Hello Ril Lass , Extremely sorry for the late reply , I used Renderman RIS , Added a HDRI image to the Dome Light , also there are many lights placed to fake the Global Illumination effect, I wanted to try my lighting skills. most of them are area lights. I am planning to provide the scene files too... so that some people can benefit.

Hello , your work is amazing.
this is yogini from India and i am learning and new to this field. I just came accross one thing that you need to have basic knowledge of compositing s/w nuke. Can you please explain it to me.why and for exactly what the nuke is required?
Which are the important topics i need to cover? Is it just necessary for compositing passes or for something more? I really need to know this. Please explain. How much of basics you need to know?

    • @swapnilhalarnkar8310
      @swapnilhalarnkar8310  4 роки тому +1

Hello Yogini ji , thanks for checking out my demoreel, and kind words.
      1) you need to have basic knowledge of compositing s/w nuke.
      - Nuke is Industry standard when it comes to Composting. As CG Industry is evolving many big Studios need
people who can do Lighting as well as Composting. I work as a Lighting and Composting Artist. Lighting cannot
be restricted to introducing lights to the scene only but every lighter should have Minimum of Look development
skill which includes Texturing , Shading and post processing that is Composting. Do not get demotivated as you
need to learn lots of things , everyone learns with time. Take up one thing at a time. As far as you keep learning
everyday, you will do good .
      2) why and for exactly what the nuke is required?
      - Nuke is nothing different than photoshop. Nuke or any composting software like Fusion , combustion ,helps to
combine different footage's(images in sequence). There are basically 3 departments whose work is combined
in Nuke a) Lighting Renders b) FX or special effects (fire , dust etc.) c) Mattpaint (sky etc.) . Nuke helps to
combine all 3 footage's from this departments.
      - Recent Renderes like Vray, Arnold , Renderman etc. are able to output different AOV like diffuse , specular, SSS ,
incandescence we can use this AOV`s from the renders if you render EXR format from Maya, Max etc.
for example if we want to reduce specular (SSS, diffuse, etc) any specific object you are able to do it.
      - Nuke we can add Real Camera lenses effects like glow, vignetting , defocus , which wouldn't be too easy if we do
      it in Maya.
      - the list is never ending but you can research about Continuity between shots, composition , Editing , 2D projections, camera Tracking, you should find many videos on this topic.
      3) Which are the important topics i need to cover?
      - Lighting is a never ending Topic but to become a good Lighter you should learn
      1) Science of Light (How light works in Real world)
      2) Study of Color and Composition , Photography and Paintings.
      3) Cinematography ( Lighting in Cg is not different than Real world Cinema).
      4) How Physically Based Renderer work ( science behind Arnold , renderman etc.)
      5) Linear workflow , ACES LUT ( study of Color space)
I think this are must learn for any Lighter apart from that if we have knowledge of below aspects you can do wonders
      6) Scripting Python and OSL (Open Shading Language).
      7) Modeling and Texturing software like Z brush, Substance painter, Mari etc.
      3) Is it just necessary for compositing passes or for something more?
      - when you are working on your personal work than you have a freedom of choosing the method, you can try to achieve most of lighting and output in Maya, which is really good way , I believe in 90% of Maya renders and 10%
in Nuke. There is no perfect rule but if you can get most of the output in Maya than you will be a good lighter.
      - there will be instances where you have to use lots of composting for example any scene which has glows and
self illuminating objects we have to rely lot on composting, this is just one example.
      - Composting and Nuke is easier than learning Maya, and its a must learn skill. Just learn it.
      6) Please explain. How much of basics you need to know?
      - I think you can learn Nuke basics in 2 to 3 days depends on person to person, also to learn basics, Foundry website
has good amount of resources. If you want to join as only lighter if the Post at the studio mentions only Lighting,
than basic Nuke is good enough , but if you want to join as Lighting and Composting Artist, than it will be troublesome to join that post, as you need better knowledge of Nuke. Learn as much as you can, I never knew nuke at my first Studio, but it was 14 years back.
I am a self taught Artist I have never taken any course to learn Maya , Nuke Max so its easier if you have passion.
I deed My Bachelor of Fine Art that helps me a lot though.
I hope Yogini ji I was able to answer your queries, for any specific queries , please feel free to contact me at swapnilcgworld@gmail.com or www.linkedin.com/in/swapnil-halarnkar-b2a4a1a3/
      - wish you success

Hey, I'm interested in lighting myself. I'm new and trying to learn. Question: why do you have spill, key, spec as separate (renders?) I don't get how/why the lights were separated and seemingly put together in post? Thanks a ton!
As people have already said: nice work!

    • @ArborealOreo
      @ArborealOreo 3 роки тому +3

I can answer that: this kind of prepared rendering is just so we can save time if changes occur later on. Imagine this: your supervisor comes up to you and says "This scene will take place at Dawn now, not in the afternoon." Now that you have the spill separated, you can leave it as is and render the key light as pink instead of bluish-white. Same thing with all these other channels.

      @@ArborealOreo oh wow. Alright, thanks.
I'm sorry(?), But how do you separate the lights out? Do you turn them on and off; or is it aovs (and some setting?) What's the workflow , I mean.

Hello Fiona ! sorry for the late reply ! yes it will be separated out in AOV , light groups , it was rendered separately only to show each light groups separately. In reality it is combination of all lights in one image , or beauty pass. Separation of EXR AOV will help you to control it in Nuke.

Hi, how did you make this reel? Did you just render out different passes from the main image, and then just put them in a video editing program to make the video? What were your thought process?

    • @swapnilhalarnkar8310
      @swapnilhalarnkar8310  4 роки тому

I have lighted it in beauty itself, deed not render as separate passes , I have just shown AOV` s separation, which makes Beauty as exr, all modern renderer are able to output each light information into different channels if it make sense. but this AOV`s helps to enhance the output further . I think in terms of Composition first a good composition is part and parcel of lighting , even well illuminated scene with not so good composition will not create a good appeal. Lighting and composition is never ending , my field of study is Cinematography , Color , composition , effects of colors and contrast on human psychology , how color support and deceive each other , Physics of light , how we can tell story with lighting , Paintings and color schemes, I do watch lots of Lighting Tutorials :) , I also try to learn from people, so not limited to 1 subject, but specifically when I created most of this images I focused more on Visual depth and eye movement. Hope that answers your question, please do read through other comments and reply , you may be able to understand my approach , surely what I look for is how to create beauty in an image.

TheNintroller Lighting serves the purpose of visually driving the story, not just "adding light to 3d models". Lighting artists, while technically well rounded, have a very artistic eye and understanding of color, which is why most of the best lighters can also draw. not sure who you thought would take on this responsibility if there were no lighters.

@@MrTheNintroller 4 years old but your comment is just that ignorant. It all plays together, any scene you WOULD cry to would be in no small part to the lighting and you don't even realise because that's what lighting does subconsciously. I hope your perspective has changed 4 years on because that was a grossly ignorant thing to say.
