Kevin's comments about learning around 1:35:00 are so spot on. Thank you for articulating this. This is definitely what holds most adults back from improving their skills. I love this quote: "The bottom line is you're only in a race with yourself. And as long as you are constantly improving on what you did last time, even small increments, you're in a good place."
Totally! You don’t need a degree to make a living as an artist - you need skills to produce consistent work that impresses upon people. This is why we focus our training program on giving our students the skills, and we measure our own success based on our student results ~ Daniel
Yes. On his palette, he used the 4 mixtures on the right to paint his shadows. Though take note that the brightest of them is a color and value that he could also use for his darkest light (you'll see him use that value again in the next live stream of this series). He used this value only in the areas where the light and shadow meet. Hope that helps! ~ Daniel
Hey Mary 🙂 yes. For our transfers, we print a black and white photo of the reference at the size we want. Then we place a sheet of carbon paper on the canvas, tape it down, and then tape down the black and white reference on top. Then you make marks where you see value shifts. Then you would remove the photo and carbon paper, with the transfer sketch underneath. For this portrait, Kevin took it one step further and lightly shaded all his shadows so that he could more easily see the structure of the head. Let me know if you have any other questions 😊 ~ Daniel
Was there a video on how to transfer the pattern image? I’m a new student in block 1 (not under this account name) In block one but and dying to know how the ghost image was applied. I like the soft background music. I need some level of white or grey (haha) background noise to work.
Hey Bal, we have not posted a video on how to transfer the image, but it's possible we will in the near future. In Block 3 you'll start transferring images from black and white photographs, which is basically the same as what Kevin did here, except that Kevin also gently shaded his shadows and then did a thin acrylic pass on top of the drawing to give it that "ghostly" appearance. That way, he can see the drawing underneath but when he paints, the marks go away 😊~ Daniel
I asked at a local art store if they had Old Holland Paints. They said "No, they have 'X' as their premium paint, which is probably even better., as it's what I use". As the company was founded in 1984, I simply smiled to myself and wandered away... pretty sure a company still active over 350 years old knows more about oil paints.
Hi to you love your work do you draw using a ballpoint pen I been playing with ballpoint pen free hand and I love drawing with a ballpoint pen so so so fun when drawing with colorua pencils I call silver color pencils my magic color pencils all colors are my favorite colors I love colors I came across your video on UA-cam I'm happy I find your video so cool thanks for the videos
Hey Dallas, glad to have you 😊Kevin draws with anything! He talks all about drawing in this video, I think you'll appreciate it 🙂 ua-cam.com/video/46NaJE_F4_E/v-deo.html
Great slow motion paint by number approach to painting. Painting from photographs like a snail across a predetermined path is so tedious. Cooking and arithmetic is not painting. The musing never seems to crack the surface of superficial analogies. How does "it" work, lots of non specific remarks that wander around like a lost amoeba.
🤔🤔🤔 hmm, I hear you Rick. One of the main points to having Kevin make this portrait is to show people how simple and attainable painting can be with the right process. Yes, it might appear to be tedious, but you can apply the same process at a faster pace and get a looser, perhaps more expressive result. But ultimately Rick, if you’re looking for an education in painting, you won’t find it in our live streams. We offer a complete education through our website where we walk our students from complete beginners to pro level painting skills. Wow! You philosophize soooo much. How about calling out the value number instead of just say darker lighter? Having a value scale would also help these beginners who are watching you be sporatic, each painting us so different, another artist demonstrator thinking they are teaching. In my experience painters-artists don’t have an educational therory class on their resume. I’m a retired master special education teacher, took up painting after a few years in retirement. As I started listening to you, i became disappointed, sorry. Critiques for growth, teaching is an art too, you know. I’ve taken many critiques on my paintings…. ‘ if not in the painting…hummm you have too many hard edges on boarders between lite and shaddow. Take a look. Make sure these things are soft ? Really…?

As an Evolve student this video is a huge disappointment. I'd been looking forward to learning from Kevin like we do in the block tutorials but it seems he feels he needs to entertain us with music instead of teaching us with his content. It makes him sound like he doesn't feel his content is enough to keep us interested. so he's lowered himself to the same level as every other painter making videos on youtube. That's too bad since it was his content that made him outstanding. Now the concern is that he's added music to the block tutorials.
Hey thanks for your honest feedback! It was my (Daniel Folta's) decision to add the music. After the live stream I talked it over with Kevin and we agreed to have no music for future live streams. Lesson learned - I'll focus my attention on leveling up our live streams in other, more awesome ways! 😁~ Daniel

Can you discuss the process of transferring the image. What do you use to transfer the image?

Awesome video:)
did he use straight up paint no oil to prep the board background before he started painting the shadows?
Hey Rhyannon, he used oil paint thinned down with linseed oil, similar to the first pass in Block 6 of our program 😊~ Daniel
Always build thicker paint on top of thin paint. I learned this the hard way... (Your painting can "crack" if reversed.)

is the majority of the shadows on the face painted with those 4 values
