- Project Horizon APPROVED at Alton Towers! Back in September 2022 Alton Towers revealed plans for Project Horizon, a NEW indoor attraction set to be built in an area of the theme park not used for over 30 years. This week planning permission was granted for this new indoor ride, that we believe will be a roller coaster. Join me as I talk about what we could see inside this HUGE show building!

Probably the most excited I’ve been for a coaster at Alton Towers! Because it’s indoors, it’s gonna be totally different to anything we’ve seen at the park and in the UK! 2025 will sure be a phenomenal year!

Really excited for towers, not only 1 new coaster not only 2 but three in just 2-3 ish years! Nemesis, the curse at Alton manor, AND this new coaster! Honestly so excited for what’s it come they are doing so much for the park it’s honestly super amazing can’t wait to go march 30th!

I’m excited for anything new in the UK (especially new coasters) but I’m expecting a relatively short track layout.
Why not the first Vekoma indoor mini tilt coaster🤨🤔 or an Indoor S&S Axis coaster? Since S&S has sold one to an European themepark, and none has been anounced yet.
I’d love to see a straddle coaster similar to darkoaster opening at Busch gardens

Personally, I think it could be a Mack, probably a Big Dipper model. Merlin are currently working with Mack at Thorpe Park so it is plausible. It could also be marketed as the first Big Dipper in the UK, and a Big Dipper would fit the size of the building as well as the price range.

Always enjoy your insights Shawn. We obviously have the dimensions of the shell but that's not to say that the can't dig further down which would give them greater room and elevation to play with. A busy few years for TPW, look forward to the content that follows. Keep up the great work 👍
It could potentially be a 2 lap special like the darkoaster over at busch, and on lap 2 changing the lighting and effects.
Other theme park news is that mandrill mayhem has been testing and the great Yarmouth log flume has now been destroyed 😳.
Zamperla is an interesting shout - they're really starting to make some waves in the industry now with the launch coaster conversions in the US too. As long as it isn't a massive indoor Volare with a custom layout!

Great news that this has been approved, wouldn't get too hung up on the height of the Chinese one not fitting it, they could be restricted on the height of the building due to local planning so they could be digging down within the footprint to create some extra elevation
I think a path connecting the new area to the path that goes round the back of Oblivion would be a good idea, you know that path they use for the scare maze in the back of the towers? It would help with foot traffic rather than everyone funneling through one path through David Walliams World.

I’ve been watching theme park worldwide since i was almost 10. (For my 10th birthday Shawn was working the gates and he wished me a happy birthday!) I’ve been in LOVE with coasters since then. I’m going to start a mechanical engineering degree to hopefully go into rollercoaster engineering almost entirely because of Shawn and his content over the years. Hopefully one day I’ll be a part of the team making a rollercoaster that everyone here experiences! Thank you for everything!!!

Imagine if this is a spiritual successor to the black hole, it would be a fantastic callback to the ride
I’d love it to be. Probably the ride I miss the most at AT.
Fire in the Hole [2] will be the first indoor RMC when that ride opens at Silver Dollar city.
A third option is a indoor Mack Bobsled or wild mouse coaster on the likes of Van Helsings factory or the Scooby Doo Spooky Coaster dont forget Shawn Mack also offer a few options for an indoor coaster and Merlin have been building a Relationship with Mack over Project Exodus and could have purchased a multi ride deal.
It's probably going be a dark ride. Something akin to the Black Hole or something involving screens or animatronics.

I hope it’s a water ride like Valhalla @ Blackpool Pleasure Beach. Alton Towers doesn’t have many good water rides since the log flume was removed for Wickerman. It would work all year round with it being indoors.
Apparently RMC are working on there first darkride/coaster if you check a interview with RMC at iaapa they say about it that would be cool at Alton towers
The plans only state the outside specifications, nothing is saying they can't dig deeper inside the building and build a bigger coaster.
Im thinking either a SFX coaster like Mission Ferrari, a new multi dimension like Uncharted or possibly a Mack powered story coaster like Arthur. I think i like the latter better. With that weird arch in the front of the building being a cool outside section

Love the fact there was a video on here about 2 weeks ago listing everything that was going on in UK parks at the moment and just since then there's been another 2 or 3 things announced or approved! 😂 The UK parks really are going mad at the moment! Really hope this helps them on the road to competing with the rest of the world. Some of them really need it - especially my beloved Thorpe Park which really seems to have lost its way in recent years

since it is rumored that Rmc may be involved with an indoor coaster project for Silver Dollar City in Fire in the Hole 2.0
I could definitely see it being a Zamperla, but this one will likely have a launch too

The last indoor roller coaster to be located at Alton Towers was The Black Hole.
But that ride was closed down permanently in 2005 and stayed SBNO
(Standing But Not Operating) until 2011.
Then the ride was finally removed from the park to make room for The Smiler which is an awesome ride in my honest opinion.
For those of you who didn't know this.
Black Hole was such a great ride!
I hope they dig down in the building and maximise the height and space this building provides

I love this coaster and you seem to like it as well, I chose it only as an example. As you can see this amount is well below your current budget which only makes me even more excited. Well if it’s secret weapon then I’d imagine it will be the first you’ve ever seen and the first in Europe, if I think all secret weapons are the first of something aren’t they ? example oblivion first virtical drop coaster, or something like that.

I think it might be a Inverted power dark ride coaster like Arthur at Europa Park. Alton Towers always likes to do a worlds first or Uk's first and I dont think the Uk has a inverted power dark ride coaster so possibly they could be doing one of those.
I was thinking of a new gen Vekoma flying. Idk why.

I’m not a fan of not being able to see anything, it kinda feels like parks are skimping out on theming when they just make it pitch black everywhere.

You think a Vekoma Spinning coaster like Guardians would fit well because the only reason that rides expensive is because of all the theming it has. Also can't rule out a brand new coaster design that no manufacturer has created before or even a brand new manufacturer in of itself

I would personally love to see a coaster like the Guardians Cosmic Rewind, that ride was truly mind blowing and I really believe Alton Towers could come up with such a unique way of presenting the ride
That ride is reported to cost 200million dollars and probably a bit more on top. Towers have £12m to play with so I'd lower your expectations a tad there. Hahaha

Black hole 2025!! On the original site of the beast that a lot of people back in the day said was the original black hole track (but wasn't). Or an indoor water ride/coaster to replace flume that was an iconic ride.

I did think what if they are fooling everyone and it will be something like Valhalla, they've already got a water ride up there in the dungeon so I suppose it's technically possible, but I don't know if there'd be much they could do to make it unique.

19.4 meters in height isn't very tall for a coaster (64ft), maybe they are digging down into the ground also like they did on nemesis. Then you have to think in the event of an accident (hopefully never) how do you get cranes and lifting equipment into rescue people?, might not be a roller coaster at all in the sense of a thrilling one. maybe a family ride?
The log flume AKA the salty express at great Yarmouth pleasure Beach has been removed and scrapped (lucky Charlotte)

I was told that they were thinking about Zamperla but they decided against it due to the technology being to new and the coaster would probably be unreliable

You rightfully brought up Zamperla's problems with reliability but I think you're forgetting that the other manufacturer you highlighted is Intamin!

The planning application stated that no digging down would be done.

maybe there building a moddern black hole inside the building. some clues are the spiral drones formation at the fireworks event. plus black holes have whats known as an event HORIZON. just my guess.
Anyone for an indoor wild mouse? Could be a reference to the Alton mouse that used to be located in coaster corner! Pay homage but have a modern twist! Cedar point are getting one which proves the concept isn’t dead! Also the one in Hershey looks great with the right theme!
Just looked at the site size on Google Maps and wow it is massive space and have seen the plans, it is a big building isn't it. I mean looking at door on left hand side of sort length side, looks same size as Derrens Brown Ghost Train a.k.a ride that is now going under retheme as new Ghost Train ride for Thorpe Park Resort. Big enough to fit one of those trains probs in or a coaster train? Could be? Might be wrong, but agree that building is too big for a flying theatre, I also think too big for a flat ride a.k.a a big one, think aswell this will be a coaster. But what type? I can see those types you mentioned maybe going in there aswell one coaster type like The Mummy. But a few I could see are RMC Hybrid Coaster with maybe launches, drop sections, lift hill and non upside down? With a lot of theming, storyline etc? Or could be an indoor unique version that goes upside down, with twists and side turns? But think now there are too many versions now of those types in the world and think drop elements of one could be different for Alton Towers Resort aswell maybe unique elements? Another idea was thinking maybe it could be a Vekoma Flying Coaster like Fly? But maybe smaller & not as big? But compacted in with immersive theming? Is that possible in a building this size or unlikely? Because that would be epic, but not sure on the building size 100%? I think its likely a coaster especially in doors as it would be quite noisy with wind speed when trains runs circuit quick aswell screams from people, so think 100% its a coaster. But depends which type? But another type it could be is maybe, this is very unlikely but maybe a modern day Suspended Swinging Coaster? Like Vampire, but different & including unique & new elements on it. Or finally another bike coaster? Maybe? Swinging suspended coaster by Vekoma is what I would like it to be, but I doubt it will be this. But yeah, guess we will find out soon what it will be. I mean could all be wrong, its not a coaster, but a new indoor water attraction? Like Pirates of the Caribbean boat ride at Disneyland Paris? Or Valhalla at Blackpool? But Alton Towers unique version with more drops & immersive theming? But look forward to the future, hearing and seeing more news & updates in future. 😀👍

The large curved part in the plans could be an outdoor track section, makes me think of Arthur @ europa park or Mission Ferrari, probably way out the budget and space given though

It's 12.5m. don't get too excited, that absolutely nothing for a new coaster nowadays. That'll get you some basic themeing nevermind a new experience
