Great video (like always) and technique!!! I love it!!! Is something different and faster to get a finished miniature. In my case I have a full-time job, wife and two kids that one of them have special needs. So, my time is very minimal for me to sit and have a full session of painting like I will love to have. The only time that I have is when everyone is sleeping. I see miniature painting like cooking. Some people have time to prepare a full meal, others like me some times only have the time to prepare a Pb and J sandwich. The thing is, there's no one method to paint a miniature. Like cooking, there's is no one way to cook for example chicken. There hundreds of ways to cook it. Some ways take hours, others take half of the time. The important thing is is what you like and the way you like to paint, not what others like. Imagine that DaVinci, Rembrandt, Van Gog and Michelangelo painted the same way because they think that there's only one way to do it. Everything will be boring and without of purpose or self expression. Sometimes we forget the meaning of the word hobby..... "is a past time to enjoy relaxation.... not to create stress". In the end is what works for you not what works for others. Not every time what works for one person will work for you. Like I said, awesome video! Thank you for taking the time to share your experience and talent with us!!! I can wait for the next video!!!
@DonSuratos Yes, I agree. Interestingly what you have done here is step one, the zenithal (grisaille) has been transformed to a zenithal bruinaille with the first contrast paint application to act as the complementary underpainting with reinforced highlights again with white before the blue is applied. In general using complementary colours with contrast/glazed layers avoids the issue of mixing directly two complementary colours, which can create muddy colours due to the pigment ingredients of both colours. I'll stop there with the art talk.
Ive had a lot of fun experimenting with speed paint medium the last few months. For a recent Battletech paint scheme I thinned Magic Blue to 1:8 paint to medium and came out with this nice sky blue.
I found a 1:1 ratio of Tyrian Navy to medium results in almost the exact same blue as the 143rd legion blue guardsman scheme. Using it now and my coats are finally highlighted well lol. I'm so bad at doing folded clothes right. I'm also using the Warpaints Fanatic acrylics - they're fantastic in their opacity but sometimes I wonder if they're TOO opaque. Like I'll thin Night Sky blue down like 1:6 for a glaze type thing and it still covers like crazy.
I just did my first chop on chop and love it. I'm not going to be a professional painter and slapchop was good for me but chop on chop gave me another step up so thank you
I love slapchopping, because it is another way to paint. I had the speed paint form scale75. They do not cover as well as citadel or army painter for most part. But they are realygood for multi layer on top of a "grisaille"
When you have the fundamentals of art and you have clarity of what you want to communicate and how, I think that's the real key or path for making good art. Slapchop is one more technique to achieve this. Those who insist on saying whether a technique really gives you true art, is because they don't understand the above point. Art is a form of communication. Be it through words, an image, a video. This is just one more variable, but not a definitive one. A miniature, a canvas, a song. Each one is a universe of its own. And curiously, how much do we really know about how each of these was made? How many golden demons do we not know that it was made with a Drybrushing or a Slapshop? Questioning a technique is like questioning a path to a result. If the result is great, why question the technique or tool? Great video as always Don!
also i don't have a lot of time for or a great setup to paint. i like the look of slapchop and really appreciate the consistency and time savings. so any technique that can make this process looking better and better is totally amazing for me, especially if it's additive. haters can go away lol
I used your double slapchop method to paint a troll/ogre 3D print and it turned out amazing. I'm extremely happy with it. Only took a few hours. I just want to have the minis I own look good and cohesive. I'm not trying to become a "great painter" like the highlighted comment suggests. I'm just a guy who enjoys colouring up some figures on the weekend. I'm never going to win a golden demon and mini painting isn't the focus of my life, it's just a fun hobby to me and I like to play with different techniques. Next up I'll probably try slapchopping an Ork killteam.
Bro. Slap chop is great. I see youtubers enter the golden demon who are monumentally better than I'll ever be and they still don't win, really the only thing to worry about is, do you like your army and did you have fun painting it?
Dare I say it, but...I've got a unit of Cryx Bane Thralls giving me stink eye on my table that I do believe I'm going to try this technique with just to get them out of the way. They're just infantry, I can justify using this technique for them. I'm already thinking about how to do this as we speak!
@DonSuratos yung drybrush na prime from black to white, pwede na pang display parang black and white and datinf hehehehe, salamat master sa pag share mo ng mga kaalaman mo isa kang alamat brother🙂 God Bless You🙏
this new series on double slapchop or slapchop on slapchop is fantastic. would really appreciate an idea of what base speedpaint/highlight speedpaint combo you think works well. or just more videos on this idea.
You always say: you can do chop on chop on chop (x3). Would love to see it! Also, if insted drybrush you just carefully zenital with the airbrush, it would be a bit similar doesn't it? Maybe the edgest wont be as highlighted...🤔
The mini after the first round of slapchop looks a lot like mine when I'm applying my standard process: I prime in a dark chocolate browm, then airbrush a zenithal gradiant of lighter brown up to ivory. I then apply a light white drybrush for extra crispiness. Only then do I deem my minis ready for the contrast paints. The brown gradient instead of whote on black is because translucent paints don't look good at all over black paint. Using a dark colour instead of black gives more than enough contrast.
@DonSuratos How will you know what first chop you can put underneat? I mean not every color works with the main color you want. Is there some list or metid or else to onow ehat will eork and how it eill sort of look at the end?
I have a good idea what colors would work great as the base or first slapchop, and what colors will work as second slapchop. It requires basic grasp of color theory and most importantly, how the paints “behave”. However, this is all “theory”, until we actually try the color combinations. The best way to know is to paint more and experiment. So, I will make more videos. Cheers! Great question man. 😊🎨🎨🎨

I'm loving slapchop, but I think I understand where the negative vibes from these people. They're probably individuals on the learning path trying to get better at traditional layered acrylic painting but realizing that their favourite youtubers who make it look easy are actually terrifyingly talented painters and that getting a perfectly smooth 'eavy metal look is actually exceptionally difficult and time consuming. Then slapchop comes along and gets fantastic visual results with (comparatively) little skill so they become frustrated that an "easy" method can surpass what they're currently capable of so they lash out. I'm not saying this is how one SHOULD be reacting, but I think it's probably the psychology at play here. Yes, slapchop won't win a competition. Yes, traditional painting can reach a higher peak - but most people aren't Sam Lenz. Me doing normal acrylic layers vs. a slapchop means the layer approach will look worse cause I'm not that good at painting.
@@Weaver_GamesI understand that, it’s like the guys that complain about e-bikes just they got really good at riding their 13 speed bike. Like cool bro but some of us just need a mode of transportation, not bragging points.
Quick question Don : what do you think of using zenithal White in the airbrush instead of a drybrush for the second step of chop on chop? Whould it still work as fine or not on your opinion 🤔. Shurely the airbrush may spare you even more time in the painting process and give smoother blends but maybe I'm missing something
Full zenithal with an airbrush ( or spraycan ) is fine. I am just enjoying my Foxbite drybrush so much. If you watch my older videos, I prefer zenithal most of the time ( but with spraycans ). 😊
What first coat instead of Hardened Leather would you recommend for painting Salamanders space marines? And what green speed paint would you use for the second "actual" coat?
@@DonSuratos Hmm, let's say warm and muted colors? I'm not too sure but im trying to get it close to the box art of salamanders and I trust your knowledge 👍 Love your videos btw
Instead of slap chop the first time. You also can prime black and use the sponge with a redish brown, to highlight the higher areas. Then drybrush with white. After that, slap chop. Thats how i do it
What I realised after a few chop faces, is that i don't like choped faces 😅. They look way too dark. What I usually do now, is white underpainting for skin and faces, skin SP, maybe some wash over, then chop all over, another skin tone and highlighting. And at the end it looks like a clown anyway, gotta practice more 😀 Maybe one question, when you do the highlighting, do you mix fanatics with stabilizer on the wett palet?
I know it's the accent (not being disrespectful; I can only speak one language), but I love Don sounds like he is saying "slopchop". I think that what we should call it; it sounds like a better description because of the way most of us apply the technic. Keep up the great videos!
Comparison is the theif of joy. Ive been painting for twenty five years or so. Im a decent painter. But how i wish i had learned not to compare my work with other peoples. Id have been so much happier in my painting.
Lol- you're obviously growing in popularity to be attracting all of this negativity. Keep rockin on with the great videos Don, and don't listen to those with closed minds! Your tutorials are excellent!
Great discovering the Chop on Chop. Do you thing the first paint cover with sepia color or dark brown would work for something "more difficult" like black armor from Black Templar space marines?
@DonSuratos Thanks for answering me Don! I would love it for sure!!! Kind of grimdark black templars damaged by battle as you did in this Ultramarine would be something I would love being painted by you. In any case, thanks a lot for sharing this double chop method!
@DonSuratos An Orc skin painted with this method could be useful for fantasy and sci-fi minis/people (from WH or not). But death guard minis are also awesome. I would be patient to your next video, activating notification =)
That would be brunaille underpainting. In fact what he's done here is use a classic zenithal 'grisaille' to create a 'brunaille' from the 'grisaille' with contrast paint and then apply a white highlight to take advantage of the 2nd round of contrast but this time using a complementary colour. I do a zenithal of complementary colours on the underpaining and then apply glazes on top, similar to this approach using contrast.
wouldnt it be an even better step to not use white for the second drybrush but a light color (e.g. ice yellow or sunny skin tone). That way you have unique shadow tones (brownish tone) and you have more realistic environmental light tones than pure white
There is no difference between contrast vs layering vs glazing vs oil painting, vs drybrushing. Its all a technique to be used. No one is better than the other.
I have zero issues with the technique. Whatever it takes to get attractive minis on the table. However, you know there are some words or phrases that immediately irritate you? As if they're making your brain itch? Things like "can I axe you a question" or "irregardless" or "expresso"... Slapchop is such an abominable term. When preshading and tinting is an ancient technique, why the need to give it a stupid name as if it has just been created? Okay, rant over, I'll go back to the old people's home now. @DonSuratos, nice tutorial as always.
Actually man! You might find my old videos, wherein I am refusing to use the “slapchop” name when it became popular. I cannot remember which video, but I also did not like the name. But big channels made it famous, so what can we do bro. 😅
Bruh that argument is dumb depending on how you look at it. If your a painter and PAINTING is your hobby than sure I can see that argument to an extent. But if you don’t really care about the painting part of it and just painting cuz a Tournament requires painting minis than why say it’s Dumb. At that point painting is just a huge waste of time as all that person wants to do is play and not spend weeks painting an army. Don ignore the negatives, you just keep up that great work and keep those videos coming.
I can understand why people would think slapchop is bad. If you only leave it at the slapchop step it looks unfinished. You gotta do some cleanup/ finishing steps
@Averagejoepainting in a Sense I can concurr with you too. Simple slapchop or even chop on chop May leave something to be desired but in the end Is all a matter of how much time you whant to spend in a piece. Even with acrylics you Will get the same Sense of "incomplete" if you give yourself Just and hour to Paint . Speedpaints are not to blame for the simplicity of the piece. Time Is. And I rechon that Just with a bit more highlight on the face and shoulders the piece whould have looked 3 times Better than before with less time investiment. As Always. More time = Better (I'm not saying you suggested that the slapchop Is bad. I'm Just giving my two cents about the topic ;p )
Being rude to somebody because you disagree with their take is the dumbest thing of all. I really don't know how people forgot to disagree without being disrespectful.
Yeap. I took up Fine Arts in college. I think there is NO need for art jargons, if the main objective is to simply make people pick up miniature painting as a hobby. 😊
This community can be so weird man. Who cares how someone paints their minis??? At the end of the day if they enjoy playing the game and don't want to spend a ton of time painting then let them paint that way. Heck even if they do enjoy painting whats wrong with this way of painting??? Not everyone wants to get to a display piece/competition piece.
"Don't use this method because you will not reach your full potential." That's such an out-dated way of thinking. It's like saying you shouldnt play a videogame on anything but extreme difficulty bacause you will learn better. Sure, but you also have to commit more resources like time and effort - both a luxury in short supply thesedays; all so you can do it to the absolute maximum potential? nah fam play how you wanna play and Paint how you wanna paint. smh people gatekeep the weirdest stuff thesedays.
Gatekeepers that I know are NOT the brightest! Some are NOT even good at what they do. They are mostly people with low self esteem, that put people down to make themselves feel good. 😊
You're a great painter, but I don't think you're right to say it's a dumb argument only because you don't agree with it. You're forgetting you were a beginner once, and slapchop, in my opinion, prevents new painters from learning key concepts that a top painter already has. You can integrate slapchop no problem, but you already have the key concepts for painting well learnt and solid. I am not saying slapchop is good or bad per se. I only believe it isn't a technique to start with as a beginner, although not everyone has to aim to be a contest winning painter, that's true.
It is a dumb argument. I do not get your point. It seems that your long statement is full of contradictions. I totally disagree that slapchop prevents new painters from learning key concepts that a top painter already has. First, NOT everyone aim to be a top painter. Then you said not everyone has to aim to be a contest winning painter. Second, slapchop OR painting with transparent / translucent paints, like contrast, speedpaints, inks and oil glazes, will actually teach you ( eventually ) how layering translucent paints requires knowledge in lighting and color theory. So if you insist learning traditional painting with acrylics is prevented because of slapchop, then your argument is very FLAWED. You seem to be arguing for the sake of arguing. 🙃
@@DonSuratos Lol yeah man, it's even funnier when being presented with a different opinion is considered arguing.😆 But anyway, I do enjoy watching your videos and your stuff. It's just a disagreement on something specific.
@ Nah… you were simply trying to “paint” me as a bad guy. Looking down on the commenter. However you were playing it safe not to call me out directly as you wanted, thus your long statement was all over the place. Bruh… I am used to being painted the bad guy. Yes, slapchop won't win a competition. Yes, traditional painting can reach a higher peak - but most people aren't Sam Lenz. Me doing normal acrylic layers vs. a slapchop means the layer approach will look worse cause I'm not that good at painting.
They probably took months to learn how to prime a model 😂
@@DonSuratos thank you wery much 🙏
What first coat instead of Hardened Leather would you recommend for painting Salamanders space marines? And what green speed paint would you use for the second "actual" coat?
Hmmm… do you want your green armor warm or cool? Then do you want the second green vibrant or muted? 😊
@@DonSuratos Hmm, let's say warm and muted colors? I'm not too sure but im trying to get it close to the box art of salamanders and I trust your knowledge 👍 Love your videos btw
Great❤
Thanks! 😊🎨🎨🎨
Instead of slap chop the first time. You also can prime black and use the sponge with a redish brown, to highlight the higher areas. Then drybrush with white. After that, slap chop. Thats how i do it
@@ttoo1830 Cool method man! Sponge 🧽 work is a little bit messier though. 😊
Cool 🖌
Thanks man! 😊🎨🎨🎨
What base paints in the first chop would you use for painting Black Templars in this method please?
Black Templars? Depends if you want your black armor to look cool or warm bro. ☺️
❤️🤘🔥👍
😊🎨🎨🎨
What I realised after a few chop faces, is that i don't like choped faces 😅. They look way too dark. What I usually do now, is white underpainting for skin and faces, skin SP, maybe some wash over, then chop all over, another skin tone and highlighting. And at the end it looks like a clown anyway, gotta practice more 😀
Maybe one question, when you do the highlighting, do you mix fanatics with stabilizer on the wett palet?
Yes! I love the stabilizer and any medium actually. I have a ton of old “how to glaze” videos bro. 😊
I know it's the accent (not being disrespectful; I can only speak one language), but I love Don sounds like he is saying "slopchop". I think that what we should call it; it sounds like a better description because of the way most of us apply the technic. Keep up the great videos!
Hahaha! You are right about the accent. Makes it fun for me too. 😉 I am aware I pronounce a in slapchop as o! I find it… hmmm… more apt. 😅
@@DonSuratos that is a perfect response. Love your work and attitude.
@@fisherguy45 Thanks man! Appreciate the support! 😊🎨🎨🎨
@ Thanks man! Appreciate the support. 😊🎨🎨🎨
Comparison is the theif of joy. Ive been painting for twenty five years or so. Im a decent painter. But how i wish i had learned not to compare my work with other peoples. Id have been so much happier in my painting.
Sooooooo true. Unless you can manage the feeling, good or bad. 😊
Couldn’t you do this by with using a warm reddish brown primer with slap chop over top of it?
Yes! Most definitely! Should give you the same results. 😊
@@DonSuratos definitely gonna do some experimenting. You got really good results, keep up the great work!
@@kevinr8953I have a few videos with “brown underpainting” that you might find useful. 😊
Lol- you're obviously growing in popularity to be attracting all of this negativity. Keep rockin on with the great videos Don, and don't listen to those with closed minds! Your tutorials are excellent!
Thank you for the support! 😊🎨🎨🎨 I rarely get these kinda of comments actually. Weird stuff! 😊
Can you do a video on thinning your paints?
Great discovering the Chop on Chop. Do you thing the first paint cover with sepia color or dark brown would work for something "more difficult" like black armor from Black Templar space marines?
I have Black Templars! Shall we paint that next? 😊
@DonSuratos Thanks for answering me Don! I would love it for sure!!! Kind of grimdark black templars damaged by battle as you did in this Ultramarine would be something I would love being painted by you. In any case, thanks a lot for sharing this double chop method!
@@MaxiTurb0 Welcome! Now let me find my Black Templars. Thinking of painting an Orc or DeathGuard first though. 😊
@DonSuratos An Orc skin painted with this method could be useful for fantasy and sci-fi minis/people (from WH or not). But death guard minis are also awesome. I would be patient to your next video, activating notification =)
@ You are making me excited to sort my Warhammer minis! I have a lot tossed in a couple of bins. 😅 Thanks man!
How do you think this would compare to using a brown acrylic underpaint (instead of grey) and drybrushing over that?
That would be brunaille underpainting. In fact what he's done here is use a classic zenithal 'grisaille' to create a 'brunaille' from the 'grisaille' with contrast paint and then apply a white highlight to take advantage of the 2nd round of contrast but this time using a complementary colour. I do a zenithal of complementary colours on the underpaining and then apply glazes on top, similar to this approach using contrast.
i tried this, taking some notes from NJMMarco, using a colored undercoat on mine, and it turned out great
I have a ton of colored ( brown / purple ) underpainting videos. Older videos though. 😊
How can we get similar effects with red armor?
Hmmm… I need to try. Brown underpainting might not work. 😬
Chop on.
Haha! 😊🎨🎨🎨
I was just about to write a comment to the previous video. What would a double slapchap look like with 28mm or 32mm miniatures..... XD
Haha! Will paint more 32mm minis! 😊🎨🎨🎨
Choppy chop on a dreadnauhght! please!
Flat surfaces!
But I have to buy! Not cheap man! 😅
wouldnt it be an even better step to not use white for the second drybrush but a light color (e.g. ice yellow or sunny skin tone). That way you have unique shadow tones (brownish tone) and you have more realistic environmental light tones than pure white
That will work, specially if you plan not to paint highlights. But the apeedpaint on top, won’t be as vibrant. 😊
I use brown primer for my slapchop for the same reason
Yes! I have some older videos with brown underpainting. ☺️
There is no difference between contrast vs layering vs glazing vs oil painting, vs drybrushing. Its all a technique to be used. No one is better than the other.
You are right! 😊🎨🎨🎨
So far i only uave been building and modding minis ... But i might give this a try and see if I wont fuck it up
Well, it's a style and has a look. I am not personally a fun but it delivers results.
Not a “fun”? 🤔
@DonSuratos Hmm yeah...wish I could blame autocorrect "not a fan" then
@ 😅 Oh okay. Got confused there for a sec. 😂
@DonSuratos, nice tutorial as always.
Actually man! You might find my old videos, wherein I am refusing to use the “slapchop” name when it became popular. I cannot remember which video, but I also did not like the name. But big channels made it famous, so what can we do bro. 😅
I hate elitism/gatekeeping of any kind, so I'm glad you're calling out these dumbasses lol.
@@exiaxzero Hahahaha! Hate is such a strong word man. Annoying is more apt in my opinion.
Yeap… dumb argument man. Thanks! 😊🎨🎨🎨
If only this was painting 🙄🙄🙄🥴🥴😂😂😂
Hahahaha! NO painting here… ZERO! 😅🤣😂
I can understand why people would think slapchop is bad. If you only leave it at the slapchop step it looks unfinished. You gotta do some cleanup/ finishing steps
Yes… but double slapchop is a tad better. 😅
@ o for sure, not saying I agree with it just that I understand the thought.
@ Yeah me too. Specially super rushed slapchop. 😊
@ o for sure, think you said what I meant a lot better than I did.
Being rude to somebody because you disagree with their take is the dumbest thing of all. I really don't know how people forgot to disagree without being disrespectful.
It’s the social media age man. I am a blogger since 2009, so I am used to these kinds of people. I enjoy engaging with them to be honest. 😊
It's called en grisaille.
It is bro. Amusing actually. ☺️🎨🎨🎨
@@DonSuratos Contradictions? If you say so... :)
@ 😅🤣😂 So funny when people like to argue for the sake of arguing. Amusing stuff. 🙃
@@DonSuratos Lol yeah man, it's even funnier when being presented with a different opinion is considered arguing.😆
But anyway, I do enjoy watching your videos and your stuff.
Blogger since 2009. 😅 Again, the commenter’s opinion is DUMB, and your initial statement is so FLAWED. 🙃 Okay, not let me enjoy my Netflix time. 👋🏽
