    Loving your tutorials etc., hints and tips and all that, highly entertaining and informative. I'm on Elite Dangerous Horizons on Playstation 4, it just came out this month so I'm still junking it as a mercenary thug and getting my head round the basics. Top work fella, thanks! ''You were only supposed to blow the bloody doors off!'' hahahah! Nice one! I'm actually looking for a 'free the hostages' scenario and wondering if using those hatch breaker limpets would asphyxiate the hostages or freeze dry them first. Hmmm...

    great vid, thanks for the research, was wondering if it was actually worth going for the larger limpet controllers. The biggest problem I see with gearing up for pirating is that it takes so many internal mods, severely limiting your cargo space. You need an interdictor, you need a limpet controller, you need shields, and somewhere in all of this you're supposed to have room for cargo. If you go for the larger shields or limpet controllers, then it's that much less cargo you can carry. They really need to make it a utility mount so you can have some room left for other stuff.

    • @ChaosWulff
      @ChaosWulff  9 років тому

      Aye, It would make more sense in my eyes to do so but then I think they may WANT to make it harder to be a pirate... In the end though it adds another dynamic to gearing up your ship for piracy... Should you take more cargo or a better controller? If you have more cargo it'll take exponentially more time to fill then if you have less cargo space and a better controller... Unless I've got that wrong but I believe I haven't.

      How big is a limpet? How big is a cargo hatch? May be they require storage for those limpets.
      And yet a Point Defence Turret is a utility mount bit of kit. This needs ammo -> storage.
      I cannot find any consistency here, but that depends on my / your assumptions and starting point for any logic that I / you may apply to them.
      One of the difficulties I see is the use of the 1 tonne mass used as the minimum for measuring. However, again there is inconsistency where the fuel scoop has no mass but still requires internal compartment space; it seems reasonable that such a bit of kit is not insignificant in mass nor of volume. The concept of an internal compartment is probably being overloaded here. In regards to the fuel scoop it would be more logical, in my mind to spec the ship has having (or not) having an attachment point for a scoop with the latter having mass and for this to be taken into account when fitting out as we do for other fittings.
      But in designing a game, selling it and earning money from it there will be trade offs: at best only 80% of customers will find the result acceptable. I have no idea what ED requirements, specifications, designs were or are. More interestingly would be the thinking behind all of it - I have a professional interest, I do software engineering, specialising in C++.

    • @steveragnar1155
      @steveragnar1155 9 років тому +1

      Commander ChaosWulff 'they' being the designers / implementers of ED? I'm OK for them to 'want' to make piracy harder but if they do not get the overall balance reasonable then they will lose potential sales.
      Regarding mike_b's point. But what ship are we talking about? The Viper or Anaconda? If you go pirating you decide which ship too use as well as to how to fit it out for this purpose. So I agree with you to a large extent that it does make for an interesting dynamic where the player has to do a bit thinking (analysis?). People find this enjoyable, some not I gather.
      But as it has been said before, this game is not everyone's cup of tea! You pays your money and takes your chance: such is life.

    • @ChaosWulff
      @ChaosWulff  9 років тому

      Steve Ragnar Hmmm... Now that you draw the comparison to the point defense, it does make the whole logic of a controller which is essentially a glorified RC unit requiring an internal slot of so many tones (minimum 2 tones) and what is essentially a gum turret capable of shooting down drones and missiles only requiring a 0 tone external mount then I think things are sorely mixed up here... Now I understand that the Point Defense needs to be a utility mount so you can choose it's position on your hull as its positioning is very important (covering the top or bottom of your ship)
      Having the controller as an internal module AND requiring cargo space does seem a little overkill upon reflection as you already have the large internal bay to house the controller... Is it so hard to imagine it would also house a set amount of drones in said bay? I imagine this may have been the initial idea but for some reason was scrapped... I say this as it seems way to obvious to not have been thought of before.
      As it stands with the way this mechanic works it does really restrict a potential pirates choice of ship based on internal compartments... I think this slightly conflicts with the 'play the way you want' message they are going for... But then again this is by no means a deal breaker for me or many other players... It is just something else we have to contend with in the harsh universe of Elite: Dangerous.

      Well in terms of pirate usefulness, both, the Viper and the Anaconda are terrible ships for pirating. The Viper has too little cargo room, and the Anaconda is too slow and immobile. The Python might have made for a good pirating ship until the recent nerfs, now it's too slow imo to be really effective, even if it does offer better staying power. Staying power is of very little interest for a pirate, being able to run away is the paramount importance, with cargo space being a very close second. This means for pirating, you're pretty much relegated to multi-purpose ships as they offer the best balance of combat effectiveness and cargo capacity. IRL, pirates rarely opperated large ships, typically taking smaller, faster and more maneuverable ships, and this pretty much holds up in game, weather they designed it that way or not. Currently the Cobra is probably the best ship, as it is the fastest, has 4 hardpoints and enough cargo capacity. Asp is good, but it's lack of speed and less than optimal maneuverability. So basically the best pirate ships are all still small ships, we'll have to see what the Ferdy is like when they release it. The problem is, the smaller ships, even the Cobra, have limited internal slots. Pirating is a risky business, as it should be, so to run out there without the added protection of shields, especially on a ship that is lacking speed, such as the Adder or the ASP, you're really rolling the dice, as the first well piloted Viper that comes along is basically you're death knell. You don't have to take the biggest shields, but a mid range set is at least preferable. Then there's the cargo limpet controller itself. You already showed how poor the smaller versions are, so they're out. The moment you hit the target, you're on a timer before the Po Po show up, which you need to be out of there by then. This means selecting a higher grade of controller isn't necessarily a matter of convenience. 40 seconds per limpet is pretty bad when you're on a time crunch, especially for it to drop only 2 or 3 cargo, and since NPCs typically carry a lot of worthless crap with a few pieces of nicer cargo mixed in, it's dicey you're going to get anything useful.
      Now granted,you don't necessarily have to use a cargo limpet. This wasn't much of an issue back in alpha when there were no cargo limpets. However, since it was easier to just kill the target to get it's cargo to spill out, this lead to a lot of crying on the forums to FD about traders being killed for their cargo so FD changed it and added in limpet controllers, so it's not as if FD designed these ships with it in mind. Taking out cargo hatches manually is still feasible, if however unlikely against anything other than a large cargo hauler or Anaconda. The limpets themselves aren't really an issue. You stock up on them taking up cargo space, yeah, but they're cheap and disposable, so once you've struck paydirt, you can easily discard the rest and just grab the cargo without fretting about it much. But lets look at the types of mods a pirate is going to be interested in. There's only one mod that goes in to the utility mounts that is crucial to being a pirate and that is the cargo scanner. The only other mods that might be considered are heatsink launchers and chaff. Both are nice additions, but not really a necessity. There's 3 mods that a pirate has to consider on putting into his internal compartments other than cargo, and they're all far more important.
      -- Shields: No brainer. You need something to increase you're toughness and soak up damage while you're grabbing the goods. Your reliance on them will depend on the kind of ship you're flying. A faster ship that can run away is less reliant on them compared to a slower ship, such as the ASP which is more likely to be stuck sitting around and fighting.
      -- FSD interdictor: Having the ability to interdict targets in subspace drive is mandatory, however, how much you need to optimize it is highly debatable. To add to the dilemma, the community has still yet to figure out how these things are optimized. I have yet to find an FSDI that doesn't damage my ship when I use it, and there's no hard numbers on what the benefits are in using a larger upgrade.
      -- Limpet Controller: Less work involved in cracking the egg open, but more time consuming and costly.
      --Cargo: Meghan Trainer could write a song about this, as it's all about that cargo.
      --Shield cell banks: These would be so nice to have, however, considering all the other mods we have to sacrifice cargo space for, they're completely out of the question.
      So lets take a look at how these stack up to ship compartments. The Cobra has 6 internals, 3 size 4 and 3 size 2. If you take the best you can fit of shields, FDSI and LC, that leaves you with 12 cargo slots in the 3 size 2s, hardly worth the risk for a ship that costs you in the tens of millions of creds. Downgrade the FSDI and that will give you 24 tons, better, but still not very preferable. Downgrade both the FSDI and the limpet controller will give you 36 tons, much more respectable, but still rather lacking imo. Still, it is actually a small ship, so maybe I'm expecting too much. The only other decent ship for pirating imo is the ASP and it looses an awful lot in speed for it's gains. If a bounty hunter comes for you in an Eagle,Viper or Cobra while you're in this thing, you're going to be in for the fight of your life.

    Great video as always -- Thank You
    The use of this module is something I have never done. Never saw the reason to use it. Going around and grief people I can understand. I would much rather blow their ship up. I would never take the time to scoop and deliver cargo. Can’t see the pirate way of life as an alternative to making credits in this game.
    I enjoy being the wolf and have been known to play the rabbit on occasion. Playing the rabbit and then showing them a wolf is most enjoyable. Days are long gone now that they see my rating. I have though of flying a Type 6 Transporter, but we both know that it’s only a big PIÑATA.
    Never have been able to get my ships cold enough to smuggle. Bringing in an illicit banned load of goods into a station is something I would like to see how it is done.

    I was under attack by npcs, pretty sure, and got a message "Warning, foreign body attached" Was that perhaps a hatch breaker limpet? Soon after I jumped to supercruise, though I never got a message about it detaching? Do they automatically detach after a battle or when you're out of range or when you jump to supercruise? I don't want to self destruct a 56 million credit ship because some little parasite is stuck on it.........

      if i see black box or military stuff or data floating around i'll grab it, few other value metals too but right now trying to get rich scanning systems, just scanned 2 star and 4 planet system and placed my name on it. if you search you find me way down by Maia system should be blue dot on the map. ran into python chasing me down for interdiction and with all my scan i have i wasn't going to chance running from a dangerous ranking npc. i just put engines to 0 and safe dropped out of space to change instance.
      if you see me around you'll see my name as Crzy Cdn
      enjoy your day.

    Question:
    What if you turn off the cargo hatch module? How does it effect the time to break the hatch?
    That just made me think. If you have no cargo space / rack do you still have a cargo hatch? Must check my Viper.
