I’ll be 100% honest. The idea of voting for mobs is great. But the main flaw with it was that the losing mobs never made it into the game. It should work like this: The winning mob gets added first, and then the 2nd mob gets added in a later update and then followed up with the 3rd one. This was basically the case with the biome vote, as although the mountains won, the swamp also got updated just in a later update. the mesa could potentially get updated in 1.22, idk.

Idk, maybe it’d be a good idea to do the mob vote but it’s reversed. You’d vote on the one mob that you don’t want in the game, so fewer ideas overall are left in the trash (and the bad ones they come up with every once and awhile don’t end up in the game). The ones that pass could be implemented over a couple updates when they fit, or maybe even the next updates could be designed around them.

Like I'd be less against the vote if fantastical 1-off mobs were the only votrs, but things like Crabs?? Why shouldnt crabs be in the game? Or penguins? They're just regular real-life creatures! These choices make no sense, they're regular animals and now they'll likely not get added (assuming we go by what Mojang's done so far, which is not add back any losers directly).

To “fix” the mob vote, they should just make it a vote between 2 mobs instead of three. Having three mobs means the one that wins only needs a little over 34% of votes to beet the other two. Thats wild because you’re leaving more than 60 percent of the community pissed off because they voted for the other two. Having only 2 mobs to vote on solves this by making the winning mob be supported by the majority of the community. Instead of less than half.

My idea which I think is genius is a mob vote revisit, which would run along side the regular mob vote and once a year, were every mob that didn't win a mob vote goes into a tournament that the community gets to vote on one of them so that the older mobs get a chance to actually be brought in and not just get scrapped. IK they MIGHT just bring in some of the mobs eventually but as it stands now, none of the mob vote losers have seen the light of day and kind of seems as possible as the red dragon coming to the game is. I feel like a lot of people fail to understand that Minecraft is about pushing what it means to be a sandbox game. That’s why they’re sparing with what they want to add-in, but also why they have recently been putting in so much work into expanding what contentpacks and datapacks can do. If something isn’t in the game, you can probably add it in with mods, datapacks, etc. If one doesn’t exist for it yet, all the necessary resources are public. And even if you don’t want to make it yourself, there are ways to reach out to the rest of the community to make it happen.

This line of reasoning would make sense, if even just the majority of vanilla survival oriented additions (so not counting the technical changes) as of late had a focus on sandboxy features.
The fact that this isn't the case even holds true for Tricky Trials, where yes, we do get the revolutionary Crafter, but other than that? The Trial Chambers seem pretty much hostile to farming conversions, the new mobs coming with them are just combat challenges with one non-combat, not particularly useful gimmick each (you can't make a breeze fire without a player around and bogged don't have a transform condition so cannot be replenished for mushroom farming like drowned can for copper), the wind charges are only a neat mobility tool with a secondary function that they are too rare to be used in automated contraptions for (would have made for some neat wireless redstone otherwise), the heavy core and breeze rod themselves are just deco and weapon components, none of the new copper blocks have any new functionality (grates letting liquid through and oxidizing doors making for locked doors have been obvious suggestions, but no) and let's not forget that the copper lamps initially had a 1 tick delay which would have been huge for anyone deep enough into redstone to understand what that means, but that was undone for what continue to be baffling reasons.
Yes, Minecraft is primarily a sandbox game. No, it isn't being run that way.
It feels more like a happy coincidence when a feature turns out to be made with more in mind than the very specific, initial way it was meant to be experienced and used. We don't get mobs like pigs that can be ridden with saddles and transform when struck by lightning anymore. We don't get tools like fishing rods, that can be repurposed in fun, creative ways anymore.
In fact, if you want to know how little Minecraft is directly targeted at what the players can do and have done with its open ended foundations, consider, during Minecraft's 15 year celebration, how much of a focus the builders, the redstoners, the speedrunners, the hardcore players, the pvpers, the storytellers and the coders got. All those parts of the community, who have made the game what it is today by constantly pushing it to its limits? They hardly got even a mention...

The biggest issue I have with the mob vote, and something that the devs seemingly either fail to understand or simply dont address, is that the features the mobs provide are not equal. The mobs all provide massively different things in terms of gameplay that its not really fair to just lose out on two interesting game mechanics for one you might not care for. I dont think they should add all three, but i also dont think they should tease all 3. 3 mobs each update is a decent amount and would probably lead to feature overload, but losing out on features that you have wanted for a long time or care about feels really bad. So either the mobs need to not introduce new usefull features, or they need to reassess the entire mob-vote.
Not to mention a majority of the mobs added are incredibly rare. It feels like almost everything they add to the game is rare. Like, for example, when was the last time you saw a stray or a husk? Theyve been in the game for years but there are people who dont even know they exist, because they made them incredibly uncommon. There can be rare things in games, but it feels silly to devote time to developing something, complain about how long it takes to develop and how the community doesnt understand the dev process, and then hide that feature away so that only those that are really searching for it find it. Its silly.
Additionally, the mob vote is notorius for dividing the community. It happens every year, youtube, reddit, twitter, etc. Every minecraft community becomes divided 3 ways and it creates unnecessary drama. The devs obviously know the mob vote creates drama, the regularly respond to it. So why continue to make more drama every year when they could instead bring the community together. If they want community input there are much better ways to do it. Not to mention if the mob vote is really split, it can mean that up to 59% of players leave the vote unsatisfied. Its just not a good system that lets down more people than it excites.

As a game designer, I can offer a little insight into the mob vote:
The mobs they present are basically one step outside the conceptualization phase. They're just ideas presented with a little concept art. That's the easy part of the design process. The hard part is actually implementing and testing the thing. The initial idea may prove impossible for a variety of reasons, or worse, you implement it and it only detracts from the gameplay experience. Now you need to figure out if it's worth experimenting with to make fun, or discarding it before you waste more time on it.
The mob vote mobs are ESPECIALLY hard to design because you're committing yourself to the idea before it's been tested. That's how you end up with the Phantom. Something that upon implementation proved only irritating, but couldn't be discarded. Thus they tried hiding it behind a sleep mechanic that made it less likely to show up, but that only introduced its own huge design problems.
This is why every mob since has been less impactful and less experimental; only including mechanics and ideas that are self-contained and easy to implement. When you're designing an entire update, you don't want some unknown variable that may or may not be included to mess everything else up.

So realistically, while it would be nice to add the chilliger and everything else that lost, it would be impractical.

It depends. There is some level of QA and version compatibility that goes into it as well (bedrock means any feature they add has to work on all platforms and not just Java). But beyond that, it just depends on how much effort they want to put in it. Something like the Sniffer probably was that simple, but then the Armadillo (with it's multiple iterations, introduction of an entire new armor system and leading directly into wolf variants) took a lot more work.
Honestlt if all the mob vote mobs were added with that much polish and effort, then I'd understand why they only do one each update. But most of them aren't, and honestly shouldn't most the time anyway. Like a "Tuff Golem" shouldn't have as much work put in as the Armadillo got, it wouldn't make sense.

      @Spooglecraft 5 місяців тому +15

take it from a programmer who's left the novice stage some years ago; never underestimate how much time something actually takes, especially in complex projects. there's a big difference in just adding a mob as the only feature of the game and adding a mob into a large existing game.
sure, they have the ideas somewhat set, for example "the crab drops a claw that extends player reach", and have already put some thought into how and whether those ideas would work, picking them from a large pool of ideas they brainstormed before. but beyond "the claw extends reach" and some basic idea of how that would work in the game in a way that feels good (for example, not requiring the claw to be held in the main hand, thereby making the extra reach functionally useless), there's not much concept.
within a day or two, you can create a prototype and that's very valuable, it allows you to see how the idea might work and interact with the rest of the game, but the hard parts come after that. for one, you need to figure out the whole interaction part, and with a game like minecraft, that already has a lot of preexisting systems, that can be tricky. you need to consider how your new feature affects those systems, for example the extended reach affecting combat up to boss fights and the new trial chambers, aka other features you or your team are adding in the same update, and systems like mining or pvp balance. you'll need to do a lot of experimenting there, tweaking values or even the whole concept.
and then there's the technical testing, checking for bugs and performance issues, making sure the new feature doesn't break anything. and, speaking from experience, never underestimate bugs and how much time they can take to hunt down and deal with.
there's also the factor that in a professional environment, you'll be working with others and there are processes in place. for example, when you're done coding the feature, you don't just push it into the main game. instead, another developer checks your code before it gets pushed into a shared testing environment. and the big release only happens after a lot of testing and making sure all the new features work with each other and the existing game.
this all may sound scary, but you're gonna be fine. the good news is, you don't need to worry about most of this stuff for now. in a professional environment, you'd start out as a junior developer, tasked with the direct coding, and gain experience and more responsibilities over time. you having to deal with those questions comes with more experience and even then, you're not alone. for example, at mojang and many other game studios, there are whole teams of people with different skills dedicated to implementing new features. as a programmer, your job is the technical side, while the concept and the considerations of game systems fall to game designers.
the main difference between a novice programmer and an experienced programmer isn't how fast they write code or implement features. it's more about code quality, or rather, their skill at considering the bigger picture, the whole technical side of the product, which directly ties into code quality. just focus on writing code and learning and gaining experience, trying something a little more complex each time, and you'll get there.

"Spend more time on polishing" is what exactly makes one mob take a month to be implemented. Sure it takes a week or even just days to make a prototype, but polishing is important too. Something to be said about the mobs added by the mob votes isn't just how barebones they are but also how much they seem distant from the game.
Take the sniffer and Armadillo for example, they only have one purpose but above that there aren't many advancements relating directly to them.
Advancements are something not a lot of players care yet it still is something all players know about because its part of minecraft, to make these mobs feel more at home, more challenge like advancements could be implemented.

@@sboy2044 Cows only have advancements shared with other mobs. However my point is that if a mob will only have one purpose they might as well have some challenge advancements related to them.
Cows are a source of milk, leather and beef as such are part of the core resources of Minecraft, its different from something like a glowsquid, a sniffer and an armadillo who offer one resource that can only be used for one purpose, the sniffer is a specially agregious one despite having an advancement, because Torch flowers while cool in concept do not yield dye or anything, they are just used to breed the sniffers and while that is a nice use, if they could be trade with villagers on rare cases it would feel like they have at least more than one use.

@@bradwhite5884 I honestly think it would be a cool functionality to allow the player to use a sort of hue system. By right clicking a glowing mushroom with any of the default dyes (Colors of the rainbow), you can add a set amount of *“Hue Offset”* (essentially the games way of checking what the hex color code is for whatever color it’ll decide to start displaying), you can use up to a Maximum of 64 of any the main dyes. (64x4=256, however RGB Hexadecimal Color Codes only go up to 255, so adding 64 allows us to reach that max, instead of being stuck at 252 if we allowed a max of 63.) Anyhow, the other limitation is that if you use to wish just purple dye, or any of the other complimentary colors, you would only be able to use 32, as it would count you adding double the amount of the normal *”Hue Offset”* to both Red&Blue. You can also use both black dye and white dye to affect the _Saturation_ of the lighting, letting you reach darker tones of color. Using a Gray Dye will reset the Mushroom back to its default *”Hue”* (Essentially: The game keeps the original Hexadecimal Color Code stored in the NBT Data, and when you use the Gray Dye it force sets the *“Hue Offset”* to what it was before any modifications. Using Light Gray Dye instead will reset your _Saturation_ to 0. _Saturation_ goes up or down by either +x (White Dye, max of +50), or -x (Black Dye, max of -50)
It sounds complex, *and it most certainly is,* however I think it would be a major mix up in how people, players and builders alike, view, use, and understand how ambience can make or break an experience. The master builders already know how to do that without this resource, but it could also help streamline the process for them.
P.S: I realized at the end of this, I didn’t even think of a way to change brightness. Probably a combination of Glowstone and something else.

For example, if they just added dog armour and armadillos, I don't imagine many people would be upset, everyone will either be neutral or like it. However, if they say you can have either dog armour or a tool for extra reach, there will definitely be people who prefer both options, and then when one inevitably loses and is shelved that means there will be people left regretting the decisions of the community.

The same goes for frogs and fireflies, but I don't think they should have removed fireflies entirely despite that.
It's not like riding a pig because pigs in real life just will run away and not let you ride them, so it's not like feeding an animal something they'll accept despite the harm it would bring. I always found the way Riot Games handled community additions far better. Instead of giving a list of nearly complete ideas and asking which one the fans wanted, they had a series of votes to figure out the details of one specific addition. They did this once with a skin in League of Legends, and once with a card in Legends of Runeterra. I think the perception would be a lot higher if the mob was slowly designed piece by piece instead of a questionnaire on what we don't want to see abandoned.
What biome should the mob be in? Is it friendly or an enemy? Is it based on a real animal or something fictional? etc. etc.

The mob vote controversy is still so silly to me. People want to be as informed as possible to make the "right vote", but it won't suddenly unite the community behind a single choice, and would probably lead to even greater voter regret. Time and resources are finite and ideas are infinite. They should focus on the best ideas for updates instead of adding all 3 concepts from what is essentially a publicity stunt. I find most features in a given update are better than the typical mob vote candidate anyways. The mob votes leading to shelved ideas is nothing special. It happens every single update. There's still good precedent that when new inspiration is struck, ideas can be un-shelved: crying obsidian, the lectern, the warden, the allay, archeology, the swamp update, and plenty more.

On top of this, modders have been able to recreate and add the mob into the game in a matter of hours. The issue isn't that the mob vote makes us feel like we miss out, but rather it somewhat highlights the question on everyone's minds: "If some guy in his basement can add this to the game in a few hours, why can't Mojang add it over the course of months?
