I've moved this year to Newport News and I love it here! I'm seeing a lot of comments about how horrible it is and there is nothing to do. I think this is all relative to your life's experience. I live in an area that is quiet and safe with the cutest houses and easy access to amenities. There is plenty to do here plus lots more within an hours drive. I've lived in towns as small as 200 people, as large as NYC and everything in between. This video does a great job highlighting the many different feels and areas of NN. If you like living in the midwest, small and medium towns and cities, then this probably isn't the place for you to set up roots. And that's okay!
Thank you, thank you, thank you! I appreciate this - it definitely isn't a city for everyone, but there is a lot of variance in what is here for people to see and do. Love your balanced perspective!
THANK YOU! Appreciate this, totally agree with you. There are so many narratives about Newport News and some very negative. Hope people can be encouraged by watching this.
I really enjoyed NN when I lived there. Lived up in Hidenwood and worked in South NN. Loved the wildlife and insect noises, tree frogs on my windows, owls silently murdering the doves my neighbor fed... very fond memories
I plan to relocate to Newport News or Hampton in about four years. I served in the military at Norfolk Naval base, returned in 1999 to work in Newport News and I lived in Hampton for 2 years. I returned to Dallas, but I miss the area, beaches, and historical sites.
Awesome! Come on back! I've been to Dallas once and did enjoy it, but didn't stay long enough to get a good feel of the city. Glad you enjoyed it here and interested in coming back!
Best trendy, classy and family oriented people is the "Hidenwood" neighborhood. Near by Universities, restaurants, museums, and stores, however driving uphill you will be surrounded by nature, with pine trees, cripple blooming trees and flowers. Thanks awesome video!
Hidenwood is nice but in every direction other then the water on the west you are bordered by bad areas in every direction just outside your little neighborhood…. Where is this nice shopping right by Hidenwood lmao?? I used to play basketball at Sedgefield almost daily and know this area very well.
@@Robocline back in the late 70s it was awesome till the 80s when the denbigh section was awesome started integrating section 8 and public housing then the shit went all to hell starting off with aqueduct apartments and it just just got worse since then

Allow me to comment about the city where I grew up and have lived in for most of my life. I've worked, lived and was educated uptown, downtown and midtown. There are areas of crime from neighborhoods past Denbigh Blvd, down by Oysterpoint all the way to downtown which is equal to at least 4 of the other 7 cities. ( Va Beach, Norfolk, Portsmouth and Hampton. ) The problem with your pros and cons are .... as an agent ... you either really don't know this City or you've heard some stories. Examples of Great People, places and things not mentioned in the Southside PROS...- (King-Lincoln Park on the water I might add... quiet areas , fishing piers, Pearl Bailey, Ella Fitzgerald, Aaron Brooks, Boys and Girls Club, Doris Miller Community Center, Downing Gross, STEM and Achievable Dream Schools where many upper Newport News kids attend., Brooks Crossing Community Center., Chesapeake Avenue area, Christopher Shores where the Senator resides, Great Churches, so on and so on.... Good areas and some not so good areas are everywhere you go. One thing I can say is there are some awesome people in this city. Need more information, contact someone who knows.
I’m moving to the area next year and trying to decide between Williamsburg or Newport News. I like old houses and the homes in NN are very cute, and a little less expensive than Williamsburg. I’m worried about crime though and have been consulting the crime map when I browse homes online. I’m coming from Seattle and wonder how the crime rate compares. The entire area seems to have a ton of things to do and it looks like a freakin’ adult playground to me! Colonial Williamsburg, Jamestown Settlement, beaches, theme park, history and art museums, lots of restaurants, huge outlet mall, beautiful parks and nature trails, easy access to two airports, summer concerts and festivals, farmers markets, upick farms, and there’s even an IKEA and Trader Joe’s! I’m so excited to move and I know I’m going to love it! 🥰
Live in southside one block from the blue area on 3 sides - daytime crime is average(porch theft 2 times) but few roam at night(car glass break once) & home break in once - maybe because of homeless shelter next block - Currently have security cameras on sides of house which didn't affect porch thieves or car glass breaker = Near shipyard which is quiet between 8am & 230pm
there's more pros and cons in Newport News, the list is long and he focuses on the housing. Also didn't mention Ella Fitzgerald, Missy Elliot, Gabby Douglas.
How about work and live in Newport News. Been here in and off for 28 years. Not so bad. Go to the Southside every weekend or so to see friends. Love it!!
From 1989 to 1994, I lived in the Denbigh section of Newport News....It was nice, clean, and had a lot of shops and restaurants. ...At this moment, I am here in a Hilton Hotel Near the Patrick Henry Airport, and a lot has changed...a lot more businesses and resturants, but the vibe isn't what it was...it seems more sterile...

Could anyone say why the word 'news' is in the name of the city? Don't really think the "Newport" part's all that weird as we have one here in Oregon just called "Newport"
supposedly the 'News' comes from when Christopher Newport reached land being the Pilgrimage of America started in Virginia, news reached back to England that Christopher had discovered land and started a city. So the creation and growth of his city was reaching back to England as kind of like an adventure, giving the time period.

Oh, Sam, Sam, Sam. I know there's stuff you can't, or shouldn't, say. I've lived on the Peninsula my entire life and if I had money, even a lot of money, I would NOT choose to live in Newport News. Like you said about Portsmouth, Newport News is a city where desirable areas and more difficult ones are separated by mere blocks. Crime maps show the concentration of crime but not the crime "sprawl." And if you live in one of the most elite areas (north of CNU on Warwick Blvd, turn left, go to the river) when you leave your neighborhood, you are faced with some of the most mind-numbing suburban sprawl you can imagine. (Hampton, where I live, is no better, btw) While not VB caliber, traffic going anywhere midtown is just awful. You did mention some wonderful oases - Mariner's Museum, and the park surrounding it, are spectacular. The Virginia Living Museum is great. And then there's .... nope, that's it. ;) OK, Newport News Park is good. City Center is OK for a couple of the restaurants, a nice movie theater, and lovely fountain. City Center is not a shopping destination. Period. On the other hand - MIDTOWN EATS!!!! I haven't been in a couple years, which is crazy, since it's one of my all time favorite eateries. Diner style setting with food prepared by a true chef. I would have recommended it to you if I had remembered it. Your comments about traveling by the bridge-tunnels - sometimes a breeze, sometimes turn off your car, it's going to be a while. But on the average they are a bloody nightmare. If you have an appointment on the other side of the water that you must be on time for, you leave an extra hour of travel time, just in case. And "just in case" means pretty frequently. I know I don't normally sound so negative, maybe it's a bad day. Maybe familiarity has bred contempt. I hope not. But some home buyer seeing this just "asked a neighbor." Btw, the locals don't say the second "w" in Warwick. We sat war'ick, or, lazily, even wark. LOL (sorry for the lengthy post)
Appreciate the detailed feedback! Yeah, people seem to have the most contrasting opinions about Newport News more than any other Hampton Roads city. Still plenty of suburbs, too. I'm glad you mentioned the pronunciation! The people I know in Newport News pronounce the extra w, so I'll make sure to set the record straight! I didn't know that.
hey folks he did give it a fiar review..i grew up here..it has its good side and bad side...and yes our one local boy done good went on to play in the nfl and stupidly gets busted for dog fighting..he said it was every where here...im 50 years old and never once have i heard of a dog fight, and yes rappers gave the nick name BAD NEWS VA but i wear that with badge of honor...yes you can come live here and grow a family the schools are good, keep in mind our mayor is a law and order man so dont be screwing around
The dog fighting Vick did wasn’t even in Newport News. Plenty more have made it to the NFL… Aaron Brooks? The schools are far from good, that was a ridiculous claim man.
@@XoxoMoot I'll give you the got caught and famous but far as black culture I'm sure it is or might be, all I'm saying is I'm from here, Newport news I know black guys here and yes even in the hood parts of Newport news, I never heard of them talking dog fights here, now when he got to Atlanta and rich yea his boys on team might introduced him into it, but not much dog fighting going on here I know of
Hey Sam, we will be moving soon there but more likely to VB could you tell us some about how dog friendly this area is and the differences for on and off season. And is there a best time for renting or is the tent pretty stable. Thank you. We love your videos.
Hey hey! So glad you enjoy my videos! And happy they're helping you so far. There are plenty of dog-friendly areas, especially in Virginia Beach itself, as there are over 200 publicly-funded parks in the city. There are several that are larger than most and most of those have great areas for dogs. Is that the kind of thing you're referring to? As far as the off-season/in-season, the primary differences would be most felt at the oceanfront itself. Otherwise, it might not feel much different regardless of time frame because the rest of the city is still filled primarily with year-round residents. But the oceanfront is super quiet in the late Fall/Winter.
Hey Kevin! Welcome to the area preliminarily! Trulia.com is the best place that’s also interactive that I’ve found. It gives good guidance, doesn’t get into a lot of specifics but gives a general overview that gets you started. Type in any address and once the address populates one of the options in the listing is to click the crime map. If you need any help please let me know, my contact info is in the description!
I am a naturalized Cuban and I am thinking of buying a house in Newport News or Charlottesville. In this area I have nearby beaches, good parks, I just don't like military bases. In case of an international war this area can be bombed.
Newport News is not a good place to raise a family. The crime most of the way down Jefferson is bad. Pockets of Warwick Blvd are bad also. There are so many areas of this city where you should watch your back. It is progressively getting worse as well. There are a couple nice parks, the very northern part of Newport News still has some decent areas. Hampton is getting worse much more rapidly but no one wanting a quiet life should move to these two cities period.
I used to live there. Ghetto is the word your looking for. Even the NFL and NBA stars from Newport News you mentioned are criminals. 🤣😂😂 He's trying his hardest not to say you'll get shot or robbed.🤣😂😂
Hey. Thanks for the info. It was very informative. I've been looking at places out that way. I'm supposed to move out there in a couple of months. I'm looking at going to the north side, or the "everything else" section. Lol Something about your video that was very jarring was the two times where the video would be showing street views and there would be a random frame or two of your face. Just a real quick face shot and back to the street view video. Almost like you were trying to scare me. Lol
I grew up in NN and now live in Colorado. You glossed over the Denbigh/Ft Eustis area and its' decline. Back in the 80s and 90s NN decided to move a lot of the section 8 and low income housing to Denbigh (Specifically Courthouse Green area). The Warwick Blvd Corridor from Oyster point rd to James City county has SIGNIFICANTLY declined in those years. What most natives would call "Midtown" (Hidienwood, Shore Park, Hilton, City Center) are the "Nicer" areas. But, Despite having one of the thriving malls and some decent retail surrounding it, it's kind of turned into a ghosttown outside those areas. One need only look at the lack of national chains and the abundance of Payday Loan, Check Cashing and Car Title Loan spots to see. The closed businesses that used to only plague downtown have gotten MUCH worse city wide. Vacant stores and restaurants reveal the truth of the median incomes in the area. Stoneybrook, Beechmont and areas west of Denbigh Blvd have become run down and crime/low income neighborhoods. You did show any of this.
@@mikerivera7509 I am 3rd or 4 generations of my family who live there. I got out, but I go back and see how sad it is. How run down it has become. I live in a place where new construction and new businesses are opening all the time. That is not Newport News/Hampton.
Actually you don't for going across the tunnel from Newport News to Suffolk or Newport News/Hampton to Norfolk. The one you have to pay is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which connects from Norfolk/VB up to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
The traffic can be ragged and a real pain but some of the folks who are from places like California laugh at us because this is nothing for them same with folk from DC
Looking into apartments in the area. Really want to be close to people in their late 20s and 30s. I'll be working by CNU and am looking at Palmer area. Also are there possibilities in northern norfolk within a 30 minute drive of CNU or is the traffic by the tunnels too varied?

I’m out the cir right now lol and just shot a video out the G’s
I need help and info about moving to Virginia!
Hey Sam how is the Huntington Heights area ?
Exactly what I am going through the comments trying to find out. Looks like nice houses for sale in that neighborhood.
hey folks he did give it a fiar review..i grew up here..it has its good side and bad side...and yes our one local boy done good went on to play in the nfl and stupidly gets busted for dog fighting..he said it was every where here...im 50 years old and never once have i heard of a dog fight, and yes rappers gave the nick name BAD NEWS VA but i wear that with badge of honor...yes you can come live here and grow a family the schools are good, keep in mind our mayor is a law and order man so dont be screwing around
Appreciate your feedback! It's hard to find balance with so many opinions about the city!
The dog fighting Vick did wasn’t even in Newport News. Plenty more have made it to the NFL… Aaron Brooks? The schools are far from good, that was a ridiculous claim man.
@@757-David still c'mon man, of all the things he could a done, coke, hookers strippers he chooses dog fighting
My dawg Maddy Paddy from out there
Thank you im looking to move there in a month.Great video and very informative also what map was that for crime rate ? Thanks again!!
If you need any help please let me know, my contact info is in the description!
kevin it s a shithole isnt it?
I am a naturalized Cuban and I am thinking of buying a house in Newport News or Charlottesville. In this area I have nearby beaches, good parks, I just don't like military bases. In case of an international war this area can be bombed.
“We’re starting right now!” ...Starts 5 min later.
LOL!!
Exactly..
Unfortunately you are right. But I have to say this, Norfolk VA is getting just as bad as it is in the east end
thanks for the info. this is a great video!
What site are you getting your crime maps from?
Normally it's Trulia! They have color coded maps that are helpful to show people visuals.
@@samsansalone awesome, thank you
Is Wickham Avenue in a good part of town? I want to buy a property there
Lmao 🤣
Lol. Yeah go ahead and save that investment money
Lol
Something about your video that was very jarring was the two times where the video would be showing street views and there would be a random frame or two of your face. Just a real quick face shot and back to the street view video. Almost like you were trying to scare me. Lol
Its a dump.
There is an incredible amount of truth in your post.
@@mikerivera7509 I am 3rd or 4 generations of my family who live there. I got out, but I go back and see how sad it is. How run down it has become. I live in a place where new construction and new businesses are opening all the time. That is not Newport News/Hampton.
Lived in the news majority of my life.
Don’t let this fool lie to you
Please save your sanity and never move here ever 😭 im moving out of this hell hole soon i suggest you do the same.
Like Newport new
Me too!
Dnt forget you have to pay ez pass for crossing the tunnel
Actually you don't for going across the tunnel from Newport News to Suffolk or Newport News/Hampton to Norfolk. The one you have to pay is the Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel, which connects from Norfolk/VB up to the Eastern Shore of Virginia.
The traffic can be ragged and a real pain but some of the folks who are from places like California laugh at us because this is nothing for them same with folk from DC
Virginia is just old, i.e., The Old Dominion.
Ha!
Looking into apartments in the area. Really want to be close to people in their late 20s and 30s.
I'll be working by CNU and am looking at Palmer area.
Also are there possibilities in northern norfolk within a 30 minute drive of CNU or is the traffic by the tunnels too varied?
Kiln Creek area.
Damn..
@13:00 some people will say "that's really cool I love Newport News... others will say "ummmph" 😂🤣😂🤣😂🤣😂
Hahaahaha, I feel like someone has had to have responded like that at some point 😂
@@samsansalone I know I sure did! 😂

I live in the southern area of NN, it's soul crushing lol. Me and my coworkers refer to it as Satan's Asscrack, there's nothing to do there, very lonely, very crummy, very crimey. Makes me wish to die some days haha
The homeless shamble the street, no pretty women, it's only worth living in for shipyard work. That's the only pro.
I was going to mover there for the shipyard
I was in Newport news working at the docks doing corrosion control and painting Navy boats and let me tell you coming from Jacksonville Florida to Newport news for work one of the worst mistakes I've ever made the place is a cesspit every corner had bombs and prostitutes we went to five different hotels used condoms on the floors holes in the walls cockroaches on the counters worst experience of my life I'll never go back

I would not brag about Michael Vick.
