I’m here because you played with JV at the Austin Blues Festival (invited her to play with you), but I subscribed because you’re awesome. Jackie keeps us hearing what she’s into. It’s greatness.
I saw Robert and his band live at Interlochen. What an amazing entertainer and his family band was equally amazing. I would go again, given the opportunity. And I should tell you, he is a wonderful person. He lives his faith.
I'm so happy I got to see this video suggested to me at 2:30am so I can spend the rest of the middle of the night trying to find more of him playing steel guitar. I mean, what else would I be doing than discovering the future of the blues.
Good God this dude is a bad ass. I love what he had done with the pedal steel. I have never seen it outside of a country context where it's beautiful but used in such a limited context by most. I always thought of it as more of a color instrument than a serious lead or rhythm instrument. It's requires limb and digit independence. You can't get vibrato on a piano or multiple notes in the same octave which you can on a pedal steel.
Also, Rogue lapsteels are under $100 at Musicians Friend, etc. They sound great and both the rez and the lapsteel are great as t for working on open tunings
I love seeing young cats keeping blues alive and evolving. He has to be written into the music history as a serious pioneer. Was there an serious pedal steel blues virtuoso or even player before Randolph. Assuming no, he not only is an original but he also tears it up with clean, fluid and fast technique with the chops of Derick Trucks, SRV, Sonny Landreth, Joe Bonanassa with the influence of Delta Blues greats like Robert Johnson, Son House, Muddy Waters (who is also associated with Chicago style as he lived outside Chicago and played Checkerboard lounge for years) and Chicago cats like BB King Otis Rush, Hound Dog Taylor, Buddy Guy, Mike Bloomfield, Lonnie Brooks, John Lee Hooker, Son Seals, Robert Cray Memphis players like Albert King, Texas cats with the fast licks, raunchier tone boogie rhythms like Billy Gibbons, Lightning Hopkins, Albert Collins, Gatemouth Brown, Johny Winter (and of course the aforementioned SRV who is one of his biggest influences), British blues rock influence like Clapton, Peter Green, Jeff Beck, Gary Moore, Paul Kosoff, southern blues rock like Duane Allman, Dickey Betts, Warren Haynes, Trucks before him
Years ago, a Nashville player told me that the next big thing in pedal steels was a 12-string "universal" tuning. Is this what Robert has for his setup?
Omg at 1:50 it actually sounds like a female voice singing ahhhs holy cow thats the closest ive ever heard to a real voice....and thats why i love the slide guitar to be able to be soooo vocal with an instrument

Buy a nice resonator for slide, first. See how you like it, then make the the jump.
deep shoes to fill but you should 100% do it
Also, Rogue lapsteels are under $100 at Musicians Friend, etc. They sound great and both the rez and the lapsteel are great as t for working on open tunings
Save $10,000 and you can get after it.
