This was tremendously helpful, as I am about to embark on this very procedure on my old Harley FX. I found this video in the Nick of time. Thank you for posting, and doing such a fine job of it! Well done.
Del, until I watched this video I was pretty sure that swing arm bearing replacement was a job for a shop or an advanced and highly experienced home mechanic. You have shown all the steps in a clearly and thoroughly and have explained the process eloquently - you truly have a talent for this. Mustn't forget Penny - her camera work is awesome!
Hi John, Thank you so much for your very kind words, and im really glad the video could help you out... always feel free to drop us a line if you get stuck, and maybe we could help... Oh and yes, Penny makes me look good, thats for sure..lol.. Take care and have a great week.. D&Px
Super great video. Super Well explained as always n great camera work. Spot on in wat u say. Learnt so much from u in this and many of your other videos too. Thanks Del & Penny. 👍👍👍🤗🤗🤗😘
The worst swinging arm I ever worked on was from a BMW K100 with it combined swinging arm/shaftdrive. UA-cam recommended video. Love the wealth of knowledge and the timeless tunes 😊
Thanks again for the informative vid , with out kissing arse you really do come across in an easy to follow and understandable manner . local Harley dealer wanted over 1k to change swing arm bushes/bearings on my bike .Thanks to your vids/chan i feel more confident in tackling the jobs myself .Just got to teach the wife now that its important to have a cuppa on the hr while working on my bike !!!!! if you could make that vid you will be a very rich man , Ride Safe
Hey buddy, good call on the tea...! There are a couple of options, one is a intercom to the kitchen, but the responses are often mixed lol - the other is a kettle in the garage, but I'd never get on with anything ! Glad you enjoyed the video, thanks for watching mate...
Thanks Del . i did fit a door bell to the kitchen so when i fancied a cuppa i would just Ding dong , worked well once but have to conceed ,the dentistry work which then ensued cost way to much !
Thank god. You're the first person I watched do it with out a specialty tool. This is my first bearing change, and I was really nervous to do it. After this, I feel a little more confident.
I am new to motorcycle repair and your video has saved my swing arm as I would have used a drift and hammered it out... really like the time you took and love your bearing press. Thank you.
Nicely done, Del. Well explained, plenty of detail with zero blabber, great camera work, and great instruction. Thanks for putting the effort into this one and keep them coming.
I personally put this among one of your top videos Dell, where some jobs were a bit taboo to tackle for an amateur, thank you both for showing a well explained and clear video.......
Thank you my friend, that is very kind... We are hoping that this will become a long term reference video like a few of the others like the chain riveter video, the fork seals video and many more that are still being used for inspiration years after we posted them.. Thanks again and take care.. del.
Huge respect on that one Del , both the job and Penny’s camera work faultless .👍🏻 . don’t imagine for a minute that I am ever going to do that myself but a great insight as to what can be done at home given the right amount space tools and knowledge.
Just the fact you save us from pinching our palms on the hammer slide is worth watching you. Seriously, appreciate the guidance on the use of your bearing puller.
I came here to learn this for my Honda Rancher ATV this is a very highly professional video and thank you for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience and explaining things along the way I really appreciate this video
Many many thanks for the great video Del and Pen. This was a special one for sure. I can’t imagine this was an easy one to film or edit. It came out great so thank you for your hard work and dedication. The only bearings I was familiar with until now was the ones I changed on my old skateboard circa 1985 lol. Now I know much more.....thank you.
Dai, I just knew you were a skater boy lol - Seriously, thanks mate, it was a great fun video to make, and was really glad to get the bearing set replaced and move past that milestone in the build... 12degrees all this week so far, and raining every day (so washing all the salt away!), maybe get out for a ride on Sunday - how about you?? Love to you all, catch ya very soon, D&Px
Moonfleet41 won’t be able to ride this weekend unfortunately as we’re planning to make another UA-cam video, “how to shuck a giant oyster”. Although I’d much rather be riding my RSV4, that’s for sure. All good here mate, hope you and Penny are well and enjoy your Sunday ride!!! Give a massive bear hug to the Penstar from us x
Hi Del, watching you knocking videos out at 05:30 in the morning makes me realise that the day job must really be getting in the way of all the fun. Keep up the good work mate!
Damn right mate, off to work shortly for an 0650 start, and finish today at 1800... but it pays the bills mate, you know how it is.!! Thanks for your support matey.. its much appreciated.. Del.
If I d to choose between 46 works videos and delboy s videos.. ..I d definitely choose delboy 's.. .. because in his videos you can hear loud the heart beat of an effort.. ..and this kind of sound ..send Us to the moon..
Wow, thank you so much Sir, I watch 46 Works myself, he is a genius and I wish I was half as good as him, it's people like him to inspire my projects, so thank you so much for the comparison.
You two are just the best! Can't tell you how much I appreciate the efforts you go to and how much help and inspiration it is to us. You have shown time and again how scary work can be done safely and easily, and usually not that scary after all. Del, you are a home garage God! And I worship at your feet, but Pen, you are just as legendary working that camera. Thanks and BIG respect to both of you.
Hi buddy, my word, thank you so much for your kind comments, it's very generous of you, we love what we do and it's a great way to share time together and do something constructive, take care and keep in touch, all the very best, D&Px
Perfect timing I'm doing the swingarm bearings on my Kawasaki Vulcan 2000,it has the same setup.i appreciate your hard work to help people save money teaching them to do it thermals.well done!
Cheers buddy, that's the aim, you'll need the bearing puller set, but you'll use it again I guarantee it... on special offer at the moment too, £120 off... link under the video if you need it mate, good luck with the Vulcan!
Hello Del ,pretty much repeating the last post but hey ho !! got a cheap 98 r1 with a few probs the owner couldn't afford fixed at the dealer. (steering head bearings , fork seals , swing arm bearings) thanks to your vids i felt confident enough to tackle them at the minimal cost of parts. Now got a classic red and white r1 and I wanted to let you know that you talked me through it all , and ive got a bike I other wise wouldn't be able to afford to buy or maintain. keep up the great vids thanks for sharing your knowledge, Jason
Hi Jason, Good to hear from you mate, im really glad the videos can help you get your R1 back in shape, thats a great bike to have as they are getting rare now, and there's nothing on the road like them now.. they truly were a trail blazer when they were introduced... Good luck with it, and enjoy the journey mate.. All the best... Del.
Heeeee that looked more difficult than you thought it'd be :)) stuck in there good and proper. Good job showing what happened, looking forward to the paint!
Yeah, they were a bit jammed in there.. the main issue with the left side is that you're slide hammering TWO bearings out at the same time.. and not slim ones like the wheel bearing type.. but those needle rollers are almost twice the width.. so the friction area was at least three times that of a regular bearing... still came out though aye.. muah ha ha.. that bearing puller is a beast... lol!
Another brilliant vid, thanks Del and Pen. Informative, practical and just fun being in your company. Have learnt so much from your vids over the years and done a bunch of work on my 2004 Sporty thanks to your advice. I've saved a fortune, feel more connected to my machine and starting to feel like I know half of what I'm doing. Thanks again ever so much and best wishes to you both.
Thank you for your very kind words Matt, we're glad to know that the videos have helped you, and like you say, the feeling of connection and better understanding of your bike enhances the ownership of it... wishing you a very Happy 2021, keep safe and well there, all the very best from us both!
Thanks Dell. Really appreciate these videos and the time you take explaining everything. The only thing I ignored to my peril was having my hand too close to the slide hammer base, you can imagine what the end result was, a lot of swearing and a blood blister. lol. Brilliant mate, I really appreciate these.
You hit the nail on the head with not everyone can afford to have some of that work done. Another great video. Keep up the good work. As much as I like the project builds, videos like this is why I subscribed
Another well informed vid, thanks Mr & Mrs. Have to admit that watching your channel has given me confidence for tinkering with my lil' beastie and I really like the simplified explanations too, so thanks again :)
Excellent & informative vid as we've grown to expect! Wonderful close up photography of the inner seatings of the bearings by Penny pitstop which will inspire the nation to brave this operation for themselves. Yours Ian
Hi Ian, thank you my friend, that's what we're hoping for.. the target for this video was for it to become a long term reference point for people to use for years to come... your support is much appreciated!
Me neither Jonboy, I've seen a roller with a sealed bearing outside of it, but not seen two rollers side by side till now... got your email mate, will send a proper reply later, just working our way through the comments here first !
Hey Del. This was a good simple skills video. I myself use BelRay Marine grease on everything I use since it’s marine grade waterproof grease. I mean if it’s graded for watercraft vehicles then it sure as hell will work on motorcycles in spades. Luckily my project bike wasn’t as involved on the swing arm. It just had the inner tube but with only two outer swing arm nylon bushings. Those old ones were hell trying to chisel out because they had hardened up so bad. Also, for Valentine’s Day, I decided to trade in my Triumph so my wife could have a proper working car again. It hurt, it like I told her and everyone else, “Men do what’s required when their significant other and/or kids have needs that need to be met.”. It hurt but since I have that project bike once it gets built I’ll have a bike again. So there is a bright side. Cheers!
Hi buddy, you're dead right about the sacrifice, the bike is always the first casualty when the family needs our rescue... good luck with your project, what a great motivator to get it on the road! All the best, D&Px
Cheers buddy, you won't regret it, it's a silly price for all that kit, should be over £270, so they're running at about £120 at the moment, and you'll definitely use it again... it will make taking wheel bearings out just chiild's play, as the bridge puller mechanism, that I didn't use, means you don't need a single hitting tool whatsoever... and am gonna cover the use of that when I do the wheel bearings once I get the tyres fitted! Link under the video... get stuck in !
Kick ass video D&P!! I’ve always been hesitant to do bearing work, mainly because I don’t know how to work a bearing puller. Great skill video. Thank you guys.
Hi mate, hope this video simplified it for you, the slide hammer part of the bearing puller set is as easy as that shown in the video, and when I do the wheel bearings on the bike shortly, am gonna cover how to use the bridge puller, which is also in the set....
Awesome, can’t wait. Changing the wheel bearings is something I’ve not done on the CB750 but I should have done a while back. A see a bearing pulling set in my future 🤔😁 Thanks D and P.
Great vid Del, thoroughly enjoyed that - if I'd had a crack at that the outcome would have been disaster, fire brigade involved the lot I imagine...great watching the master at work, and even though I wouldn't dare attempt it myself, I still picked up lots of great tips...nice one guys!
Ah now, hide not thy light under a bushel my friend, of course you could do it... it's a simple enough process, and you're a clever guy... it's just seeing it done and following the steps, nothing complex about it... take it easy mate, chat soon, Del
I’ve got no need to do this task Del but if I did, I’d be saying a massive thanks to you for explaining it in a manner that’s easy to follow and gives confidence to give it a go... cracking vid pal and Penny’s camera work was not too shabby either 😉🤟🏻🤟🏻
Sweet , you can never have enough tools..but when you do get new ones and you use them for the second time you have instant justification elation !!! ☮❤
Great vid Del :) When I needed a bearing press I had thought of using threaded bar (which I can get for free from work) but just didn't have any in my garage at that time. I was lucky enough to have a scissor jack that I didn't need so used an angle grinder to chop all the metal off leaving me with just the threaded bar section with a handle on one end and a big square threaded nut on the other. It was also a bit of luck that the jack I had has it's handle permanently attached rather than the ones with an awkward detachable one. So, a couple of washers and spacers (sockets) later and I have a very easy to use one handed bearing press :) I've used it many times on motorbikes and for mountain bike head bearings, and it coped easily with rear wheel bearings on my Focus which I think have a 78mm(?) diameter so they're a fair old bearing to press home. Keep up the good work Del. Iechyd Da, from the land of song :)
Thanks Mogs, great to see you got over it, I love that bit of ingenuity with the trollyjack, that's my kinda thinking! Thanks for watching buddy... much appreciated!
Cracking video Del , I am with Russ tomorrow looking at those circlip pliers with the magic tips ! That looked a hefty circlip wouldn’t like that shooting off normal like pliers will give you a call
Hey Tony, Those ARE the circlip pliers with the magic tips, they grip the circlip really safely, and yeah, it was the kind of clip that'd either bury itself in your forehead, or vanish into another dimension..lol.. Chat soon mate..
Thank you good sir! Saved me from alot of cussing and acting like a caveman..Had a bearing puller for another project and forgot about it until this video. I didn't ruin 1 bearing 🤞🏽
[p] Nice job Del .Well explained . Dam hurts when you pinch your hand Done it when putting a brake drum a car years back first and the last time i made that school boy error ouch.
To right Del . Painful lesson. Remember setting the valves on a GT6 dam spanner slipped got my finger on the side of the head claret all over the show .
not sure yet still at the strip down part only thing I'm sure of is colour two tones of black and gold .all your vids have gave me a lot to think about now I no how to do more thanks to you and miss penny
See now we knew there was a reason you haven't bolted that vice down! I reckon the swing arm bearings and suspension linkage bearings don't get serviced any where near as often as they should. People are intimidated because it looks hard and it takes a while to get it all apart and it's too expensive to pay someone to do it for you, but as you've shown, everyone should be able to do that, even if they don't need to replace the bearings. Nice discount on that too, might have to consider upgrading the smaller set I have. Cheers Del.
Ayup buddy, you know it's worth it, you absolutely couldb't do this job without the right puller, and this is daft money for such a lot of kit... go on, treat yerself, you know you want one! You're right on the bearings, nobody ever takes a swing arm out, but the short link on this has been done, probably cos it's dead easy to drop off with the wheel and swing arm in situ... save me a few bob too! See ya in a couple of weeks mate!
Delboy's Garage help me!!! You saved me !! Hell I already ordered all the parts for the job with this video I can’t mess up !!! I’m restoring a ZX600E 1993 from tires up to the ignition key I’m going to the hardware store this weekend to make your little threaded rod tool.
Are you sure the black ends of the axle tube weren't overlay? If it can spin inside the bearing with some side load on it, they may have done a hardness overlay on those areas so that the tube doesnt wear away before the bearings. Ide be careful how much you remove.
Only took off the dirt and loose corrosion.. the patternation was the same as the needle rollers and it's just caused by salt build up from our fine British weather lol - it's a hard tube anyway, as it dings when you tap it, so I think it's pretty stable to clean up with a plastic Scotchbrite, and the stuff came right off... good to hear from you buddy, take care, Del
Dublin Dev - to answer that my friend, it's extremely unlikely that you will detect worn out swing arm bearings while the whole back end is built up... as Carleton said here, a loss of up and down smooth action, and a gritty feel to the movement of the swing arm, it's unlikely you will have actual play, and if you hear noises getting on and off your bike, bike squeaks etc., there's half a dozen other culprits that could be at play - thre's the wheel bearings, the top shock mount and the three bearings in the short link, not to mention the joint under the swing arm... and they are more likely to squeak than the main bearing themselves... but if you're ever concerned, take the wheel out, keep the chain clear of the swing arm, drop off the top dog bone bolt, so it's free to move, only moving the main swing arm bearing, then lift it up and down, feeling for grittyness, or a crunchy feel, or at a very rare chance, some play... water gets in and leaves a rusty mess in there, but these bearings don't spin like wheel bearings, so more likely to seize up than collapse... hope that helps, Del
Hi buddy.. sorry i just made them up without thinking to film it.. they were made from 4mm plate, cut them almost round by lots of corner shops like and old Three pence piece, (12 sides), then spun them up on the drill to make them round.. Good luck with yours.. let us know how you get on.. Del.
I’d like more information on your install tool, what’s the OD dimension of the larger of the two washers on the ends of the tool? What material are they made from? What is the OD of the All Thread bar? Looks like 5/8?
fantastic video, well informative. If i had my own garage id give this a go, unfortunately, i only have a drive and am open to the elements. Maybe in time with own house, id do this.
Thanks Matthew, as long as you have a safe off road space like a drive way, you can use a gazebo to do those longer jobs that need a bit more time and weather protection.. not expensive and give you an option if you're stuck..!! take care buddy, and have a good weekend.. Del.
Excellent I think I need to change swing arm bearings on my MK1 bandit 600 and seems quite menacing haha will this tool do the job and will it be useful for wheel bearings on the same bike thanks for your uploads 👍🏻👌🏻
Thanks for the video - I have a really random question for you please Del. Whats the reach of the collet on the sealey bearing puller kit? I'm trying to get the bearings out of an L0 GSXR 750 swing arm but the puller I bought isnt deep enough to get behind the back of the bearing. When I tighten the tool the collet gets pulled out but the bearing doesnt budge. I also tried a cheaper slide hammer kit but it wouldnt budge either. Bearings are 35mm long using a 28mm diameter collet so they are pretty chunky....
This was tremendously helpful, as I am about to embark on this very procedure on my old Harley FX. I found this video in the Nick of time. Thank you for posting, and doing such a fine job of it! Well done.

Hi buddy, you're dead right about the sacrifice, the bike is always the first casualty when the family needs our rescue... good luck with your project, what a great motivator to get it on the road! All the best, D&Px
Thanks Del for showing us the pulle. Will be getting one of them.
A see a bearing pulling set in my future 🤔😁
Thanks D and P.
Thanks mate, those are very kind words, and am very lucky indeed, our Penny does make me look good, even when I'm trapping my hand in a puller lol ...
Great video buddy, a nice half hour sesh in the garage while I’m having my tea, really useful that, hi to Pen too xx, cheers Stu
Thanks Stu, much appreciated buddy, and Pen sends her love to you and the family - catch ya soon!
Super video and super tips! I have to fix this on my own ZXR.
Sweet , you can never have enough tools..but when you do get new ones and you use them for the second time you have instant justification elation !!! ☮❤
Another great video completely demystifying a process that I would otherwise not have attempted. Cheers!
Thank mate, you're very kind, stick it in the saved box, maybe you'll need it one day!
I stripped my Zx 750 3 years sgo and forgot how to assemble the arm great vid thanks for the info
Thanks for the diy press idea! Worked great!
Great video! I’d like to suggest one of the cheap usb snake cameras to facilitate showing the inside of the assembly and maybe inside cylinder bores
Thanks Del, nice video.
I still have the bruise on my hand from my home made fork seal tool! There's blood and oil in my bike.
Too right buddy, they're not truly yours till you've spilt blood over them - see you next month !
Another 1 for the playlist these videos are great and help a lot
Now that's a Delboys Garage video nice one guys.
Great vid, great hydraulic press idea.
Another fine job you got me into Delboy !
Ha ha, cheers Alwyn..
Thanks for the advice. Much appreciated.
Yes mate I could see they were magic tip and they removed the circlip with ease
Duh, sorry mate, misread your message, thought you meant to suggest them.. thats what comes of reading stacks of comments for hours on end..lol..
Hi Del/Penny grate video and good camera work from penny as always
Thanks Stephen, much appreciate your kind words, I just try to capture all the important bits! PPx
Wow.. fantastic guide and fix..
Thanks Edd!
Thank you good sir! Saved me from alot of cussing and acting like a caveman..Had a bearing puller for another project and forgot about it until this video. I didn't ruin 1 bearing 🤞🏽
fantastic as always del & co. thanks heaps.
Great job Del, another job I can do for myself. Keep up the good work.
Cheers David, good to hear from you !
awesome video I am definitely investing in a bearing puller kit.Good Morning and God Bless.. Love To Both and Ride Safe.
Good plan Paul, it will save you more money than it will ever cost, and they're on special offer at Wemoto at over £120 off!
Another great video, thank you Delroy and Penny! luv ya's
Thanks buddy, you're very welcome !
[p] Nice job Del .Well explained . Dam hurts when you pinch your hand
Done it when putting a brake drum a car years back first and the last
time i made that school boy error ouch.
Sure thing mate, you do it once and then you forget you've not done it for so long, that fate makes you do it again just to remind you lol !
To right Del . Painful lesson. Remember setting the valves on a GT6 dam spanner slipped got
my finger on the side of the head claret all over the show .
That Sealey blind bearing kit is first rate.
one word OUTSTANDING cheers del atb iain
Thanks Iain, stick it in your saved box mate, you never know when you might need it ! Thanks for your kind support...
Great resource! Thanks for sharing
My pleasure!
great vid as always your videos like this one are the reason I started on doing a bike of my own keep up the good work Del/Penny
Thanks Rickey, glad to hear that, what did you decide to do??
not sure yet still at the strip down part only thing I'm sure of is colour two tones of black and gold .all your vids have gave me a lot to think about now I no how to do more thanks to you and miss penny
Now that would be a great tool give away.
Superb video. You rock, man!
Lovely... Very good one...
I had a pig of a job with the Genesis. That black burned in corrosion is Road Salt.!
Horrid how it gets past the races mate.
Sure thing mate, it's a shame these bearings never actually wear out, they just get crudded up and get corroded!
nicely done. all the best.
This was very informative I can’t Thankyou enough for making this video !!
You are so welcome, glad it could help you.
Delboy's Garage help me!!! You saved me !! Hell I already ordered all the parts for the job with this video I can’t mess up !!! I’m restoring a ZX600E 1993 from tires up to the ignition key I’m going to the hardware store this weekend to make your little threaded rod tool.
Great vidio. Many thanks Dell Boy.
Hi great vids like how your straight to the point an clear you are
Are you sure the black ends of the axle tube weren't overlay? If it can spin inside the bearing with some side load on it, they may have done a hardness overlay on those areas so that the tube doesnt wear away before the bearings. Ide be careful how much you remove.
Only took off the dirt and loose corrosion.. the patternation was the same as the needle rollers and it's just caused by salt build up from our fine British weather lol - it's a hard tube anyway, as it dings when you tap it, so I think it's pretty stable to clean up with a plastic Scotchbrite, and the stuff came right off... good to hear from you buddy, take care, Del
Excellent. Great video. Thanks for share.
Great video, but I have a question. How do you know it’s time to replace your swing arm bearings? Are there tell tale signs? Thanks guys.
Free play at the spindle, loss of smooth action up and down
noise when you hop on a bike or hit a pothole
Great, thanks for the info guys!
Moonfleet41 that’s a comprehensive answer Del. Perfect, thanks!
Top job Del & Pen,😎👍
Thanks Geoff !
For plastic bushings cut down both ends of a fat washer so it drops past the bushing.
Should off watched this first I've done it but del made it look sooooo easy lol
Thanks Bobby, it always looks easier when it's done aye! Thanks for watching....
Another great video,,,,you really must get your vice bolted down lol
I probably missed were you made those circles.
Buying big rings at the local hardware store will also work i guess?
Hi buddy.. sorry i just made them up without thinking to film it.. they were made from 4mm plate, cut them almost round by lots of corner shops like and old Three pence piece, (12 sides), then spun them up on the drill to make them round.. Good luck with yours.. let us know how you get on.. Del.
Thanks.
Will see how i can do a similair trick.
Del.
@@Moonfleet41 Many thanks. Good idea ref gazebo. Keep up the great vids. Have a good weekend. 👍
Great video! About to do my 05 zx10r
Good luck with it mate.
Can you use the press for steering stem bearings too?
Grate video nice tool I will get one when I need one Thanks
Good plan mate, checkout tomorrows video, ill be using it again for all 5 wheel bearings.. its paid for itself already..lol
Excellent I think I need to change swing arm bearings on my MK1 bandit 600 and seems quite menacing haha will this tool do the job and will it be useful for wheel bearings on the same bike thanks for your uploads 👍🏻👌🏻
Yes the same Blind Bearing Puller kit will remove not just swing arm bearings but wheel bearings too..!
We all know Pen is there to assure us viewers the job is done correct and proper. Thanks Pen...lolol
You're so right..!
Great job.
Great video, inspiring me to get a project bike (aka money pit).
Thank David, go for it mate..!
Mate I ain't Eva gonna do that but man I enjoy your vids so entertaining and subscribed great stuff
Thanks John, welcome aboard, much appreciated!
What's orientation of shock into swing arm between it and upper shock absorber
Great video Guys, very well explained and Edited 😃👍
Thanks Paul, you're very kind, we had a great time doing this one and hoping it will help people out for many years!
Another great tutorial... :-)
Glad you liked it!
Good Show Chap!!!!!!!!!
How do get the Axle bolt out?If it’s stuck.
