I gotta say, that second game, when we were going down that hole/ tunnel it really gave me a massive feeling of claustrophobia, and "oh no no no no no". I think having the tunnel be so tight that the vessel bumped into it repeatedly and unavoidably, but still having it in the player's hands rather than reducing it to a cutscene gives a real sense of fear and is just really unnerving in a way that's so different from so much of horror games. A real masterful touch, I think. I also kinda think also having the huge open ocean beforehand and having the player go up to the surface and all around and so far across the map also really heightened the sense of claustrophobia that they created by giving it something to contrast to. I really don't think this game would have worked half as well had they either started in the tunnel or had it as a cutscene.

When I was a kid I used to have a recurring nightmare of being in a submarine. Nothing made me feel so helpless than being in completely unknowable darkness, while feeling that its swift undiscovered dwellers are, without a doubt, in full control over their abode and my situation.
Submarine life varies depending on the type of submarine, your rate (job), country and even the culture of individual crews. It can suck, but it's not that bad.
The beginning of the first game seems very clearly to be an homage to the Gemini Home Entertainment series on UA-cam, specifically the episodes The Deep Blue with the ocean theme and Advanced Mining Vehicle, which has its own ROV with a virtually identical interface. Both of these were pretty dang good. Discover the Ocean sent you down this rabbit hole, fun if only because it's nice seeing you flex your ARG skills. CorpseOcean, I firmly agree that it would be great to see that level of detail with the cockpit in a bigger game.
This reminds me of a deep sea game I played when I was younger -- using the same murky water effect. It was called Shark! Hunting the Great White. It uses heart beat sounds to tell you when a shark is near. Great for a scare if you have thalassophobia or a fear of sharks in general. If you find a copy, give it a try!
me being older now and no longer find terrified screaming men funny, now laying in bed binging Manly’s vids every night because his voice and composure is very calming
_Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep so beware..._ Second game reminded me of that old song somehow. The atmosphere was great. The diving suit coming at you was a heckuva good freaky scare. Then going down into that ship/ruin/Atlantis? was very cool. It always reminds you that there is a lot of the oceans that are still not explored. Good job!
Fun fact: When Manly uploads long videos like the fnaf series, I start planning snacks ahead so I can watch them and relax! It's gotten to the point where I literally went "Oh these fruits sound really good rn! I better save them for Manly's next upload though-"
Oh! I was literally binging deep sea videos yesterday after I saw a video of the Giant Phantom Jellyfish yesterday! This is cool, time to be horrified!
today i learned my favorite jellyfish was also called the giant phantom jellyfish!! wow! i think they’re beautiful, and i don’t believe theyre able to sting anything. thats really interesting!!
I love the idea of a helmsmen in the deep ocean just pausing, looking up at the hatch above his head and just thinking to himself "I shouldn't do that".
YOOO! that red orchestra 2 tank call out was soo rad, I remember playing through the tank missions in the campaign for that game and being blown away. That game is incredible for its infantry combat and stuff, but the tanks are incredibly fun as well.
Hey Manly, have you heard of Crimson Rain? It's a game I haven't seen anyone play and it doesn't show up when I look it up, so I am curious! Could you take a look? I can give you the link.
Fun facts of the day: The 5% information about the ocean is misleading and the discoveries of the Challenger Deep were either fish smaller than a foot or plastic bags and candy wrappers, a small reminder that humans are the real deep sea monsters ;)
So marine biologists will just continue to kick the 5% explored can down the road to justify continuing having grant money dumped into their hobby? Sounds about right.
@@chilomine839 By the contrary, it's because marine biologists have funds that we learn that the 5% is just misinformation spread by media, popular entertainment and other groups that use it just to say it so they have a easy way of opening an act that "impacts".
Sad thing is most of the ocean is empty space. That's why we only explored 5% of the ocean (nowadays it's like 16% explored). So yeah, we probably won't find any eldritch god in the sea.
maybe it is, but we also ONLY explored 16% of it. 84% has been unexplored and unseen. Maybe there might be an eldritch god or something scarier in the big space of the ocean
The blog is about a lovecraft monster called the deep one who turn people into deep ones or basically fish people which also explains the not human thing with the skeleton because deep ones start off looking human even though they arent.
Watching this as someone with severe thalassophobia but a deep interest in marine biology, I'm... underwhelmed. It has so much potential, but I feel like a lot of ocean-fear horror games miss the mark a bit. These aren't exceptions. Orcas throw sharks around for fun, a lot of the mapped ocean is empty space (that 5% is bs), and overall, neither of these quite tackle everything that makes the ocean scary to me at least. What makes the ocean scary is that the ocean shows no mercy. Whether by it's depths or what lies within, whether we know what/why/how it is or not, it doesn't matter how much value anything or anyone lost held-- a submarine at the bottom of the ocean remains. One big wave can take 100 people with it. Many people lost at sea never to return. Submarines bursting as they sink too deep. The panic when you can't bring yourself above the surface, or the pressure on your body. It's hopeless. At least on land, you can take a last big breath of air, mercy that water cannot grant. I do see great potential in these developers, however I do feel like there could've been more. :') idk but yeah
I've never really examined why I feel a great sense of dread with the ocean, and ocean related things... But I'm an aussie and have nearly drowned in it. Our wildlife isn't even as scary as a lot of ppl make it out to be (the animals with the highest kill count on humans is horses and cows here) but all that.. yeah you describe it really well. no mercy or escape when you get in too deep and the pressure and just... how we're quite literally out of our element. We weren't made for the ocean. We're so out of place that small things going wrong can be disastrous
also lol, yeah, getting facts straight about animals helps. and the more you learn typically the more terrible and frightening you start to see nature. it's still beautiful, but in a very brutal way. I almost want to compare it to the beauty of some murder scenes in Hannibal (tv show). like... there's a lot we could work with. I'm honestly still haunted by real footage of a giant fin squid, and even pictures makes me want to scream. there's footage out there of shark pups EATING EACH OTHER WHILE STILL IN THE WOMB. there's so, so much to work with
I actually like the touch that first game seems like a nice documantary familyfriendly film. Every time Manly reads aloud the title "Discover the ocean" i feel these nice vibes back from my childhood.

LMAO the youtube game category set to "subnautica" ... never change x) also, to answer a question the first game leaves hanging: the oldest form of multicellular animal is thought to be the sponge. the line between "animal" and "plant" is admittedly far blurrier than you'd expect 😔
I don’t think I’m the only one that saw it but in the second game the second vhs tape at18:36 it say for a millisecond “we GAVE UP everything” only to change to “we LOST everything”
8:13 on the left leg (our left) of the creature, on the inside edge, the text spells out 'twitter' so there's probably a cipher for a twitter account too
I don't know if you will see this Manly but I have long wanted to see you play SOMA! You were talking about the fear of being under the ocean and SOMA is honestly the best psychological horror with the best atmosphere and implications about our existence and what it is to be a conscious human being that I have ever seen and I think you will enjoy it! I won't spoil the ending!
1. 95% of the ocean is unexplored because it is simply empty waters 2. Sharks arent the deadliest prey, like not at all. Even dolphins can kill a shark
The first part of discover the ocean actually does look like some sort of learning activity I did in middle school once, which kinda makes it creepier in my mind, it looks like it’d actually be something used in schools aside from the creepy glitching and imagery.
That end underwater structure section gave me MAJOR flashbacks to the lil Extras game from the DVD of "Atlantis: The Lost Empire". You had to choose up/down/left/right, sometimes in a quick-time-event fashion to avoid running into something, to navigate through a maze of a stone ruin to escape in your lil sub. It was always simple thing, but it was enough to get me to play it until I won, no matter how old I got. The structure looked remarkably similar, to my memory.

@@waffleauflauf4213 ye, im getting tired of "Only 5% of the ocean are explored" yeah what are you gonna see in an unhabitable zone? Probably nothing!
@@Supernob222 a trash can that contains manly’s soul?
@@waffleauflauf4213 you might want to use a different term other than Dead Zone because that is a specific phenomena in large bodies of water that has to do with oxygen levels.

I seriously love your dedication to even solving the cyphers and riddles. I really appreciated it.
A watched a bunch of those "Deepsea oddities" videos they show a lot of awesome stuff and discoveries about, well, the deep ocean.
I love it when Manly does some of this ARG content.
Aye, its always a pleasant surpise.
What is ARG?
@@elnovillomapuchedehomerus2412 it means Alternate Reality Game, it's a content that needs people solving enigmas to understand what the content means or solving enigmas in order to continue the story
I love how you said 'samekichi' when the shark appeared, I had to replay that a few times because I can't believe you just drop a wadanohara reference and it made my day for some reason so thanks manly !
Manly does give off a chill vibe when he's doing research
>horror game about ocean
>shows completely normal sea molluscs
Reality is often times scarier than fiction
Under water horror?! Awesome!! It's my greatest fear lol. Love these types of games cause they hit differently than most horror for me, mainly cause nearly drowned a couple times and have seen scary things on occasion in the water.
Man, screw the ocean. Me and my homies hate the ocean

what we are looking at at 4:40 appears to be a Whalefall: a feeding condition where a whale carcass falls to the bottom of the ocean to be picked clean by crabs, octopuses, eels and worms. MBARI has an interesting video about it with a ton of pure white octopuses that they find.
My mom has re-occurring nightmares about swimming in a deep, dark body of water and eventually having to accept drowning.
At the mercy of Cthulhu.
i used to have a lot of vivid nightmares about the ocean. that shit is just scary
Am I the only person that as soon as I know I'm dreaming, I can do whatever I want in said dream?
The beginning of the first game seems very clearly to be an homage to the Gemini Home Entertainment series on UA-cam, specifically the episodes The Deep Blue with the ocean theme and Advanced Mining Vehicle, which has its own ROV with a virtually identical interface. Even the presentation of the game is very similar.
I'm really really embarrassed at how hard I laughed at "It's discovered, let's never go back."
I used to love watching people play that game
me being older now and no longer find terrified screaming men funny, now laying in bed binging Manly’s vids every night because his voice and composure is very calming
If you found screaming youtubers funny at any point in your life it's still very concerning
_Many brave hearts are asleep in the deep so beware..._
Second game reminded me of that old song somehow.
Manly is my daily dose of happiness.
Same ill literally save manlys vid for later for when I'm eating he's the best
Games: ocean related
UA-cam: ah yes subnautica
I just finished a 7 hours study session and honestly this video feels like a blessing
Good luck in your studies:)
Ocean horror games are really scary without needing to do much
Subnautica gives me chills and it's not even technically a horror game.
We need more of these analog horror games, they're pretty good!
I recently discovered analogue horror with the Mandela Catalogue. I'm starting to love the genre a lot.
I love the mandela catalogue
Damn that’s quite a start, try Gemini if you haven’t yet.
I love the idea of a helmsmen in the deep ocean just pausing, looking up at the hatch above his head and just thinking to himself "I shouldn't do that".
@12:11 “I shouldn’t do that”
Depending how deep the submersible is, it probably wouldn’t open even if you pushed
26:48 Rare scene of Manly getting scared
YOOO! that red orchestra 2 tank call out was soo rad, I remember playing through the tank missions in the campaign for that game and being blown away.
What is it about? Now I'm curious
"So close to 1M Manly! How do you feel about it?"
Manly: 00:20
man, you know what was a good wet game? endless ocean. not even a horror game but just the atmosphere of some places.. lol i love it
Fun facts of the day: The 5% information about the ocean is misleading and the discoveries of the Challenger Deep were either fish smaller than a foot or plastic bags and candy wrappers, a small reminder that humans are the real deep sea monsters ;)
Those 95% are just dead zone and unhabitable. Just an added fact
@@Supernob222 no, dead zones are a very specific thing in oceanography that has to do with oxygen levels that cause mass mortality.

Me: has no one ever been to the beach before? It’s right there!
Totally didn't expect Manly to delve into that arg a little, I loved it
See all that green? That's how you know all these fish people are successful and retired. You can also tell by their iconic hat.
green and retired, you could say
I am now imagining Manly as an XCOM commander waging war against Cthulhu, since he knows Terror from the Deep.
If you pause around 26:50 you can see a seemingly dead body inside the diving suit
Sad thing is most of the ocean is empty space. That's why we only explored 5% of the ocean (nowadays it's like 16% explored). So yeah, we probably won't find any eldritch god in the sea.
Tfw no cute 666ft Cthulhu gf
Lmfaoo
Scientists only say the ocean is empty space so no one will explore and unleash any eldritch horrors upon the world.
maybe it is, but we also ONLY explored 16% of it. 84% has been unexplored and unseen. Maybe there might be an eldritch god or something scarier in the big space of the ocean
"we probably won't find any eldritch god in the sea."
I sure as hell hope not
Really enjoying the chance to see you show off those ARG master cryptography skills Manly
So close to a million subs lets go baby. This bad ass man deserves it
I love how he was more worried about how the VHS tape was still able to work rather than the actual contents
18:36
For anyone wondering, it says "We gave up everything".
I love how the first one looks like every 90’s early 2k’s educational video shown in schools
The blog is about a lovecraft monster called the deep one who turn people into deep ones or basically fish people which also explains the not human thing with the skeleton because deep ones start off looking human even though they arent.
The fishier Innsmouthians are primarily hybrids lol
Our wildlife isn't even as scary as a lot of ppl make it out to be (the animals with the highest kill count on humans is horses and cows here)
but all that.. yeah you describe it really well. no mercy or escape when you get in too deep and the pressure and just... how we're quite literally out of our element.
"Adhere by safety protocols" they always say, before immediately giving you tasks like that. Management nightmare!
10:30 The "weird blog" is about Shadow Over Innsmouth, its a short story by HP Lovecraft about Innsmouthers that lived under the sea and worshipped a lovecraftian god named Dagon.
when manly got into the temple area i kept thinking he'd eventually check the radar and the whole screen would be covered in a big dot, implying something massive was down there
Man, that second game gave me the chills.
I really don't think I'd enjoy being in a small deep-sea sub at all, mysterious cyclopean ruins or not.
These games were almost as scary as being underwater in Mario 64.
Love how these water horror games just magically find you
3:30 for me the fear isn’t drowning alone, it’s drowning knowing you’re *not* alone
"How did that tape still work?"
**Bonk**
"Oh god!"
Nice to sea another amazing playthrough Manly.

also, to answer a question the first game leaves hanging: the oldest form of multicellular animal is thought to be the sponge. the line between "animal" and "plant" is admittedly far blurrier than you'd expect 😔
I don’t think I’m the only one that saw it but in the second game the second vhs tape at18:36 it say for a millisecond “we GAVE UP everything” only to change to “we LOST everything”
No one can beat Frictional Games & Yames' underwater horror games

"You know what was a good game? Subnautica 1"
Ouch, you don't gotta do below zero like that
"Everything is prey" now they're talking like a human
1. 95% of the ocean is unexplored because it is simply empty waters
2. Sharks arent the deadliest prey, like not at all. Even dolphins can kill a shark
Thank you, I hate when people try to use the 5 % line as an argument for there being monsters and stuff in the ocean. It's stupid

Prey? 🤨
Predator maybe?
Elephant seals have no business diving that far down.
Cool game but sponges are probably the first multicellular organisms and not jellyfish. Choanoflagellate are very important around this topic.
The first part of discover the ocean actually does look like some sort of learning activity I did in middle school once, which kinda makes it creepier in my mind, it looks like it’d actually be something used in schools aside from the creepy glitching and imagery.
Thank you for taking the time to give us another amazing video while making the part 3 of fnaf, it's really nice
Ooo, yes some off the wall content by manly!
There's a reason why we evolved to leave the ocean, we just forgot what we're afraid of.
