He was a good boxer, GREAT fighter, and had a huge heart both in & out of the ring. His was a Cinderella story. The underdog becoming the favorite. He was mixed up, but he was REAL. I was at The Pit watching this fight with my Dad. RIP Pops. The Pit is one of the loudest places on earth. The energy that night was wild and it’s like a real life Rocky movie. He is my favorite fighter of all time. I'm 50 now and pop is 72 and we'd get excited to see Tapia. I've still never seen such a quick puncher. Oscar would be second on that list.
Johnny was a special fighter and person. They don't make them like that anymore. Me and my pops used to have big get togethers at his house every time Tapia fought. I was in the crowd at the Tapia/ Martinez title fight, which was held in Albuquerque. It was UNBELIEVABLE. Al Bernstein said that this was the BEST crowd he'd ever seen. New Mexico loved him. I remember screaming throughout the fight. I also remember towards the end of the fight when Tapia hurt Martinez. The crowd went ballistic, and you could see the deep emotions on Tapia's face, which made us scream even more. He knew he was loved.

My friend Johnny was never really understood but me and him knew living in Wells Park was very hard for our families I loved basketball so did he we played as much as we could as Wells Park community center, everyone played there hung out there it kept us outta trouble but he found boxing or boxing found him and I moved to Los Lunas with my girlfriend and married her. Still married to this day. I miss you Johnny ! You ARE Albuquerque’s champion! We will meet again.
Johnny Tapia was the people’s champ. You rooted for him. Not because you thought he was perfect. Quite the opposite. You saw a lot of yourself and what you could’ve been if you made those same mistakes, and went through those same tragedies, as Johnny. He was New Mexico’s Rocky. I read that towards the end of his life he gave his life to Jesus Christ. That’s the greatest decision he ever could’ve made with everything that happened to him. May he rest in eternal peace. God bless all of his remaining loved ones and fans!

Rich. Thanks. Long overdue. I saw Tapia in Vegas training at the hotel we were staying at for an upcoming fight 1990 when he wasn't so well known. I thought even then that he would be a world champ. Very intense guy. Also got to meet Engels Pedroza who was visiting Tapia's camp.
It breaks my heart that he never had a chance to enjoy life after he beat his demons. If anyone deserved a long happy life it's Johnny Tapia. This dude could have helped so many people but I just think it's unfair he died so young

What a very comprehensive and moving documentary of the great Johnny Tapia. My heart broke for the man, as he suffered greatly. As a fighter, my goodness, he was so talented - a classic boxer/puncher with superb defensive skills. Watching this, I couldn't help but imagine how Tapia would fare against Inoya Inoue at say, 115lbs. Imagine that for a moment!
I was a bigger fan of Romero at the time of their fight, but Tapia won me over. He had a short, difficult life but an amazing career. Thanks Rich, this was awesome.
This doc is amazing. Johnny tapia was a special fighter. His life outside of boxing was tragic. Especially for the woman that stood by his side. It’s crazy how much chaos is around boxing, especially in the previous eras of the sport.

I would see Johnny at the community center as a kid, I had to have been 8 or 9. He was always cool, down to earth, humble, grounded. Last time I saw him, was a year or two before he passed. I hadn't seen him since those days spent at the center. Johnny spoke to me like he had known me for years. "What's up, Carnal?" Johnny was always cool, down to earth, humble, grounded. Truly a great person. R.I.P. Johnny.
Very meaningful piece Rich. When he was coming up, he was the best American prospect at that weight I have ever seen. And it was so heartbreaking when he literally could not stop doing cocaine, failing drug tests he knew were coming because he just couldn't lay off for a few days. And while he accomplished plenty, I always wonder what could have been. And that's not to judge him or hold anything he did against him with the horrors he had endured. A lot of us here did blow and didn't even have a fraction of that on our plates.

Didn't like Tapia when i was younger. Thought he was a showboat. And he is. But looking back with more "seasoned" eyes... His footwork was awkward and he could go to the body. Tough as a piece of shoe leather. He would be a problem in any era.
Great classic bantamweight fights between Ayala and tapia but tapi deserved the nod in both fights that being said Pauli’s Ayala is extremely underrated and under appreciated and boxing fans need to be aware of him and his accomplishments Pauli’s Ayala vs Orlando cannizales would have been special❤

He loved his mother and missed her everyday of his life!! Nothing like a mother's love which was taken away from him so young nobody could help him except him self but he choose not too ! He had a kind heart inside but very few people seen it I don't think even his wife knew. He died tragically but now he's with his mother and he's happy in heaven rest in peace johnny you deserve it
I'm glad he had accepted Christ as his personal Savior. Maybe he didn't realized it but accepting Christ was the biggest achievement in his life and now he is reaping the rewards. He is now with God and his mom. Now it's up to us to follow his steps in gaining eternal life. Read John 3:5.

Tapia was one of my favorite fighters. I first watched him fight on Friday Night Fights. His personal story just made me admire him more. Awesome content!

My coach Sammy Stewart fought him they were both 26. My coach lost that fight and said he was one tough fighter. One hell of a fighter

He loved his mother and missed her everyday of his life!! Nothing like a mother's love which was taken away from him so young nobody could help him except him self but he choose not too ! He had a kind heart inside but very few people seen it I don't think even his wife knew. He died tragically but now he's with his mother and he's happy in heaven rest in peace johnny you deserve it

I'm glad he had accepted Christ as his personal Savior. Maybe he didn't realized it but accepting Christ was the biggest achievement in his life and now he is reaping the rewards. He is now with God and his mom. Now it's up to us to follow his steps in gaining eternal life. Read John 3:5.

I thought that was Futch! I'm surprised that Rich didn't mention Eddie, a Legend! And Rich knows it. I think Rich actually did a piece on Eddie Futch.
Ah, Futch was only there for three weeks and seconded with Jesse Reid as you saw. I don't think he worked with Tapia beyond the Romero fight but I could be mistaken.
I really wished he knew what a hero he was to so many and I hope he's able to rest in heaven and have the glory he deserves

Tapia was one of my favorite fighters. I first watched him fight on Friday Night Fights. His personal story just made me admire him more. Awesome content!

@@MosesCampos-pr6ef It depends on the story length/career of the fighter. It can take anywhere from 2 days to 2 weeks for the bigger stories.

It’s heartbreaking the pain he suffered from the age of 1 until his final days. He over came trials tribulations and demons to have a great career and what an accomplished fighter.
