    Y'know, they've just NEVER stopped doing this kind of thing in Japan. I just had the same treatment today - hot lather, hot towels, straight razor shave, lotion, a trim of the eyebrows, a head and shoulder massage - and a cool 1940s cut that pomps up rockabilly style in a second. My barber is an artist. I love all this traditional stuff.

  • @tbenjaminkx42

    I'm a barber myself and let me just tell you that Donnie Hawley is one of the best, if not the best barber in the whole united states for the style of cutting that he does. His shaves are some of the cleanest and most well organized I've ever seen. The hot towel is NOT pointless either. The purpose of the first lathering is to soften the hairs, and open the pores, and kind of clean the face before the actual shave. That's why you remove it. The hot towel opens up the pores and also softens hair.

    • @SeabassSeeker

      What sort of benefit the open pores give to a shave ?

    • @Breanana
      @Breanana 2 місяці тому

      Open pores allow you to get a closer shave. Pulling the skin plus that gets closer. Also, the hot towel is going to make the hair easier to cut. Pores are just a bonus lol@@SeabassSeeker

    this guy really makes me wish i made better decisions earlier in life. if i didnt waste my time at art school for nothing and owe all that money i would of liked to take that money and go to a barbering school. really inspiring, especially when somebody like him is all tattooed up like myself. cheers.

  • @tbenjaminkx42
    @tbenjaminkx42 11 років тому +4

    Yeah it's really interesting and going through school and watching other barbers really makes you appreciate it more. There are some barbers that instead of the first lather, they will use a cleansing cream to clean the face of anything before applying the actual lather and shaving. It's a shame that not as many clients desire straight razor shaves anymore..

  • @MrWatchtower

    I don't think this was an actual shave shave....Looks like he was giving a demonstration. I don't think he has a blade in his straight razor holder or placement.

    You will see many Barbers do this, in fact it has been done this way since wet shaving was created. Some men when wet shaving at home do the same thing except with their shaving brush/lather. The point is that the lather cleans the skin of dirt, dead skin while working in harmony with a hot towel to prepare your pores, and soften the skin. This overall prepares it for a blade. That being said you don't have to do it, but it provides a more pleasurable experience.

      TheNo85307 I think I lost two nephews to those trapdoors (one nephew called me from Hong Kong and said he woke up making fake Rolexes in a factory after going to the barber for a sideburn trim), so don't tell me not to worry.

    • @Cretaal
      @Cretaal 8 років тому

      Well, that was hong kong. The trapdoor remark was a reference to the old time murderer, Sweeny Tod. As long as you're getting a shave in america, I doubt you have to worry about becoming the victim of a disgruntled barber. If they ever had the inclination to slice a throat, chances are they did it and got caught and jailed already. Come to think of it, I don't think I've ever heard any stories of barbers intentionally slitting throats. But I agree, very nerve racking to have someone else touching a razor to your throat. Frankly, I'm more worried about a doctor leaving a surgical tool in me after an operation than I am about murderous barbers. Unless you're a high rolling mob boss with a lot of enemies, I think your fine in the states. Just don't get your face shaved in places like Brazil, Hong Kong, the Philippines or any third world country with poor law enforcement. Being an american makes us tempting targets in a lot of countries.

    Why would you use canned cream? For a traditional and close shave you must use shaving cream from a tube and lather it up with a brush. The canned stuff is too dry to soften the stubble.

    Everyone saying that he gave that kid a shitty shave doesnt know what they're talking about. If you notice that kid has some mild acne and if he went all out on his face he would have tore his face up, that why he didnt go so close or make multiple passes. The latherizer doesnt make him "lazy" either. With all the preparation of the hand lather+hot towel (twice) hes good to go. My barber uses the lather machine and it comes out so hot and perfect, it relaxes you and almost puts your ass to sleep. The guy knows what hes doing. Cant judge him off of a quick youtube video.

    Did you use the witch-hazel with a HOT towel? It just looked like it was smoking when you put it on him. Might have been because it was cold, IDK. I was always taught that you use hot, pre shave, to open the pores/soften the hair, & cold, post shave, to close all the pores or any micro cuts, so the astringent would kill any germs on TOP of the skin, but not get into the skin to irritate it/cause razor burn.

    @glenruben They use brush to get the hair standing up. First they use rotating move to get the dead skin, then just tease. For health codes, barber should wear surgeon gloves. You have to brush if you want comfortable and close shave. Not this inflamed, razor bump result as in this video.

    the traditional brush is badger, not beaver.
    But from a practical viewpoint, how many brushes would they go through a day? They cant use a brush on more than 1 customer since you cant sterilize it without damaging it. A traditional brush costs > $30
