This is the most useful video showing me all the details related to auxiliary fans, wiring kit, and the most useful part "relay"
Thank you so much for this video.

    Okay Thanks so Much!
So which prong on a relay would be for which component of the curcuit? I want to wire a thermal switch(activates at 40°C) to my intercooler and a manual switch in the cockpit. Also since im using switches do i need to use ny ignition source for 12V or can i run straight to my battery since the relay is relying on the two switches that would be "Control the ground" right?
This video explains it all better than the other one hundred that I have come across (7yrs looking) but i really need these answers so that it can finally make complete sense of what I need to do. Also you displayed a 4 prong and a 5 prong, which one would benifit me the most. I also believe there are at least two differnet configurations of 5 prong relays (center prong being 86a or 86b etc.)

    A lot of great information.
But how would I wire a push through radiator temperature probe?
Is it one wire lead to 85
    And one to ground?
    OR
    One lead to 85 terminal
One lead to and ignition source?
    Thanks for your help!

How much is that system from vintage air? I have a 03 focus with dual fans, all new parts yet fans do not run on their own but, I drive a 07 Pontiac G5 2.2 vin F & I ha e never seen the fans run on their own so I figured out how to run low speed but, I need the fan to operate properly & at a temp lower then 223° low speed, & 230° HI-SPEED..MY CAR CYCKES BETWEEN 178-192 NORMALLY EXCEPT WHEN driving up a continuous hill/ sitting, idling. I turn on low speed at 190-ish but, I cannot control hi-speed yet. Any help is greatly appreciated!!!

Hmmm. DIN 72552 says terminal 86 is relay coil positive and terminal 85 is relay coil negative. Normally it might not matter, but if there is a diode in parallel with the coil it would matter. Are you using another standard? SAE, ISO, ???

Thank you for this video. But what if the relay has a malfunction? Then the override switch wont complete the circuit. So it has to be either the hot or the cold direct wire that supply the fan to be connected to the override switch.

I want my fan to come on as soon as my motor is running in warm weather,is there a reason i couldn't use the exact system shown here with the exception of running my ground direct to battery ? If not how can i wire the cooling fan in a 1995 mustang v6 to come on & stay on the entire time the motor is running ? An inline switch is no good seeing as im doing this for a disabled woman wholl forget to turn the switch off & kill the battery leaving her stranded.

My new 57 Chevy American Autowire kit provides constant power to the relay coil so even when the motor is turned off, if the water temp is above the sensor set point, the fan continues to run. How would you wire the relay coil to only have 12Volt power when the ignition is "on"??

    • @seanglenn1901

.....???? WHY DO YOU WANT TO CHANGE THE WAY IT COOLS , THAT IS THE WAY IT SHOULD BE SO THAT YOU DONT HAVE EXTREMELY HIGH TEMPERATURES JUST COMPLETELY STUCK IN THE SYSTEM THAT WILL MAKE EVERYTHING BREAK DOWN FASTER.....THE QUICKEST COOL DOWN IS THE WAY TO GO

    • @pappabob29
      @pappabob29 4 роки тому

      @@seanglenn1901
Your mis-understanding what I'm looking for. I'm not trying to change how it cools. First of all, I figured why it was running when I turned the key off. The "original" ignition switch simply had "off", "on", and "Start". The new switch that came with the new wiring harness, has one additional position to the left of "off". You would consider that position "Accessory". When I was turning off the ignition, I was going all the way to "Accessory". That was sending power to the fan relay so if the temperature of the coolant was still above the sender set point, it would continue to run the fan even though the motor was no longer running.
I have no intention to change the "on-off" set points of the sender.

I am so confused with pin 85 and 86. Why are some vehicles earthed to 85 and others are earthed to 86. Its understandable if your just hooking up your own relay but if your temporarily tapping into the earth pin whichever it is, you'd want to make sure you're not earthing out the switched power one.

  • @rpaull3

I like that the fan is automatic, but just putting a switch in isn't dangerous unless you don't use the proper gauge of wire... turning the switch off means the circuit is open and no voltage gets anywhere if the wind spins the fan a bit. I do like how you explain everything. I always thought of relays as a weight saver when it comes to wire cause it just relays the signal to a heavier wire, but obviously it's more complicated than that if they do other things, like wiper relays and fan relays.

Using relays to switch a DC fan motor is a real bad idea. It can blast the relay contacts leaving the fan at full RPM dead. Starting DC fan motors draws high amount of DC current that can short out the diodes in your alternator. Get a good solid state controller with SOFT START. See more at www.autocoolguy.com

When the coil shows a freewheeling diode accross its terminals, I've always seen that the cathode is connected to terminal 86, should not be better to favor the connection of power to terminal 86 and ground to terminal 85 even if diode is not present. Of course the diagram on the relay case dictates the rules!

Anyone familiar with electric fan circuit breakers? My universal fan kit works up until a certain ambient air temp. After 90 degrees it wont work. I have it in the coolest part of the engine bay, which isn't very hot, and yet hot days will cause it not to turn on. I Live in a costal town and it is pretty reliable-get inland in the summer and I am toast! Any ideas?

Thank you for checking out our video! We would have to find out how you have the fan wired. That will help us determine what is going on. Depending on the temperature switch you are using, there are many factors that can cause erratic behavior in fan operation. The reading on a gauge may not always match the timing of the fan switch operation due to location in the engine. Please call us so we can help you get it figured out 800-482-9473 and press option 4 for Technical Support. Thank you.

THE FAN WOULD BEGIN TO COME ON, AND THEN THE RELAY WOULD "CLICK", AND THE FAN WOULD STOP... I BOUGHT A NEW RELAY FROM THE PARTS STORE, WHICH DID GET THE FAN TO RUN, BUT, IT WOULDN'T KEEP RUNNING... IT WOULD START, AND STOP CONTINUOUSLY, ALLOWING THE TEMP TO REACH 230 DEGREES... AT THAT POINT, I JUST BYPASSED THE RELAY, SO THAT THE FAN COMES ON WHEN I TURN THE CAR ON... I WOULD REALLY PREFER TO HAVE IT OPERATE OFF THE RELAY, LIKE IT'S INTENDED TO DO... ANY SUGGESTIONS WOULD BE APPRECIATED...

Relays are a piss poor method to switch fans on and off. The contacts WILL be obliterated over time and miles. Starting current in DC fan motors WILL cause huge current spikes on those relays. It can also blow the diodes in your alternator. Get smart and go with solid state pulse width modulated fan controllers with SOFT START and drive worry free. See www.autocoolguy.com controllers start at 55 amps up to 200 DC amps.

Using relays to switch DC fan motors from a dead stop IS NOT a good idea. First, the contacts will burn, go open or weld shorted. The high peak current can blow the diodes in your alternator. Then the fan at high RPM will driver you nuts and your fuse holders will melt down. Better go with Pulse Width Modulation with the Auto Cool Guy aka www.autocoogguy.com
