramped up real quick. Definitely true to how an arcade version would have been. Edit: load times never really bothered me, I would rather have better sound so my pick would be ps1 for that reason. Another great video, Darryl, I really look forward to your content. Still waiting on that Mythologies finale!
I had the ps1 version back in 1997 ... The cd was in my ps1 literally for over a year straight! MK Trilogy is my all time #1 favorite old school Mk game easy!
Hey buddy yet again another classic review. I played mostly on the ps1. Have to say back @ the day this was a thing I guess I didn't mind the loading time for we weren't familiar with something better than the pc version and loading times..both looks awesome and played amazing two..come today I'll pretty much would reviewed them 50/50.. evenly. Keep this stuff up my friend you rock 👊
Yeah none of us cared about loading back in the day, because I was PlayStation biased back then however I’m able to see the differences now and appreciate the strengths and weaknesses of all systems. Thanks for the support dude and comments 👊🏼
Shinnok was mentioned for the first time in a Mortal Kombat game in MKT. His first glorious (I bend the knee to Shinnok) mention comes at the ending bio of Noob Saibot
My favorite video game of all time. I played it for years on the N64 at a cousin's house until I eventually got a PlayStation one and got trilogy for it. Aside from being able to use the Boss characters I didn't see anything better about the PlayStation especially considered you could just put in the codes to unlock them on the N64 version anyway. Shao Kahn and motaro were so overpowered from what I remember
Tbh the Sega Saturn version of MK Trilogy didn't sell very well so there's very little copies of that game out in the wild. To be able to get a decent copy of that version it'll likely cost you an arm and a leg to get one. Used copy of that game cost between $90-$250 and that's just use with a scratch disc with no jewel case. If you want a complete jewel copy with manual and the game disc then the price jump to around $300-$600. If you're smart you could just buy the GOG version for $10 saving you a Nintendo Switch/PS5 value price. If you don't have enough money to get a complete in box copy but really want one you could always use those buy now pay later apps provided you don't get yourself caught in financial hardship while doing so. A lot of those apps are also very scummy and there's no guaranteed they won't screw you with their service.
allot of good memories getting up every morning to play this with my dad on the ps1 before he dropped me off at school. He's definitely the reason i still love both Mortal Kombat and Tekken as much as i do
Great video, I own both versions still. They're both fun as heck, though personally I prefer the N64 version out of all versions, it's the best for competitive play, more balanced and has Khameleon as well as the 3 on 3 exclusive mode besides the no loading issues as you've pointed out, as someone who likes using Shang that's definitely makes a difference for me.
It’s cool that we both share the same first name and the exact spelling , and we are also huge MK fans 🔥🔥🔥 thank you for your contents bro … keep it up
Another great video! I hope you're feeling better, I think this is another example of where you can't go wrong with either version you choose. They both have there strengths and weaknesses such as the audio and graphics looking more crisp and clear on the Playstation, while the n64 version is much more blurry and the audio sounds more muffled. There's also one of the worst glitches on the Playstation version where if you beat the game while playing on a Playstation 2, the game will crash before you are sent to Shao Khan's hidden treasures 😮 There's also the slower lower pitched music and no Animality theme on the Playstation version.
Thanks dude, yeah there was a lot to cover, I had meant to mention the slower audio on PS1 (if I didn’t) as well as a few other things, but I do these off the top of my head for the most part just based on my experience playing the games that I miss a lot of actual “facts” lol the game does indeed crash and glitch on both PS2 Slim and the PS3 when playing the original disc. And thanks I’m feeling better, not 100 percent yet but I will be soon. Thanks for the comment my friend 👊🏼
@BushyStallion no problem! I was super excited when I saw this video. I have very good memories of playing both versions of Mortal Kombat trilogy. I played the Nintendo 64 version first and absolutely loved it, then when I got my first Playstation 2, my dad bought a copy of the Playstation version brand new from Blockbuster, and I remember saying wow this one is basically the arcade version since all the voices and screams 😱 were in the Playstation version whereas the Nintendo 64 version was missing a few of the grunts and screams from the arcade version. Also there was a female Khameleon on the Nintendo 64, and the Playstation had a male one.
17:50 💯 I grew in the late 90s, and I miss the mellow and simplicity of not having social media where you had to step out the door and meet people because everyone was doing the same 😂
A very enjoyable video, Darryl. I played the PlayStation version growing up, and more recently the PC version released on GOG Galaxy - which is very good! An interesting thing about the N64 version is that some stages have more detail to them; The Deadpool has a red sky behind the grates, and Khan's Kave has a glowing floor and animated clouds in the background. I guess you could argue it's the more complete version in that sense. Great video as always 👍
@ZSGaming-vz2jc Pretty much the same as the PlayStation, which I understand the PC versions were ported from. The only drawback is that some stages are missing animations (acid ripples in The Deadpool, lightning in The Portal, etc).
@@lukeburton2472 Thanks interesting. Though personally I feel its looks better on the PS1 based on the PS videos I have seen - never played PS though and on modern PCs it looked a bit ordinary but was okay if I ran it in windowed mode. The PC AI of the GOG one was crazy though..took me a while to figure out the tricks and now after MKT if I play MK3 or Arcade UMK3 or MK4 it is a breeze!
@ZSGaming-vz2jc The PlayStation version looked better for sure when played on a crt back in the day! I feel older games look so much better when played on screens of the time. An interesting program to look at is Reshade; its free and applies filters to pretty much any game you assign it to. There's loads you can configure and I barely scratched the surface, but I managed to emulate scan lines and add a screen curvature effect to GOG Trilogy - it looked really good! I hear you regarding the AI. In fact, I think all versions of Trilogy are universally brutal when it comes to difficulty! I find base MK3 to be the most fair in terms of AI.
bit refers to the color depth or pixel precision. It determines the number of possible colors or shades that can be displayed per pixel, allowing for more realistic and detailed images with smoother gradients.
Hi, Darryl. Thank u for this trip down memory lane! Your review categories brought in fond memories of my fav video magazine GamePro, from back in the day! You have a new subscriber, here. Thank u, my friend.
I owned the PS1 version and still prefer it. Although I was very disappointed that it's not really compatible with the PS2 slim. Everytime you lose, you have to reset the game, if I'm remembering correctly. Great comparison video bro. 👊
It’s actually not compatible with the PS2 slim or PS3 without glitching all over the place unfortunately. Anyways bro thanks for commenting I appreciate you 👊🏼
"Bits" usually were regarding the data width of the graphic processors, but were just one part of a system's architecture. SNES had more colors than Sega Genesis, supported sound samples and had a great sound chip and many cartridges had performance enhancing chips like the FX chips. Genesis had faster processors and supported higher resolutions than SNES. It's weaknesses were fewer colors, and more difficult sound composition due to using synthesized sound. The GEMS sound driver helped, but not all composers used them well. Lots of times Genesis ports or versions were poor because they had less experienced teams, or the publisher cheapened out by only springing for smaller ROM sizes for cartridges on Genesis. Genesis was an underdog for a looong time, after all. Neither n64 or Playstation were 2D powerhouses, but for MK Trilogy the PSX was able to have more characters and cd quality sound, so it is my preferred version.
As I understand it, the N64 needed serious compression to get everything to fit and the audio suffered as a result. The PSX version had excellent audio and content, thanks to the storage space of the disc, but was infamous for loading delays, especially involving Shang Tsung morphs.
Now with what can be done with N64 roms to compile and run them smoothly, that may be the new best way to play it. That + the N64-exclusive Super Endurance mode for the towers? I know there's gotta be a person ready to show off. _For the uninitiated, Down + Start on Kano shakes the screen and activates the mode._ The Champion tower is a real challenge, and I know there's a TAS of this here on YT somewhere.
Fun fact I Alpha tested this back in the days and only 2 characters were available with super limited moves. As a teen that's all I needed! To this day it's still my favorite iteration.
You ought a versus video on Street Fighter 2 including World Warrior, Street Fighter 2 Turbo, Super Street Fighter 2 New Challengers, and other versions.
In simplest language 32-bit versus 64-bit just refers to how many lines of code the processor can chew through at once & how much memory it can address at once. Generally the N64 version is more visually impressive but it was often missing multimedia elements. Since the 5th generation had the additional X-Factor of CD versus Cartridge, there are times where the higher storage capacity of the CD based PS1 would come off superior despite having a “lesser” CPU & graphics & other times where the quicker load times in general, smoother graphics & usuall especially having access to the full content of the game without having to load things in & out from the disc into memory made for the better experience.
You're actually the first person I've seen who goes so easy on the N64's sound quality. The long and the short of it is that cartridges were significantly smaller in capacity so everything in the N64 version was severely compressed to fit. Just so you get an idea, the N64 ROM is roughly 10-12MB in size, while the PS1 ISO is around 305MBs. That's a lot of extra data to work with, which was of course reflected in the additional content and crystal clear sound quality on the PS1. Technically speaking, N64 cartridges could be manufactured with up to 64MBs capacity, but needless to say they were much more expensive for the publisher and were only reserved for really high profile titles, and that's still much less than a PS1 disc anyway. For me though, as an owner of the N64 version throughout my childhood, I always found the crap sound quality to be endearing in a way. MK Trilogy always struck me as having an oddly somber atmosphere inbetween all the goofy MK stuff, and the low quality audio somehow helped with setting that vibe. The high quality PS1 audio is almost too high quality for the setting and to me comes off as overcomposed, as stupid as that sounds. I know the PS1 audio is objectively superior, but I'd take the N64 any day of the week solely because of the grim vibe it projects on the game as a whole.
Technically, bits could refer to a few different things. 1. Address space. All the memory locations and other chips the CPU needs to be able to send/receive data and commands to/from will be mapped to this. More bits = more memory and functionality. 2. Data bus bandwidth. This is basically how big the chunks of data moving in and out of the CPU are. More bits = more data being handled. 3. Internal data type processing. This is how big the chunks of data the CPU can perform operations on are. More bits = the CPU can process larger numbers, make calculations with more precision, and get work done more efficiently. Of course, marketers just ran with More bits = more better. In reality, it depends on how well engineered the CPU, chipset, and logic board are, as well as how good the programmers and designers are.
This, 100%. And Jaguar was marketed as a 64-bit system because (a) it had two 32-bit processors (one mostly for graphics and one mostly for sound and I/O, and 32 + 32 = 64 😒, and/or (b) one specific component of one of the processors that was dedicated to data transfer was 64 bits wide. (An important component, but not the end all be all component and certainly not more important than any other.) With the exception of engineering prodigies, we were all fooled as kids...
I prefer PS1 version because i never played N64 version. Had i have known Goro and Kintaro were absent i wouldn't have liked it anyway because i was a huge Goro and Kintaro fan. And it sucks that you needed a code to play Shao Kahn and Motaro on N64. Whereas in PlayStation they were readily available.
My parents use to rent me a N64 from Block Buster Video just so I can play Mortal Kombat Trilogy since I didn’t own one but overall eventually got a Ps1 along with MK Trilogy game
Good video, I enjoy both my best friend had both. We noticed the difference PS1 more fighters more levels better music, N64 no load times 3v3, fighters looked bigger but we didn't know at the time it was zoomed in a little. Both good that's what made having different consoles unique. Now they are all just a PC now besides Nintendo
Yes I love trilogy I bought the first PS1 version then that was crashing so many times to where they came out with another version for the PS1 I bought that one also
While they're are both fun there's not much to do in MK Trilogy for the PS1 since every characters had been unlock for you from the get-go. The only other character is a randper version of the ninjas. In the N64 version you at least had to unlock most of the stuff and find other secrets. The PS1 does had more characters but most of those contents were recycled from MK3 and Ultimate MK3.
This is true.. have you ever played as the boss characters though? I found them all underwhelming and realistically have only used them a couple times over the years. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
PC Windows version is better (I know there is a DOS version for PC though) But if I have to choose, let's see the pros and cons... PROS: NINTENDO 64: * No Loading (I like that cause I like to play as Shang Tsung) * Includes The Hidden Portal Stage from MK3 and the exclusive "The Star Bridge". * It has secret fights like MK1 and MK2, including the hints before a fight. * Several ways to unlock hidden characters: Ultimate Kombat Kode, Secret Menus, a secret sequence * It has mini games included * It has "Khameleon" * It has 3vs3 mode. * Fatalities for Shao Kahn and Motaro (Not sure but I think they can also kick in the air) * Champion Endurance Mode on Choose Your Destiny Screen * Different CPU Difficulty * Being this port on a catridge, there is less risks to be damaged by using it. * More and new Shao Kahn's Treasures. * Scorpion has the "Scorpion Clones" Fatality included. * Nightwolf has a different Friendship * Shang Tsung can be fought in arcade mode. * You can "reverse" a babality turning into a kind of "Hara-Kiri" holding both kick and punch buttons. * Raiden Uppercut Fatality can be done with an alternative sequence (I think it is "Forward, Forward, Down + HP) PLAYSTATION: * More characters, including bosses plus Goro and Kintaro, 4 Klassic Versions (Kano, Kung Lao, Raiden and Jax) and Chameleon. * Bosses selectable from the beggining, no need of hidden codes. * Better sound * More music, MK2 stages tracks included. * Includes Kahn's Arena and The Bank Stages. * Rain is way easier to use than N64 version. * Bosses have more special moves * PSX Version has a cinematic intro (I don't know if Saturn version have it) * At the time it was way cheaper to buy than the N64 version (At least in my country, Chile). CONS: NINTENDO 64: * Less content * Less frames (It feels strange when you hit or kick in the air. It looks more limited in this area compared to the other versions. You can notice that watching combos, too) * The sound is lower and worse. The music sounds like midi. * The N64 controller (You can accustom to the control, but is kind of annoying at the beggining) * Shang Tsung can't morph into bosses and Baraka. PLAYSTATION * Many Loading times * The game is faster than Arcade UMK3 (That's my personal opinion, it annoys me that you need to do EVERYTHING faster when you fight) All of these facts being said, I choose N64 versions just because of no loading times, the 3vs 3 mode, the champion endurance mode and the "real trilogy vibe" by adding secrets fights, hints and mini games as prior MK Arcade games.
This was a really nice breakdown review but in all I believe PlayStation 1 to been the one on top because if it hadn't been any loading time what would be the reason then
I never got why this wasn’t in the arcade. One odd thing I recall about the 64 version: the blood from the uppercut only falls one way. 6 drops fly out from the center but the left side drops face the same direction as the right side. This is a real nitpicky weird thing it notice but I did 😂. I always preferred the N64 version just because I hated load times. I was always an arcade purist (douche) and wanted it to feel like the arcade did. So when games were halted by obvious loading, I was taken way out of it lol.
Great comment, that loading time really irked me as well, especially during latest play throughs off camera, when you’re sitting there alone just waiting, and waiting, it gets very monotonous lol good eye for detail also, thanks for the comment 👊🏼
PS1 was better for sure. That N64 controller was horrible 😂😂😂 I give Nintendo credit for trying different stuff but that was the worst controller of all time.
Love the video bro. Great breakdown of the games. The loading on PS 1 sucks yes, but I also don't like how they changed the music for some stages. Its not the music that's supposed to be playing. Even like on the sanctuary, on 64 it sounds almost like the Sega version on UMK3. And on PS1, it sounds closer to OG arcade. Some of those inconsistencies bother me as an old school MK fan.
Thank you! I agree with your comments about the music, to me the games did feel a little rushed, like something was slightly off, but overall still amazing games in my opinion. I appreciate the comment 👊🏼
For me, I wish they give this game an HD update and keep everything else in tact.. I would buy it immediately for my Switch and Xbox Series X.. Edited: All versions have cross-play and cross progression..
Just a heads up, there was a 1997 PC version which was a port of the playstation version, AND that PC version got re-realsed on GoG in 2022! to run on modern Windows 7,8,10,11 etc
I like the Nintendo 64 mortal Kombat trilogy because I play it the most I had best time playing it and it was awesome the mortal Kombat trilogy for Nintendo 64 got more character and good old time for me to play mortal Kombat trilogy for Nintendo64 😁😄
I would say N64 because of the loading times. But one thing i dont get why is there like multiple arms and legs for the characters when getting blown up?
I could never pull off fatalities in any MK game, so this one was a godsend. I always used to use the one button fatality code, which I still remember; on Konfigure, hold up, R1, L1, R2 and L2.
I always looked at this game as the MK: Armageddon of the 1990s. The only thing MK: Trilogy is lacking is almost every Kombatant having MKI, II & 3 incarnations of themselves to select from. (I would love to see an MK3 version of Raiden)
That's the one thing I would had love MK Trilogy to do cause they did it for Johnny Cage. When I first play MK Trilogy, I saw the new Johnny Cage sprite, I was surprise then I saw Raiden and Baraka and realize both are still in their MKII sprite, I was very disappointed. They could had given both of them newer up to date sprite too. The thing is if you put MK Trilogy Johnny Cage with the MK3 roster, he'll fit right in. There aren't anything weird about him but when you put MKII sprite Raiden and Baraka with the rest of the other roster they don't fit in at all. Their sprites are larger, had different details and resolutions and their animation feel jank cause they are older sprite.
I have both versions and play them quite a bit. Besides the audio and video quality being slightly different. The only animation difference between the two is in Shao Khans lair. On the N64 there's a blue sky with clouds moving outside the door. On the PS1 the clouds are gone but the edges of the doorway still have a bluish white outline.
I still have Mortal Kombat 3 (not Ultimate) for the SNES and Mortal Kombat Trilogy for the N64. I don't know a few characters were missing from the N64's Trilogy. The SNES Mortal Kombat 3 was really good but the #1 flaw of the game was the AI opponent was BRUTAL! Even in the easy setting the cpu opponent was quicker than past MK games. I because quicker myself to defeat SNES MK3. All in all love both, abit more to Trilogy N64.
I really like the audio on the Playstation, I could even deal with the loading. Also I think you can sum up the controls based on the controller you prefer. One of the things that kept me from playing MKT is I was told a lot of the fatalities didn't work. Was never sure if that was true or not.
when i was a kid, the loading time was a bfd. never had to deal with it before, then all of a sudden, minute load times. you kinda brushed it off as "oh, you were young you didn't notice" no man, i noticed.
Great video. I like when you do the OFFICIAL games. That being said, question here: Why was the N64 on CRT but not PS? I don't want to be disrespectful or anything like that, but the PS version looked better than it actually is because it was not on CRT like the N64 version. (Especially if emulation is being used.) Also, I could have sworn the N64 version had bigger characters; I could be wrong. You had me laughing hard with the "atrocious load times". 😂🤣
I have the most experience with the PSX version. The only thing I don’t really like is the long load times but that’s with any original PlayStation game. On N64 my cousin had it and since I wasn’t familiar with the controller layout I didn’t find it much fun. I just can’t get over the compressed sounding audio and voices on the N64 and the music not playing on the correct stage.
In the N64 version you get an extra arena called The Star Bridge, which is just the Pit II with a starry sky background. You also get the Hidden Portal and Noob's Dorfen stages (with a cheat code) from MK3. The PS1 version lacks all of these stages. However the PS1 version has Kahn's Arena and The Bank, which the N64 version is lacking. Also the N64 version looks a good bit worse in comparison, mainly due to the missing frames of animation. Even Sega had more frames!
Talking about sounds, both versions lacks many bgms. n64 has lo quality sounds and bgms. It has all the sounds and speeches but has poor quality. And has no mk2 and1 bgms. Where as. Psx has good cd quality bgms, has mk2 stages bgms. But lacks the folowing. listen it carefully when selecting towers. The (dun) bgm is not present. Rround1 2 3 etc sounds are missing. Fight, superb, wel done, finish him/her, and hit sounds quality is poor plus the landing/running sounds are missing. End of round and when finish him/her moments, the specific stage bgms are missing. All the bgms are slower then the original. There are many other sound errors which I don't remember.
The PlayStation version is more complete, more characters, more music etc. the only strike against it was the loading time.
I hear Shang Tsung is basically unplayable on the PS version because of loading times for his morphs.
Well remember the 64 had mermory limitations
The PC version is the best one because you get the same content as the PS1 version and no loading times as the N64 version.
I pick n64. The playstation version murders you after the second fight.
@@Patrick19833 Incorrect. PS1 is better. On PC acid pool stage is not even animated.
PSX version for sheer content.
N64 version for core gameplay.
In a Nutshell, yes absolutely.

Agreed.
But the controller for the 64 is horrible for a mortal Kombat gameplay wise and timing wise. If you had the P.S. controller for the 64, then the 64 would be a lot better somehow

What town?
But n64 was a terrible console. Playstation had way more depth
@shaun8062 it's subjective, releasing a console with one game is terrible
As a Shang player, the loading times for the morphs on the PS1 killed it. You could select your morphs in advance for a smoother experience so at least that was a work around.
And he was also eliminated from the towers. You never had to fight him in the CD versions
@@UnBuenJugador You know, I don’t think I ever noticed that 👍🏻
Yeah the load times is the only thing I hate about the PS1 version
I lost count of the amount of hours I spent playing this on the PS1. I don't think my grandparents understood age ratings at all as they just got me this without any questions xD I was only 7
Many male relatives like to give "bad ass masculine" gifts to the young ones of the family. It's a healthy instinct. So, since you mentioned "grandparents", I'd assume it was probably your grandfather.
Your grandparents were right to buy you this kind of game. I'm sure you turned out way better than those morons who grew up playing Mario and stuff.
Ahh at 7 this game would’ve been INSANE! Lol awesome memory thanks for sharing that 👊🏼
I was 5-6 of age when I got it
MKT for PS1 also has classic MK1 Kano, and classic MK2 Jax. Pressing select over the characters
You having my three favorite childhood arcade cabinets behind you just made my day!
I've played both and can't complain on either. The achieved what they were made to do; entertain.
While the load times were a bit annoying, I've come to use them as a moment to clear my head, relax and focus.
N64 3v3 tournaments are really fun to watch on N64.
This is true 👊🏼
PS1 was so awesome. The load times just killed me.
I got UMK3 on Sega Saturn, and the load times were horrendous but it looked fantastic.
I’ve never tried that version. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
I played it on Sega too I didn't get to try it on the other 2 consoles
@@BushyStallionumk3 sega Saturn woo was the arcade in home but the only bad point load times
Saturn version of Trilogy had noticeably faster loading times than the PS1 version; and had all of the same content as the PS1 version.
The N64 version should've been better. Feels like it was rushed.
Yes it was
@@BleuChickenno way are u serious?
It could have been as it was released around Christmas time, I think they could’ve added more.
I played the HELL out of the N64 version. It was the 2nd game I got for my N64. Loved it
I played both growing up but the n64 playing the wrong music in almost every level really bugs me.
And it sounded awful. Vocal chanting was flutes 😂
@@PixelsNcreatureS TOTALLY!!!!! 🤣🤣🤣🤣❤️💯
In general I loathed the sound design, especially compared to psx.
I appreciate that Jon 👊🏼 Mythologies finale coming soon!
I had the ps1 version back in 1997 ... The cd was in my ps1 literally for over a year straight! MK Trilogy is my all time #1 favorite old school Mk game easy!
One thing to note on the PSX's MKT music: it was written to the disc as 48000Hz audio, but played back at 44100Hz, making it slower and lower-pitched.
load time ?? The original PlayStation had games that took FOREVER to load in between levels. The N64 had almost zero loading time
Excellent video!
Hope you can also compare Saturn and PC ports too (although I think PC would stomp the other 3 ports)
Shao Kahn and motaro were so overpowered from what I remember
i like both version alot but the ps1 version is better execpt for the load times
👊🏼
@@BushyStallion also the sound on the ps1 is better but d@mnit I love the n64 version too . Saturn version is about the same as the ps1 version
7:26 This is the classic Friday night sleepover with pizza rolls set up. Just the TV and the console on the side.
I had many of those when I was younger, good memories 🙏🏽
I love your history and knowledge of Mortal Kombat ❤
Mortal Kombat Trilogy was also on Sega Saturn and other platforms. Review the Saturn version of MKT.
He's definitely the reason i still love both Mortal Kombat and Tekken as much as i do
Loading for the options menu…loading for the character select screen…brutal! Can’t believe it used to be normal!
Yay! a real comparison! Wish you'd worked in the Saturn version of Mortal Kombat Trilogy into this comparison.
PS1 and Saturn practically were the same (except few minor changes in sound and transparency effects)
It’s cool that we both share the same first name and the exact spelling , and we are also huge MK fans 🔥🔥🔥 thank you for your contents bro … keep it up
Darryl with TWO r’s lol there is no other spelling as far as I’m concerned lol thanks for the comment my friend 👊🏼
Good to see you're better and personally i only played the PS1 version
17:50 💯 I grew in the late 90s, and I miss the mellow and simplicity of not having social media where you had to step out the door and meet people because everyone was doing the same 😂
If you miss this, too bad you weren’t around in the 80’s lol we had to build houses out of dirt and sticks because we were all cavemen 😂
@BushyStallion if you ask kids, they'll think the world was black and white 😂
A very enjoyable video, Darryl. I played the PlayStation version growing up, and more recently the PC version released on GOG Galaxy - which is very good! An interesting thing about the N64 version is that some stages have more detail to them; The Deadpool has a red sky behind the grates, and Khan's Kave has a glowing floor and animated clouds in the background. I guess you could argue it's the more complete version in that sense. Great video as always 👍
How did you find the graphics on the GOG version
I appreciate the comment Luke, good eye for detail 👊🏼
bit refers to the color depth or pixel precision.

Saturn version when ???
The Saturn version came out a year later I tried to have my mom get it but she said no I ended getting NBA Live 98 instead.
@@kingdjack6same here my friend was selling mk trilogy but my bro wanted Mario 64 so she got Mario 😂 Mario 64 is still cool so I didn’t complain
I never had a Saturn growing up, might be a while as the Saturn and especially a copy of Trilogy on there are both quite expensive. Hopefully soon 👊🏼
I used to love this game back in the day!
Yeah, the compressed sounding music especially bugged me , doesn't sound very crisp
@@jmac79ers I once heard someone describe it as listening to someone play Mortal Kombat in the next room.
Hey man… would love to see some KI content.. memories of the arcade version etc. keep up the awesome videos man 👍👍
In simplest language 32-bit versus 64-bit just refers to how many lines of code the processor can chew through at once & how much memory it can address at once.
(An important component, but not the end all be all component and certainly not more important than any other.)
With the exception of engineering prodigies, we were all fooled as kids...
@@MrCHUP0N
Didn't the Turbografx also do some shady math, claiming to be "16-bit"?
@@jwill7998 yup! Something to the effect of, the graphics processor was 16-bit but the CPU was still 8-bit.
I own the official guide book. Very cool stuff. Got Mkt when it was released back then. Man .. these times.
Those old Strategy guides are awesome! They certainly were “the good old days” 👊🏼
MK Trilogy is the game that got me into MK. I grew up playing it right around when Deadly Alliance came out.
always a cozy time on this channel
Thanks dude 👊🏼
The content, music, and controller were better on the PS1. The load times were a nightmare.
I'm 39 years old and the load times never bothered me and it still doesn't
Yes I love trilogy I bought the first PS1 version then that was crashing so many times to where they came out with another version for the PS1 I bought that one also
While they're are both fun there's not much to do in MK Trilogy for the PS1 since every characters had been unlock for you from the get-go. The only other character is a randper version of the ninjas. In the N64 version you at least had to unlock most of the stuff and find other secrets. The PS1 does had more characters but most of those contents were recycled from MK3 and Ultimate MK3.
The ps1 version you can play as Goro, Kintaro, Motaro and Shao Kahn
The n64 version you can only play as Motaro and Shao Kahn
This is true.. have you ever played as the boss characters though? I found them all underwhelming and realistically have only used them a couple times over the years. Thanks for the comment 👊🏼
I love Trilogy on PS1 not N64 and MK Trilogy was an also arcade prototype
PC Windows version is better (I know there is a DOS version for PC though)
But if I have to choose, let's see the pros and cons...
PROS:
NINTENDO 64:
* No Loading (I like that cause I like to play as Shang Tsung)
* Includes The Hidden Portal Stage from MK3 and the exclusive "The Star Bridge".
* It has secret fights like MK1 and MK2, including the hints before a fight.
* Several ways to unlock hidden characters: Ultimate Kombat Kode, Secret Menus, a secret sequence
* It has mini games included
* It has "Khameleon"
* It has 3vs3 mode.
* Fatalities for Shao Kahn and Motaro (Not sure but I think they can also kick in the air)
* Champion Endurance Mode on Choose Your Destiny Screen
* Different CPU Difficulty
* Being this port on a catridge, there is less risks to be damaged by using it.
* More and new Shao Kahn's Treasures.
* Scorpion has the "Scorpion Clones" Fatality included.
* Nightwolf has a different Friendship
* Shang Tsung can be fought in arcade mode.
* You can "reverse" a babality turning into a kind of "Hara-Kiri" holding both kick and punch buttons.
* Raiden Uppercut Fatality can be done with an alternative sequence (I think it is "Forward, Forward, Down + HP)
PLAYSTATION:
* More characters, including bosses plus Goro and Kintaro, 4 Klassic Versions (Kano, Kung Lao, Raiden and Jax) and Chameleon.
* Bosses selectable from the beggining, no need of hidden codes.
* Better sound
* More music, MK2 stages tracks included.
* Includes Kahn's Arena and The Bank Stages.
* Rain is way easier to use than N64 version.
* Bosses have more special moves
* PSX Version has a cinematic intro (I don't know if Saturn version have it)
* At the time it was way cheaper to buy than the N64 version (At least in my country, Chile).
CONS:
NINTENDO 64:
* Less content
* Less frames (It feels strange when you hit or kick in the air. It looks more limited in this area compared to the other versions. You can notice that watching combos, too)
* The sound is lower and worse. The music sounds like midi.
* The N64 controller (You can accustom to the control, but is kind of annoying at the beggining)
* Shang Tsung can't morph into bosses and Baraka.
PLAYSTATION
* Many Loading times
* The game is faster than Arcade UMK3 (That's my personal opinion, it annoys me that you need to do EVERYTHING faster when you fight)
All of these facts being said, I choose N64 versions just because of no loading times, the 3vs 3 mode, the champion endurance mode and the "real trilogy vibe" by adding secrets fights, hints and mini games as prior MK Arcade games.
You should do MK4 for both platforms... and MKM: Sub-Zero
Mk trilogy is the greatest mk of all time! I only played the PS1 version tho.
That's the only one you needed to play even though they dropped two different versions
Speak for yourself, Darryl. My (then) 15 year-old ass was in the biggest rush ever. To play any new MK game, that is.
If you didn’t play this high with your buddies you missed out
PS1 was better for sure. That N64 controller was horrible 😂😂😂 I give Nintendo credit for trying different stuff but that was the worst controller of all time.
Also on the PS1 version, when 1-Button Fatalities were enabled, sometimes the game would "glitch" and the fatality wouldn't occur.
Very in-depth assessments! Great video 👍🤙
Thank you! I appreciate it 🙏🏽👊🏼
PSX had a better selection listing, as for the UMK3 genisis had the most out of that version including the brutalitys.
I don’t know why it bugs me that the announcer does not say “Round 1” in the PS one version. Feels incomplete
I like the Ps1 version better, more characters, and no having to unlock them. Better controler, and sound.
I like how the announcer sounds out in the Ps1 version compared to the n64 version
ps1 had mk2 kung lao and jax, and mk1 raiden and kano. you had to press select button while your cursor was highlighting the characters.
I really wish that they would rerelease these games for Switch and PlayStation 5. I’d buy both versions.
For me, I wish they give this game an HD update and keep everything else in tact.. I would buy it immediately for my Switch and Xbox Series X..
Edited: All versions have cross-play and cross progression..
I had the 64 version absolutely loved it
Just a heads up, there was a 1997 PC version which was a port of the playstation version, AND that PC version got re-realsed on GoG in 2022! to run on modern Windows 7,8,10,11 etc
The damn sho did get re-released and it was cheap too cheap as in price gameplay was great
I like the Nintendo 64 mortal Kombat trilogy because I play it the most I had best time playing it and it was awesome the mortal Kombat trilogy for Nintendo 64 got more character and good old time for me to play mortal Kombat trilogy for Nintendo64 😁😄
Thanks for the comment Starlight sounds like you had a great time playing MK Trilogy on the N64, do you still own it and play it?
@@BushyStallion hmmm I don't think I don't got it anymore I only got pokemon for Nintendo 64 for sure
I would say N64 because of the loading times. But one thing i dont get why is there like multiple arms and legs for the characters when getting blown up?
That was one of my largest complaints for MK3 in general.
Lol a question we’ve all asked since MK3. Why indeed lol thanks for the comment 🙏🏽
That didn't bother me as much as the multiple skulls and rib cages
I could never pull off fatalities in any MK game, so this one was a godsend. I always used to use the one button fatality code, which I still remember; on Konfigure, hold up, R1, L1, R2 and L2.
That's literally it.
That’s awesome 👊🏼
The loading kills the PS1 version, although it's superior.
N64 version was better no doubt the only sucky thing was the music just blast some korn on the background and you good
Ahhh yes Korn and MK was definitely a thing in the 90’s! This is true, great comment my friend 👊🏼
What about the Saturn version? That version might be the best one. As long as it’s being played on a CRT. Show Sega some love 💙
It is.
PS1 for me!I still have both, but never liked N64's version!
Bigger the bits, better the graphics!!!
Lol right?
Love it had both versions. My main one was the PS1 version but both had their own unique qualities 👍
Thanks for the comment 👊🏼 there’s definitely a few I couldn’t get to work for the life of me as well.
when i was a kid, the loading time was a bfd. never had to deal with it before, then all of a sudden, minute load times. you kinda brushed it off as "oh, you were young you didn't notice" no man, i noticed.
PS one version was better. tho I've never seen it on The N64 version tho, but I grew up on the ps one.
Great video. I like when you do the OFFICIAL games. That being said, question here:
Why was the N64 on CRT but not PS?
