Season four of Big Mouth is finally here, and so is the start of eighth grade for our favorite Bridgeton Middle Schoolers. Despite successfully surviving the previous semester filled with heartbreak, betrayal, musical numbers, and self-discovery, Nick, Andrew, and the rest of the gang will have to navigate even more important topics this year, like racial and gender identity, coming out to your parents, changing schools, and the dreaded summer ritual of group showers at sleepaway camp. I’m Whitney Van Laningham, and this is my spoiler-free AND spoiler review of Big Mouth season 4.

And the characters became so much more relatable cause we understand now why they were/are like "that". They're just kids who are in need of love, already felt that with Jay/Nick's family, but I really felt for Lola this season (apart from the boy falling in the screw part)

One thing I always love about Big Mouth is how each season I find myself relating to at the very least one character in a very personal way. Not too many shows can do that.
This season the characters i related to most were Missy and Nick.
Missy because much like her character this season, in my youth and teenage years, I've never really felt "Black". I'm not biracial but I was never into the things most black kids at my school or that were into. From music choices, clothing, what I liked, how I talked, or even saying the N word, Not that any of those things are what it means to be "Black". But as the quiet nerdy kid by myself, I felt left out. People even used to say I acted "White". It really confused me when I was young. I even had to Code Switch (much like DeVon's song) and changed the way I talked around other black people.
It wasn't until college that I gained interest in things rap music and slang and certain clothing choices. And I realized (just like missy) I can still be "black" and be myself, I don't have to give up parts of myself to experience new things or belong anywhere. I learned being black was being myself, so when I saw missy accept herself, I got emotional.
And Nick, as I got older there was a apart in my life (and still kinda now, but I'm working on it) where I felt dead inside. Where I was becoming more of an asshole and distancing myself from people, because of my own Anxiety and insecurities. I was trying to not be hurt by anything that it made me cold inside.
But seeing Nick accept himself good and bad, and what he thought of that part of himself. Gave me a bit a a panic attack myself and even allowed me to examine myself. It was powerful and well done and had me on the verge of tears.
I really enjoyed this season, and what it conveyed about pressure and anxiety.
Edit: and although to a lesser extent, As someone who suffered from serious constipation and had bathroom anxiety, when I was a younger.
I can tell you his problems werenot entirely inaccurate, from stomach swelling, to your breath literally stinking, and when it finally happens (after a long time)it's basically like giving birth and as bad as Andrew displayed it.

Honestly her opinion on Nick Starr kinda felt off. Nick Starr is the representation of everything he doesn't want to be, and he fears he's gonna be Nick Starr in the future causing the anxiety mosquito to gain power over him. I feel like we can relate to Nick on some level, some relate to him more than others but it is definitely accurate. Like my worst fear is becoming like my father and hurting my kids like he hurt my brother and I. My dad is like my Nick Starr in a sense. But I like how Big Mouth said it's not too late to change but I hope it's carried out through the next seasons because change doesn't happen in one day.

It was basically nicks downward arc that Andrew experienced In season four. The main difference this time is Nick starr exists mainly in a possible future and Nick avoids becoming the r/niceguy he has elements of showing. Andrew is almost not really over missy as he does try and hit on her initially. Andrew mainly shoved his toxic masculinity into his male peers whereas Nick seems to throw himself at Jessi and other girls by forcing his apparently not renounced feelings from when they dated

I think a heck of a lot of parents are just like.... “cool, but let’s not talk about it.” But those people don’t really share their coming out stories cause it wasn’t really dramatic. I think my favorite moment of the season was when Maury went to yell at Matthew's mom. I love that Maury has a soft spot for Matthew, but I think most of us have had that moment when we're sad and upset at our parents over something, and we all wanted someone to come to our defense and tell our parents how "good they have it with us being their kid". I definitely had those fantasies as a teen, for the times I could only think about standing up to my parents when I felt they were being unfair and mean. I know Matt's mom never heard Maury but it was nice to see Matt's face smile through his tears when Maury was yelling at his mom, knowing that he is loved by someone.

This is going to be very long.
I HONESTLY LOVED THIS SEASON!!! Okay my favorite aspects:
    1. JAY AND LOLA! Cutest couple so far! They were so good for each other, so happy and healthy! They don’t care about what others think because they just had a connection! Jay really listens to Lola ugh just so great. And how they acted like an old married couple HAHAHA! And they’re Bonnie and Clyde costumes OMG! Sooo upset they split up. I get how Lola would be reluctant to admit she loves Jay and I think it was childish and selfish of Jay to dump her. I hope they overcome this fight and get together again in future seasons.
    2. Monsters/creatures! The Depression Kitty and Tito were a great duo (and by great I mean comically, not actually haha). It really portrayed how depression and anxiety feel. The Gratitoad was also so cute and fun! He was so funny, had a great personality, and inspired me to be more grateful out loud (lol weird but true).
    3. MISSYYY! I loooooved her new look and her exploring her racial identity. I am a white girl so I can’t really relate but I loved seeing her process and gaining a new perspective. I wasn’t very excited about losing her voice actor because I thought she wouldn’t capture Missy as well, but she was SO GOOD! I loved this transition to a black voice actor because it makes sense and I think she’ll continue to be great and make Missy her own (sorry I don’t know any of the VA’s names lol)!
    4. Matthew’s development! I kinda always disliked his meanness to Coach Steve, especially in the 9/11 episode. It was sad seeing Coach Steve be so childlike and not understanding what his birthday was, but ultimately Matthew changed his ways and fixed his damage. I hope to see more Nice Matthew in the future. I also love his relationship with Aiden! They are both all talk, but inexperienced, which is really cute and funny. Finally, he came out to his dad! I haven’t experienced anything like him, but it was so endearing to see his dad be so supportive! Adorable! Matthew has always been a favorite of mine!
    5. The future episode! I loved all the stuff going on outside of Nick Starr, even though he was the main focus. I loved the world, how Jessi became a social hero, Andrew’s family, the subtle part that shows Seth and Natalie actually do stay together, and the status quo with the super rich and other classes (so interesting and kinda realistic!). The ending was strange with Nick being lost in space by himself, but of course it was just a dream, which makes sense.
    6. PEN15 CROSSOVER! I laughed so hard at this. It makes total sense for them to work together. The girls OWNED that episode. Very cute!
    7. Maury and Jesus. Idk I just thought this was hilarious!
    8. Michael Angelo! Yes, he’s a d-bag, but also kinda hilarious. I thought he was awesome at first and awesome to HATE later haha (especially with vaping and pressuring Jessi). I actually thought the blue balls thing was kinda funny.
    9. The songs!!! A lot of them had like actual points instead of just there for entertainment. They were well written and sounded great, some of them pretty catchy.
Okay my not so favorite parts:
    1. The poop animations-ew! I lowkey liked the Poop Madness song but the animation for it was kinda gross. And when Andrew and Nick were acting like he was having a kid was uncomfortable.
    2. Nick’s hormone monster. His puberty seems to not be progressing at all, which is kind of annoying. Will he ever get a real hormone monster?
    3. Ali and Samira’s relationship was mentioned like once or twice. Just seemed kinda glossed over.
Overall, I really loved this season. I think the gross humor is heavily outweighed by the wholesome relationships, relatable plots, and character development! The songs were awesome!!! This is tied with S2 as my favorite!

    • @melodyyoung8841
      @melodyyoung8841 3 роки тому +1

I agree with all this, but there's a reason behind Nick’s slow progress into puberty. I believe that Nick is a late bloomer. He may have Connie, but he is going through it at a slower pace. It is also because Nick is supposed to be like his voice actor, Nick Kroll, who had said that he himself was a late bloomer in real life.

Nick's whole story about anxiety was actually pretty relatable to me.
I think the game show host stuff is meant to be a generic metaphor about the feeling of inevitability when having a panic attack. Our thoughts become automatic, destructive, crippiling and there's this notion that we are destined to become this disgusting version of ourselves, without emotion, caring, or much genuine pleasure outside of some substance to be addicted to.
In 2020 i went through a lot of emotions like these after my grandfather died and i cheated on my girlfriend. I try to kms a couple of times, but eventually my psychologist taught me breathing exercises, the new friends i made playing among us talked to me a lot and i eventually learned to accept my monstruous side of me, acknowledging it and trying to control it, instead of killing.

I feel like you missed the deeper levels of Nicks arc. He is a privilege white male kid and because of his super supportive parents and society as a whole he became super selfish/self preserving and lacked real empathy for his friends and family, and that’s kinda always been a part of him. His battle with his older self was a battle about the kinda person he wants to be (his intentions) and it resonated with me. I can relate to his experience of having to take a hard look at yourself and understand that the path you’re on motivated by anxiety & shame (I really wish the shame wizard showed up for him as well) is not a good one and it takes work and help to change. I just hope that he continues to change because at the end of the season he was still rude to Andrew and Missy and I feel that his actions towards Jesse can’t really just be waived away by a simple I’m sorry.

I don't think the point of Nick Starr was specifically a commentary on narcissistic fame-obsessed people, just that everyone who relates to Nick has to deal with their ego and how it affects their sense of preservation and self-worth and that's just so happens to be how it manifests in him--probably because he's based off one of the show's creators who likely had that image associated with himself at one point what with him being a creator of a show and all
The much bigger point to take home here is to not fall victim to your own ego and self-hatred to the point where you throw away your better nature and shove everyone away just to make it stop hurting, and to reach out when you really need help before you internalize everything to the point of shattering yourself and other people. Which is a message that a lot of people relate to and need to learn from, myself included
It personally didn't matter for me that Nick's aspirations as a shithead gameshow host didn't resonate with me at all because I related strongly to just about everything else in his arc this season (internally and not externally for the most part however, so thank god for that). Because of that it was very helpful and relieving to see that I'm not alone in my head and that there's support for the idea that I don't have to become lost to the cloud of hatred and insecurity if I make a concerted effort to stand up to myself in a positive way. Which I mean actual therapy is way better for but I already had that one
In any case seeing Nick stand up to his asshole self was incredibly cathartic and I hope people don't miss the point of him embracing him as him embracing his assholery. Nick's assholery is fueled by insecurity and self-hatred so he has to be able to overcome those and recognize his faults at the same time, which means not beating yourself up 24/7

I just wish the new actress tried to at least replicate it, it’s just hard when we’ve had 38 episodes of this character having this particular voice and then it changes for the last two episodes, it was kind of upsetting and really took me out of the show.

I think Big Mouth is one of those shows that you really have to get used to to realize that its not too much. There's a lot of things in the show that are important. A scene I think about a lot was Nick seeing himself, the part of himself he hid away, in Nick Star. It shows what a lot of people go through.

My regret was that unlike other seasons, I binged it too much. Usually I would take a little while so that I could think and take notes about what I saw. I know it's stupid, but it's soooo relatable to what I was going through only a few years ago/am still *kinda* going through now (I'm 19). I felt SO isolatedthroughout puberty, this show basically says: it's okay, we understand and get you.

I agree. The first three seasons were great but this one feels like it's leaning too heavily into shock value with no substance. The wacky parts of the story were always metaphors that were going on in the kids heads that represented something in real life but now they're starting to mix the reality and fantasy and it doesn't make sense anymore

I love how Missy gotten into more black culture I can relate to her since I hang out with my cousin and big sister a lot and I always get called that I’m not “black” enough or I don’t “act” black but anyways I think she looks so cute in braids and I felt bad for Matthew once he came out to his mom and she didn’t really accept him at all and i can relate to him as well once I came out as Bi to my mom my Junior year

nicks fear was about becoming emotionally detached to the point of isolating everyone he cared about and being unable to show genuine emotion for anyone because he’s so afraid of humiliation. I hate to be harsh but its like you didn’t understand the nuances of the whole thing. The game show host is a funny way to present what happens if nick becomes emotionally isolated and the inhumane actions of the show further the point that he’s got no basic human decency left. It wasn’t really meant to be funny it was meant to be disturbing. That whole episode was kind of meant to be disturbing

Honestly I sympathize with Lola and think that Jay acted like a total jerk about it. Lola had every right to go off at him when she opened up about something very personal and relatable. I think Lola is easily the most relatable character for me, constantly being left by other people, feeling alone and overall insecure. But hopefully someone like Jessie will show Jay what he did was wrong and apologize to Lola. They won't get back together right away but will have a close bond until Lola is ready. Hopefully in the next season, Lola will work through her abandonment issues and be happy on her own but also finding supportive and non-toxic friends unlike Devin. Speaking of Devin, I'm really glad Devon divorced her. I don't like the fact they hinted a relationship between Devon and Missy though but I'd love to see them become best friends and work through their racial identity together. I'd also love to see more of Missy's cousins.

I also love how the series actually address importent things and even countervarsual realistic topics make it funny and stupid and still educational
They have added a diverse crew of characters but made it really natural with realistic teenagers character arcs.
I actually felt relatable to Jessie, Misty and Nick's character arcs

Although I do agree it was kind of a rehash I appreciated Jessie’s camp period subplot. For me learning to manage my period at home was completely different than learning how to in a new environment. I floundered a lot, even more than when I first got it. Although it wasn’t needed, I loved watching more relatable embarrassing nostalgia.

okay don’t get me wrong, some jokes in this season were crossing the line. like how they did the 9/11 episode they didn’t really give like an ending talking about the victims and how many people were lost. but i feel like everyone forgets that this is an adult swim show. this show is for adults so i think that some jokes are gonna be offensive. but by far in my opinion this was the best season of big mouth with the dialogue between all the characters, the romance with jay and lola, the fights and the makeups with andrew and nick, the songs, the missy scenes. this season was absolutely DEVINE. but of course that is just my opinion and i’d be honored to respond to anyone else’s 😀
    *edit*
this season also ended on a more chill note with rick singing. but i do hope to see more of him, mona, the therapist, jessie’s school, and gina in this season too.
    *second edit lol*
i also agree with you with the connie stopping being nick hormone monster. nick and jessie have fought before when in season 3 they were in a quarrel about the girls being sexualized and connie was still there and present in both of their lives on both of their sides for the little time they were arguing. it seems so stupid because maury is andrew’s and matthew’s hormone monster and even though he likes matthew better than andrew LOL he still finds time for both of them.

I disagree about Jessie's period story during camp. A lot of the experiences of the boys were so outrageous, I feel that not treating Jessie's experience the same way wouldn't be doing her justice. Getting your period and managing it through different situations in life is such a big thing. Her just getting it on a field trip doesn't do this monumental life changing moment in a girls life enough justice. I feel that episode was perfect in its own Big Mouth way in explaining what this shit is like.

  • @evilmejosh
    @evilmejosh 3 роки тому +1

I think the reason why they focus more on Jesse's period drama is that she was not prepared for it by her mom. It seems like her mom tried to force on her to be a strong and independent woman but never really focused on her needs biologically as a woman. She doesn't really seem to be engaging in conversations about sex or love or dating with her. Whereas Missy I feel like her mom would have covered periods with her . Lola and Devin are not really the central characters that we focus on so we don't know what goes on with them in the background.
