    When we left off in the previous episode, I’d just discovered major subfloor issues -- powderpost beetles, and fungus growing out of the floorboards under the window. Oh, and to clarify, we’ll be using the old hardwood floor as a subfloor over which we install the new maple hardwood flooring. And since we’re using the old hardwood floor as a subfloor, we’ll be installing the new hardwood floor diagonally, so that the new floorboards run across the old floorboards (running the new floorboards in the same direction could lead to issues down the road).
    But before we actually install the nail-down hardwood flooring, I had to replace the damaged subfloor, and treat the new hardwood floors to prevent further powderpost beetle damage. I also discovered a major structural framing issue with the floor, and redid the framing in that area. Then, finally, we start to install the hardwood floor in the living room. I used an Ecocork Foam Underlayment and 5” wide maple hardwood flooring for the living room floor.

      fill in the gap around the stairs with epoxy mixed with a glow in the dark powder of your choice. finish it off by sanding it smooth where the epoxy and flooring meet. It would look cool seeing that around the base of the stairs.

    • @Zalex612
      @Zalex612 2 роки тому +16

      One thing to be aware of with metl casting is galvanic corrosion from dissimilar metals. You'd definitely want a barrier, probably fiberglass, that would protect both the stairs and the cast parts. Personally I think a 3D printed or wood filler with hand crafted metal skins would work well enough and look just as good while not requiring a forge and costing a bit less.

    One interesting way you could cover up those spaces around the stairs is with 3D printing. Print out something that fits in there, give it a bit of shape, simple shapes could work, like a gentle incline maybe? Sand it out to make it smooth, and paint it to match the floor. Benefit of 3D printing it is that you could print out something exactly for that space, and make it (mostly) cheap to redo it if needed.

    Wild idea for the stair trim question while totally keeping with the Modustrial aesthetic... 3d prints some molds that wrap around the areas you want to cover, lay in some LED or fiber optic lights and pour a cool translucent resin color into it. I'm not sure if I'm picturing it right, but what I'm picturing looks cool! However, the gaps around the stairs are expansion gaps in case the floor moves, so I don't think you can fill them with resin.
      Or were you talking about the resin-part going on top of the wood, similarly to how a baseboard would work?

    • @wookieenookiee6696

      @@simonro9168 Very much like a baseboard would hide that gap. Enough of an overhand to accomplish that, while keeping off the floor to allow expansion and natural movement. Basically having the resin attach to the metal part of the stairs while acting as a cover for the 3/4" gap

I would silicone them down and also use some pin nails to hold them in place. none of that will hurt the expansion of your 3/4 planks and it will blend right in with the floor. hope that helps ya and keep up the good work!

    In Holland/the Netherlands we use “platte plinten” it is a small piece of trim that is specially made for detailing around structures when laying down wood flooring!
    You can use it around the stairs, if you don’t have any available. Just use a router around the edges of a bord and cut it just to 1 inch width and use it as a “platte plint”
    Good luck!

    For the stairs, I'd recommend just taking angle iron like you said, and welding it in as trim. I think it would look great, personally.

    Would make trim for the stair-posts from steel plate in two parts with one seem in the middle. Make a template from cardboard and transfer it 1/4 inch thick steel plate. It's weight should hold it in place and otherwise you could use the space underneath for a magnet to hold the two pieces together. Goes well with the industrial-look; better than 3d-printed stuff.

    To cover the flooring I would use pieces of wrought iron that were shaped to look like the base of the post. I assume you are gonna paint that staircase after the reno is done anyway. Something that is maybe build to match the shape of top of the post.

    steel angle iron is how I would do it, maybe gussy it up by welding a slope across the hypotenuse of the angles basically making a steel trim or fillet. Its a opportunity to make a really neat decorative detail, it you me black smith-ed, or creative weld bead, it is definitely a excuse to do something there.

    for the stairs cutout, whatever you do, do something that you can paint with glow in the dark paint. That area looks like it relies heavily on natural light, and it'd be nice to be able to pick out where the bottom of the stairs is at night without needing to turn on a light.

    You could try cornice trim usually used on the top edge of a wall, this may work and you could always paint it a similar colour to the floorboards.

  • @Scrial
    @Scrial 2 роки тому +1

    You could use an angle iron which is low height and a bit longer in the other direction, then weld some big bold heads onto it to make it look like it's bolted to the floor. If that's the aesthetic you're going for.

    For the sections of the flooring where they meet up with the staircase:
    My suggestion is to cut the new flooring back (anywhere from 3" up to 8" - depending on how much steep you want the angle) from the post/rail/panels on the side of the stairs, then use a router to cut back the original flooring on the outside edge of the metal where it's attached to the original floor (at least 0.5" to 1.5" max).
    You will create a 'step/slope down' to the original floor level by adding an angled/sloped piece of trim that will be flush/inset @ bottom (aka the original floor) & meet up with the new flooring @ the top. The inset will slope on an angle towards the staircase with the thinnest part being flush/inset into the original floor. The steepness of the angle will depend on how far back you start the match up with the new floor. I think it's probably going to be about a 3-5" for a 45 degree angle. You can use a contrasting color, match the wrought iron, &/or match the new flooring (& you could change the color depending on where it's at & how visible/invisible you want it to be).
    Think of your new floor as the outside rail of a cabinet door & the original floor being the inset panel. You are adding a piece of trim to blend the 2 pieces together & eliminate any edges.
    I can't see any way to 'trim it out' in a typical 'new flooring way' that wouldn't look a bit odd IMO. I can send you a sketch for clarification if my description wasn't clear enough.

    Just some feedback. (not meaning to offend or anything) I personally did not care too much for the new effects and styles being added. It felt like it was trying a bit too hard to be quirky. It is also a lot of extra work that I don't think adds too much extra to justify it. I really like this channel being the rustic building style of a guy chasing his dreams and escaping the rat race. I prefer it more simple like that personally - there are too many "influencer" style, over produced videos on the internet, but those channels are lacking any real soul in their content.

      @@geegurl25 I am happy for you. I guess I have been watching since the Star Wars cement table build, so a bit before the channel got as big as it is now. So I have fallen in love with a particular style that these videos are made. I am just not too keen on the direction change. It's more of a personal choice. I just hope the channel sticks to it's roots. It's not an "influencer" channel, its a building and furniture making channel (with a bit of art and music).
      But again... That is my personal preference. But I don't watch "influencer" channels. And my suggestions are not fact or gospel. Just feedback from a long time viewer of the channel.

    For the stair intersection with the board, get an iron worker to build you some cast iron shoe plates at 45° to the floor so that they wrap around the stair leg. Would give it a good industrial look and also cover the expansion gaps nicely and mix in with the existing stairs

    I think you're on the right track with your angle iron idea for the stairs. Weld it to the stairs for a fastener free finish and paint it to match the rest of the frame. If and when you need to redo the floors you can slide them in and out from under the bottom of the piece.
