  • Life through the lens of jiu jitsu
    If there is time still...
When I think of Jiu Jitsu, I think of it as a huge “lens” through which I see all things, but it has not always been that way therefore I do not expect you (who is reading this text) to immediately understand what I want to tell you.
A more common thought about Jiu Jitsu is linked the concept of efficiency, due to its history of confrontations with other combat sports from the 1930s onto the challenges and victories of the Gracie family, which had immense publicity in the decades that followed. Rio de Janeiro became the most competitive fighting place in Brazil and later with the UFC in the rest of world.
Why is Jiu Jitsu so efficient? What makes it stand out in comparison to other combat sports? These questions generated the attention and attracted thousands of people to learn Jiu Jitsu.
If someone was looking for an efficient way to fight or to defend themselves, we could assume they would be interested in learning some type of self-defense because it would make them ready to deal with any unforeseen attack or threat. Which reminds us of another important area as Jiu Jitsu, which is the ability to improve people's lives and make them feel safer. although it is not the only or the main objective for some people, jiu jitsu directly impacts the fitness level and mental health of all practitioners, which is great, but, is it really enough? Absolutely not.
Who wouldn't want to learn how to defend themselves, to improve physical health and also boost their own self-esteem*?
What we seek through Jiu Jitsu is personal development, the pursuit of virtues, having a prosperous life and in the end being able to extend this to others, the sense of community is perhaps one of the strongest and most special things we have, and you can enjoy it too, if you pursue the philosophy behind the art of fighting.
We should help each other in the search for constant evolution in all Jiu Jitsu academies, to develop ourselves and to develop our training partners, which puts us in a position to be kind and generous towards others through knowledge sharing.
We learn in Jiu Jitsu that fighting is not easy and that it is good a thing, because it takes us out of the comfort zone and makes us evolve, from both dealing with winning and losing we get used to the movements of falling and lifting ourselves as many times as necessary, and as we learned from Charles Darwin, it’s about the “survival of the fittest” not the strongest or the fastest. It’s able the one who best adapts and can stay in the game. Which means that developing resilience is key to any form of success and there is no better place to practice this than in Jiu Jitsu.
To be virtuous is to have courage, courage to act, when necessary, to say what you think, to defend the truth, to help others, to fight for a greater cause. Courage is perhaps the virtue that is missing the most in our day to day, but the good news is that you can learn to be brave, during training. Courage is not an absence of fear, which should be just a momentary feeling and never a state of, spirit, because this leads to cowardice, perhaps one of the most serious attributes of the human being.
Anyone can access these benefits and start seeing life through the lenses of Jiu Jitsu, but there is one thing that no one can do for you, act, you need to take the first step and Jiu Jitsu will naturally turn you into your best version, after all Jiu Jitsu is for you!
