NEW! Q BOOMBOX: The Honey Badger's Big Brother
Вставка
- Опубліковано 4 жов 2024
- In this episode of TFBTV, @JamesReeves interviews the creator of the Honey Badger, Kevin Brittingham of Q, about the new Q Boombox. The Boombox is, more or less, the "big brother" of the Honey Badger. While the Honey Badger uses a 5.56mm sized frame to accommodate .300 Blackout rounds, the Boombox uses the new 8.6mm Blackout, which works in the same size frame as 7.62mm guns like .308 and 6.5 Creedmoor. And even though the Blackout has a big caliber and capability jump, it is only a few ounces heavier and a few inches longer than the Honey Badger. See what all the noise is about.

I know it might not be possible, but i think the cheaper version should be called the Walkman

Perfect 😂😂😂
This is the perfect name
No that would be the MICRO CARRY Version
The poorman’s Radio for sure
Thank God it doesn't come with the universal standard MLOK and instead comes in something proprietary that no one asked for.
Typical Q lol
It's a boutique weapon from a boutique company. I think it's fair for them to experiment with new things that may or may not end up crossing to the normal market. If someone cares enough, they could sell MLOK rails for the gun. The rest of us can wait for another company to start selling an 8.6 gun that doesn't cost $3k just for the gun version of the Apple tax. It's not like an AR10/DPMS couldn't do what this gun does if you give it an 8.6 barrel.
As far as Qsert goes, I'd suggest using them before complaining. It is by far the best attachment system ever designed. In addition to the best performance, it is the lightest.
@@genericadjectivenounname9001 thanks Kevin B. We get it, you shoulda went Mlok. Dont be like LWRC
@@chrisdavisunofficialok Kev, ya dont need to reply with Two different accounts..
the most annoying thing about this cartridge is that you need a 338 silencer for it.... thats rough. most of us have 762 silencers..
so youre looking at $3-4k for the rifle plus $200 tax, $1-1.5k for a silencer plus $200 tax, $2.5k in ammo just to start with 1k rounds... this is a $6.5k+ investment just for a new caliber. thats a lot of 762+300bo guns and ammo we could buy for that price. id say its cool but inaccessible for all but a few with money to burn to experiment.
This wasn't built for you and me.
It's kinda the same thing as 6.8spc, 6.5 grendel, .300BLK... It was really expensive for the people who initially invested, but they basically paid for the tooling and manufacturing costs to make it more commonly affordable for the future adopters... Can't argue about the can though, most people don't already have a .338 can... Although I am actually looking forward to what Q does in the "multi caliber" steel can market... They have a whole new lineup of basically titanium weight welded baffle and mystery steel silencers supposedly coming soon, and some are supposed to be comparatively cheap vs. comparable silencers... I guess we shall see 🤔
Stop being poor
You need a new job
Think a 9mm can would work just fine. Can would have to be rated to run 300BO subs too. I know Microtech Defense won a military silencer request for a 9mm can a few years ago and their can was rated for 300BO and were checking to see if their can could be rated 8.6BO too, but never heard if they got it approved for 8.6BO... That can was about $1200.00 If you wanting to know the answer, check with MicroTech Defense if you're serious about that silencer.
if you thought 300 blk was expensive now imagine shooting 8.6
Psa had made 300 blk very reasonable
I can find 300 BLK for cheaper than 5.56 and almost as cheap as 9mm. Or reload it yourself for pennies on the dollar.
@@D_Boonecheapest new 9mm is .23¢ per round and 5.56 is .39¢, I’d like to know where you’re getting new 300blk at less than .39¢

Good to see you carrying that Boom Box properly.

twist rate changing the subsonic game... damn it.
Can't say I'm super happy that these gun companies are still carving out weapon niches for the government.
Military contracts are what drive the firearm industry, they offer more money than the commercial market ever could for a single company. This is how it has always been. The civilian market with its restrictions would limit most companies to “16 inch semi auto only” rifles which doesn’t give them a ton of room to change much with designs.
Yep, the same government that's infringing on ironically enough our rights to bear arms and that field agents to carry out their bidding who use...you guessed it: arms

They’re still dumb.
I’m a huge fan of the 300 blk out. Done got 8.6 blk out ammunition but no gun. It’s in the works for me. Maybe I’m looking at it wrong but the faster twist rate will give more kinetic energy on target than most other common guns. Why kill my hearing or my shoulder.
The high twist rate is needed to stabilize the slow, heavy, subsonic bullet. I'm comfortable guessing the vast majority of the energy deposited into a target comes from a bullet's linear velocity not rotational velocity...I think if you fired a spitzer into gel from close range (no chance to keyhole) from a rifled and unrifled barrel you'd see pretty similar results aside from any tumbling the lack of spin might introduce
I remember reading about people loading hot rounds with 40-45 grain hp or soft point bullets in .223 and shooting them with 1/7 twist barrels and the bullets fragmented as they left the barrel from the combination of high velocity and fast twist. 1/3 twist is insane! :)
There's been some claims that 8.6 with lead-core projectiles have the jacket tear apart under the 1/3 twist rate. If that is true then solid-copper projectiles may be the only option.
I've heard the same claim on 55gr 243 Winchester at a "fast" (I think 1:9) twist rate. Good thing they only load with monolithic copper slugs.
Well that’s because the heavier the bullet the faster twist you need with a shorter barrel, .300 blackout was designed for a 1:5 twist barrel, hence why Sig and Q who actually invented .300 all use 1:5 twist for their .300 guns.
@@Marksman5147The issue becomes versatility over speciality. I’ve never been too impressed with subs in 300BLK and use supers (even when suppressed). Since it seems the majority of people are shooting unsuppressed, there isn’t a big advantage in shooting lackluster subs, hence the popularity of slower twist rates. Lucky for us all, there are tons of options to meet our needs.

2:00 the put a word “fuck” on a hydraulic press!!! Love the Q!
As a Boom Box it should be shoulder mounted with a hip hop step and threaded for a sub woofer aftermarket suppressor.
9x39 exists, fits in a shorter action, fires bullets that are slightly wider and just as heavy, and doesn't require a twist rate that's closer to a thread pitch than rifling. I just don't understand 8.6.
It’s not Russian.
well it doesnt sound like youre a ballistics engineer so no one would imagine youd understand it
9x39 doesnt have the super sonic capability offered by 8.6
9x39 has inferior terminal performance at subsonic velocities. The copper 8.6 projectiles peel into half dollar size flowers. 8.6 is not meant for plinking. It's meant to maximize subsonic performance at ranges well beyond conventional subsonic ranges.
Why the fuck is the boombox using such a short barrel?
I suggested the Brown Bear and the budget friendly Black Bear.
But im also building a 300 BLK Honey Buzzard so my naming ideas may not be great.
Extremely cool and imo usefully innovate design. Cutting edge stuff is usually prohibitively expensive for most people, but hopefully we’ll see something similar to what we saw with the 5.7s, 300 BLKs and etc., where the initial versions were super expensive, but after a few years other manufacturers came out with more affordable options.
Fully agree, I see huge versatility for military and hunting applications with this round
Would be interested to see if they play with the twist rate and higher pressure loads for more range

The gun is neat. But im more interested in if other companies will make a rifle chambered in 8.6. Maybe we will get a ptr51 chambered in it and it won't be such a flashbang. SFAR in multiple calibers is where the win is. Just need better barrel change capacity and aftermarket options. Lightweight .308 frame has so much potential.

It is somewhat like a space marine Bolter.
Thank you TFB TV for actually justifying the fast twist of 8.6 BLK. I didn't understand the point of .338 subsonic, considering it doesn't get that much more mass, and therefore forward kinetic energy (because velocity is limited), but if you can put extra energy into spinning, it helps the bullet expand, and transfer energy to the target.

@@robfarrell9104Ah, gotcha. My mistake. And I agree completely.
So it took 10 years from 300blk to be introduced to being a mainstream round. Lets hope 8.6 takes less than that
I don't see it happening. 300 BLK has the advantage of fitting in the smaller, more affordable AR-15 platform. 8.6 requires the larger, much more expensive AR-10. Maybe you can do it in something like a Ruger SFAR. 300 BLK uses common and inexpensive .308 bullets. 8.6 needs less common and more expensive .338 bullets, particularly ones that that can withstand the fast twist rate.
300 BLK succeeded because it could live up to most of the marketing hype. It's an extremely versatile round that performs well in places the 9mm and 5.56 fall short. You can run it subsonic at close range where it outperforms the 9mm using a platform the same size as just about any sub gun. The trade-off is ammo is heavier to carry. Supersonic, it delivers much more damage than 5.56 at shorter ranges, but it doesn't reach the 500-600 yards 5.56 can. But if you only care about 0-300 yards, it does a great job right there. It's not a bad one-rifle solution for someone who wants a defensive weapon that can also be used for hunting medium game.
8.6 BLK is mostly a one-trick pony. I'm sure it's a fun range toy, but I don't know how big the short-range subsonic large game hunting market is. But outside that, it doesn't do anything that .308 or 6.5 CM can't, other than drain your wallet.
@@JaronActual I already had a solid 308 AR-10 and for $300 I got a 86 barrel and gas block. So the total invested in my rifle was around $1000. My AR-10 is a M&P 10 and got it on sale.

Q isnt about Financial efficiency
FN FAL or g series.
This looks to be based on the revolution receivers so not quite
Yes, you can re-barrel a .308/6.5 CM upper and change calibers with just the barrel swap. Same bolt face, same receiver, same magazines, etc. The gas tube lengths tend to be shorter (pistol length on 8" and 12" barrels, carbine length on 16" barrels) but it is pretty simple to change those components when you swap the barrel. It's not inexpensive to shoot, even if you reload, but it is fun and versatile as a hunting/home defense platform.
No… the whole point of 8.6 is that you can have a much, much higher grain bullet than a 308 case would allow because it’s a larger diameter, longer bullet going into a shorter case. That is what you want for shooting subs specifically. The idea is that you have a high energy subsonic platform that can also shoot supers in order to flex to longer ranges.
!!!!!Full blown game changer!!!!!

This is innovative stuff. And I don't mean just the 1 in 3" twist. But especially the twist rate. I think a lot of people don't understand what the twist rate can do for muzzle energy and energy downrange. I quickly built a spreadsheet to see what twist rate can do for energy and I'm still hard. And that's after I came a little.
😂 scrolling at 4am and your comment did not disappoint 🤣🤣
But for real imagine a round like this with a non expansive projectile in the style of the underwood extreme defender or penetrator
Their whole thing works off rotational energy and I would bet that an 8.6 with that would be like shooting a 50 cal with no recoil (or range) and dead silent.
They use a solid copper projectile too so no exploding ammo problem
I think there can be a lot of interesting development for lower MV but ultra-high rotation defensive rounds. Traditional soft expanding projectiles are basically a “solved game” at this point.

@@kevinbrittingham6774 Unlike this gun or “Q” I do care about one of my favorite gun channels and I’m always willing to leave a comment to help the algorithm and engage with other viewers. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my comment.
@@christopher7398sorry we hurt you.

Cool idea and put together in an awsome way. If i could afford it i would buy it.
I recently got into 300blk since I got a can that I can run it suppressed and love it for fun but isn’t ideal for any kind of distance with subs. Seen the 8.6blk not too long ago and been waiting for manufacturers to start pumping these out. This thing is nasty and I want one!! Lol I’ve always been too poor for Q anything but I think I’m gonna start setting aside some coins here and there and save up for one of these then start on saving up for a can for it. Cool little tool and can’t wait to get ahold of one. Thanks for coming out with cool shit👍 also for James I wonder how many new subscribers those shirts got you on this video? I’m thinking a lot!!!
This round is gonna drop just as much as 300blk does, dude, it just hits harder when it gets there, same trajectory though.
If you pick a steel core bullet or some other penetration focused construction, you can maintain a lot of terminal performance at long ranges.
The bottom row of projectiles in that comparison picture is horrifying. 😮
LoL was thinking the same bro, looks like would straight rip ya a new one +. Would like to see tests/comparisons of those in some gel....slo-mo ! ! ! !
That hand rail system is dumb. I wasn't aware I needed something "stronger" than keymod or Mlok and then you have to buy all new stuff. If it isn't broke, don't fix it. That will probably make people not want to buy it. That being said, this round and gun is an engineering marvel for what it is. I hope it becomes cheaper and more common like 300 blk
The mounting system is superior. Stronger, lighter, better zero retention.
@@kevinbrittingham6774 Just because something is "superior" doesn't make it more useful. I bet they put Mlok on the version they sell to market.
That’s ridiculous. But, a cheaper version will exist and be basic.
We also need that select fire
