    Thanks for making these videos. Just came across them and planning to use Air manager in combination with "the knobster". Such a big difference compared to using a mouse and a keyboard. It''s great that there is so much to learn on the internet thanks to people like you! Greetings from The Netherlands.

    Russ: We APPRECIATE ALL your efforts. I am now beginning the build of a flight sim cockpit (based of course, on your wonderful advice, for my two grandsons, age 11 & 12, and will start off with a
    C172 Garmin G1000 cockpit and now, after seeing this video, want to see how I can maximize the panel/screen real estate into the space, along side the two 15.6" touch screen monitors I have just ordered. Oh, just in case you at all wish to know, I will be using the Honeycomb yoke and their throttles when they finally arrive.
    So, Gosh, thanks again.

      @@rbarlow well, ,the ‘Thunderbolt?? Ones cost $750 so they are out, any suggestions appreciated..
      Oh Russ, my grandsons do everything together so am thinking of making it a dual yoke system (maybe one honeycombed and one another brand. so that they can not only learn but practice together and was working on the initial staging of the instrument panel tonight and with. 39” w and 14 “ high panel, I think I can just fit in two Honeycombed yokes (if need be) and one Honeycombed throttle....which can be used long term for multi engine training later on.
      With the two 15.6” monitors, I’m not sure but am hoping to do the instrument pop outs you showed using the same program you showed, also planning on possibly using three 50” tv’s and mounting them on a pvc tubular frame that ‘Roger Dodger’ shows on his videos. Much mor e to go though and next week We are taking them for another discovery flt.
      Btw, really am grateful for your endeavors. Boy, they help and thank God for the knobster...

    I’m a heli pilot and was trying to setup air manager w G5 for an LNAV approach on the Skyhawks 172 for some approach refreshers. I couldn’t get it to show me a glide slope even though I’ve got the approach activated. Glide slope shows on the VOR in the cockpit just not on VOR or G5 on my Air Manager screen. Are you able to get this to work? Wondering what I’m missing.

    Thanks Russ. This is a pragmatic solution for the (excellent) FS2020 A32NX from Fly By Wire. Like you I don't want to struggle with a mouse in the 3D view to glance at the PFD whilst landing. So I'll experiment with a PFD on my laptop and the 3D view on the desktop GTX1080TI.
    The G5 has about 95% of the Airbus PFD - the 5 columns of FMA could be a separate instrument.

    Can a G5 be added to AirManger that is flying a Cessna 172SP (Laminar) or the REP version? Or do we have to link certain dataref's to get it to talk?

      The video is the laminar C172SP. I just used the standatd free C172 instruments to augment the G5s. The REP will depend on whether any of the datarefs are custom. I suspect if there are enough requests Ralph will do a REP version just as he did for the C172 pay panel.

    I usually like your detailed vids. Here though would have helped to give a bigger picture. Who can use these, what do I need to make them work, will they work in any plane? Looks interesting, but unfortunately very unclear as to how these integrate with the sim programs. You mention air manager but for those of us who don’t have that the rest is a bit confusing.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 роки тому +2

      Anas T. Yes I agree as I didn’t stress this is an Air Manager only product. Of course Air Manager works with virtually all sims including Aerofly FS2. DCS is one of the few that aren’t compatible. These are just additional Air Manager instruments that can be added to 2D sim panel layouts. I tried to make this vid shorter and less detailed because many complain that is a problem with my typical 20 minute vids. Thanks for the feedback.

      Anas T. I agree with you. I, too usually enjoy Russ’ videos but this one left me feeling “dumber than a rock”.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 роки тому +2

      Anas T. I agree on the video size. I had a second GoPro set up to get a close up but it failed. As a hobby that produces no profit I just had to lower my standards and accept what I had due to time constraints. As for the lacking details I have scores of detailed videos about Air Manager on my channel at all levels so in just introducing a single new instrument I just couldn’t go over it all again. Air Manager is a stand alone app that can run alongside the sim on the same computer or on a networked computer. It displays sim data 2D instrument panels on LCD screens and allows inputs on the panel which are mirrored in the sim. You can choose instruments from a free community produced library of over 600 instruments and create your own panel layouts. You can also author your own instruments using Air Manager. There are also premium pay instruments and panels including the G5 in this video. There is also am Android and iPad version that has library instruments and can make panel layouts but cannot create custom instruments. Air manager also allows creation of Arduino and raspberry Pi based hardware that can interface with the sim using the same single plugin. Air Manager works with FSX, Aerofly FS2, P3D, X-Plane, and soon the new FS2020( in beta now). Hopefully that helps explain generally what Air Manager is. If you want more details let me know.

      @@rbarlow Thanks Russ. I have the G5 installed and working. I also bought the RealSimGear G500 software instrument because the Cessna 172 that I am using in real life for my instrument rating training uses both. The G500 loaded and appears on the C172 but for some reason it won't power up. I have a ticket into RSG support for their help in getting it working. Once that is done, that should really speed up my instrument knowledge and help save money on both instructor and plane time. I really like your videos - keep up the good work. Russ, I have Xplane 12 and air manager running on a 15.6” screen. I just bought the G5s and can’t get the button and knob to turn blue and twist in air manager. All the other instruments work with touch. Do you think this is an Xplane 12 issue, or am I doing something wrong.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  Рік тому

      Not clear completely. Are the G5s and other instruments running in a single panel on the touch monitor? The G5s have a separate instrument for screen and bezel. They are sold as a panel but to include in a panel you need to add the two parts for each G5 you want into the panel with the other instruments. Explain a little more and I’ll try to help. This is a unique issue as far as I know so I don’t think it is XP12. At least as long as it can operate with mouse inputs it isn’t XP12.

    • @ggriff767
      @ggriff767 Рік тому

      They are setup as a single panel with the other instruments. It looks exactly like your panel in the video. I can touch the knob on the bezel and it brings up the different options such as setting altitude for AI and adjusting heading for HSI, but that’s it. It wont let me push to select any of the options and I can’t scroll over with my finger. The knob on the bezel doesn’t turn blue.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  Рік тому

      @@ggriff767 can you confirm that all other knobs on the panel work for touch control. You didn't answer if you can turn the knob on the G5 using the mouse. Place the mouse cursor over the knob and your mouse scroll wheel should turn the knob.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  4 роки тому +1

      There is no way to "hardwire" the HSI to either VOR1/2 or GPS in the setup. The individual aircraft(sim) usually has a HSI select switch that determines what is displayed on the HSI. The Cessna 172 and Beech baron in X-Plane both have such a switch but selecting what is displayed on the G5 is not selectable on the unit itself. The G1000 and GTN have the feature too.

    In advance I ask a thousand excuses if my presentation is a bit abrupt and does not seem out of context. But I follow you and I see how important simulation is for you, and I dare to give a slightly unpleasant opinion about this version of MSFS2020. Because I think you will dispute with me in some aspects. What big scam is MSFS2020. You do the same with fSpanels. Is all ready a month . and Microsoft still working on a pruduct is not finish. That MSFS2020. Still a Beta version. Is not a finish product and by the way to expensive for what comes as final product. i still saying This MSFS2020 is a Fraud. Microsoft did not advance on nothing. We are back to MSFS 95. where you had to constantly update the simulator in all its facets. But 25 years ago it was understandable. We need to create a database. But Microsoft still uses the same database from 25 years ago, and is only interested in updating the data elitically. But it offers it as. Highly up to date. I don't think I will wait another 25 years to see if Microsoft finally senses its database, its maps and if it will finally make an ATC sounds at least bit like a real ATC. If suddenly the experts who design these recreations, invent something, so that the ATC makes stop a truck or a bus in the middle of the taxi way So Microsoft uses artificial intelligence? To assume what you should not assume. The funny thing about all this technology, that they want to force the world to accept is that in this Flight Simulator there is nothing that is a complete success failure. As it is possible that the taxi lights appear inside the taxiways, intersections and runway heads and I have analyzed it, there is not a single taxi light outside of them, they are all inside the taxiways without failure. That is why I say that the fault they have is perfect. And even worse. Who is responsible for checking that the final product offers quality. I think those who were in charge of supervising the revisions. They must have been working on the new MSFS2030, once again and I emphasize it because I want someone who has direct contact with the simulator program to listen to it. And hear from longtime and loyal simmers. Not this number of simmers who have no idea how a plane flies. But they give you a lesson in how to prepare a flight in a 747 or a 787 or an A320 in 10 minutes. Please. Note. The great difference between simulation and video game that the vast majority confuse, Is. Who knows what it does, looks for its replica. But who has no idea. Believe that virtually is reality. They are 2 different dimensions and I think Microsoft has confused the concept, just for their monetary interests.
    They are 2 different worlds. One, is totally different world from the one Microsoft is offering.
    It is the Flight simmers Perspective. And the other, is extremely out of reality. Those are video gamers, who confuse the concept of virtually and reality with simulation.

      Edwin Bejarano thank you for your detailed opinion. I agree that MS and its motives are suspect. I don’t know if all this talk about wanting to be a real pilot’s training sim is for real of of it is to make it seem more legitimate as a game for kids who know nothing about aviation. Still I am trying to give then the benefit of the doubt. I have to admit much of the scenery is stunning but as I said in a recent video that is probably not that important for pilot training as long as the airport looks real( no taxi lights in taxiways) and the scenery topography is correct( FS has no towers) and looks plausible( not a distraction). There is still much more to a real sim beyond scenery. Things like aircraft systems that work, working and accurate autopilots and nav gear, accurate and updatable nav databases and training aids like instructor stations, replay, and savable situations to set up maneuvers quickly. I am trying to be patient but I was surprised how unfinished FS2020 was at launch and still is. I don’t disagree with most of your comments but am maybe a bit mor forgiving since most of my experience is in X-Plane so I am reluctant to be too harsh at first.

    The only thing I can see these syms are good for are learning different Instrument clusters and possibly for improving your Instrument scan proffincey when simulating actual instrument conditions to Minimums or the DH. I see absolutely no reason to watch FAKE scenery go by. It's about as real as a adult playing a Childish video game.

    • @rbarlow
      @rbarlow  3 роки тому

      Not sure I agree completely after FS2020. The scenery is so accurate you really can familiarize yourself with and area or route you intend to fly VFR. Definitely some value there although I agree keeping up one’s instrument scan is a good sim use. Even more I think procedural training is probably the best role for home sims. In the airlines they used to provide us with big posters of the front panel and overhead that er put on the wall.. We would sit in front of these and practice our checklists, flows and flight profiles in a ritual we called “chair flying” . Home sims are perfect for this and much more interesting and effective than a poster!
