    i struggle to notice if there's a difference between ''prior-ty'' and "pri-ori-ty''. is there any noticeable difference at all ms. dunbar?

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  4 роки тому

      "Prior" has the stress on "pri," but "priority" has the stress on "or," so that would be the main thing to watch out for. If you leave out the /ɪ/ syllable it may sound a little rushed, but because the last 2 syllables are very quick and unstressed, it may not matter too much as long as you have enough length on the "or" stressed syllable.

    I heard some native speakers pronounced like this: priOR'dy. Is it right?

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, because the /or/ syllable is stressed and the /ɪ/ syllable is short and unstressed, it almost drops out. If I say it without the /ɪ/ it still sounds natural and correct to me. Thanks for pointing it out!

    • @SpeechModification

      Yes, I can add "mail" and "post office" to the Word of the Day series. For "Jamal," it sounds like people don't hear your L sound at the end very well. Maybe this video can help you with pronouncing the "all" syllable of your name in a way Americans will understand it better: ua-cam.com/video/f5NiU2QwDoQ/v-deo.html

      Yes, these can be challenging. Here are some places to start: final Z sounds: ua-cam.com/video/Lcy4rUuShf8/v-deo.html. G: ua-cam.com/video/QH8OiSF8CKk/v-deo.html. Final voiced consonants: ua-cam.com/video/ujZmG3FBrXc/v-deo.html and ua-cam.com/video/RUIrT0XXFmk/v-deo.html

    Such a tongue twister, it's one of very few words that are hard to pronounce for me in (American) English. All the sounds are easy by themselves, but combined I find it hard to adjust the tongue fast enough during the second half of the word. I'll have to practice more, for sure.

    • @SpeechModification
      @SpeechModification  2 роки тому +2

      Yes, it's tough. One suggestion is to practice building it from the end, that is, say dee, ih-dee, or-ih-de, pry-oridee. That might help the end of the word flow better for you.

You can also work on other words with "ity" to help you with this word. Here are some videos that might help: ua-cam.com/video/Jj8MfKfvhLw/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/W8FJTJPV-8c/v-deo.html
