  • Clip of Dwight Schultz as Reg Barclay

    Barclay is one of my favourite characters of all time. Purely because I was with the rest of the crew in disliking him at first but then came to understand him just as they did.
    It’s something that not many other shows attempt with such earnestness.

    They really wrote the character well. Watching him try to hold it together and pretend to be what they expected, but he was far from going into that man yet. They expected him to run when he wasn't even crawling yet. But ultimately cracking under the enormous pressure they put him under, no one can handle that for long.

    As a kid I did not make the connection about the scene, I knew who Barkley was but I did not know it was him do to the fact he was not a regular character on the show. Years later and seeing it again, I cant help but be very amused now that I could make the connection now, very nice cameo. Its well written as well because if a viewer did not watch star trek regularly, you could just see him as random but euthanistic crew member making an embarrassment of himself and viewer having a laugh at it. But if you were a Trekie, its just Barkley being his amusing and brilliant but awkward self. Robert Picardo and Ethan Philips were great as well in their cameos, a they did not look out place or taped on unlike we see in modern movies.

      @@al307antony2 Space itself isn't science fiction. The term refers to effectively everything beyond a certain layer of Earth's (or any other given planet's) atmosphere.
      However, its portrayal in science fiction does carry varying degrees of inaccuracy. How ships in Star Trek or Star Wars maneuver, for example, are pretty much at odds with orbital mechanics. There's also a good chance we won't see a million other species that are just humans with different forehead ridges - if we ever get to encounter extraterrestrial life at all.

    Interesting time travel question - did Zephren really invent the engine for time travel or did the future boys actually "invent it " from memory and assume it was Zephren invented it because that is what is in the history books. Maybe Reg is responsible for warp drive?

    • @christopherdean1326
      @christopherdean1326 11 місяців тому

      Well, no. The time travel came about through the Borg going back to stop Cochrane's test flight, nothing to do with what Cochrane wanted to achieve.

    • @Dularr
      @Dularr 11 місяців тому +1

      The time travel is a bit mushy in this movie. They show the Borg assimilating Earth and the Enterprise crew defeating the Borg. Both can't happen.

    • @946towguy2
      @946towguy2 10 місяців тому

      @@christopherdean1326 Unless it is a paradox and alteration of the prime timeline. Perhaps warp drive was not invented on Earth, but was inadvertently brought there by Vulcans, Ferenghi or some other species crash landing on the planet in the 20th century. Maybe the history only record Cochrane as the inventor because of time travel.
