FLIGHT CHOPS DISCLAIMER:
I am a "weekend warrior" private pilot, I fly for fun with no intentions of going commercial. I have had my PPL for over 15 years, but still consider each flight a learning experience - I generally take detailed notes after each flight to remind myself what went well or what I could do to improve.... Having the GoPro cameras to record flights like this is invaluable. I find these self analysis videos very helpful in my constant quest to improve, and am happy to share. Feedback is invited; however, please keep it positive.

this needs to be pinned : )
Haha - I totally wrote it to pin it, and did so immediately... then I made an edit and it was unpinned and I didn’t notice - thank for catching that - it is now re pinned :)
@@FlightChops Hey steve, what track did you use for the intro?
Hi Flight Chops, When will you be announcing the winner for the giveaway of the flight sim cockpit?
Love this video so Informative well done lads😎😎
As a real pilot of 34 years, 23 years as a Naval Aviator and 11 years as a Law Enforcement pilot, I can't stress enough how important simulation is in helping to produce technically and tactically proficient aviators. The military has known this for years. Mission rehearsal, procedure review, emergency procedures that can't be accomplished realistically or safely in the aircraft, crew resource management scenarios.....the list goes on and on. Great video. I use my little home sim all the time for instrument proficiency, and just for fun.
Doug Russell - Yeap. Nailed it on the head. Thanks for your service 👍
As a former simulation mechanic at Flight Safety in Broken Arrow and an up and coming pilot myself I could agree more. Trying to learn in the aircraft isn’t very proficient and is extremely costly.
Doug Russell - Now if we could just convince the various flight authorities around the world to allow us to log that Sim time, that would be awesome, but their requirements are far more complex than necessary and the cost far too much.
I started simming about 10 years ago - the progression of hardware/software in that time has been amazing - also, guys like you who help all of us to figure out how things work have really helped - keep it up - I wish you were there when I started as a resource - many will learn from you. Thanks.
Built a pc from scrap parts so I could fit a modern sim in the budget. It has been great for getting proficient in procedures. Actual physical gps and radios look amazing!
Can you help me. I’m looking to build one as well
I am a kid and I am like you when you were a kid. I love aviation and I have X-plane 11 and a logitech X-treme 3D pro joystick. I didn't even know that it was possible to make one of those setups. That's amazing bud. Keep up the good work!
Can’t wait until Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020
Justin - The scenery looks amazing 👍
Just pray it's actually a new MSFS and not "Microsoft Flight 2.0"
@@Guysm1l3y This. Exactly This. Microsoft Flight was awful.
Why?? How's the ATC??? Don't know?? THAT GRAPHICS IS bs!
Is it gonna be an arcade game or an almost real sim as it used to be ?
I had no idea how advanced those things are! I saw one like 30 years ago that someone had at home, and it looked more like a video game than anything I'd take seriously. They're amazing now! Thanks for sharing, Steve - I'd have had no idea just how far they have come! 👍👍
I really hope you will do some sim videos showing ILS, GPS approaches etc. It would be neat for you to do a short IFR sim flight from startup to shutdown maybe with a missed approach and diversion to alternate.
Really great topic! Thanks for highlighting the benefits of flight sims for real pilots. It's tough to make time to stay proficient as a VFR pilot. I too find that I can keep my head in the game in between trips to the real airport just by spending an hour each night after work on the flight sim. X-Plane 11, Three 27" Monitors and TrackIR makes it very real. Now, I just need to spend the extra for all the dials to complete the feel.
Video editing on an airline tray table - Now that's dedication
I use X-Plane 11 - Zibo Mod 737! Sometimes I fly on P3D as well, and use both on Vatsim or Pilotedge.
That’s incredible. I love how far the flight sim technology has come, and can only imagine how much further it will go.
That looks awesome! Thanks for sharing it with us. I’m no longer able to fly as pilot in command in the real world and I’ve been occupying myself with drones and with VR, but to be able to fly a simulator would be incredible. Especially a realistic panel with knobs and switches and dials like you were able to get in your video. I’ll check out the website you suggested but I’m going to have questions. I hope you keep up with more videos on the subject. Again, Thanks so much for sharing this with us. It would be a dream come true for an old man to fly again.
Happy to help, ask away!
Thanks for the quick response. I’m full of questions and I’ll take you up on asking them. I’m going to do some research before getting too deep. I want to be a little bit smarter before I trip over my enthusiasm but right now this is looking like a done deal. You say the panel for the giveaway is about $2,000 worth of equipment. Can I just order what I want and have a tech build it? Thanks again and thanks for your help.
What are you using for your monitor?
You ever get your own setup?
Lovely setup! Making me anxious to get back behind the controls, haven’t flown since I got my PPL financial issue but my mind and dream is still alive...
Great video. I feel like I need to wait for details on the new Microsoft Flight Simulator that was just announced last week before I build a dedicated Flight Sim rig. I'll be curious to see if the specs of that game significantly change the hardware that should go into this kind of rig.
Like many said already it was great to see you at the Expo n attend your seminar.
I'm doing my check ride next month, thank you for inspiring me getting back into flying!
jeff martin - Good luck, passed mine on Sunday!
Good job! I built a flight simulator myself last year with almost the same specs, except I have the older 1080 ti instead of 2080 ti. I'm currently running Xplane VR with an oculus rift, and while it's an flight simulator experience on a completely different level (being to have 360 degree vision is unbelievably helpful for looking for ground references), there are some shortcomings for VR flight simming. A couple of biggest downfall for me is you can't see where your physical controls are, so sometimes you'll bump a control or your table with the VR googles on, and once in a while I"ll encounter microstutter and that will reset the default viewing angle. Let me know if you have any questions about VR.
VR is fantastic for pattern work and formation flying. I believe it's a poor candidate in its current form, though, for end to end IFR flying because of how challenging it is to review approach plates, copy clearances, and to manipulate the radios that are needeed when flying online with ATC. One of FlightChops' goals is to become more comfortable with the Garmin 430. Short of having haptic gloves and really high resolution headsets, VR is probably the single worst environment to practice that task. His current hardware is ideal for it.
A2A T6 Texan is my favorite plane in my sim. AMAZING! I am sure you would appreciate it if you have not tried it yet :)
I'm sure he'll pick it up! Lol
OMG THIS IS EPIC SIM, Great job, and this was a serious fantasy of mine, I’ve already made room for it, I will be waiting for this like a kid waiting for Christmas!!!!!!!! Yep
Would love it. How do i enter the giveaway?
Even though i am more of a combat sim pilot i would still love to have this sim.
Oh well, going to try.
NorthAmericanAviation - Totally...Check this link for the details! Stay Level 🤙 flightchops.com/contest/

I know this video is more geared towards flight simming, but wow that guitar collection! I am also a guitarist and flight simulator, I'm digging your collection man! Especially the Les Paul and the JS100!
Thanks. Actually only half the guitar wall is shown in this video.
Great video. Probably a decade before I touched the controls of an airplane I started having fun on early flight sims. You'd mentioned early on in the vid that you were aiming for a budget. Just curious what that budget was and how close the final product came to that target. Thanks.
This is my dream set up! Well done Steve!
Here's another vote for the A2A T-6! Thank you for posting.
You may already know this but it adds a lot of realism when you link ForeFlight with X-Plans.
So cool - guessing there'll be more and more sim builds now that the new Microsoft Flight Sim has been announced... It looks so good!
Z4's WOW! Still pumping out great sound all these years later! I have a pair too!
Mick Martin - haha, when he got those out, I said the exact same thing. I had a pair in college and they were so solid. Don’t tell me you also had Dell 2208WFP monitors also?
@@StayLevelAvionix Na never Dell but gun displays for the time that's for sure. Great set up by the way!
There’s some awesome xplane mods for scenery and even some photorealistic scenery mods to make the game look amazing like HD packs for airports runways and clouds and adding other planes into it that takeoff and land and taxi around
Yeah it's insane how realistic X-PLANE can look and feel! i just installed the zibo mod 737 with headshake and the realism is smoking hot physics are great as well unfortunately i can only play on saoo 2x and high settings with my gtx 1060 and achive 30 fps
Extremely informative....thanks for taking the time to tell the story of your build and also list all the components......best regards
This is going to be me in the future. I do want to be a dermatologist but aviation is a hobby that I love aswell
Finally a fellow guitar player who also loves planes
Yet another epic video, Steve! Looking forward to seeing/hearing you on PilotEdge! :-)
Awesome job. Just starting into the flight sim world. Definitely a dream setup! Thanks for making this!
Super sweet! Would run that sweet gear with three 65" 4K OLED panels, running x-plane with a server setup.
:)
I’m using your setup to build one. Thank you 🙏🏾
Neat setup - like you, the kind of thing I've wanted to build since I was a kid, which covers too much ground. Looking forward to seeing the video from your coverage of the first flight of the Plane Savers DC-3 restoration, June 6, 2019. Knowing your video work from other posts, I'm sure you'll have some excellent views to share. In the meantime, have fun with your really over-the-top new toy. Knowing that any project like this has to be done to some kind of a budget, it already looks amazing. And if you need to raise some cash to help finance it, I'm sure you;d have a lineup of av-nuts stretching around the block who'd happily drop some money in the pot for 30 minutes in the "cockpit," LOL>
Holy cow Steve, you really went all out! I’m waiting for the new Honeycomb yoke...much improved from what Saitek offers. I’ve been simming for decades and love it. I feel sad I missed expo, but with my ppl renewal I just couldn’t. RTX isn’t in my opinion a good choice...you’re paying for a lot of features that sims don’t use....an older 1080ti would have been plenty enough for you.
Hello, thank you for sharing, it's been my dream too to have such a rig! On another matter, you might want to check minute 2:55 aprox., I think the dog's QR tag is clear enough to be read, you might want to blur it, in case it leads to personal information.
Thanks for catching that - it occurred to me when I was editing - I checked into it and the tag is like the Headpiece to the Staff of Ra (See “Raiders of the lost Ark”)
You need the QR code as well as a number on the other side of the tag.
Regardless, it is linked to his vet clinic, not our personal info - but thanks again - it was a good catch to think about it.
Awesome set up! Could you list off the hardware used for the sim set up? (Not the PC internal components, but the flight components)
Chad Griffin - Sure...
Avionics Panel: Custom SLAVX Panel
Avionics - 6-Pack: iPad Pro 10.5” w/ RemoteFlight Cockpit HD
Avionics - Navigation: RealSimGear GNS 430
Yoke: Logitech Pro Flight
Throttles: Logitech Pro Flight
Radio Panel: Logitech Radio Panel
Switch Panel: Logitech Switch Panel
Integration Hub: AmazonBasics 7-Port USB 3.0
Amazing sim!! Would love to build one like this one day!
The only way to make this set better is a VR headset. That would be killer.
Steve, You S.O.B. You just cost me a crapload. I love it. :)
Is this the start of.... SimChops?
:)
Your simulator look great. I would like build one. Where can I get the information. I much it could cost to build it . thanks
Steve, does the builder in this VLOG build these systems to sell?
The panel builder does, yes - check the description for links. The PC was a one off from my friend Dave
Man!!! This would have been nice to have going through my instrument training! Not to mention commercial and CFI! Jealous!! Super jealous!
What is up with the sound mixing on UA-cam videos lately? Not just this one, I mean across the board. Not just flightchops videos, I’m talking every UA-cam video lately, blaring loud music and then you can’t hear what anyone is saying. Is it a problem with whatever software UA-cam itself uses?
I'd love one, it looks so awesome!!
Bravo-six, going dark.
Nice. For VFR and VR, get Aerofly FS2, that's the bees knees right now.
Flightsim 2020 is about to turn all of this on its head
We’re actually focusing on IFR stuff here - FS 2020 doesn’t yet support IFR that I know of
@@FlightChops
I don't know if this pertains to the same thing, but I found this in a development channel; New Flight Model/IFR-VFR Flight/Weather Simulation Depth/VR Support
I have a crappy latop that can run FSX that wont even start to run a game like PUBG. So i do have hope that a rtx 2080 with other nice hardware that wont cause a bottle neck WILL be able to run FX 2020 as moderate to good graphic settings while providing a decent screen frame rate. Of course we will have to wait and see but that means that a $1500 to $2000 computer will be able to run FS 2020 no problem.
Love the music in this vid. Can you tell me what they are? Thanks for all you do for the sim community..
Are you going to be CFFKO every time? Would be cool to see you online!
"We put money where it needed to go. A 2080ti" Most overkill for a sim. Need ram, cpu and cooling and could have got better flight sim products but I guess if you have the money do what you want
As someone who has built 20+ gaming desktops, and worked at a gaming PC company, that guy that built your computer REALLY knows his stuff, props to him!
Could you post the Bill Of Materials for this build. This is exactly what I fly and would love to build same unit.
Love your videos!!

Next year: FS2020 ! :)
So... I fly airplanes but I want a flight sim system that is quiet? Put on the Bose... :)
Dear God I hope to win it dude
That custom one way gave away after this episode is long gone, but I am currently giving away the exact one that we built here for this episode. check flightchops dot com and enter to win it
Awesome flight sim. I too have always wanted one. Does any companies sell components to build let's say a Seneca or T-Tail Turbo Arrow? And would it be possible for you to list the models of your components and if you don't mind approx. pricing? Love your videos - Tom H. from NW of Chicago based at 10C.
Sweet....
I want one!!!
Pretty cool!
How was the builder of the computer you show on video?
I would have spent the money on a great VR headset like a Index
And then it would've been really hard to manipulate the Garmin 430 which he's working hard to learn. :)
I just noticed, you really look like cpt price in the new modern warfare game
You should download the dc 3 on xplane.org. It is what you would get as a payware plane for free. I would love to see you fly it.
Plz tell me what you think about the yoke because some flight sim users say it has a unrealistic hard center. I would like to know from a pilots prospective so I know if I should upgrade.
agreed - the yoke does not feel real at all... but that is not what I got the sim for - only crazy level D sims that cost millions of dollars will feel real - like even $50,000 RedBird type sims have similar poor control feedback.
What simulator was he using? How or what software/setup is used for the 6 pack steam gauges?
Hugocraft - 10.5” iPad Pro w/ RemoteFlight Cockpit HD all integrated with a Custom SLAVX Panel and RealSimGear GNS430 Avionics.
Fantastic!
Can we get one like that, for an airbus A320 not cost?
dam seeing that setup makes me jelly
Have always wanted to build a rig like this. Been playing Flight Sims since the early nineties. Wanted to become a pilot but with 2 autistic sons can't afford these luxuries. Love to watch those who can though.
we just set up a simulator similar to that!!!
Wow, so, that 2080ti was probably close to 2k dollars 3 years ago. You can spend less than 500 bucks for the same performance now.
You should be able to power a VR setup now with a PC you built for under $1000
What about adding a little motion seat?
Next episode...Linus tech tips builds a mineral oil cooled flight sim for FlightChops
Ah this would be so amazing! I'm disabled and the dream of flying a real plane isn't possible for me. I'd be so grateful to win.
Michael Taylor - Absolutely, be sure to register at the contest link! flightchops.com/contest/
reality, this stranger.
Nice dog
I was a trainee flying military aircraft but was suspended from flying after just 27 hours due to air sickness. It was a dream i chased for so long and leaving it was painful. I have moved on from that...................................untill i saw this. I want it. NOW!!
Are you using X-Plane or MS Flight simulator, with the whole setup?
Did the avionics panel come with the glare shield and if not, where did you get it from?
yes - all the links should be in the description. If not, google stay level avionix
Yes, the Glareshield is included in the SLAVX panel.
What was the cost for a setup like this?
Very nice vid, I am going to build a pc with an rtx 2080 and I7 9700K, do you think that is good for x plane 11
Edit: is it nice to fly with the saitek pro flight
Into_The_Rik, Your video card and CPU choice are more than enough.
The Saitek Yoke (used in this video) is not a strong flight control system IMO. It has some sort of detent around the pitch input which makes it hard to make very small, fine inputs. It's one of those things which contributes to the myth that sims are hard to trim. I would buy a Honeycomb yoke or the Thrustmaster T-16000M joystick. Yes, even if you fly a plane that has a yoke, your brain will adapt very quickly. It's about having a high fidelity input device that allows you to command the pitch/roll inputs that you need. Even if you do have a yoke, the control forces are NOT going to be the same as the real airplane and certainly won't change with speed, so you're already departing from the real world as is. Best to get a device that gets the job done, not one that necessarily looks more or less like the real yoke.
Awesome vid. thank you.
Why would you write your clearances down on a pencil?
does foreflight crowd fund? start to mass produce their sim at a better price with better components bought in bulk.sky's the limit.
Trippy
GOD, why an Intel CPU when you have a graphics card?
I might have missed it, but how did you manage to get ForeFlight to follow the Sim flight?

Dam I’m want to be a pilot later on in life but I have to use keyboard and mouse on a laptop so lol
How much does it cost all tougher
No D Day DTD flight video?
It’s coming - that is a much harder edit and I was traveling none stop - I went straight from the DTD flight to Orlando and then Yakima. I sunc the 3 angles of flight footage for Mikey to edit into his episode of that counts? :)
@@FlightChops awesome. Not critical or meaning to sound rude. Just you have amazing cinematography and probably the best supportive mindset filming. So excited to see your take on the day.
Thanks for the reply.

Which rudders were you using
yayyy i love not being able to participate in a giveaway
Your sarcastic / negative tone really makes it hard to want to help you, but here goes anyway: I’m going to assume it is because you’re under 18? Which likely also means you live at home with a parent or guardian? If so, have them enter for you.
