    You see, this is what I like about Doug. Since he's a comedian, it would have been so easy to say "Fuck anyone who's offended" and leave it at that, but instead he actually looks fairly at both sides and calls out the extremes of both. I really like how he always looks at both sides and doesn't disregard anyone.

      Yeah this is a good issue to talk about. In my own summary of this video, make a joke out of good intentions and reasons while also be smart about it and have common sense. If people are offended then expect that but know why they feel offended and question yourself if you whether or not meant to hurt anyone. And don't get suck into the hatred and rage of people who are offended because once you do, you lose any good reasons of your jokes. Always challenge and question things in your comedy rather then to shock people and do it in a way to represent the joke well not to be politically correct or to be so offensive, but to get the message or joke through.

      I also agree Heck even though I don't like movies like Friday or movies in where a black sheep robs just because, they don't say it because all blacks act like that they say it because of how people react to one another
      When Wes Craven made Last House on the Left and The Hills Have Eyes people weren't only shocked but offended cut to years later He makes New Nightmare and Scream which both address too much and too little of both good and bad it is to be scared

      +Junglehero127 I agree 100%. I lot of people give him a hard time for taking the middle ground, or not taking a hard stance, but so many people wouldn't even acknowledge the validity of this question, or claim "free speech" as a way to silence critics (criticism is also free speech, folks!). Plus, often the middle ground is the most reasonable option. I usually find myself agreeing with him, for the most part if not entirely.

    We actually fucking adore speedy gonzales in Mexico. He is a stereotype, yes, thing is, just like Jerry, he is smart, charming, energetic, and always outwits his chaser. For an american cartoon to make a foreigner character the good one, we took it as a compliment and were actually flattered.

    Reason why Kevin Hart is loved by most and doesn’t have that many haters.
    I remember watching a Spongebob episode where Spongebob becomes a famous comedian by cracking jokes at his Squirrel friend but later when he decides not to joke about her as she gets offended , he starts losing his audiences . The episodes ends by Spongebob making jokes about himself which started to regain his lost audience.
    Example: Laugh at my pain

      Kinda, but you missed the point of the end. He doesn't just make jokes about himself, he stops just making squirrel jokes and starts joking about everyone. Basically the argument (that I support) of you can't be racist if you are racist to every race equally. Whites? They shoot first, ask questions never! Blacks? Watch your purse, shoes, and wallet! Asians? Take your problem kids to one of them for 5 minutes and they'll behave for life. All inherently race based jokes, but since you don't just stick to one race it comes off way better, and even gives you more material

    I don't really find the old Speedy Gonzales that offensive either. Mostly because the "offensive" jokes never felt like they were meant to be making fun of Mexicans. The impression that they left me was they were really making fun of Americans. It was as if the creators of the shorts were acknowledging how ignorant they themselves were about Mexican culture. And considering these shorts were made because of the Good Neighbor policy, one can assume they were intended with good humor towards the Mexicans, not against them. Just look at the title character! He's a Mexican that fast, clever, brave, and efficient. Why wouldn't Mexicans want to be portray like that?!

      As a mexican, it never cross my mind that it was ofensive in any way, it was an inofensive really fun cartoon, and i really like how he was portrayed in the new looney toones cartoon...It is not mean to be taken seriously, the only kind of rasis stuff were the crows, but they are porrayed as mexicans from the revolutionary ages wich hapens several CENTURIES ago were male mexicans were kind of like that, lassy and drunkl since there was nothing more to do rather than work or fight in the war but it was a kind of outdated joke but is not like bugs wasnt figthing in the medieval ages... or daffy as a futuristic usseles hero.

Considering that stealing food was the sort of thing that most cartoon mice did back in the day. And the the fact that Speedy was usually put up against Sylvester and Daffy, who were known to be selfish and aggressive, and there for, had it coming to them.

    Over-sensitivity is certainly a thing, but in my experience, when someone on the internet says "people are too sensitive" what he means is "I can't believe people are calling me a racist just because I said something unforgivably racist. What gives?" I'm really kind of sick of the word "sensitive". The conversation would be a lot more interesting if we just let people feel however they damn well want to feel about things. If someone feels offended, maybe instead of being a dick about it we could just hear them out. They might have a point if we're willing to think about it from their point of view. And if we disagree, well then we can have a productive discussion about it instead of just calling each other names like goddamn children. When the conversation begins and ends with "you're just being too sensitive", no one gains anything from it.

    • @karelfinn2343
      @karelfinn2343 9 років тому +16

      ***** The fact that it's not black and white is precisely my point. Everyone has different experiences and will find different things offensive. The fact that someone else might disagree does not make their feelings invalid. I'm sick of seeing people demonized for being offended by things they find offensive.
      You say "offense isn't given, only taken". Well, I don't have a pithy idiom to retort with, but that's bullshit. Offense is given whenever you make statements about someone without thinking about it from their point of view and considering how it affects them. When you stereotype a group of people, when you belittle their struggles, when you make baseless accusations, or express ridicule towards them - when you do these things, even for the sake of a joke, that is giving offense, And even when this is done unintentionally, it doesn't give the comedian some sort of moral high ground; people still have the right to react negatively to poorly chosen words.
      In short, if people are being offended by your jokes, you probably need to work on your delivery or get better material. It's not the audience's fault you're not funny.

    • @angrytheclown801
      @angrytheclown801 9 років тому +6

      +Kurt Reinkemeyer Except the remark about racism didn't relate whatsoever to any of those points, people truly can be oversensitive, and sometimes you need to be offensive to get a point across.
      You can't go all your life not making an offensive statement. You gotta take a stand sometime on something and when you take a stand, someone will always find it offensive without fail. But, what's the alternative? Not taking a stand because you're afraid of offending someone? That gives you no base to rely on when things get really bad.
      Yes, no one, not even comedians have a moral high ground when it comes to offense. But at the same time, it isn't a golden ticket for people to be just automagically offended at any little thing. We're supposed to be challenged, we're supposed to stand there and have our expectations turned on their heads. Getting offended or offending is a sign you're just another human being. How you react to it, that's what determines what quality person you are. If you're sitting around, pointing the finger shouting "THAT'S OFFENSIVE!" Then guess what, you deserve to be offended and I hope desperately you have a mental breakdown from it. But if you listen, admit to yourself that could be offensive to someone and decide maybe there's just more important things to concern yourself with and move on, well that's mature and thoughtful and how it should be. Unless someone is telling the joke and punching you in the face or advocating for your destruction. Then it's totally all right to get up in arms about it.

    • @wordforger
      @wordforger 9 років тому +11

      +Kurt Reinkemeyer The problem comes when the offended party immediately seeks to remove the speech of the offender without hearing them out, and vice versa. I can tell you that some people that claim offense can often be just as offensive or even MORE offensive in their "defense of the little guy" than the original offender. Many that speak insensitively do so from pure ignorance, but the immediate snap to vitriol and pitchforks rather than open dialogue makes the offender more likely to go on the defensive and refuse to listen to the offended instead of reassessing their own values. It's the difference between ducking in a bunker at lobbed grenades and accepting a gentle guiding hand.

    • @angrytheclown801
      @angrytheclown801 9 років тому +2

      *****
      Yes, I've had people go out of their way to try and hurt me psychologically. One of them was my ex fiance. She....ooh ooh ooooh, I could advocate for her destruction any day, you can have her.
      Have you ever heard an Aristocrats joke? An interesting mental exercise actually. It's all about this family trying to make it into show business. The joke is told differently from person to person and goes out of the way to offend and go over the top in tastelessness and sheer debauchery. It's supposed to offend in the highest level without actually being funny.
      Yes, there are mental limits in patience and tolerance people can have. Does this mean we should not keep challenging other people even if it offends them? No. A world where everyone refuses to offend each other is a world where we are mindless sheep. Not just of the condescending teenager definition, but truly not using the great minds that have defined us for so long.
      If we were afraid of how others thought about something, we wouldn't have this computer we're each at because new ideas are offensive. We wouldn't interact with each other because in some cultures, shaking hands with the left hand is offensive.
      There are so many things we all do or take for granted that offend others. This does not mean we stop living. Offense is part of life.

    • @Finkster5
      @Finkster5 9 років тому +2

      +David Roberson TL; DR: None, because if you don't have the patience and/or respect to read through this or if you feel your time/life would be better spent elsewhere, go ahead. Pursue your hopes and dreams. Go start that novel you're always talking about.
      I think your points are all really well made, but don't take certain things into account. Challenging new ideas and offense aren't mutually exclusive. Something can be offensive and intellectually stimulating at the same time, it can be intellectually stimulating and not offensive, OR it can be purely offensive with no educational value. And I'm pretty sure there's a scale involved with that too. Also, I think there's different kinds of offense. Like, being offended that the lightsabers in the new Star Wars movie are different doesn't really affect that person that much...unless they have serious issues. It's not like as if, say, someone was saying your childhood hero was a piece of shit soon after they died. In the same way, I think there's a difference between someone who says 'that's inappropriate therefore we shouldn't laugh at it', and say, a sexual assault survivor who has just heard a joke made about such things in a public setting where they didn't expect it.
      That won't challenge most people. Maybe a select few have superhuman psyches and if the joke is insightful will take something positive away from the experience. Otherwise though, being reminded of something like that is at least extremely unpleasant and at worst traumatic. I didn't know this before, and I know the term seems silly to a lot of people who don't know a whole lot about it, but being 'triggered' doesn't just mean getting a little pissy at your keyboard. If it helps, think of it in terms of the old guy from Drake and Josh archetype. You know, the one who went around the house, tying people up and acting like he was back in Vietnam? And yeah, that's an exaggerated portrayal, but that's based on actual cases of PTSD, which people didn't even believe was a real thing until well after World War I. So yeah, old, tough, war horses like that get 'triggered' by things, just like how people online do. Just think about those guys and how they differ from what our idea of a 'triggered person' is like. PTSD just stands for post traumatic stress disorder, which is probably a better name for people's experiences than 'triggered' anyway.
      At risk of being condescending (and I'm sorry if I am), I just would like to explain the term in an easily understandable way. 'post traumatic'- After the trauma. So, after really, really, _really_ bad shit has gone down, you get 'stressed' about that shit, and it's a disorder, which means the 'stress' doesn't go away. And according to people I've talked to, 'having an episode' or 'getting triggered' usually means anything from severe headaches, throwing up, dizziness, inability to sleep accompanied by nightmares, etc, etc, etc. Which, again, does that sound like a person being overly sensitive? But it's understandable. How would a normal, mentally healthy person who has never experienced anything traumatic understand, unless they took the time to learn about it (Note: I have met people who've been through trauma who are not affected in the same ways and who are perfectly fine making jokes about it. But then I think it should be up to the individual what they're okay with.)?
      Honestly though, what's my solution? It sounds ridiculous, but what if there were comedy places specifically for offensive comedy and ones for less-offensive comedy (because as Doug said and I'll admit all comedy is offensive in some way)? That way, no matter what you think of the other side you have your own thing, everybody's happy and we can finally stop having this dumb argument.
      :v

    Comedy is what makes the world beautiful, what makes it colorful. It's not art, it's not science, it's not politics. When you're talking to someone you've just met and trying to be friends with would you rather have a silly joke in your mind or a strong political argument that may opposite his? When you get home stressed out by work, would you rather read a book on Quantum Physics or watch Friends? Everything is important at its on place, there's no right time. If comedy one day dies, we would fall into idiocracy and I, personally, wouldn't want to live in a world like that

    I think what a lot of people don't realise is comedy is often based on either misery or absurdity *without* consequences (in context at least.) Think about it, would you laugh at Tom and Jerry if the pain Tom went through in every episode actually affected him? Looking at the most famous Monty Python sketch, The Black Knight, you realise that the joke actually based on the absurdity of the knights response to being dismembered. Yes there is misery in that the knight is permanently losing his limbs but through the sheer madness and lack of genuine consequences, it ends up being hilarious for many of us. Of course, comedy is subjective anyway and no matter what you say someone will be offended. Frankie Boyle may cross any line 20 times over, but he managed to find an audience and so there is really no reason to censor his routine. On the other hand, someone out there is taking offence to Peter Kay's relatable British style. The trick is to handle offence maturely and not try to take away things that other people enjoy.

    I think a joke goes too far when it makes its intended audience legitimately uncomfortable. 9/11 jokes are funny to some, but tell them to a 9/11 survivor and it's no longer a joke. There's no such thing as "Everything's ok to joke about," which many pseudo intellectuals cop out to because they lack the brain processing power to actually think about it for a second. I don't know one GOOD comedian who would use offensive humor just for the sake of being offensive. I personally find offensive jokes funny when they're used in good taste, but not everyone finds them funny and if they're your intended audience, then you have a problem. And personally, offensive humor for the sake of being offensive, like Bob Saget getting on stage cussing because "HAHA It's the dad from Full House saying cunt!" is just bad humor. When you revert to shocking your audience for a laugh, then you're a bad comedian. I like Jim Jefferies myself. Some of his stuff is pretty raunchy but it's not the theme of his act. Like when he talks about his kid seeing his dick in the shower. It's funny because he's talking about how kids can sometimes catch us off guard. Now if he just did what Bob Saget does and said something like, "My fucking kid saw my cock and now he's probably going to get hard you cock sucking mother fucker." I mean, where's the humor in that? Offensive humor must be directed at the appropriate audience and be part of an overall theme. That's just my opinion though.

    People seem to think that the only people who take jokes seriously are those who are offended by them. But what I see way too often are the other types of people who take jokes seriously; the ones who see jokes as justifications for their prejudice towards the people being joked about. For example, someone will make a joke about a certain group of people, and someone hearing the joke will go "Yeah, fuck those people. They're so stupid." You see it all the time on social media. Someone will make a video on UA-cam that makes fun of/parodies a certain group of people, and the comments will contain people who have a legitimate hatred towards the people being joked about. They'll say whatever is said in the video, except in earnest rather than as a joke.
    My question is; why is it only the people who are offended by the joke that are told that it's just a joke? Far too often I've heard people say, "Oh lighten up. It's just a joke. Don't be so sensitive." But I don't think I've *ever* heard anyone say, "Hey, this is only meant to be a joke. Don't be an asshole."
    If you want to tell people you're just joking, fine. But don't just say it to those who are offended. Say it to those who take your joke the wrong way and see it as justification for their unsavory behavior as well.

    • @The_Crimson_Fucker
      @The_Crimson_Fucker 8 років тому +2

      +Creepy_Chris First: I can tell you from my personal experience that what you said about people not being told of for taking Jokes as truth is false. You may not have, but as someone who actually seeks out the most offensive humor I can find, I do.
      Also...you say it as if though it were a bad thing, people using jokes to laugh at and ridicule people. Should jokes ridiculing Nazis or Jihadis or the Regressive Left not also be taken seriously? They're based in reality, after all, their purpose is to be snarky, "mean spirited" and, sometimes, cynical. They are, by design, mocking and derisive, that's their purpose, to point at a group of people and say "ha, ha, you're fucking cancer". Heck, that's half of all offensive humor. When George Carlin joked about how religion was retarded, he was being serious.
      "Yeah, fuck those people. They're so stupid" is one of the best sentiments you can get as a result of a joke. I give you the example of jokes at the expense of the KKK. Or are you saying that ridiculing the KKK is a bad thing?

    • @SirMordred524
      @SirMordred524 8 років тому +11

      The Crimson Fucker Perhaps I should have been a little more clear. I'm not referring to jokes being made about the KKK, Nazis and Jihadis. I'm referring to jokes being made about people who are just considered "cringey" on social media. People who have disabilities or disorders (people love to use the words related to autism as insults), fandoms, etc.
      The main difference between the two is that groups like the KKK and such are *legitimately bad people*. Of course they'll be met with ridicule and be referred to as "cancer." But the problem is that people who are either part of a fandom, or just come across as "awkward" or "cringey," will receive the *exact same treatment*. And that's when I have to ask myself whether or not it's really just bullying. It's hard for me not to see these "jokes" as a gateway to exclusion and conflict.
      Hell, look at LeafyIsHere. His channel is basically devoted to roasting people who come off as awkward to a lot of people, and apparently it's all supposed to be comedy. His fans defend him all the time by saying "lol its just satire bro." But when he roasted a certain autistic person, his fans decided it would be funny to send that person death threats and tell him to kill himself. The type of "comedy" he does is harmful and basically promotes bullying and ridicule.
      AlphaOmegaSin also made a video a short while ago that made me unsubscribe to him. It was about this sexual device that could best be described as a fuckable controller, and he pretty much went off on people who were into fetishes that were a little...out there, coming across as completely arrogant throughout the whole video. Of course he tried to write it all off by saying "lol it's just a joke stop being so sensitive," but what didn't help his case was the way he referred to the people questioning him as "beta males," which really says a lot about the kind of person he is, not to mention his Twitter posts regarding the subject came off as more...sincere. And of course people in the comments were saying things along the lines of "lol these ppl r losers who cant get any pussy" in earnest, with no one telling them off for taking this supposed "joke" seriously.
      So yeah, I'm not referring to groups like the KKK and such. I'm referring to people who, at worst, come off as "different" while not doing or promoting any harm (unlike the KKK), yet are ridiculed the same way they are.

    • @The_Crimson_Fucker
      @The_Crimson_Fucker 8 років тому +3

      Creepy_Chris Well...the KKK is a fandom. Why should we be able to ridicule one group of people but not another? And if we can say "Well, you can't ridicule this group" who's to say someone won't someday say "Well...if you can't ridicule one group you can't ridicule anyone?".
      " legitimately bad people" And according to Feminists Men's Rights Activists and Egalitarians are "legitimately bad people", according to the Religious Right gay people and atheists are "legitimately bad people". It's easy to say "well, these people are clearly bad" without realizing that, to those people, another group of people(blacks, for instance) are "legitimately bad".
      Don't get me wrong, the KKK are scum...but that's irrelevant. If anyone is given the power to, of their own accord, arbitrate who is "good" and who is "bad" and who can, therefor, be laughed at and who cannot, then that you're giving that person the power to censor anyone they dislike.
      Everyone gets the shit taken out of them, that's just how humor works. The answer isn't to ban people from saying certain things, it's to grow a thicker skin and get on with your life. This is the kind of over-sensitivity that led to "safe spaces" and "trigger warnings", to University professors being fired for offending student's feelings.
      It's assholery....but this is the internet. That's to be expected. It's unlikely that any of those death threats are valid, and "bullying" is, largely, bullshit online. If you have the option of simply ignoring it, it's not really bullying, you're just being overly sensitive for letting it get to you. Also...ridicule is good. Ridiculing an Autist is a dick thing to do...but some people are dicks, and there's nothing you can really do about it. You can't stop people from being dicks, especially not when they think they're anonymous. But ridiculing people, popular people, is VERY good, IF those people are asshats. Who decides if they're asshats? No one. Everyone. As long as you're not genuinely harassing them, all the ridicule in the world is a positive. I present to you the example of people like Anita Sarkesian, who NEED to be ridiculed, who NEED to be taken the shit out of because they're vile human beings. If the only people you can ridicule are the ones it's been been officially decided are "bad", then ridicule loses it's purpose.
      You're supposed to antagonize the popular assholes that people think are great...that's how you erode their power and show more and more people that they're assholes. Mother Teresa is considered a Saint only because not enough people were ridiculing and criticizing her when she was active.
      Not only can everyone be ridiculed, but everyone SHOULD be ridiculed. It toughens people up, and it stops them from being oversensitive little shits, demanding everyone and everything that hurts their fee-fees be censored. See: "Social Justice Warriors" for excellent example.
      That you unsubscribed from someone that(I assume) you agree with simply because he took the piss out of someones weird fetish tells me that you need to grow a thicker skin yourself. If you're not a normie, you get to be made fun of, welcome to how things are. I have some fucked up fetishes, but you don't hear me bitching and moaning when I get shit for it, or when I hear people joke about them. No, in fact, I laugh along, because it's funny. If you're weird, you need to realize that you're weird and realize that other people think that you're weird. Then live with it. Cringe worthy people get to be cringed at and laughed at, this is because they're cringe worthy. It's natural to want to make fun of them(I give you the example of excessively ugly people thinking they're beautiful and getting shocked when no one agrees)..

    • @SirMordred524
      @SirMordred524 8 років тому +10

      The Crimson Fucker Your first two paragraphs are pretty much just you being technical. Don't pull that whole pseudo-philosopher "who gets to decide who's bad" bullshit. People who purposely ruin other people's lives. People who are manipulative, ignorant, and willing to hurt others constantly in an irrational manner.
      "If you have the option of simply ignoring it, it's not really bullying, you're just being overly sensitive for letting it get to you." So you're a victim-blamer, then. Fantastic. You know, sometimes it isn't so easy for some people to ignore. People like to (unfortunately) believe that cyber bullying doesn't exist, failing to realize that the internet is still a form of communication. And just because it's to be expected on the internet doesn't make it right whatsoever. Normality doesn't make something okay.
      "You're supposed to antagonize the popular assholes that people think are great...that's how you erode their power and show more and more people that they're assholes." And what about the average joes who get ridiculed for petty reasons? People who get ridiculed for what TV show they like or what music they listen to? Hell, that Leafy person I referred to earlier roasts people whose channels don't have much of a following. What "power" is being "eroded" from them? None. They're just being further beaten into the ground, on top of the ridicule they likely face in real life.
      "It toughens people up, and stops them from being oversensitive little shits." You know what else it does? It makes them resent people and society in general. It makes them feel like they don't belong in this world. It definitely doesn't help those who are struggling with insecurity issues and depression, and it could lead to all this pent-up anger that ultimately drives them to take revenge on those who have hurt them, i.e. school shootings. School shooters are likely to have mental problems, but bullying them doesn't exactly help their situation, now does it?
      And your whole, "you need to grow thicker skin" attitude doesn't help much. First of all, if *you* happen to have thick skin to the point where any negativity towards you rolls off your back, then good for you. Others aren't so lucky and are, in fact, sensitive. If someone has a history of being ridiculed throughout their lives, it could be hard for them not to see a joke as a malicious jab towards them. Second, Jim Sterling said it best: "That's exactly what thick skin is; thick. It's not impervious." Someone could be able to take some amount of ridicule, but if it keeps happening to them, it continues to eat away at their "thick skin," and it eventually gets to a point where they get tired of it and it isn't so easy to take anymore. Also, it's great that *you* are able to find it funny, but others don't, because that's another thing about humor; it's subjective.

      I take bad comedy personally because it is just that, bad, it doesn't make me laugh. I like offensive humor when it is done well with a smart point. Take Chris Rock, when he talked about African Americans in jail he did it to illustrate a harsh reality about urban ghetto life. Contrast this with say Carlos Mencia and his jokes that play on existing stereotypes. The stereotypes his jokes play on have either been disproven or are racist and his lack of context to explain the cause of the underlying problem makes him unfunny.
      Anyone can say Mexicans are lazy. But that isn't funny. Explaining the underlying pain and desperation about life is funny. His jokes rely on stereotypes, yelling, and twitching. Being offensive doesn't make you a good comedian, being a good comedian makes you a good comedian.

    This is one of my favourite videos of his. He explains it perfectly.
    The reason I left Twitter was because of racist, arrogant trolls who kept showing up in my inbox using language similar to that of the Nazis. I disabled my account and ignored them even though I was very upset. Those who look to offend for the same of being horrible people who actually believe what they're saying are NOTHING like Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, Ricky Gervais, and Billy Connelly who use theirs to make you laugh and also make a difference. If we want to get offended over something, we should get offended at racist attacks, nazism in young people etc instead of comedy which is designed to make humour out of something dark.
    I'm also an active member on Tumblr, since the site is a great place to talk about fandom and even activism. However, the downside of the "Social Justice" movement on tumblr is that many of the things they get offended over are either
    A) Non Existent
    B) were never intended to be hurtful or offensive such as a radical feminist getting upset calling a man who holds a door open for a woman is oppressive when he's just trying to be nice
    There are a lot of young people on the site, in some cases 14 year olds who are looking to find their identity which is fine. Exploring whether or not you're straight, gay, bi, ace etc is healthy. But then you'll get those who claim to be "Autosexual" or "Sepiosexual" and giving themselves new pronouns and then getting mad when no one has heard of their sexuality and enjoy labeling themselves as oppressed to get attention. This causes people to get frustrated with them as they actually take away the seriousness of those fighting for equality in the LGBT community.
    Not only that people seriously finding flower names offensive because they're "plantkin" or whatever seems incredibly silly.
    Humour allows us to laugh at both these extremes, which is why it's a welcome ray of sunshine in a crazy harsh reality.

      Regardless, I personally don't feel comfortable MAKING those jokes, but hearing them is fine, depending on the person. I just wish there wasn't this sense of social pride that one peoples are better than others. I see everyone as equals in terms of race.
      As a Mexican myself, I feel no real pride in my country of origin or America that I live in now. I just think that I'm nothing special, so I really feel no attachment to either. I don't hate them, it's just that I don't exactly take pride in saying "I'm Mexican," or "I live in America." To me, I'd much prefer to say that I'm happy with who I am, not for any racial or background reasons.

      +Orchestrafanboy19 Yeah, I can understand that.
      While for me, I am pretty, I guess, prideful with being African American, I don't make it out to have any more or less value than other ethnicities and nationalities. It's just a different one with its own culture and history, the same as everyone else has. Each culture and race have their own cool bits, looks, and gimmicks unique to them.
      It's from people who take pride too far that we get racists demeaning others and their origins... Or nationalists saying their country is the best because so and so, when really, all countries are pretty messed up one way or another. This is because all people are messed up one way or another.

    • @Orchestrafanboy19
      @Orchestrafanboy19 8 років тому +3

      Strawberries777 ‪‪ Yeah, I don't think there's anything wrong with saying, "I'm glad I'm ____ race." I may not feel that way, but I certainly don't put other people down for feeling that way. We're not perfect in any sense of the word, but I feel differences are important. If we didn't have them, the world would be in a worse state.
      If the entire world were like me, the advancements that have been made in different fields most likely wouldn't have been made. If only people realized this and reasoned that our differences make us unique. If people realized that others are people just like them, people that want the best out of life and the best for their loved ones, the world would be a better place. I hold onto the hope that intelligent people like you will win over ignorant ones.

    I think he makes a good point. I'm a Mormon and I'm not offended at the Book of Mormon Musical. No one is making me see it. No one is telling me I have to enjoy it. So, there's no reason to be offended. What I am offended at is the double standard, where if this was about Muslims or Buddhists, then it would be offensive. But that's not the creator's fault. They're not the ones saying, "Mormons okay, Muslims off limits."
    The alternative is to Book of Mormon Musical. How is that right or fair? It's not! It's slippery slope that will come back and haunt us.

      @@cherryspice1011 It all depends on who's making the joke and who's the target. This is a great video except for the fact that Doug never talked about the concept of "punching up", which happens to be a rule of comedy that an awful lot of comedians live by, even if it's completely subconsciously. Put simply, "punching up" means that you should not make fun of those that are typically seen as being below you in terms of social standing/equality but instead make jokes at those who are above you (or equal to you). For example, I as a white person would probably rightly be called out as being offensive if I tried to joke about the historical or daily experiences of people of colour. I honestly believe that no topic is ultimately off-limits when it comes to comedy in a general sense, but everyone does have certain topics that are off-limits to them specifically.

    All that bull about Walt Disney supposedly being an anti-semite mainly came from the big animator's strike of 1941 which was spearheaded by prominently Jewish animators like Art Babbitt. The fact that most of them were Jewish as well as adding caricatures of them in a negative light in a few of their shorts and movies lead some people to assume the worst without the proper context. In reality Walt hired several Jews, Hispanics, and women to work on his projects, he pretty much said he doesn't care what ethnic or gender background his artists are from and only cares about how talented they are. Hell, he even convinced the Academy to give James Baskett the first Oscar for a black person, all because of how talented and great an actor he was.

    I think one of the biggest crimes of punching down is that it's not funny. Not in an "on principle" way, like genuinely I signed up to laugh at something and am instead being bored. The best comedians base their humor on personal experiences because the more oddly specific and relatable a joke is, the funnier it is. I'm autistic so I'll use that as an example. It's just tired and stupid to see people mocking our mannerisms, but an autistic comedian doing a whole bit on finding increasingly ridiculous ways they try to stop doing raptor hands? That's fucking hilarious. And like I know what you're thinking, that seems restrictive cause most people aren't a part of that specific demographic. Honestly though, it still works. I laugh way harder at comedy based on the comedian's personal experiences even if *I've* never experienced it in my life.

    I think that humor is affected by the following:
    Timing- Making jokes about natural disasters right after a major one happened isn’t a good idea, that goes without saying. The critic already adressed this when he talked about “too soon”, some things are so disastrous and catastrophic that time is needed to heal before the subject isn’t too painful to approach.
    Subject- this is something I saw just today, a VA for the new resident evil game died and people are commenting “F in the chat” under the IGN article. The reason it’s disrespectful is because “F in the chat” is used more for memes and non important occurrences, so when someone posts that under an article talking about someone that just passed away it can be seen as not taking it seriously.
    Audience- Pretty straightforward, some jokes just won’t work with certain audiences. Best example is probably nazi jokes in Germany. I don’t think I need to explain why most germans don’t find them funny but I’ve met plenty of people who tell germans these types of jokes and expect them to laugh. And when confronted they get uncomfortable about it, as if they never expected that reaction.
    In the end, comedy should callenge you, but it is just as important to challenge the comedy. I doubt that comedy will ever stop changing because we don’t stop changing.
