  • In this video I show you how to make an amazing easy overnight cholent! For those unfamiliar I would describe it as a Jewish stew. I combined inspiration from different sources. It is easy for anyone to make and you can adjust the thickness to your preference easily.
For this recipe you shall require the following:
Mixed Beans (raw) ( About 3 Cups is enough)
    Yellow Onion - 1/2
    Oil for cooking
    Star Anise Pods (2)
    Fresh Ginger - A thumb's worth
    Fresh Turmeric - A half pinky's worth ;)
    Garlic Cloves (5-6)
Red Potatoes - 2 large ones
    Carrots - 2 medium/large ones
Whole Dried Chilli (1-2 depending on spice preference)
Chickenless Broth (President's Choice) Veg stock is also fine. 1 Carton
Secret ingredient ;) - watch video to find out and take note! ;)
Tomato sauce of choice (About a Cup)
    Red Wine (About a Cup)
    Dates - Handful
    Fresh Ground Black Pepper
    Cumin - A dash
    Parsley for the finishing touch/garnish
I use a dutch oven for this, but you are welcome to try out your slow cooker.
    Notes:
No salt is needed if you are using the PC Chickenless Broth. Many people have a bad habit of added too much salt when there is already salt in so many products, so keep this in mind in general when in the kitchen. I like salt myself, but I try to keep this in mind if I'm using sauces and such with salt already in them. Plus there are many non-salt flavourings that are good enough.
I was at the end of my tomato sauce, so I added water to the jar to get out the residue and poured it in.
If you want it to come out thicker, just decrease the liquid or you are welcome to fire it off at the end. Just increase the heat and you can uncover it for the final hour or so.
With the overnight cooking it really brings out more of the flavours of all of the components. These are very simple ingredients but the end result is very satisfying.
Remember to follow my advice on the raw beans.

So one of the days after reheating this dish, the cutest little dachshund, whom we saw that evening, fell in love with the smells from this dish.
