my mother and my aunt both cried when I showed them this song. Their grandfather and his 13 brothers died in a coal mine collapses ages ago. It took them back and broke their hearts. In a good way.
Heavens. I'm so sorry to hear this tragic piece of history. Our love to your family. Can't help but think of people like your great uncles and great grandfather when we sing it every night. Thanks for showing them our song and I'm glad it reached you all.
I am so so sorry that happened to your family> Is it okay to ask, can you tell us more about them? They don't die till they're forgotten, I heard someone say today.
On July 22, 1972, a fire broke out at the Blacksville Number 1 mine in Monongalia County. It was sparked by a continuous mining machine that came into contact with an electric wire.
My grandpap died just before I was born so I never got to meet him. All I have of him are some heirlooms and stories that were passed down. This song reminds me so much of the stories my great grandmother would tell me that he told her when she was young:(
I'm from south west PA right near WV. I have a lot of family and friends that worked in the coal mines and still do. I'm one of the only males in my family that's not been workin in the mines yet. I do excavation for a living so I still dig but not coal and not in a mine..but believe me that them ditches are dangerous. I've been in more than a few that collapsed. It's not a fun experience, I'll tell ya that.
Philmont scout ranch cyphers mine is playing this song as part of their stomp this year so like thousands of Boy Scouts and other people will hear this amazing song.
Right. So I'm pretty sure you dudes came through my line at the Harris Teeter in Carrboro, NC tonight. [We talked about death metal and that one kid who apparently eats plastic.] If this is in fact the same band which you called yourselves, this is not at all what I was expecting, but I really enjoy it! Nice to have met you. :]
LYRICS: Jesse got trapped in a coal mine Digging in the dark black pearl Jesse got trapped in a coal mine Never did marry his girl There ain't no air and there ain't no light And there ain't no way to make it out alive His wedding was planned for the 5th of July But Jesse got trapped in a coal mine and never did marry his girl Your hands gets black and your eyes get burned And your lungs get tired and poor It draws you in like a opium den It beckons you back for more There ain't no air and there ain't no light And there ain't no way to make it out alive His wedding was planned for the 5th of July But Jesse got trapped in a coal mine and never did marry his girl Down, down under West Virginia Down, down in the pitch black earth Down, down on her knees she cried My love is somewhere in that mountain Jesse got trapped in a coal mine Digging in the dark black pearl Jesse got trapped in a coal mine Never did marry his girl She held out hope for a couple of months That he was still living somewhere And he'd put up the strongest kind of fight He'd dig himself out with the dynamite He'd finally be free on the 5th of July But Jesse got trapped in the coal mine and never did marry his girl Down, down under West Virginia Down, down in the pitch black earth Down, down on her knees she cried Down, down deep below the surface Down, down by the Mason-Dixon line Down, down on her knees she cried My love is somewhere in that mountain
Funny. This was my friend's favorite song. And he killed in a cave in a few years back. I already know that bastard laughed when he realized. Miss you brother. Save a seat for me.
I have never heard of your band, but I found you none the less. I found your band on Last Fm as a similar artist to The Devil Makes Three. I must say that I'm very impressed with your music. This, so far, is my favorite.
Heather Mc Erlean same! I found them listening to The Dead South. This song is definitely my favorite as well but Bank Robbers Nursery Rhyme, I'm going to work on Maggie's farm forever and Meet me by the hay stack are so close to tieing. I love there somber, dark, depressing tones. The Dead South and Tyler Childers are my work hard music and Good Night Texas is my end of the day relax and unwind band!
@@robertwest4299 I liked all of those. I went on a listening spree. I really enjoy his music now. I also found another band I liked some of their music that reminds me of a kind of darker music making ... Reverend Peyton's Big Damn Band. Currently, "Raise A Little Hell" is my favorite. I love The Dead South too. I have been listening to them for a while now. I also love Nathaniel Ratecliff & The Night Sweats.
I would agree but I have a cousin who played steel guitar on the Gran ol opry with willie and the like. I grew up with abusive levels of steel guitar and shows where it was all steel guitar players. Its okay as an accompanying instrument but in and of itself id rather get ass fucked by a gorilla.
ok i recently rediscovered this song and i’m just now realizing jesse most likely had a pickaxe and could probably have mined his way out. and another thing, if people knew he was trapped in there why didnt they also help him mine his way out? other than that, good song
Oh,,, yeah when a mine collapses there's no way out. He most likely got crushed by the rock and if he didn't he would have suffocated long before he could have gotten out. He had Dynamite and a pick yes but mine collapses are no joke Edit: Also yes they most likely would have attempted to get him and the others that got trapped (he most DEFINITELY wasn't the only one) but the rock around it at that point has lost a lot of its stability and would have put more workers at risk
The amount of people thinking that Jesse actually died in the mine, is astonishing. If you listen to the lyrics you will hear that he made it out alive, on the day of his wedding, but whatever he learned from this close call made him leave the idea of him being dead unchanged. The twist at the end makes the story much more interesting :D
"My love is somewhere in that mountain..."
You can hear the hopelessness of this poor girl grow, and it's bone-chilling.
I know right, it's one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. They deserve way more credit!
That's the part where the dust hits my eyes as well

yeah, I just got back and the stomp was one of my favorite parts
+Nord Accord I do! Saw Ruby yesterday at closing campfire.
After Cypher's Mine, I saw Honey at Cito and we talked for a bit. She was cool.

I grew up, live, and work in Appalachia...songs like this remind me of how good the rest of the US has it. I wouldn't have it any other way.
Well uh, looks like Jesse's Girl is finally single now
A friend made me discover that music band, what a wonderful music 🪕🍁🙏🏼
This has got to be one of the saddest songs I have ever heard in my Life... But, you guys are awesome.
LYRICS:
Jesse got trapped in a coal mine
Digging in the dark black pearl
Jesse got trapped in a coal mine
Never did marry his girl
There ain't no air and there ain't no light
And there ain't no way to make it out alive
His wedding was planned for the 5th of July
But Jesse got trapped in a coal mine and never did marry his girl
Your hands gets black and your eyes get burned
And your lungs get tired and poor
It draws you in like a opium den
It beckons you back for more
There ain't no air and there ain't no light
And there ain't no way to make it out alive
His wedding was planned for the 5th of July
But Jesse got trapped in a coal mine and never did marry his girl
Down, down under West Virginia
Down, down in the pitch black earth
Down, down on her knees she cried
My love is somewhere in that mountain
Jesse got trapped in a coal mine
Digging in the dark black pearl
Jesse got trapped in a coal mine
Never did marry his girl
She held out hope for a couple of months
That he was still living somewhere
And he'd put up the strongest kind of fight
He'd dig himself out with the dynamite
He'd finally be free on the 5th of July
But Jesse got trapped in the coal mine and never did marry his girl
Down, down under West Virginia
Down, down in the pitch black earth
Down, down on her knees she cried
Down, down deep below the surface
Down, down by the Mason-Dixon line
Down, down on her knees she cried
My love is somewhere in that mountain
Thank you!
First time listening to this with headphones on and it is a whole different experience.
My favorite song off their first album. Not a bad cut on it.
Without doubt, these are now my favourite band.
Makes me feel so sad. I find myself singing 'my love is somewhere in that mountain' pretty often.
gives me chills every time.
What a great band ...full of majesty and grace. Remind me of The Band around 1969 ( The brown album ) . Real class ...
What a great band! It's sad that they are so under viewed.
This should honestly in Fallout 76
This song is 13/10
