I use small rare-earth magnets to hold the pattern on the steel before tracing with a Sharpie. You might give it a try.

I’m glad you actually tested the blade. Too many smiths just show the making to finished process without proving performance. Well done.

Nice, good info, understandably presented. Been making knives for going on three decades, and when i started there was a major lack of intro info for beginners. Good to see a patient, well paced video to walk people through

Yes i know. Been wanting to get into knife making since i was a kid. but it wasn't until recently there was enough information to help me feel comfortable. Even now theres not a lot for absolute beginners like me. Thanks for the comment my friend 🙂

I am a 73 year old USMC, RVN Veteran and I want to start making knives. I subbed to you a few weeks ago and really enjoy how you succinctly describe the process and let me know when you make a mistake ~!~ I am gathering my equipment and tools and plan on making a DIY 2X72 belt sander. I don't plan on selling knives, I just want to make them for the fun of it. Thanks so much for your willingness to share your expertise.

G-flex is the best epoxy I've ever used. I have tons of experience with fiberglass repair among other various repairs and it is the toughest epoxy on the market in my opinion. You could glue a tractor to a ceiling with that stuff. Expensive but worth it.

You can make knives out of old lawn mower blades. I knew of a man who made knives for New PBR riders. He used old lawn mower blades. Not sure how many PBR riders he did it for but every time they stopped in town he made sure they each got one of his handmade knives. Very well built too. Was gonna go learn the trade at his shop but he passed away before i got a chance.

Old vid. It is interesting to me that of all the knifemaking/bushcraft channels I've perused, This style of knife keeps popping up. It resembles the Camillus Becker Campanion. It also resembles the Wilkinson Type D survival knife & the MOD survival knife. Nice work!

I really liked the new knife that was meant to look old. Good useful knife. I always liked drop points for gutting and skinning and its hefty enough for a lot of uses. Might I suggest bois d'arc, desert iron wood, or mesquite for handle scales. They're hard enough to take a polish. Also, J.B. weld for glue. It will bond anything, will stand extreme heat and isn't bothered much by moisture.

Alex. Thank you. I have spent a ton of cash trying to find a good hunting/camp knife. I came to the realization that I just needed to make my own. Watched a few “forged in fire” episodes. Decided it would cost a second Mortage. Decided I would find an affordable way. Found your channel and now I’m pretty sure I can do this. Anyways the wife told me not to burn down the house. But I just wanted to say thank you.

Hi Alex. I watch as many of your videos as time permits and always come away with the same thought: you make me sick.... not in a bad way, just that everything you teach/demonstrate adds something to my list of things I’d like to do. Sadly I lack the time and probably your level of skill that’s obvious on you vids. Oh well, I guess I’ll have to wait until I retire - or quit my job to do enjoyable projects! Keep up the excellent work & record as much as possible. The things you teach are outstanding!!

If you want an old looking knife, Id suggest using oak wood for the handle, aside from just being asolid quality wood, in my experience it tends to turn to a kind of darker grey color pretty quickly which really helps with the aged, worn look.

I’ve been watching for a while and have tried my hand in building a knife myself. My question is about the bevel, I noticed you clamped your blade to a piece of angle. I wasn’t able to see if you have the blade at a pitch to make the point or not. Thanks for the help and step by step instructions.

  • @johnmutton799

You make a decent knife and the first thing you do is baton! It doesn't matter what steel, don't baton. Make a axe for that. But i enjoy wadtching knife making. And that was tidy. The handle clean looking was ok. It will get patina as you use it. If you burn the wood do it before hand. It will shrink. And any heat on the glue will start it hoing soft and does not really set again. Nice job!

Once again great job looks terrific .As you know vinegar is a power full agent on steel ,even cleaning a old knife that I found in the mountains all rusted up ,took the handle of laid it in some vinegar and just watched it on and of for about an hour mazing watching the rust to float of some settled to the bottom of the dish while some just floated away . Needs to be watched though it just never stops eating away .Happy Trails

Cutting out the paper template with a pocket knife. Priceless.
Us mortal craftsmen go to the box of razor blades.
And the end tests are still impressive. How you beat on all your time and effort, makes me sweat and it not even my "time or effort". :)
Maybe splitting a bullet with one of your blades is in the future? I bet .22 plinkster would help!
Thanks again for the craftsmen lesson.

You can cut the epoxy with alcohol. Done that for years to allow it to soak into the wood real good..I once flew an RC plane straight into the ground. Only thing intact. Was the Servo housing side walls. The part soaked in epoxy with cross bulk housing..I'm talking a 25lb RC plane. The motor was trashed. I needed a shovel to retrieve it..

Nice tutorial, thank you for sharing your knowledge. Just a note on the bearings going out on your sander. You can repair the bearings by taking the sander apart and measuring the bearings with those calipers of yours. Then go online and buy new ones to replace. It will run like new again, nice and smooth and much more quiet. Really enjoyed your videos, how about making a chef knife some time. That is something I'm very interested in myself. I haven't made a knife yet but I did just finish making a 2"xx72" grinder and it works great. You may want to make one yourself one day. They really grind down metal fast with a 36 grit belt. Take Care and thanks again!

Great work, vary impressive. I like the orange G10 and light wood color. I don’t think the burn aged affect is good. But maybe another aging technique could work. Like a random pitting texture to the handle. Hit it with a small chain or something. Or a stippling pattern to the handle. Thanks for the information and inspiration.
