The most amazing thing: This was literally the "red phone". When it rang, it was likely a launch order call. I can't imagine the spectrum of initial fear of a launch order - on a phone that likely rarely rang - to confusion, to sentimental fatherly joy is a cascade of emotions that only someone is boundlessly professional and ceaselessly compassionate could marshal through in literally seconds to maybe a minute. He was the right man, at the right time, for the right situation. Imagine thinking you were answering the call that triggered the end of the world only to end it beaming of the hope that is seen through a child's eyes. RIP Colonel Shoup! And God bless the men and women of the United States and Canada who are part of NORAD!
My fondest memory while growing up in the 195's and the 1960's is when my father up here in Canada every Christmas would tell me to look up in the sky to watch for Santa Claus's sleigh. He promised me that some day I would see it.
At 42 years old, I now see everything through my daughters eyes. We have her track santa every year. I wear a Santa hat and tracker sweatshirt to work every year. Our daughter is special needs, but one thing she loves is Christmas!
Is anyone else watching this video on Christmas Eve? Also every year since I have found out about this I have build a mock lego NORAD base made out of, you guessed it, legos!! And it has been a holiday tradition of mine to build it and to pick up Santa on radar. I even have my own fighter jets!! And every year has added something new to the base. This year was quite unique as I added something new to every section of the base. The garage was a speeder bike, the command center was more decorations in the conference room and a improved coffee maker, the main courtyard was some new targets for target practice, the runways for the jets were lights on the end to guide them in and in the hanger where the jets are is a fuel pipeline.
Blessings in an abundance of the faith. I salute you. 🙏😘 Grace and peace be unto you and to this place. Thank you NORAD for my Christmas’. I love you for that. 🙏 Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and personal saviour??? I do. Be sober, be vigilant, your enemy prowls around like a roaring lion seeking whom he may devour. I pray for safety and alertness throughout the heavens, the earth and the firmaments in Jesus name. Amen 🙏 Will you believe and receive Jesus Christ as your LORD and personal saviour??? I do. ❤🤍💙

This is one of those stories I look up and re-listen to every year. It is part of my Christmas tradition.
Surprised it has so few comments.

It wasn’t the red phone that rang. It was made up 😞

It's good to know that NORAD keeps an eye on and have "Big Red One" escorted through United States and Canadian Airspace ever Christmas Eve. ❤

1955 was Autovon even around then. With DSN couldn't happen. Toddlers can't place flash override calls
