    i failed to mention this but for those starting from scratch, try just playing the 2 draw pulsed slowly with good time. it will feel very mechanical at first but eventually develop into that sweet vibrato you're going for.

      To achieve bending while performing vibrato, should the tongue be retracted to the bending point or to deepen the bending is it only the work of the throat and not the tongue? thank you so much

    • @Harmonica123
      @Harmonica123  7 місяців тому +2

      for me it's much more of the throat, epiglotis taking over. I recommend moving the tongue into only microtonal bend movements and holding there while focusing on the throat. :)@@raegoul22

    Very useful tips! I fact to bend a note a little bit before a tremolo helped me to take my first vibrato. Thanks a lot!

  • @cincinnatipedalsteel4347

    A lot of videos on this people are just telling you to do the tremolo, which is not a vibrato. I can’t repeat the inward breath so fast so I’m just doing the micro bends without doing multiple breaths. Sounds fine to me and I can do it with blow notes, draws and bends.
    I’m new to playing maybe I’m not doing it right but I’ve been told what I do is called a mouth vibrato.

    Ronnie, thanks to this video, after many years attempting to reach a pleasant vibrato sound, I finally was able to make it! The reason for my previous failed attempts was that I was trying to modulate the pitch after reaching a FULL bend on the draw note. Consequently, my vibratos sounded like a sequence of small "punches", more like a tremolo than a true vibrato. Now, having watched your video, I noticed that if I started my vibrato on a HALF bend instead of a full bend, this will give the reed more room to modulate up and down, making it sound much more natural. Additionally, it probably takes 10 times less effort to vibrate the note. Thank you so much!

    Vibrato is great think, but really difficult. I have been practicing "butterfield" vibrato since June and now I'm able to play it really good. Of course it's not Butterfields level, but I'm getting closer.
    Great lesson!

  • @Harmonica123

    what i mean at 2:22 is that you don't want the note to be obstructed by that upward shape of the tongue I'm showing with my hand. at first..you want to have the tongue flat and work on good tone and closer to a tremolo effect. then, slowly try bending.

    • @Harmonica123
      @Harmonica123  Рік тому +1

      the bottom of the harp is best for that. -123 and 123. another bluesy sound would be dirty notes (combining 2 adjacent holes) on -2-3, -3-4 or -4-5

    Great lesson, Ronnie. I really enjoy your teaching style and the top content. I definitely need to work on my vibrato. One thing which has always concerned me about throat vibrato is whether it is bad for the vocal chords and voice. I don't find the inward cough at all intuitive and worry that I'm damaging something. Since I need my voice for work, I'm a little concerned that this technique may lead to damage. Thanks, as always, for the lesson!

    • @Harmonica123
      @Harmonica123  5 років тому

      no need to actually engage the vocal cords. simply pulse the air in trying to open and close the epiglottis at first until it learns to respond automatically.

    Very nice, Ronnie, but how do you do it on a draw without running out of breath right away? Am I missing something here?

    • @Harmonica123
      @Harmonica123  5 років тому

      slowly inhale using just enough air to activate the reed(s) and breathe from your diaphragm. practice makes perfect.

    Hey, anyone here who has exp. with a low E tuning? I just got my first low tuned harp, and I am used to my 2 Crossovers, in C and A. Now I got the Seydel Favorite in low E, and even though it sounds awesome, I kind of feel like the tuning is a bit different to play with. esp when I try to go from 2nd(/3rd) draw to 4th(/5th) blow, it just doesn`t sound right. Any idea why that is? Do I need different Tabs for the low E tuning, or am I just to stupid to play?

    • @Stern-warning
      @Stern-warning Рік тому +1

      Sorry if this really late but I think I know what you are referring too. Your Crossovers are “Modern comprise tuning “ which is better for single note runs and the Seydel Low keys come in a special tuning for chords for chord chugging unless you special order in a different tuning, their website says “Equal temperament” or “Just intonation” are available at extra cost. I purchased a Seydel Low C Bold tone and went down a rabbit hole of why harmonicas sound different even in the same key. The tunings refer to the intonation between the reeds and how closely the match the scale or whether a chord sounds flat or sharp or resonate without interference. So I hope that bad boy isn’t just sitting in your sock drawer it should be played and enjoyed but yes it does sound different it’s not you.

  • @D3R3LICTRECORDS

    Is it more throat action or diaphragm? I can't seem to get a straight answer from any decent harp players.

    • @Harmonica123
      @Harmonica123  2 роки тому

      to be specific, it is the epiglottis, in the throat, that is opening and closing when producing a "throat" vibrato.
