I think there's a whole UA-cam movement that I call Cold Nerds and Teslas. Cold nerd's kids make this vid stand out. Mostly guys who probably never camp outdoors, would never camp outside in the winter - but Tesla? Yeah, let's try that! (for the record I love camping outside in the snow....but haven't done it in a couple of years. Car camping, bunk in the back? I've done a lot more of that in the past couple of years. My Model Y makes it almost too easy.) I started doing this in my Prius V. The seats don't fold flat so I made a plywood bunk 1/4" plywood with some 1" rails glued to the bottom (so it doesn't bend). I just moved this over to my Tesla Model Y. Even though the backs of Teslas are flat, the rise of a few inches increases my storage underneath. Also, I used to use my backpacking inflatable mattress, but when I stepped up to a Tesla it hit me that I should get step up to memory foam, so I found this www.amazon.com/gp/product/B077BQJJRN/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1 4" x 25 x 75" (folds up into 25 x25) That and a sleeping bag, or fleece sleeping bag liner (wear a warm top) and it's cozy. Maybe even better than sleeping at home. I like parking when it's going to snow. If you say the word snow anywhere around a Prius it gets stuck. I did it anyway. Something about it snowing all night... The Model Y LR dual motors is great in the snow. So 10% battery usage in -5C. Good to know. Thanks.
Don’t worry too much about correcting yourself with 120VAC (Volts/Alternating Current). A lot of RV plugs are wire ran really far so the voltage drop along they’re probably just barley above 110VAC anyways. I’m assuming you don’t carry a voltmeter everywhere you go, so it’s safer operating under the assumption you’re already dealing with voltage drop already. There are different calculations for gauge of wire over distance, and you don’t want any portion of that wire drawing too much current to be underrated. Just Google wire size calculator and you’ll see what length of cable is safe to use. Knowing your extension cable is very important. Gauges will range between 16 and 10 for 120VAC. There is a resistor on all the Tesla adapters telling it what kind of NEMA plug is connected. So a standard 5-15 plug, your call will know the maximum amperage it can draw is 12Amps. If you have a 30meter cable, it’s rated 12/3 (12 gauge, 3 conductor), you would be drawing too much power for the rating of that cable. It would be very dangerous as the cable can overheat before the circuit breaker can trip. But you can drop it down to 8Amp in the vehicle and it would be safe. Even if the car is still rated at 0/mph charge it would be better to leave the car plugged in and letting the max draw to like 8amps if you’re concerned about the cable not being strong enough. In cold weather conditions like that, your batteries would be much happier to have any help they can get to stay warm.
As always, excellent images and narrative. Love you kids!! Keep up the great work. I live in Minnesota but have not taken my model Y camping yet. Be well!!!!
I was really hoping to see how a family of four arranged themselves in a Model Y for an overnight camping adventure. Enjoyed the video, but would really like to see some discussion on the camping experience.
My wife and I are pretty tall. The kids and Mom slept in the back easily and comfortably all the times we tesla camped. I like to sleep in the front seat... cause I'm always the later one hoping in... and like to stay on guard.
Great Stuff! I have 2 toddlers and soon to be 3. We love camping but haven't gotten to camp in snow ...yet! Such a great option with the Y not having to worry about fumes!
I see you went from California to Toronto with your new tesla, what did you have to do, to get through Canadian customs, what duties and fees were needed.
I tried camp mode in my Model 3 for the first time in 3 years. We were so impressed ! We set camp mode on 70 degrees and our early Model 3 consumed 70 miles a lot more than the new octovalve but what a pleasure. We honestly didn’t need blankets and in the morning there was not a drop of condensation on the windows. We are sold ! I also have a old VW Camper, you wake up in the morning cold and stiff, the interior is sopping wet. I don’t think even motor homes have this feature.
I’m going to lease Model Y a year as Model X is no where to be seen atm. I am going to camp in cold weather with my gf a lot, and was looking for this info. Thank you very much - 1% per hour seems great and easy to calculate with.
If anyone’s wondering - there are no issues w extension cords at all. Done it dozens of times with no issues. That print on the charger plug 🔌 is definitely just a precaution.
Great video. Algonquin Park looks great in the winter wonderland. Glad to see there are Superchargers in Huntsville. We have been up to Deerhurst in the summer. We will have to check out Algonquin Park. I bet it is super busy in the summer time. thanks for sharing the video.
Not to credit ICE cars, but you can easily idle it for longer than 11 hours even in gas guzzlers. I had to do it when my car wouldn’t turn off (like actually not turn off after taking my key out) and the dealership/shops were closed by then. Idk if newer cars have similar features to camp mode but that’s a good point towards one of the Tesla models hahaha. I wouldn’t idle an ICE car if it was snowing tho in case the tailpipe gets blocked. EVs def take the worry out of all of this while adding a fun adventure like this video showed 😄
ICE idling isn't too bad, I lose 20miles for 6hrs idling last time I went camping and it turns out too cold so we have to sleep in the car but the noiseless EV car idling will beat it all.
Awesome vid! Been thinking of doing this for a while now...this vid may make me take the plunge. How was the washroom situation there? I'm assuming there were none? Keep up the great work.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing your Tesla car camping experience. Beautiful video again of the truly winter wonderland. Growing up in Ohio I had been to Algonquin Park on a canoe trip.
Great video. Now you have given me an idea for camping in the winter. Although you are brave to go up without charging - I guess you can do that you have a model y. The heat pump appears to save you so much energy. Amazing. As for charging. That RV adapter you bought won’t work unless you re-wire it for ev charging. I bought one specifically for the Tesla. When I drove up to Kenora, Ontario, we stopped at a couple of camps and used the 30 amp plug. Also remember to turn down you amps to 24 so you don’t fault out - I think 20 percent less of actually capability. Don’t go to camp without charging your car. I thought it would be good to test out the 30 amp only to realize that I didn’t account for air conditioning sucking up a lot of power.
@@LeonChai I got this one: www.evseadapters.com/products/tt-30-adapter-for-tesla-model-s-x-3-gen-2/ . You'll have to buy an extension cord as well that can handle 30 amp. I guess you could rewire the adapter (check UA-cam), but it seems difficult. Perhaps you and I should do another winter camping video and compare the power drainage from a Model Y vs. Model 3! BTW which Algonquin park campsite did you go to? My wife and I would like to go in March.
Excellent video. I'm assuming you went from GTA to Algonquin. Can you please share how many times you stopped for Supercharger and for how long and at what places? I am planning to visit soon for the first time in Model Y and I am having range anxiety, lol. The campsite is nice, which spot was that? Appreciate your help.

Omg. You guys are blessed with everything. Beautiful nature, wonderful kids, coolest parents, and model Y... ^ ^ So, mom and kids slept in cargo area, did you sleep in front seat?
The charging part seems very important to me. Did it work or not? Couldn't you park closer to the plug so you wouldn't need the extension cord? Which outlet did you use. Is it only 120 volts or did they have 220 on the larger plugs?
In my experience the standard 15 amp connector, which charges at 12 amps, is pretty much useless in winter. I seems to keep the battery at a steady state without charging or discharging. In the summertime, it will charge the car very slowly. The other outlet we saw in the video is a 30 amp outlet. That would charge the car well, but Tesla doesn't seem to sell this exact type of 30 amp plug, from Tesla, to plug into your charging adapter. You would have to buy another 30 amp adapter to go from the 30 amp Tesla plug to this particular 30 amp socket (maybe only in Canada).
@@PhilT993 Thanks. I did some rv camping in the past and used the larger outlet in the US. The plug from the rv would fit the larger one. I agree 12 amps is hardly worth it but better than nothing. If you needed it longer term it would charge a bit overnight if not using the heater etc.

I was actually really surprised by the results too. I always thought the heat pump would only work well while the car is generating heat.. like a traditional water pump and heatercore... I gotta brush up on this tech...lol

Use a 12 awg extension cord. The max extension cord I would use is 25ft at 16 amps. If you have a 50ft extension cord drop the amps to 9 amps and 100ft cord manually set the amps to 4amps!
This is great! Haven't come across any Canadian tesla content dealing with winter, thanks! Did you set the climate control on recirculate, or not? Also, do you have a 14-50 adapter for your umc? This would allow you to charge on the RV 240v outlet with your camco adapter and with the proper rated extension cord. Then you would have been able to charge and keep the temp at 25C.
Thank you! First winter with our Tesla ...so far so good! Good question on the recirculation.... when in Camp mode.. it kinda just overrides everything. I have the 14-50 adapter but the reach was my issue and wasn't sure if they made a longer cord (from the mobile adapter )...I could have purchased?
@@LeonChai With extension cords your biggest worry is voltage drop, amp drop and HEAT! It's not best practice, but you need to make the best of a situation. So, to play it safe getting a max 20ft cord with an appropriate wire gauge of 6awg(max 50amps) or 8awg(max 40amps). The lower the number the larger the wire gauge; like aperature size for lenses. 6awg is the best choice, a little overkill, but better to be safe than sorry. This is better reserved for special circumstances just like in your scenario. So, definitely do not use on a regular basis. Otherwise, being able to plug into a 240v outlet gives you the edge of being able to charge consistently and be able to keep HVAC running to stay warmer. Worst case voltage drops in half, but at the least you're able to draw enough to keep running the HVAC and trickle charger. Anyways, I'm no expert by any means. I'm still learning as I go, as a relatively new tesla owner. Lastly, looking forward to more of your upcoming content! All the best!
@@macc9047 The heat was my biggest fear... I didn't want to worry about it overnight. This is great info, thanks so much for taking the time to write this!
@@LeonChai I know this is an extremely late comment but I used a cable that could do max 1100 W and I charged on it using the regular 110 plug-in on the connector when I went camping and my m3 automatically lowered the amps in half to six and I was still was able to use the heat without any battery drop. When I go on trips like that to camping places where they have outlets like that I have a 50 foot cord that can pull All of the nema adapters from 110 all the way up to a 50 plug and pull max power through. The cord cord has adapters that you can takeoff on the ends to switch it out so I end up just keeping my mobile connector plugged into the extension cord with the max Nema plug and then roll it all up and put it below the rear trunk of my model three and then switch out the adapter on the extension cord that plugs into the outlet as needed unless I’m parking close enough. After Then you can just enjoy charging as if you’re at home Anyway the cable is quite thin it’s about as thick as the connector cable that goes to the car - minus the nice exterior vinyl layer and just The typical heavy duty extension cord rubber but in yellow. I was actually really surprised by the results too. I always thought the heat pump would only work well while the car is generating heat.. like a traditional water pump and heatercore... I gotta brush up on this tech...lol
Dude amazing camera work. This was amazing visually speaking
thx for the video. I've ordered a model 3 perf and thinking about changing it to model y perf. Do you think with model 3 perf I can go camping easily like you did?
Hey - Where did you get the center caps and lug nut covers for your wheels? I ordered the same R241 set for my winter wheels and need to dress them up. Thanks!
My tire shop included the caps and the actual lugs (i was surprised too that it wasn't the covers)
A sub from me! You have the exact colour combo that is on my wish list! Blue with white interior and black rims to seal the deal! Nice video bro!
May I ask you where you get your music from for you videos? Thanks
Thank you for the Sub! I used a combo for music.. YT library, motion array and sound stripe
Was there much noise or vibration from the heat pump running at night?
From the inside its pretty quiet... but from the exterior its much louder.
Thanks for sharing the video.
Did you get a good LTE signal at the Algonquin ?
Thanks for watching! Yup... LTE signal was very good at Algonquin
Great camping! How did four of you managed to sleep in Y altogether?!
My kids and wife slept in the back all comfy and I slept in the front seat ... like on a flight 😂
@@LeonChai 🤣
Wow, I do need this one!
Can you sleep 2 adults and 2 kids inside? How? We are thinking of getting a model Y, but we have a 8 years old. I am not sure if there is enough space for 3 of us. Thank you for the video.
My wife and kids sleep comfortably in the back (my wife is taller too). Every time we camp in our car... I always slept in the front seat.. just to stay on guard or because I get in later and dont want to wake the fam in the back. I def think 3 is doable
@@LeonChai That’s great, but how do you sleep in the front? Do you use any customized air mattress for the front seat? Thank you for answering my question. By the way, you have a lovely family🥰🥰🥰
Can you set the trunk opening height? I have a low garage ceiling and worry about auto open will hit it.
Great video!
Thanks so much 🙏. I always knew you could adjust the hatch height.. I just didn't know how to set it until someone wrote in the comments how 😂
Are you using stock or winter tires? Sorry if I missed it in the video or your channel.
I'm running 19" Fast R241 grey colour with Continental Viking Contact 7
Never seen that snowflake icon ❄️ before 🤪...that was some serious snowy road conditions...O’Canada! 🇨🇦
I know you miss it ..😂. My buddy in Cali got the snowflake icon on his Model 3...wasn't that cold!
For now I'm going to vacation though your family's adventures. Not sure if my wife could handle being out there like that. She's born and raised in Philippines so cold isn't her thing. But I'll convince her somehow. LOL. Thanks for sharing.
😂 I have family from Trinidad that often visit and they can't take the Fall weather here.... I get it..lol
Did you ever have to deal with -50 below with the Tesla Y
For snow did you keep the stock tires or all season/ winter tires?
Swapped out rims with snow tires (went to 19" )
Did you guys sleep comfortable with 2 adults and 2 kids. That's impressive! I'll be trying with just 2 adults haha
I was wondering the same thing. 2 adults and 2 kids
Could you do a shot of your whole family inside the Y ? Hahhaa I'd do it but I dunno where to find 2 kids 🤣
My wife and kids slept all comfy in the back. I always end up sleeping in the front... just because I like to be on guard... and i'm always the last one in
@@LeonChai that cant be too comfortable sleeping in the front then :O
@@TeslaHo my wife would say I have the comfiest spot upfront...my kids move around all night when they sleep 😂
Is running an extension cord like that safe?
I was thinking the same. Would want to know if that is recommended or not. In the video I believe he opted out of charging it overnight
Use a 12 awg extension cord. The max extension cord I would use is 25ft at 16 amps. If you have a 50ft extension cord drop the amps to 9 amps and 100ft cord manually set the amps to 4amps!
Gotta love the highland trail!
That trail is so beautiful!
Amazing video! Thanks for sharing great stuff!
When driving did you have winter tires on or the all seasons that came with it? Thank you
ideally you dont want to use an extension cord to charge but if you do use one, the longer the cord the slower the charge.... keep that in mind!
Good to know! The cord I brought was super long...
Sorry for typing so much I just thought you should know because of the amazing trips you and your family go on. 🤙
Amazing! What cable is this?
Nice video! Thank you! What kind of extension cord did you buy it?
Thank you! I just bought a heavy duty outdoor extension cord from home depot
You can adjust how high the hatch can go
Great video! Which mattress did you guys use for sleeping?
What are the rims and tires you got? Link please
They look to be the Tsportline TST Flow Forged 19"
They are 19" Fast R241 grey colour with Continental Viking Contact 7. If you live in Toronto, I had such an amazing experience with Tires23 in Markham.
@@LeonChai So they are Replika R241?! They look so similar! I’m planning to get the same ones. How do you like them? Haven’t seen many reviews on them.
@@BogdanStetco I like them a lot! I have the optional 20" for the summer and these are 19... I much prefer the ride quality on the 19"... and these reps are solid (didn't expect them to come with the tesla center cap too)
Dude this is a cool video. I like the style.
Thanks man - I appreciate it !
Great video! How come the car was plugged in and steal lost power overnight?
Great video! Is your model Y.. LR?
Thanks so much for watching! Yup...that's the LR model
The most important thing ......how quickly does it take for cabin to heat up. ....and you left that out..... why? Why?
god damn i cant decide about the blude model Y if its the best colour or not. I like blue and midnight silver.
The midnight silver is so good... i kinda also like the red too... 😂
What winter tires are you running. I live in Simcoe Country. I just looked at a 2020 Model Y Performance
What size tires and which type of rims are those?
Which rims are those? Love them
Low voltage is that why car consumed 11% battery while plugged in?
The awd system is better than a Subaru?! Interesting 🤔
Curious to know how you went sleeping all four of you in the back. Was it a comfortable sleep? How does is compare to sharing a queen or king bed? Would you sleep 4 together again? Would an SUV test be better?
Mom and the kids slept in the back.. and I slept in the front seat. Pretty comfy according to mom .. as comfy as it can be with 2 kids :)
Nice video, thanks for sharing your experience. Question, what tires do you use in the snow.. thanks
Thanks so much for watching! I got Continental winter tires... forgot the exact model.. but loving the step down in rim size.. 19" comfortable.
What wheels do you have on there. Specs?
They are 19" Fast R241 grey colour with Continental Viking Contact 7
hey Leon, where did you get those rims? also if you can provide a link or name of them. I know they're Tesla rims. just dont know the specs or name of them.
I forgot the name of them... but if you are in the toronto area... I got them at tires23 in Markham
I was thinking. 20 degrees is still cold, but then I remembered. Canadian. Celsius
factor in the wind... and that's another -10 drop..haa
Did you camp 2 kids and 2 adults in the Model Y?
Your tesla looks very good 🔥
Thank you!
If a Tesla can handle the Canadian Rockies - this gives me confidence that a Tesla can handle the Colorado Rockies. TBF your roads looked a lot better than what Denver would be haha.
Do you have winter tires on?
Excellent video. btw what rims and size does your MY have?
Thank you 🙏 . For these winters, On 19" reps 255/45-19
dumb question but I’m assuming this is with winter tires?
not a dumb question... but yea.. on winter tires and I swapped out the rims
How many kilometers does your Tesla model Y have?
Great video! Can you please provide more information on those wheels?! A lot of us in the comments are dying to know.
Thanks so much 🙏 The wheels are 19" Fast R241... in grey colour.
Hi there. Thx for the vid :)
Can i ask is the model y back seats more flat when putting Them down?
Also is there more width than in a model 3?
Thanks for watching! Check this part in my vid... shows the angle of the seat.... ua-cam.com/video/__qk0aF88fU/v-deo.html
Fantastic. I love it😀
Great video
