    Hi. That's not what I'm doing right now. I've done this before. For me this sort of "organized" development didn't work. After a year spent on a project where I didn't see "the light at the end of the tunnel" I decided to throw everything away: no planning, no "trello" board, no complex solutions and so on. I work as a developer for a large company in a team (I'm used to working using agile methodologies) and I only have free time to develop games on my own, as solo developer. I'm not so young, so I can't wait many months or years to see the conclusion of my projects and... see them fail because maybe I completed them but as a game they're a failure! So, I radically changed my approach: a whole new project, no planning, just small work sessions (one evening...) in which I try to realize a simple idea, then I see the result and decide to save it or trash it. Every time at the end of the development session the game must be in perfect condition: I have to clean it, debug it and possibly perform the required refactoring. After more than a month, I can say that this solution works for me. I repeat: for me. I spent some time developing and more time testing, experimenting and thinking about possible evolutions. I didn't write any ideas down on paper. If an idea is a good idea, I will remember it. If I forgot the idea, it's probably not that good. And the solutions I used each time were simple and creative. Now I'm ready to publish the first prototype of my "game" and see if it likes it. I call it "prototype", but it's polished enough, debugged enough, complete enough to play. It's not the definitive game because I want it to be more than what it is now. I repeat: for me, in my situation, the structured approach did not work. The extreme approach I'm using now works: I've gone much further than where I had arrived with the previous project after a year, I have much more time to think and imagine and my creativity has improved. I repeat: it is my experience. It doesn't mean that it works the same way with others.

      I kinda do the same thing but that’s cause I don’t like working on long projects and prefer making shorter games

    does it matter if i prefer a engine with event based scripting? Such as smile game builder, rpg maker mz, and rpg developer bakin, while most of the stuff comes pre-made you can completely customize everything.

    HELLO! I have been out of town for a bit so I am catching up. I have in the past found myself in the tutorial grind. What worked to get me out of it was what I called toy building. I would build a simple ui button that played a sound as an example. Then I used that skill set to create a tool that created a random set of magic items for a table top game. Then.... Hope that helps anyone struggling.

      @dev-worm  3 місяці тому +3

      Yes! Nothing compares to the grind of learning basic concepts and experiment until you have a satisfactory grasp of the matter

    • @portalpony477
      @portalpony477 3 місяці тому

      To be honest, I think this is nonsense. I don't care about learning. If it works I can use it. And if I just always know how to copy and paste, I will never always know how it works. Yeah, I didn't learn anything that will help me in the future, but a lot of times it's just about getting s*** done.

    Good point not to listen to you is by just looking at the games you’ve done, especially after 5 years. Lmao, go and tell everyone how long you’re developing games now and continue feeding your self-importance

    • @dev-worm

      those are clips from basic tutorial videos I created.. not actual games. I am not very good at art or asset creation and am currently working on improving in that area. I do believe I understand the back end a bit and am trying to give my view on how to go about certain tasks and that is what I am trying to teach.

    I've started making a game several months ago and most tutorials suck at teaching how to develop a game. They can teach you few concepts like animations, level design or physics execution. And that's great, when you know how what you are trying to implement.
    But the key is knowing how to make a system, and that's what most tutorials are missing. How to structure game data and create overarching game loop. When I started, I knew what type of game I would like to play and tried creating it. I watched some tutorials, put them together and got a very basic solution. But it wasn't expandable. Few scenes/classes work in a basic tutorial, but not in a complex game. When I tried adding complexity to my tutorial solution, I got overwhelmed.
    Instead of following tutorial approach and designing movement, then level, then scoring etc, I have designed project with empty functions/classes and defined all internal data and interfaces between them. This way, I can increase complexity of individual functions and changing one function has no effect on the rest of the code. In fact, with this modular solution it's easy to expand my project almost infinitely as I come up with ideas for new items, resources or levels.
