I met my wife at an Angels concert when they were playing this song. Literally bumped into her on the dance floor. Played it at our wedding 5 years later and I hope they will play it at my funeral, whenever that is.
Rock In Peace Mr Bernard Patrick Neeson. Ten years have passed since you moved on to play in the afterlife with some other greats of rock. Best Aussie frontman ever
honestly, seen, and met many, but Doc one of the best front mans ever. Have scene meet the rest of the band a few times, and they are great, but they are still missing their front man. Live on Doc.
Castle hill rsl, 1986(?) My best mate n i front row centre...mate has a beret n black wraparounds on, doc points to him and beckons, seconds later hes wearing that beret n glasses...marseilles hammers out...fkn awesome. Gave my mates stuff back n thanked him for the loan... We fkn LOVED the angels.
Saw them in '81 at the Agora Ballroom in Tampa. We were so psyched and honored that they took the initiative to tour in our neck of the woods. They did not disappoint. No opening band, just 2 hours of non-stop hard rock and a young, limber Doc Neeson climbing walls and balconies while the Brewster brothers and rhythm section tore it up. I'll never forget it.
Great song from a great band.....I saw them more than any other band and they were never less than incendiary. Doc was a riveting front man, one of the very best- and the band were just so damn good live I'd have to rate them as the best Aussie live band I saw ( Next to AD/DC of course!) Should have stuck it out longer in US....they deserved global success. Doc.....I salute you!
The Brewster brothers , just awsome the entire band were just awsome , never seen the Angels play live but I damm wish I did , RIP Doc you great man ❤️
Bands like INXS, Michael Hutchence never wanted to be a frontman, he never even wanted to sing Midnight Oil Cold Chisel Skyhooks Were all sooooo much more poplar bands than The Angels But did an aussie rock band have a better frontman that Doc Neeson. NOPE. Doc was our "Freddie Mercury" I'm sure fans here will back me up.
@@veganath I saw ACDC with Bon up front live. Bon was a good singer. Not a great singer. He wasn't theatrical like Doc. ACDC attempted to copy the theatrical look of Skyhooks. But it never worked for them, or for their fans.
It's the best guitar solo the Angels ever recorded, which makes it one of the best anyone ever recorded! And yes, that's exactly when it kicks into high gear!
I love it! TLDR; This song is a top contender for one of the most exciting and best constructed guitar solos in history! Warning: Crazy insanely detailed attempt to explain this opinion follows. Optional. Can skip. Not recommended. I warned you! There's lot of great musical passages in this song, and the contrast in dynamics between the French interlude and the grand finale is wonderful, but I just want to describe in ridiculous detail what is my favourite guitar solo out of all the incredible ones the Angels recorded. The climb to the high D (here reached at 6:40, but the climb really starts, in a very low gear, after Doc finishes his spoken French, around 5:45) is a sheer masterpiece. The climb kicks into high gear around 6:12 and it's like a rising inexorable tide. The highest note we hear gets higher, then the wave retreats but the next wave gets higher still: at first the highest we hear is the E, then the F#. We keep falling back to the A below but climb again, this time reaching the A above. We fall back to the E that at the start of the passage was the highest we could get on the scale, but after gathering our strength we leap up and leave it behind! The quest to reach that high D we are unconsciously longing to hear is epic. We unconsciously ache for it, the chords all through this have just been alternating A and D. We have rested on the F#, we have rested on the A, we need to reach the D! The genius of the climb to the D is that our approach gets both faster and slower simultaneously as we get closer: the number of notes per bar increases as we ascend the scale more slowly. It creates an exquisite tension! We first hear the C# at 6:28 but then don't get any higher for four whole more bars! But now we don't fall any lower than the high A. We reach that C# again and again and again and again and again and again at the top of the individual phrases, faster and faster and faster! The tension is extreme! We spend more time and more notes each bar on that damn C#. It feels like we have never been anywhere else! (Even more so on the studio version than this rendition) Will we ever reach the D?! Only that D will give us the complete climb we've been aiming at all this time. When we DO finally reach that high D it's an almost orgasmic triumphal release and satisfying relief something like... like... that of watching Doug Walters bring up his Test Match century in a single session with a 6 off the last ball of the day!
This studio 22 sessions saw The Angels at their best the sound the energy ,this was the best line up of The Angels, and I saw/seen them all this was the best, they deserved to be bigger world wide, but like Rose Tattoo they have reached cult status and are a huge influence on so many bands around the world,OZ rock at it,s finest!
me too, Apollo 1981 Adelaide OMG Life changing best concert. Next best was Dandenong hotel in 84 Doc walked out on top of crowd and threw copies of Adelaide newspaper ‘The News’ I love them and will always cherish them😢
Oh my God! Brings back memories of the cassette I literally destroyed by playing it soooo many times. Got booked by the highway patrol one night back in the late seventies. Have a guess what was playing at full bore in the car?; couldn't hear the siren. Chased" for a few kilometres before I realised. The fine was worth it!!
Legends. First saw them around 1974-1976. Followed them round the Sydney pubs for years. Monsters of rock. Great days on the Sydney pub circuit. Also Cold Chisel, Jimmy and the Boys, Radiators, Midnight Oil, Rose Tattoo etc etc etc. A golden age of Aussie Rock! Oz has produced more great bands than any other country. And remember: "No way, get fucked, fuck off!" :-)
Saw these guys many times growing up in Adelaide they were regular features at the arkaba hotel in town. Was a fairly small venue so the ears were ringin all night. Fckn top outfit

Yep - Not sure why but I always feel the loss of doc deeply whenever I hear this song. This was the first band I can honestly say spoke to me. Songs like Straight Jacket, I ain't the one etc really influenced how I saw the world

It was there manager that screwed the USA deal . He did without talking to Alberts . Thus no home backing.

in all honesty .. loved the angels .. but the oils put on a hella show
Loved them in1978 and still love them.
Such a great riff 👍🎸
